The only thing that stinks is the price. It's very expensive to eat there, especially for dinner time. It is nearly $20/person. It was one of those days I had forgotten to bring lunch to work, so my coworkers and I decided to go out for some Indian food. Upon entering the restaurant, I was pleased with the decor, which was somewhat elegant (white tablecloths, glassware, etc.) and understated. We were quickly seated and given waters by an efficient, if not gruff, waiter. Perhaps one of the owners? Apparently, naan (the best I've ever had!) is complimentary and so is the grilled chicken kabobs. You can choose how you want your naan--regular, spicy, or garlic--and you'll soon receive perfectly seasoned, fluffy goodness. We couldn't understand our waiter very well so we're worried we had accidentally ordered an appetizer. Never fret though--it's free! I would return just for the naan.... The lunch buffet at Sharma's is simple and not the biggest I've seen; however, everything I tried was pretty tasty, especially the spicy eggplant curry and goat curry. The samosas were just okay--a bit bland. They also had a small salad bar and 2 dessert options: rice pudding and some kind of sweet donuts covered in syrup. I cannot believe how good the ratings on yelp are. The person working when I went was pretty rude. It seemed like from the moment we walked in she was in a rush for us to leave. When others came in and explained they had made a reservation through Facebook she just kept telling them no and that she didn't have their reservation. Eventually they convinced her to pull up Facebook and then she saw they did have a reservation. The food serving was very small and was 15 dollars... the food also wasn't good. The rice had no flavor whatsoever, and the dish I ordered just tasted like cream. It didn't taste like any other spices. I also decided to spend 3 more dollars to try their spicy naan which said it had green chiles cooked into it. When it came to my table it had oil and red pepper flakes on the top of it. I didn't send it back based on how rude she had been previously. It's my least favorite Indian food I've ever had. Ding Dong! Let's get the one negative out of the way. Don't sit by the door (Ding Dong!) because every time someone comes in or out there is a draft and a (Ding Dong!) door bell. We were there at peak time on a weekend night, so our advice is go early (or at lunch, or on a weeknight) so you can get a good seat and be guaranteed lots of your favorite dish from the buffet! Because this is the kind of place you don't visit for the ambiance. You go for the FOOD. And it is absolutely tremendous. When you sit down, they ask you for a naan order (plain, garlic, or chili) with either tender chicken tikka kabob or paneer that comes sizzling on a cast iron skillet. We had the chicken. It came fresh and hot to the table, prepared just for us and oh so delicious. There was no room for dessert. I usually prefer Indian restaurants where I can order off the menu, so I was skeptical when it became clear everyone was doing the buffet. But wow! The buffet was amazing. So many choices, and everything I tried was well prepared and expertly spiced: goat curry, lamb tikka masala, chicken kofta, baigan bharta, aloo gobi, vegetable biryani, pakoras, chana masala and more I don't remember. The mixed pickle was awesome - heavy on the garlic, hot, and a nice complement to everything. Vegetarians will love that there is a whole buffet set aside with all vegetarian dishes. There is also a salad bar, if you are into that kind of thing... but the best part of the salad bar for me was that it also offered an array of condiments - pickles and mint and tamarind sauce and so on... yum! It seems like a nice place initially and we decided to try it based on Yelp Reviews. The people were super nice but as a fellow Desi, the food was honestly the worst I've ever had. Everything tasted weirdly sweet, dry, or under seasoned. We also realized the food was just warmed up leftovers. Who makes undercooked Kheer? My boyfriend and I ended up throwing up everything a few hours later. I'm beyond shocked to think people would say it's the best they've had..i only wish they can have real Indian food. Sharma's Kitchen has some of the best Indian food in town. While a favorite of ours is located on campus (Khana Khazana) this one is better for Lafayette residents. Every table gets their choice of naan (original, garlic, or spicy) as well as chicken kabobs or paneer. We got the garlic naan & paneer--both were great! The buffet offers all of the "traditional" Indian food items, but their clear stand outs are their chicken tikka masala & eggplant bharta. All of the sauces, spices blend well together and having the naan & rice to soak everything up is great. I also enjoy the curry cauliflower, pea, & potato mix. This restaurant is a great option for vegetarians! Of course dinner wouldn't be complete without dessert. I love their kheer & gulab jamun. The kheer is a cold rice pudding-the lighter of the two options & the cool sensation is nice after a warm, spicy meal. The gulab jamun are golden fried balls of "dough" that soak in a warm, syrup. They are juicy and rich--a few will do the trick. I've never been for their traditional plated meal, but their buffet is great. I would recommend it to anyone. *Side note--it tends to be chilly in the restaurant, so bring a sweater. read more

Sharma's Kitchen is the best Indian Restaurant in the Lafayette area. It is a family run restaurant and definitely has a family feel to it. Sharma had worked all over the world. He has worked in India, Japan, and Germany before coming to the United States. He takes alot of pride in his work and it shows. He often comes from the back of the kitchen to check on his customers. This allows him and his wife to develop a personal relationship with many regular customers that adds to the family feel. I would definitely recommend the buffet for first timers. It changes daily and you can check what the days offerings are on their Facebook. The buffet always comes with naan, kebabs, meat options, vegetarian options, as well as desert. You can also order a delicious mango lassi or beer served in an ice cold mug to compliment your meal. The chai is also delicious. If you haven't had Indian food before, then this is the perfect place to try a little of everything and avoid buyer's remorse. Normally at a restaurant you'd have to dish out half your paycheck to try such a wide variety of Indian cuisine, but on the weekends for lunch it's only $14 at Sharma's! I invariably leave the restaurant with a food coma. Life Pro Tip: Eat here for lunch and if you're doing buffets correctly, you shouldn't need to eat dinner. I spend at least an hour and half here, so every inch of my body absorbs the sweet aroma of Indian food. I think I was unduly harsh before. We ordered takeout from here, and it was much better than our experience at the buffet - the food was hotter (temperature-wise) and we were able to request it spicier so it tasted more like the Indian food I'm used to. I still don't think the food is all that great, but I'm not sure it's appreciably worse than our go-to Indian place in town, Khana Khazana. There's still something "off" to me about the butter chicken sauce, even when it has some heat it still somehow tastes very bland (too much cream perhaps?) but it isn't terrible and I like that they use white meat chicken. My favorite restaurant in greater Lafayette! The food is served on a buffet, but in small batches (so the entrees don't get hammered sitting on top of the sterno). Extraordinarily vegetarian friendly. One side of the restaurant is veggie, while the other side has meat dishes. The food is alright, but the lady at the counter (who also owns the place) is VERY rude. I called them to check if they do to-go dinners (which they call "combo" ). The guy answered my call, and told me that they do. But when I went to pickup the dinner, the lady rudely told me that they have stopped doing combo dinners. When I confronted her that I had checked before driving there, the guy whom I spoke to over phone came forward to let me take the to-go dinner. As I sat at one of the tables while I waited for the food, the lady told me that I cannot sit at the table cuz I am ONLY getting a to-go dinner. Considering that the place wasn't even half full when I was there (and no way its gonna be full cuz its a weekday), I thought she was being rude. RUDE owner and weird awkward servers. The food is good and we went several times. Honestly though, I cannot even bring myself to come back because of how incredibly awkward it is dining here. The most recent visit put it over the edge, the owner lady asked if we were ready to order literally one minute after she gave us the menu. The two white nerdy servers are just as bad, they know nothing about the menu so they bring the wrong food, and you can't ask them about anything. I want to go back but it feels like some sort of weird psychological experiment in making people as uncomfortable as possible. The owner lady wasn't as bad the first time but the more times we came, the ruder she got. The two servers were strange and inept everytime! This place would do better if no one served at all honestly, I cannot emphasize enough how awkward I feel everytime I go, as if we are bothering them by coming in the door. The only redeeming character here is the Mexican server, he tries really hard. But as hard as he tried, he cannot make up for the rudeness and complete ignorance and incompetence of the rest of the staff. Considered ordering to go, but I witnessed that same lady scooping things from the buffet into to go containers for people who called in orders. We went to their buffet. It is expensive and full of creamy curries if you are into it. Food variety is one of the best that I have seen in an Indian buffet, but gravy is so heavy that you won't be able to enjoy the food. Your stomach will get stuffed before you can relish the food. I tried pretty much everything, and it all tasted fresh and not "buffet-y". The gulab jamun (sp?) was life changing. Maybe not life changing, but definitely night-making. Don't look up the caloric content after you have just shoved ten down your throat. If you have any questions the wait staff is extremely happy to answer them. Selection wise, it's fairly similar to Khana Khazana, but I have found the food at Sharma's to be fresher and the overall environment to be cleaner. Sharma's also provides fresh naan and chicken kabab with the buffet. Plenty of "safe" items for people new to Indian cuisine, and usually some good vegetarian selections. I really wanted to like Sharma's Kitchen. Many of my friends love it and serves halal food. However, I have been bombarded with rude service every time I have went here! The last time I encountered something rude from them was when my husband and I took my mother out for Mother's Day. We had both lost our jobs so my mother was willing to pay for the evening. The lady behind the counter kept dropping hints that I should be paying because she felt it was rude to have my mother paying for her own meal. I tried to brush it off, because she couldn't possibly understand what my family was going through. However, she kept pushing and pushing and even rolling her eyes at me when I tried to dance around the fact politely that I wouldn't have the money for our $50 meal and that we all had agreed to pay in this manner. She just kept saying she couldn't believe any child would do that. When our finances and how we pay for our food should EVER be her business. So. So. So rude. Finally, I have many issues previously when attempting to order more than one cup of chai. I didn't mind having to pay for more, but they were acting like I was really annoying them because they would have to put in the effort to make another cup and they let me know it was an inconvenience every time. She has even commented on how I don't have to cover my face once, when I started incorporating it into my wardrobe over a year ago. They are most popular for their buffet which is overpriced given the choice of dishes they offer and the quality of their food. Today was my 6th visit here and it was not pleasant. I have gone to Sharma's kitchen at least 8 times within the past year, and it is my favorite restaurant in Lafayette. All the times I have gone I have had the buffet, and the selection is amazing. In terms of Indian food in the greater Lafayette area it is the best, and it is also the only place that I have found to have goat on their menu in Lafayette, if anyone knows of another place that has goat I will be interested in knowing. The dinner buffet with tax comes in at just over $17, but it is definitely worth the price. The restaurant has a nice decor and the buffet had a nice selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian items. Two items that we had never had before were the green beans and the deep-fried cauliflower...both were very good. I would return just for the cauliflower. I did carryout tonight for the second time from Sharma's. It was excellent all around. We had the Pani Puri appetizer, which was served piecemeal as a carryout order. I had never eaten it and didn't know what to expect, so I was surprised at how it was served. Since the breads are crisp it made sense to do carryout this way. For entrees we had Baighan Bharta & Navratan Korma. My wife and I enjoyed them both. I preferred the Baighan Bharta, she preferred the Korma so that worked out well. But they were both delicious. Our naan was good as well. I checked out the buffet while I was picking up the food and the host told a server to package up a small dessert from the buffet for free. Very nice! The service is great and the food was excellent. In my previous review I noted the small portions, but that was not the case this time. We both have enough left for lunch tomorrow. However, the rice portion is too small to be served with our leftovers...luckily I knew and ordered a second side of rice. All in all I was very happy and we plan on dining in to eat at the buffet in the future. Update: I have eaten at the buffet about seven times now. I love it. Palak Paneer and Balti Bhukra are always excellent. Even my children (1 & 4 yrs old) love them. Basically all the vegetarian dishes are good. Avoid all the chicken....overcooked for sure. Goat holds up well on buffets, so if you need meat, that's where you go. Samosas are hit or miss. The only knock on Sharma's is consistency. At the buffet, if they screw up a dish, you just eat the other stuff. Carryout is more risky...sometimes there must be a crazy/different/new chef and everything tastes crappy. Worth the risk though. I have been to this restaurant several times since it opened in October, and every time has been as delightful as it was delicious. They offer Indian street food, which is fantastic; this includes the bhel puri and pani puri. You don't see these particular items anywhere else at such high quality. Sometimes my significant other and I get the buffet, other times we order from the menu. There are many omnivorous as well as vegetarian options served with rice for the main course. If you do eat meat, this restaurant spices it really well. I find at other Indian restaurants that they don't spice the meat before they put it in sauce (which makes for a low quality, disappointing meal). If you don't eat meat, then the vegetable/paneer dishes will be pleasing to you as well. The servers, host/hostess and chef are all very kind, and they enjoy receiving input on your opinions of the food and atmosphere. There has never been a problem with service. The overall decor is pleasant and doesn't follow the stereotypical styles that I've seen in other restaurants. The setting is relaxed, and most importantly, it is *clean*. We tried Sharma's at the request of family members who participate in a dinner club.We were in the back room away from everyone so we could ask questions and spread out, which was nice. The decor was simple but very nice. I was excited to see that it was a mini-buffet so we could try many food items. The appetizer were tasty, but the buffet items were less than desirable. I tried everything there was to offer, but nothing really stood out as amazing. The sauces were good, but I wasn't quite sure what to do with them and didn't want to eat rice with everything. The best Indian lunch buffet I've ever had! I love Indian food, but am not comfortable enough to eat it outside of a buffet format; therefore, I've been to a good number of different (over 20) buffets throughout my travels. There are a few things that set this one apart from the rest: 1- Fresh naan, with an assortment of flavors, delivered to your table at arrival. 2- Your choice of kabobs cooked to order and delivered to your table. (I went with chicken) 3-Detailed descriptions of each dish on the buffet. The food was delicious! I was shocked that it wasn't as spicy as I've had in the past; it appears as if the food is prepared with Americans' palates in mind. I loved the variety of flavors: sweet, savory, and spicy. My friend, who ordinarily shys away from spicy food, was able to enjoy all the dishes. The chicken masala was the best I've ever had, hands down! I really have no complaints about the taste and quality of the food. The only downside, which I am willing to overlook, is the lack of Palak Paneer (the spinach dish). By far, the best Indian food in town. -- I've tried quite a few restaurants around in Lafayette and West Lafayette and this is the best taste I can find. Buffet is very good. I have yet to truly try the menu and I'm still fully satisfied.
