Most musical instrument retailers have floor samples of the big three: Roland, Yamaha, Casio. All of those I tried didn't satisfy for various and personally important reasons. Mostly like the keyboard didn't feel like an acoustic piano or the simulated piano sounds were too fake electronic. Was motivated to visit as Stanroy is a Kawai digital piano authorized seller which no other local sellers carry. I've been an occasional Stanroy customer since 1973. In the dark distant past I have purchased guitars, amplifiers, percussion instruments, even a few real German made pear wood recorders. But it's been decades since my last purchase. Was always satisfied with the shopping and purchasing process. Today, played the Kawai KDP-120 digital piano. Keyboard action feels like a "real" piano. The sound models are remarkably pleasing. Close your eyes and you'd be hard pressed to hear that it's digital. The construction is solid. Industry reputation for reliability is excellent. MSRP for the piano is $1599. Stanroy price = $1199. Sold! Nice folks. Stanroy is a real musical instrument store in that they sell and service orchestral instruments. Only place in Sonoma County you can buy a trombone, trumpet, piccolo or French horn. All the other shops (which I also love) are basically electric guitar stores with amps, a few synthesizer keyboards , DJ tables, PA systems, one drum set, and the panoply of electronic gizmos for rock n' rollers. Stanroy, it's been too long since my previous visit until today. I promise not to stay away too long again. Highest recommendation.

The piano teacher we were paired up with was great, my child loved the weekly lessons and the relationship established throughout the course of our patronage of Speed of Sound. We were, unfortunately, quite disappointed with the logistical side of the business. We repeatedly had lessons canceled or changed with as little as an hour or two notice. There were even a number of occasions where we arrived for a lesson to find that our teacher was not available, no replacement had been organized, and as a result the front desk attendant (a student at high school) would sit in on the "lesson" for which we still had to pay full price. We also received a number of emails from the owner notifying us that we were behind on our bills, when in fact the owner hadn't sent us a bill for multiple months (I have never been late on a bill in my life and have an 840 credit score). Towards the end of our time at Speed of Sound, the school transitioned to a timeslot-based system where students would receive a weekly timeslot rather than dedicated teacher. While this system may be helpful with logistical challenges for Speed of Sound, it resulted in a real lack of continuity for my child and many of the lessons were spent familiarizing with new, random teachers and revisiting material that had already been taught. The school also instituted a policy whereby clients were not able to cancel or change lessons due to scheduling conflicts; I can understand this for group lessons, but when you're paying $70 an hour for a private lesson the lack of flexibility and randomized teacher assignment proved too much for us... We ultimately decided to enlist a private teacher outside of Speed of Sound. and have been very happy with the choice.

I would have driven all the way to you just to turn around and leave because of your fee that wasn't disclosed upfront. Most local studios and private teachers I have found to offer an initial lesson for free to see if it is a good fit. If that's is not the case with you it would be a much better business practice to be a little more upfront in the future. It feels incredibly dishonest.
