Another budget grocery shopping option comes to Portland from a European-based company. Not a lot of inventory, but what is there is very reasonably priced. Not enough there to do ALL of your grocery shopping, but great for a foundation or for supplementing, especially if you know the standard cost of the items you are buying. For my mental price comparison of ALDI to Costco and Hannaford (aso owned by an EU company), I found quite a few items were less expensive than both, and will be adding ALDI to my rotation of "specialty" stores aimed at keeping grocery costs down. Fun fact: ALDI and Trader Joe's are owned by the same family, but different corporations. The ALDI brothers (Karl and Theo Albrecht) split their business in the 60's over a decision on whether or not to sell cigarettes in their stores. They both went on to acquire different grocery stores and chains in Europe, the UK and U.S.

**November 2025: Friday Night Visit**…read more I needed to pick up some quart size sandwich bags, and this super market had that and so much more. I'm amazed by how huge this store was and the variety of everything you could ever need and more. I also liked that there are different sections that have Maine Made items and that there are little signs that say "local" if you wanted to pick up some regional items. I really wanted to pick up some fresh Maine milk, and Maple BBQ sauce, but unfortunately since I was at the tail end of my roadtrip I couldn't take much expect for a small bag of salt and vinegar potato chips and my sandwich bags; however, if I come back to Portland, I'll know where I can buy some regional goodies!

There are plenty of pre-made options if you're looking for food on the go (although the chicken wings at $9.99 a pound are a total rip off), a dedicated local product section (please expand!), and some interesting international offerings (chive dumplings!). My only complaint is that it is weirdly organized - like the pasta sauce and pasta section at the end of the wine aisle (wine and pasta do go together, but in a grocery store?). I would love to see this location expand the local and international offerings, and maybe have some kind of newsletter? It feels like a community hub, and I know they do a lot to help the immigrant community but it wasn't very apparent to me as a customer.

There is only a small amount of vendors that are in this building. I came by the Portland Public Market House with my husband for lunch on a Thursday afternoon, before noon. But the building here itself doesn't really offer than many eateries and think this place has so much potential. I think there should be more seating though for those patrons that wish to dine in.

Yes, the parking lot is as…read morechaotic as ever, but I've actually noticed really good precautionary steps during this time. I've seen people at the entrance basically being bouncers (making sure the store is keeping up with how many people can be inside at once, directing folks to which carts are sanitized, asking people to put masks on). I've also seen more signs throughout the store reminding people to have masks -- I will say that until recently, maybe 50% were actually wearing them but that seems to have changed since the governor's order. Admittedly, it doesn't seem like anyone is really paying attention to the direction signs on the floor about flow of traffic within the aisles, but are still being pretty respectful of each other's space anyway. The staff seems as friendly as ever, there's *a lot* more out of stock than ever before, but getting in and getting out does seem quicker than ever since no one is socializing or taking their time perusing items. I know I try I only buy what I touch!

I was searching for a slice this afternoon and immediately knew my target when I saw a photo of the pillowy Sicilian pizza here. It was even better than it looked, and it looked great. The crust tastes like a fresh baked focaccia, the sauce has a lush flavor (the sauce was the star of the pizza if I had to choose), and the cheese was a substantial herb-topped layer without being heavy. It's also approximately 9 for a large "slab" that could easily be split for lunch. This is also some of the only pizza I've ever had that is similar to the Sicilian slices I had growing up in Cambridge and going to Armando's (for any Bostonians that may know!) so it had a nostalgic element for me. Other than the pizza, I'll take this opportunity to express my love and appreciation for Micucci. This Italian grocery store is as mom-and-pop as it gets, and the vibes, products, and prices show it! Their selection is so impressive; everything from oils to pasta to wines, and even a deli with all the best cheeses and meats (best guanciale in town!!!). I just love this place!
