Closet grocery store in town I believe.When walking in it reminds me of a Winn Dixie from down south. I believe they are in the same line. As the tags throughout the store resembles Winn Dixie. I just finished at the self checkout and went over to my partner at the claw machine to ask for help carrying my groceries out and as im walking away, the lady sitting down in the self checkout area turned over to her friend and stated to her, very loudly, "absolutely braindead" in reference to me leaving my items at my register. She made me feel harassed and degraded. I hope i dont have to see her again. read more

It was So stressful visit supermarket this morning ! I was going to buy two gift cards Amazon, but lady cashier asked me so many strange questions about calls and asked me phone numbers of people who will receive my cards. I try to explain her that sometimes I buy cards for myself or give them to friends. I have my rights to buy cards. She said she is going not sell me cards! I was going to use another cashier, but that woman followed me and loudly insulted me by saying that she is not going to sell gift cards for me. It was in presence of many people around and I felt very upset about that. I looked suspicious and guilty in something! She said she is going to save me from scam. It is ridiculous! I don't need her saving me without my permission. I don't have a scam, I feel hurt by cashier's actions. I will never come back to this supermarket. Crazy stuff there! read more

First, I want to say that the staff at this Shaws is LOVELY, HELPFUL and customer focused. My 2 Star review has nothing to do with the people who work here, it is really in regard to the store itself. The produce is often on the verge of going bad, the meat and seafood selections don't look great, the store is confusingly organized, there never seem to be that many customers when i'm there, and, their prices are not great in comparison to the other grocery chain in town, Hannaford. I have honestly wondered for YEARS, how many of the Shaws in this area stay open, and I think the answer up until now, has been a lack of competition. With a brand new Market Basket being built nearby, scheduled to open in the next few months, that may change... I don't say this to mark doom for Shaws, I say it with an urging to Shaws management to pick up their game. I have been to Shaws in other towns and other states that are FAR nicer than the one's around the greater Portland area. read more

We just moved to the area and this was the closest grocery store to our place. They have a very limited selection of products. We discovered today that the prices are 10-25% more expensive for just about everything compared to Hannaford's. We may still come here for the occasional missing ingredient but we won't be doing our grocery shopping here anymore. read more

This Shaw's is definitely a neighborhood supermarket. The employees are seasoned and have been with the company for decades, and it shows. The staff are always friendly and recognize you if you're a regular shopper. I'd rather shop here since it has a welcoming feel. read more

I'm not entirely sure how this Shaw's stays open. Every time I've come, there has been less than five other customers in the store (and usually, it's just me... what can I say? Their homestyle potato salad for $6.99 is my own personal crack even though it's nutritionally a disaster. I'm not proud of the fact that it makes my swoon the way it does, but I'm not going to deny my weird obsession, either). Both the produce and employees always look sad, the space itself induces claustrophobia, and I have seen multiple fights here (one of which I was part of... some older gentleman on a motorcycle called me every hate-filled curse word he could think of as we walked into the store near each other after I honked at him because he refused to drive through a green light [according to him he was having a conversation with the car next to him, and if I was a nice person I would have let them finish their conversation, green light be damned]; one of which I witnessed... two middle-aged women in line at the cash register were having a verbal cat fight, the likes of which I haven't personally seen since middle school. So basically, the lesson here, kids, is that adults are just about as immature as you think they are). I agree with another reviewers sentiments - I'm not sure who would make this store their primary grocer when there are better (price, morale, space, customer, variety, -wise) options just a couple miles away. I warmly refer to this Shaw's as "Sketchy Shaws". They have the most amazing cakes-I will say that for sure. They use real frosting not the best cream stuff (they have it though if you ask). Reasonably priced & I have ordered them a lot for corporate events. The store just seems unorganized and always awkward to get in & out of. They didn't have "Not your father's Rootbeer" the other night but no one seems to have it (running out fast) The staff seem nice but aren't super efficient and want to help you--huge line for "12 items or less" and no one in another lane. The staff could see there was a huge line but didn't say "hey we can help" like Trader Joe's & Hannaford employees. Again get the cakes!! They're amazing & so reasonably priced. read more

Items not in stock. That is pretty much the norm here. Sale items. Non sale items. It's not Covid based on other stores, it's incompetence. Anne, a worker here, seems to snap at others about distancing and the rules, but doesn't follow them herself. She would not stay two cart lengths behind me in line. I was afraid to move, she would smack me with her cart that is how close she was. She also went up the wrong aisle instead of down it. Not a good location. Wish it were. Having been to this Shaw's numerous times, I always find myself having to go to other grocery stores to actually find what I need. This Shaw's is often missing items and can sometimes not keep up with the demand of some items. On my recent visit, I needed shredded cheddar cheese, however, the store didn't have any shredded cheddar cheese anywhere. This has happened on other occasions when I have needed other things as well. Overall, the store does a good job keeping their items organized, I just find their selections very limited. Their bread selections are very, very small and their frozen selections are also small. If you come to this store looking for the basic boxed goods, then this is your place. If you are looking for other things, definitely check out other grocery stores in the area. read more

Last week, in passing, my mom said to me that she thought Shaw's as a whole was likely on their way out. It seemed weird to me at the time as it's been around my whole adult life with Hannaford, but then a couple of recent experiences make me wonder the same. To be clear, I haven't heard anything factual saying this, it just seems like some stores are cutting costs or on the verge of closing. This review is for two locations, both the one in Westbrook near Kon/Denny's and the Libbytown one on outer Congress. I got out of work later than I usually do and stopped at the Westbrook Shaw's around 7:30 or so on a Monday. I only made it as far as the produce section before realizing this wasn't going to do for what I needed. The whole produce section was wiped out like people were prepping for a hurricane. The produce that was there was mostly pretty gross. I try to mostly eat salads at work and I couldn't even find a head of decent lettuce. Rather than go to two stores in one night, I decided to cut my losses and try the next closest store, the one on outer Congress. Their produce was a little better looking, so I'm going about my shopping, next stop deli counter. Except that now at 8:15, they have shut that down, I guess at 8:00pm?? It wasn't for a lack of staff as there were about 4-5 employees breaking it all down faster than a Nascar pit-crew. I was directed to the slim pre-sliced section which didn't have much to offer. I was hoping to have something to put on the salad the following day, so I ended up buying my own turkey tenderloin out of the meat section and cooking it at 9:30 at night for the following day. This store has such a bad reputation (see other reviews), I'm guessing they close this down for lack of business, but to have a deli counter not open past 8pm seems crazy to me. Either way, be warned. Needless to say, I'll just be going to the Back Bay or the Westbrook Hannaford from now on where I know they'll have a decent selection and not have the deli shuttered at 8:00. read more

I love this store. It is not like the others and I'm down with that. There are enough other huge, blindingly bright stores everyone else can spend hours in for a shopping experience. As for me, I can quickly go in to get my stuff and go home. I like that it is rarely crowded, the employees are friendly and it has a smaller footprint for when I'm in a rush. I live a rocks throw from this Shaws location but after hanging with my neighbors and seeing them drive 6 minutes to the competitor I asked why that was? They said find out for yourself and check this Shaws out. I quickly came to find out why this is. After going once I concluded that this is where the take the leftover displays and food selections that they didn't need or want at other locations and fill this one with them. Poor food selections/quality...That same thing applies for the employees; this is where they put you or transfer you if they want to punish you. The atmosphere is very poopy/mopy from the employees like their miserable. The second time I went all I could smell was sour chicken not like the yumm sweet and sour chicken like gross I need to get out of here chicken. Oh well, guess I'll make the trip a few minutes away. read more

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this Shaw's. On the one hand, I really like that I can go here at any time of day on any day of the week and not feel like I'm being trampled by the entirety of Portland. On the other hand, they are often missing items I need (I mean, why do they never have nectarines?!). The staff are always very friendly and helpful, the aisles are well organized and clear, and the lack of bodies in here make for a pretty enjoyable shopping experience. However, I find myself going here only if I need a few things. If I need to do a big shopping I tend to visit the Falmouth location or Hannaford/Trader Joe's/Whole Foods, because those stores tend to have more items to choose from. The produce at this location is also hit or miss. There have been times I've gotten some really nice, fresh fruit and veggies, but more often than not the avocados are a miss. I always get them when I'm here, hoping things will be different every time, but every time they turn out to be bad. I basically have to throw out 2/3 of the avocado because it's brown inside. Whole Foods' avocados, though more expensive, are always perfectly ripe and beautifully green in side. You get what you pay for I suppose. I don't understand how this location stays in business because they're always so dead! It's a nice break from the craziness of downtown, though, I will give it that. So overall, will I continue to come here? Yes, but only for a quick stop and not for my weekly shopping. read more

Not sure why I ever bother coming to Shaw's, moreso, this location. I bought some sliced pepperoni tonight in the deli, and the person who cut it left the plastic wrapper on while putting it through the slicer. Which I would have noticed before cooking with it. Shaws is your average supermarket. This location was pretty big, but it was hard to figure out what items were in each aisle. I think the lane markers were a little too small or something. In any case, this is a good place to stop by if you're a tourist, especially to pick up some water and snacks. However, I was disappointed that they didn't carry coconut water. read more

I've always wondered why anyone would choose Shaw's as their primary grocer. Even after they finally scrapped their antiquated card-only savings program a few months back, prices on nearly everything in the store are still significantly higher than most of the competition (everyone except Whole Foods, actually, though, unlike Shaw's, WF at least sells some stuff you can't easily find elsewhere). In fact, the only reason I ever go to Shaw's at all is for their great BOGO sales. I'll give them that. Also, their policy of doubling manufacturer coupons (up to 99¢) is great for those who love to clip. That said, I had a particularly frustrating experience during my last visit.. I had found a couple boxes of a beloved-but-discontinued brand of crackers on the shelf. Discovering they were past their "best by" date, I inquired whether I might buy them at a marked down price, only to be told by the manager that he had to confiscate the doubly-wrapped packages for "food safety" reasons. When I incredulously pointed out that they were merely crackers (which, at worst, might go stale) and that, had I not brought the fact that an expired product was still on their shelf, I could've purchased it anyway, he agreed but nonetheless refused to sell them to me. Had this been a package of meat or a dairy product, the manager's inflexibility would've been warranted - but crackers? I know good customer service, and this wasn't it. Following this encounter, I walked out without spending a cent and seriously considering finding a different location to scratch my BOGO itch - hopefully one where management interprets and adapts policy when warranted, rather than turning away business when it was unnecessary to do so. read more

OMG. An employee here tested positive for the covid-19. I did not know that until I returned from the store today and heard the news. The store did not have any signage, explanation, etc. about this. I hate this store anyway because it is dreary, the food is not fresh looking, the employees are not well trained, etc. but now I will NEVER go back. Ewwww. read more

Honestly, I like shaws. (I mean, what can I say, I work in one), but the staff at this shaws seem a bit distant. I used their bottle redemption center to return some bottles and cans. The plastic machine was closed, an employee told me it was down, I said ok. The glass machine didn't like big bottles, and the associate that was covering bottles seemed a bit annoyed about that. He told me two times not to put big glass bottles in it. I only did it once, and I did not know this until he told me. I understand this job can get a bit frustrating at times, but I do the same thing at my shaws location in millcreek, and I try to not put up a big stink about it and still try to be nice to people at the same time. Other than that, the other employees seem nice, one employee helped me find an item I was looking for and at least tried to make an effort, most of the other employees seemed to mostly keep to themselves, but they seemed busy, so I understand. read more

The sales are awesome, half a pound of provolone for $2. The customer service though seems to be lacking. Not a single employee stopped to ask me if I could find anything. One employee was preoccupied with having a conversation that didn't really seem work related. I'm sorry, but if you're on the clock, you're there to work for the company and nothing else. Help other people out. This place receives maybe two stars for the sales. The rest of the stars, or lack thereof, is because mostly customer service and everything for the most part was very hard to find. I couldn't even find any ramen. Yes, ramen!! Shaw's Westgate is terrible, it is referred to locally as Shitty Shaws. It is common to find moldy produce in their very limited 'fresh foods' section. The store needs remodelling and the staff are often rude (loudly talking to each other when serving you). Whenever possible I shop elsewhere. read more
