Recently I dropped off 3 Wustof knives, 1 serrated, to be sharpened and asked if they could be done in 1 day, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed that the job was completed in a little over an hour! I had to add a third review in response to the owner's response to my second review, which I wrote after they tarnished my knives. First, They claimed they haven't offered the knife special of $30 for fives knives in over 15 years- except my first review of them was written in 2013, and I took my knives there a few times after that. I always got the special which might have gone up to $35. So that is a lie on their part. The price has increased significantly in only a couple years. Again, the price is one thing, and I wouldn't have complained if they hadn't tarnished my knives. My knives were all tarnished as shown in the photo and their response implies that it was somehow my fault? That they would "never" have done that but if I still don't believe them they will polish them for free? What kind of a response is that? That is how the knives looked when I got them back. How would I do that to the knives myself? I hand wash them. I don't hold them over open flames. All my other knives are fine. I'm sorry I love supporting local businesses but this is just terrible. read more

I used to come here quite often, I actually used to go to their previous store in Kerrisdale when I worked in the area, but after my last visit I don't think I'll be back. As another reviewer mentioned, his knives were tarnished. Mine were also tarnished and discolored. Seems like too much heat or something, just carelessness in my opinion. Shouldn't happen. I mean I only brought my cheaper knives here, never my nice Japanese knives. He uses like a grinder/electric sharpener not a whetstone (done by hand). Also on my last visit besides the discoloring, they did not stay sharp for long either. They got dull really fast. I think I came originally cuz his prices were pretty good, but the last few years the price has gone up a lot and I get it everything is expensive now but he didn't even do a good job. I haven't sharpened my knives, ever. This is probably a common occurrence for the average person. But when you think of how often you use your knives in everyday cooking, they really do deserve a good sharpening every so often. I brought two of my workhorse knives in (kitchen knives I use on the daily), as well as my kitchen scissors. I was greeted warmly and with friendly service. Even better, they do it all same day! I was able to return just a couple hours later to my VERY sharp knives and scissors. Two long blade knives ($10 ea) and scissors ($9) are ultra sharp now. Highly recommended! read more

I had been using this place for my all knives both pocket and kitchen since before they moved from their original location on West Boulevard. However, my last experience there was a total nightmare. I took in a very expensive Nakiri knife I purchased directly from the maker on a trip to Japan that had a very specific edge on it. I was very very clear with my instruction to not change the angle of the knife edge and to simply sharpen and maintain its original angle. They did not follow anything.... instead the knife was sharpened with a much different angle. Something you would use on a typical chef knife. This totally changes the performance of the knife.... When i went to pick up the knife and saw what they had done and complained, the sharpener tried to convince me this what 'how i brought the knife in'.... then the owner stepped in and had him attempt to correct the problem at the cost of having to grind away what he had done and attempt to return the original edge to the knife. needless to say the knife is not what it once was. I guess my bad for taking in a high quality knife to them. They tried to make it better by offering me a complimentary sharpening for my next visit, however I will never take any of my knives here again. I would highly recommend if you love your knives as much as I do or they are very expensive ones, take them to anyone else. Just not this place. read more

It was the second time I used this business. They are fast and do a great job. I dropped the knives and scissors off at 11 am and was told they'd text when they were ready. They thought it would be around 1 pm. At 1:15 pm I got a text they were ready. The knives slice as good as new. read more

Expecting to wait a day or two for this larger order, I was surprised to learn that all work would be completed by closing time (5pm). A few hours later I returned to pick up my knives and scissors. I was delighted to see the quality of the work. Some of the blades had bent over the years, and they were straightened. My scissors and my knives are now razor-blade sharp and I am a happy camper. I had to get my wood chisels sharpened to finish refurbishing my dresser, and it turns out this company was the only one open on Saturdays. I was looking for a company that specialized in tool sharpening...but all the rest were closed on weekends. But let me tell you, Sean (the owner) sharpened my wood chisels and made them look like new, while I waited. This place is great. My knives are sharper than when they were new. Even my Shun santoku feels sharper than new. This guy knows his stuff, and charges a reasonable price. (8$ / knife larger than 5"). Great small little place, hand done with high quality machines. This guy can sharpen your knife so sharp that you can start cutting hairs in half! He got my cheap henkles to less than a 20 degree angle and refinished the tip for the same price as any House of Knives could do and 10 times sharper. Watch out! Highly recommended. read more

After struggling for years to find a place to sharpen my now aging Wüsthofs (fearing I might have to replace them?!), a gift certificate to Sharpening House restored my knives to pristine condition. Sharpening House even tackled a pair of scissors that have been butchered cutting up wire!! I cannot recommend them more!! Based on the yelp reviews I took in a new replica dadao chinese war sword that came damaged from shipping. $7 and less than an hour later and the blade was re-tipped and looking pristine as if the damage never even happened. How awesome is that? I was drawn to this business by other Yelp reviews. I was very pleased with the quality of the sharpening. My knives were not ready when the sharpener's son had promised(a last minute emergency came up that I was called and told about and I give the business the benefit of the doubt). However, the knives were promised again a day later and I even picked them up a few hours ahead schedule. The owner/sharpener apologized for the delay and offered a discount which I appreciated. The knives were expertly sharpened as were some scissors. I definitely will go back there again when my knives need resharpening. Excellent work and quick turnaround! I brought my nakiri knife to be sharpened and repaired (it had chipped when attempting to hack at a kabocha squash). I was told it'd be ready in an hour but picked it up the next morning instead because I was feeling lazy and in doubt that it would be ready so quickly. At pickup, I was charged $7 for sharpening and $9 for the repair--much less than I would have expected. The knife came back shinier than when I got it, and the owner demonstrated the sharpness by cutting a page out of a newspaper. He advised me to just use the knife for meat and vegetables (not squashes!) and wrapped it up in the dishtowel I brought for me to bring safely home. Now I know where to go when my knives need a new life! read more

A few years ago, I brought a really nice JAHenckels knife back from Germany for my daughter. I recently found out that a former roommate used it to cut a tree... don't ask how he confused it with a tree saw. The blade was cracked and bent, one tang was loose and my daughter thought the knife was beyond hope, but in 40 minutes, we had a knife that looks perfect and is so sharp we can't believe it! Sharpening was $8, "fixing" it was $5 and we are thrilled to have this knife in use again... the tangs are all tight again, too! BTW, when I was there, I found out they're moving soon to #111 - 511 W. 7th, near Cambie. Go find them -- they're really great! read more

I took my Henkle carving knife in to get sharpened. The owner asks me if 1/2 hour is ok? It came back raszor sharp so I took my Global paring knife in as well. Same quality work on this one. I can shave hairs on my arm with both. High quality work and a decent price. What a great find but he is moving in the next year due to work on the building. He is not sure where yet but I will find him and continue to take all my knives to him. read more

My first time taking knives to be sharpened, so I don't have a point of comparison ... but these folks are really nice, and the service was quick and knives came out just as I wanted. Both my chef's knife and pairing knife were embarrassingly dull and had slightly crooked ends. I dropped off the knives, went and shopped at Whole Foods over one block, and 40 minutes later I came back to two perfectly straight and sharp knives. read more
