I stg that the company chooses locations with the absolute worst parking imaginable. Every TJ's, in every city. Same parking lot issues. But once that hassle is over, shopping is a blast. We drive down once every few months, from Gardiner. So it's nice to see the choices rotate on some things. It's always crowded in here, but Mainers are nicer than other TJ shoppers in other states, so it's tolerable. Love the artwork on the signs. Loveeeee the prices! So affordable. I was one of those people who petitioned for Trader Joe's to come to Portland, Maine. I had experienced Trader Joe's in California with my relatives, and whenever I was taking a friends to Logan Airport, I'd make sure to stop at the Trader Joe's on Rt. 1 in Saugus, so I am all in on TJ's. This Trader Joe's is fairly small, and I tend to get the same things each time (until they don't carry said item anymore). Wine selection and prices are great, and Layne is amazing at making recommendations. Frozen section has a variety of foods from around the world, Cheeses are still reasonably priced, though not too many varieties outside of standard offerings. Staff is always friendly. Now that shop next door in the same building is vacant, maybe they can expand and bring us more variety? read more

Despite previous visits here for some time I have not written a review. With the craziness of the world and more specifically prices of eggs due to multiple reasons it's been an item I have avoided. This was until I saw something on social media with a picture of the eggs including the prices for eggs at Trader Joe's. So, after having a great night out courtesy of a Yelp Elite event in Portland my wife and I figured we might as well swing by. This may have been the absolute first time we visited that we did not have to multiple loops around the parking lot til someone would leave for a spot. Honestly go later to avoid this, that's what we learned. But besides the eggs being our initial reason for visiting. Trader Joe's is reasonably priced for a lot of their items. Added on to that I find a good amount of options you won't find at the generic grocery chains, my wife and I like exploring their snacks section. Their Movie Theater Popcorn is some of the best store bought when comparing to that buttery goodness you find at theaters! The overall set up and atmosphere is easy to understand and inviting. Also what I think may be the biggest plus here is the staff. Our cashier greeted us with a smile and had a great conversation with him! Compared to another grocery store that in my experience every worker seems to be in pain and the coldest interactions. While it may not be my go-to every trip grocery store it's a great spot to stop in at every once in a while and grab some snacks! read more

I really like Trader Joe's, they get many things right or even better. Occasionally there are falls for me, like so many items that mysteriously contain wheat when there's really no reason to - kinda like Pringles, why wheat in a potato chip?! Anyway, stiff they do right.... I love their Mango Kefir, it's a whole milk kefir too. I just found a Vanilla Cardamom Cold Brew labelled on an end case ; at first I thought I wouldn't get to try it, it was bare, but a clerk was able to point me to more on the shelf in the coffee section, yay! It's ready to drink and I tried it at home, with whole cream and maple syrup... on very yummy. Certainly there's more, but I leave you with that for now. read more

I absolutely love this Trader Joe's and I am quite often there 2 to 3 times a week because I have hungry athletes in my house. I'm a little disappointed because I called to let them know that I was there last Thursday and picked up a giant container of strawberries on the island as I entered the store that happened to have molded strawberries in it. A woman picked up the phone. She was incredibly nice and apologetic, and said just take a picture of the label and I offered to take a picture of the strawberries as well. She was absolutely lovely and told me that it was store policy to replace them and that I shouldn't bring molded fruit into the store. I thanked her because I have Lyme disease and I didn't want to be in contact with it. Again, she reassured me that they try to go through and take out anything that has signs of aging. I told her no worries. We've never had an issue before (over eight years). Anyway, I went back to the store for a few items with my daughter on Sunday and took the pictures of the barcode and the strawberries to the front desk. I spoke with a gentleman named Chris. Chris asked me who I spoke with and I just didn't remember her name. He told me I should've remembered who I spoke with and that I was incorrect and so were they. I then asked him what his name was and told him I would remember it if I ran into a woman at the front desk. I did show him my phone record, showing I called the store on Friday, and told him he could have the barcode and the picture. He stood there telling me in front of customers that it was not store policy and he wanted to know who i spoke with. I was a little embarrassed and didn't know what to do. He finally said that I could walk up to the counter and exchange the items. I ran into people who work at the store as I was shopping who I see all the time and asked them. They said that it was indeed store policy to replace items that are molded or damaged. If you go in there, then I would just be very careful who's at the front desk. It was day and night between the two employees. I do not think Chris knows store policies or represents the Trader Joe's name very well. I think anyone who's standing at the front desk with a trademark island shirt, answering questions should do a better job of knowing the products and the policies. I was going to let it go, but I looked up store policy today online and it said the same thing. I took an extra step and called there. I'm just so disappointed because I absolutely love that store. read more

They carry some of the most delicious frozen entrees at great prices. They are also very easy to get it ready to eat. Most are easy and takes very little time. I have one less star because some of the products you find to love and go back to buy more and you find out they are back ordered or discontinued. Here I tested the soup dumpling and pad see ew. Soup dumplings was delicious in which I had microwave. What can be simpler. The filling of dumpling was delicious ; moist and flavorful. The pad seemed ew; rice noodle was delicious and chewy not soggy at all and the gai lan ( Chinese broccoli) was delicious. Both are winners for me. Some of my other favorites are the Japanese fried rice , battered calamari rjngs( back ordered) , chicken masala, mixed nuts with olives & herbs etc . I've been shopping at Trader Joe's since about 1995 when it basically only existed in California and Massachusetts. Some of our family lore is intertwined with the growth of TJ's: I was living in San Bernardino County, CA while my mom had moved from Cape Cod to outside of Worcester, Mass., while finishing up her first year of teaching at Framingham H.S. Between learning the ropes of wrangling high school students, commuting, lesson planning, and needing to seek out the guidance of the ACLU when the school district tried to violate students' and teachers' First Amendment rights by compelling everyone to stand up and recite the Pledge of Allegiance, she was overwhelmed. With all of these challenges and changes, my mom had absolutely no time to make herself her usual nutritious and delicious meals. My mom has always eaten very healthily: she cooks 95% of her meals at home, sits down to eat, has regular mealtimes, incorporates lots of veggies, never overeats if full, doesn't favor fried foods, and in general *takes care* of herself. So, when she was barely eating, let alone cooking, I casually suggested that she go to this cool grocery store called Trader Joe's. Yes, it might mean buying a few frozen meals, but these were desperate times. Yes, some things might be pre-papered, but again, desperate times. I am similar to my mom about how I like to eat, and can be a little picky, like her, but I had been pleasantly surprised by how many TJ's items appealed to me, and how they also turned out to be delicious. If it worked for me, hopefully it would help my mom too, right? Well, a week or so later, my mom happily reported that she had gone to Trader Joe's, found a bunch of things that looked good, and had been surviving on it ever since. I was so relieved! My mom had been a returning student and wasn't exactly a youngster--she needed to stay strong while adapting to her new life, and I had just helped her figure out a huge component of how she would be able to do just that. But it just so happened that at that point in time, I lived near one of the first TJ's, while one of the only other Trader Joe's in the whole entire country was located right in Framingham where my mom was teaching. It was a freak stroke of good luck which made it so she was able to regularly shop at Trader Joe's and find a bunch of things to eat which sustained her throughout those first years. A few years later she found a teaching job back on Cape Cod, but still regularly drove 2.5+ hours to shop off-Cape at the Trader Joe's in Framingham. Every time she shopped there, she went to the customer service desk and nicely inquired when, just WHEN, would they would open a store on the Cape?!? And a few years later, a Trader Joe's *did* open on the Cape! Her drive-time was cut by about 2/3s and our entire family are all still loyal, delighted, enthusiastic TJ's shoppers, wherever we find them. And there's so many other reasons why this is a great business to support, including: well-paid employees who always seem happy to help you; fresh and varied produce; affordable cheeses; wonderful, affordable flower bouquets; nutritious & delicious pre-made items; and interesting, authentic, yummy products that they source themselves in order to pass on lower costs to us shoppers. One gripe I have is that I really, really, really miss the (Tunisian?) organic EVOO that came in a metal can, similar to how olive oil is normally packaged in Portugal and Spain. It's common knowledge that oils in glass bottles more easily spoil and become rancid, while lightproof containers are far superior. I know EVOO is harder to get these days, due to drought and other climate change related issues, but surely TJ's could negotiate something, even if it's simply switching the current producer from glass bottles to metal cans. If organic EVOO in metal cans returned to TJ's, I'd be beyond thrilled. My other complaint is: WHEN will a Trader Joe's open in Bangor, Maine?!? I now live near Bangor and driving three hours to shop in Portland, ME is too far, though eerily reminiscent of my mom making the pilgrimage to Framingham for her TJ's fix. But we NEEEEEEED a Trader Joe's in Bangor, yesterday already!! Please!! Also, please reduce or eliminate your plastic packaging!! Switch to plant-based, biodegradable plastics!! Technology is improving and better plastic options are available every day. But all the beautiful flowers, all the salad mixes, many, many other veggies, and so many more yummy foodstuffs are tainted by being in single-use, un-recyclable plastic. You revolutionized grocery stores and food shopping once before, and you could do it again by leading the switch to plastic-free packaging. I believe in your company and in your capabilities!! This would be a five-star review if they didn't keep getting rid of all their best vegan products!!! The vegan bolognese sauce? Gone. Vegan frozen pizza? Gone. Vegan feta cheese? Gone... The only reason I come here anymore is for the oat milk chocolate, vegan barebells, and vegan tzatziki, so for the love of god don't get rid of those. I have a few favorite items that have me coming back...so much so that I am willing to put up with the crap fest parking area to get the goods. :) I will list my favorites, but please please do not buy all of the stock :) you think I am joking but it happens often. I list my favorite things...and then I can never find any in stock during my visits. The ridges potato chips - seems simple, but they are just simply good. Not overly salty, and they are sturdy enough to eat with dip. I love just eating them plain with a nice craft beer during football season. The frozen chicken fried rice...the BEST frozen fried rice we have ever had. The quality of the chicken in it is good and the flavor reminds me of the fried rice we used to have at FilAm parties. Love it!! The frozen orange chicken - we make ours in the air fryer and then toss it in the sauce. It is the BEST orange chicken we have ever had, that includes comparing it to restaurant's dishes. It is made with quality chicken and the coating is perfectly crisp and the sauce is an excellent balance of savory and sweet. The carrot cake...I know, it's in a little sheet pan, but it is decent! If you are craving it, this will do. The pecan pralines. They are simply and delicious, try not to eat the whole container :) There are many more things I buy, but I will spare you having to read through my grocery list. Impressed with this location is an understatement. I am very familiar with Trader Joe's. Coming from Florida, I've always had them around. Unfortunately I don't go to TJ's frequently because the ones down here tend to be small, often sell out of many items, and parking is a tremendous hassle. So, when I saw that there was a Trader Joe's in the Portland peninsula, I knew I had to check it out to see how it compared to the ones down south. The difference? Night and day. First of all, this Trader Joe's is HUGE. I was overwhelmed in the best possible way by how big the store was and the variety of items. I was in heaven! And let's not even talk about their wine section... I wanted to buy all the bottles. The parking lot is also quite big at this store, even more so when you consider its prime location within the city. They even had designated spots for EMS workers. At last, I want to comment on one of my favorite things about this Trader Joe's: the staff. We were always met by 'good mornings' and a friendly attitude from the kindest people. The famous indescribable Cheddar Cheese hubby just loves. My favorite is the Brie with mushrooms which go great with their Pita Bite Crackers with sea salt. Than a nice bottle of sparkling grapefruit alcoholic wine great a refreshing drink while sitting around on a Sunday with family. Than I always get the ginger mints at the register it is hard to eat just one so I end up eating the entire tin. Cat was so welcoming and gave an above expectations experience while checking out. I had had a very rough day and traveled from waterville with my best friend to get some of my fave items. Cat was very empathetic when I Let them know that I had moved after my mother suffered a stroke. While also being able to affirm my purchases and explain why they were great options (I love wines, and ports and the artwork on the bottle I bought was gorgeous) the store was also well stocked and all the employees were very helpful and mindful of the people around them and also noticeably very helpful and the managers were on the floor present, smiling, and helping out!! that store has a great team and for a steady sunday everything flowed smoothly from guest perspective I can't wait to go back thank you again Cat for a 10/10 experience. read more

Well, hot damn. This just might be the best TJ's I've ever been to - no, I'm serious. I've lived on both coasts and a handful of places in the middle - and this TJs is where.it.is.at. First off it's insanely easy to get to off of the highway - which is important. We live in Saco, work in Scarborough and drive into Portland to get our grubby little hands on all of the delicious snackables we've grown to love from TJs. The parking lot is even easy to get in and out of and as a pedestrian, you don't feel like you're in a new-age game of Frogger trying to get your Unexpected Cheddar. Once inside - HOLY CRAP, this place is huge! This is a relief! We just moved out here from Vegas, and each TJs location is about half the size of this one, which means you can't find all of the delectable snackage that you can in a full-sized TJs (don't worry, the Cookie Butter still runs aplenty in the Vegas stores). I really enjoy that this location has a better flow to it than most other locations I've visited. You don't have to create a mental-map for where you've been and where you haven't - cuz the store makes sense...thanks for that. The team at this location is topnotch, incredibly friendly, keen to help, always smiling and apparently stoked that you're there. I'm clearly fangirling at this point, but I simply cannot contain my excitement. It's well worth the 20 minute drive to obtain my sea salt cocoa almonds and cowboy bark. read more

Have you ever been to the ONLY TJ's in Maine on a Sunday? You probably shouldn't. Parking is crazy! I swear, you'd think a hurricane is coming from the way the parking is. I'm ALWAYS going to be a fan of TJ's... except the ones in Rhode Island because WHAT KIND OF TJ'S DOESN'T SELL WINE (but that's for another review). This TJ's is not as friendly as the ones in Texas, but hey, when you have the whole state of Maine coming to one location, it's a rodeo, & like us Texans say, "THIS AINT OUR FIRST RODEO"! What a find! A large Trader Joe's that is so much nicer than the one that we have back home. We load up for our visit in Portland so that we have a stocked hotel room for our visit. Note: I found the young man in the wine section very helpful. He knew the inventory and made very helpful suggestions for out-of-town visitors who appreciated the service. Trader Joe's is the ultimate grocery store when looking for snacks, beer/wine, frozen meals, etc. When walking into the store, Trader Joe's prides itself on it's cleanliness and organization. Everything has a place and can easily be found due to the spacious venue. My husband and I will go to Trader Joe's when we are looking for crafted cheeses, which are a highlight to any party we have been to. I highly suggest the cheese that is soaked in Syrah wine. It is AMAZING and it will literally bring you to the gates of heaven when you try it. Their pepper cheese and their frozen meals are also a highlight. My husband and I have tried their sweet potato gnocchi, their chimichurri rice, as well as their marinated curry chicken. All of these options have left us wanting more. Overall, Trader Joe's is a terrific establishment, and their staff is always friendly and attentive. I have never had a bad experience and their prices are reasonable for the food they provide. I drive an hour and ten minutes just to go to Trader Joe's. Does the gas expenditure offset the savings? Maybe. is it still worth it? Absolutely. Trader Joe's makes the best veggie broth and for that alone I will make the drive, but the fact that their bagged spinach somehow lasts in the fridge for a month without getting gross is right up there with reasons to make the drive. Everyone I've ever encountered at this location has been friendly, even when they're slammed busy, and I think every grocery chain should take a lesson from TJ's employees on how to pack a grocery bag. I'm really not a fan of Trader Joe's. We've never clicked, and the parking. The parking!!! However they had unsalted organic peanuts at a really great price, I discovered while looking online, and had my fiance drive me there because I. just. can't. with that parking lot. I wanted to stock up but all of the packages had an expiration date of only a week or so later than the day I bought them. Bummer! So I bought one package and figured I'd see if I even like them. They were rancid. I called TJ's and spoke with a fellow named Andy. I explained what happened and asked if they could credit my card if I gave them my receipt info over the phone. (This is something Whole Foods can do.) I was told they aren't able to do that. I said there was no way I was going to go back just to get a refund of a few dollars, so I would "eat it" without eating them. Andy then offered to send me a cash refund in the mail! Wow! I thanked him and kind of forgot about it. I've attached a pic of what showed up in the mail. It's been sitting on my desk since then. For someone that does sporadic grocery shopping, I absolutely love Trader Joes! I am the kind of person that shops meal by meal. I also don't typically buy fresh produce or vegetables/fruits often! I have to say that whenever I come to Trader Joes, I instantly gravitate to their cheese selection! Trader Joes has some AMAZING cheeses. My favorite is the Creamy Toscano Cheese Soaked in Syrah. This cheese is seriously the most delicious cheese you will ever have! A MUST purchase. We also recently tried the Rosemary Asiago cheese which again was just delicious! Whenever at Trader Joes, we also almost always stock up on their frozen foods which have yet to disappoint us! We have tried all of their fried rice's, gnocchi meals and have loved everything. Another MUST purchase is the Orange Chicken. This was outstanding! They also have a good selection of wines for very reasonable prices. The customer service here is wonderful.
