This is going to be a very honest review. The $45 sessions are only for 30 minute work outs - no one tells you that when you are going through intake. Markshane does your intake and takes you through a great work out but his schedule is so limited that he will try to pawn you off on one of his other trainers. Overall my training wasn't a horrible experience but Markshane's attitude is honestly very off-putting, sometimes even rude and unprofessional. If you are 2-5 minutes late he will berate you about it the ENTIRE time while you're working out and speak down to you like an angry father. In one session he actually told me to "SHUT UP!" when I was making noise while lifting. I wanted to quit immediately but because of the cancellation policy I had to stay on for a whole other month and I dreaded having to go interact with his negative energy. In my personal opinion I believe there's just too much ego for my liking. It felt like I should be so grateful to be working out with him and that he's making time for me in his very tight schedule. It's unfortunate when business owners forget that they are there to be of service to their clients, not the other way around. read more

I absolutely love the studio. My trainers have been incredible and the owner is incredibly supportive. I cannot express how much I enjoy coming here. I have been on the longest journey of my life. I have basically been overweight my entire life, it wasn't until my adulthood when I decided I need to lose weight. I tried everything pills shots diet plans memberships... everything. I finally found a lifestyle that fit me it was hard at first. There were many ups and downs but I finally figured it out. The studio contacted me at about 50% of my weight loss. I haven't done any exercise and just focused on nutrition because I felt that was the biggest part f my issue. I had lost a good amount of weight but how built no strength or endurance. Markshane reach out to me via Instagram I said of course I was a perfect candidate and wanted to talk to me. In my head before this I always thought it's all about nutrition who cares about exercise I see tons of people losing large amounts of weight without exercise, I can totally do that. Granted I might have said yes because I'm a huge Bella twins fan, but who better to talk to you about fitness then their trainer?! I decided to invest in my health, one of the smartest decisions I've made. But in reality you need that fitness, you need the strength you need the endurance to keep yourself healthy. Actually I don't know what you need I know what I need. It's been a long journey, I love coming here. They make me feel welcomed, they support me and they care. also I want to mention they also what my ass every time trust me there's many days where I am on the floor after my workout not sure if I can get up lol read more

I've been coming here for years. I always look forward to my training sessions with Markshane. No matter how I feel when I enter the gym, I always have a great workout and leave feeling great. Markshane has helped me to become bigger and stronger than I ever thought possible. I found it extremely difficult to gain muscle mass, but Markshane seems to be able to push me that extra bit that I needed to get the results I was looking for. Markshane always made my program work for me and not for him. Markshane is always very professional in every conceivable way: his knowledge, punctuality, attention to detail, and his ability to develop my weak areas. read more

I've been working out with MarkShane for 3 weeks now and it's been a great experience! He's made it easy and convenient but most importantly, the workouts are challenging and effective. I'm a busy mom of 3, a business owner, and I work full time. MarkShane gives me a full body workout with effective strength training and cardio in one session. I feel like my sessions are Individualized to my level and goals. He's always on time and always gives me my full session time. All of my muscles are sore for a few days after each workout so I know I'm gaining results. I'm excited to see how my body changes in the next few weeks! Thank you MarkShane. read more

Markshanne and crew are amazing. Extremely accommodating. He and staff are extremely professional and he knows his craft for sure. He makes whatever your overall health goals attainable and gives very simple instructions for meal planning. I really enjoyed my time there and hope to get back after COVID. The atmosphere was always welcoming. read more

I am a previous trainer and loved my clients, however working for Markshane was what made me last only 6 months. He does not pay you well, at all. $12 a session is what you get (without tax yet) when he has the clients spend anywhere from $35-$50 a session! He profits so much and pays his trainers a laughable paycheck. His communication skills are this: ZERO, or only at HIS convenience. I know this for a fact because he has selective hearing and reading skills as CLIENTS HAVE COMPLAINED about Markshane to me while I've trained them, during our session. Markshane is the problem, straight up as he displays minimal professionalism behind closed doors. Be aware and don't waste your time. Wont text trainers or clients back when It has anything to do with getting paid on time (which twice I was not paid on time) or getting refunded, he's not even man enough to come to you and reach out himself, he has his wife Jennifer do the dirty work behind the scenes. Believe me when I say you don't want to waste your time, money, or effort training here or working for a man or boss like Markshane. He had the highest trainer turnover rate I've seen. My advice to Markshane is to become a better small business owner, pay your employees much better and work in your communication skills. You are seen as a robot with no personality who only wants to get paid himself and take care of himself. read more

I was always physically active as I was growing up but after I entered college and eventually started to work, I found it difficult to make time to exercise. A friend wanted to start working out at Shape Up Studio and needed a partner so I went along. That was six years ago and it was the best thing that I ever did for my overall well-being. After each workout, I feel better both physically and mentally. I call my workout sessions "my therapy". Markshane tailors the workouts to each client and to each individual's overall goals. I currently workout three days a week and after all of this time I am still amazed at what he comes up with for me to do. A lot of the exercises build on one another so the clients are able to see and feel the progress. Since I have been going to Shape Up Studio I have also started to play softball two nights a week and recently I finished 3rd overall in a 5K in which there were over 300 participants. Since I have been going to Shape Up Studio I am more confident in myself with everything that I do and my energy level as well as my concentration have improved dramatically. I am now at the point where if I am unable to workout at Shape Up Studio due to work travel, I feel like I am going through withdrawals and I can't wait to return home so I can workout with Markshane. The professionalism and encouragement that Markshane gives during the workouts and his interest in each and every client's well-being is truly refreshing and always appreciated. I always recommend Shape Up Studio to my friends and coworkers who want to improve themselves through an improved body and better overall health. I've been going for 6 weeks and have lost 10lbs, feel stronger, and I'm totally motivated. Mark is amazing and makes you feel special every time you walk in the door. Just wanted to leave a more updated review. I'm a disabled Veteran and was looking for a place that could really work with me, as I have gotten out of shape. I'm also a business owner, so my time frames are limiting to say the least. Marc will work with you and work out times for your schedule. I work 70+ hours some weeks, and sometimes I have to cancel. Conveniently, you are able to text them and let them know if you can't make a session - This is great for people with busy lifestyles. I went to a gold's gym and was interested in personal training as well, when I was searching for the right fit. One of the 'regional' managers was trying to accommodate my schedule and pricing, and within 10 minutes he was asking me how much I wanted to spend and how often I would come in. To compile the paragraphs above, they take time and really get to know who you are, how you work, and what your goal is. Not just a work out regimen 'one size fits all' type of thing. I ended up paying more to work with Marc, on a more frequent basis, simply because he not only was willing to work with my schedule but did what his title is supposed to and made it feel like it was a 'personal' trainer. Not just a fitness junkie telling you what works for everyone. He doesn't only focus on working out. He has a personalized work out schedule when you're with him, plans you can take home and do at home, Whoever the husband of that woman who said they couldn't work out because he was in pain is pretty funny too. I have 1 leg, 1 eye, missing my left pectorial, and i'm in pain all the time and I still work out. I had a surgery during the course of my personal training and Marc walked me through it, and was careful with my injury while still pushing me in other areas that he knew I could work out. If he was pushing them to come in, it was because Marc and everybody else knows that just because you have one injury, doesn't mean you 'can't workout' at all. Great guy, great place, the other trainers are very formal and accommodating as well, I recommend them to my friends and family all of the time. - Mike read more

Markshane is hands down the best trainer I have ever seen, which is a bummer because he ripped me off. I paid for 100 training sessions and only got 15 of them. I was injured, distracted, and lost motivation. When I tried to come back, he said those sessions expired. No expiration date was ever discussed. I looked into this and it is against the law in California to have an expiration date for a service when paid with cash. I mentioned this to him and still nothing came of it. read more

I tried out this studio for personal training sessions via a promo package which seemed quite promising. The location was convenient for me; the atmosphere was private and low key, a small studio tucked away among industrial offices. The personal attention was nice during the sessions, I'm unsure of how their rates stack up against competitors as this studio seemed pricey. I figured business owners would make every effort to not just attract new clientele but also retain them...was not the case here. The owner, Markshane, took on the new clientele for the package deal and each of the four sessions was a hassle to coordinate. For example, my fourth session was rescheduled because he had a court appearance to make and turned out the new appointment time wasn't going to work for me so I had to forfeit the last session because this realization was last minute. Considering I paid an extremely fair (bargain) price for the introductory offer, I didn't really sweat losing one session. I just didn't feel he had a vested interest in my personal health or fitness goals (don't get me wrong, I showed up and worked hard during the sessions, I'm not lazy or trying to place the success or failure upon anyone other than myself) it's just that I quite likely can spend less on a monthly basis to be treated like a number elsewhere. read more

I was lucky enough to meet Markshane a few years back and a friend of mine and I started working with him twice a week. I grew up playing sports and training and I'm also a volleyball coach, so I train other athletes. Unfortunately I had gotten a bit out of shape over the years. I'll NEVER forget our first workout with Markshane, He worked us so hard and pushed us just past where we would've stopped on our own. After that first workout I left the gym and started to drive away and had to pull over because I was such a mess haha. I called my girlfriend and told her I think I might die. She said "are you going back on Thursday?" I said "heck yes!! anyone that could kick my butt this good is worth EVERY penny!!!" and he certainly is. read more

Ok - heres some honesty for you -- I had seen Markshane at the networking events I attend and thought to myself to stay far and away from him. I'm out of shape and the idea of a trainer scares me. BUT one day he corners me, I'm a deer in headlights, I cant get away. I say something to the effect of, "look man, you really dont want to waste your time w me" sounds sadder than I meant it. I just meant that I really cant be sold on the idea of being at a gym with fit people and being so unfit and not having the time/money/insert various other excuses here. BUT, i went in for a consult and I've never been happier at a gym anywhere anytime. Everyone is so positive and so focused on wellness. I actually LOOK FORWARD TO MY VISITS (who have i become!!) I work hard and feel amazing. I am so lucky to have taken the plunge in going to the consult. I feel like I am gaining so much more than muscle. Markshane and his staff are so helpful and so quick to be motivating but also to lending a kind word. This is the sort of place everyone should find. This Shape Up Studio turns the idea of working out upside down for me - from a serious frown to a huge smile. read more

My experience started out well. However, it became more difficult to schedule regular training sessions and even more difficult to schedule the make up sessions on Saturdays. If you don't remind them the of the make-up sessions needed then you just will not receive them. I did not like being handed off to different trainers, which lacked consistency. Over the course of 3.5 months, there were no weighs, no assessments how I was doing. I finally lost my motivation and quit. read more

Training with Markshane has been a blast! My wife and I were able to get into phenomenal shape for our wedding and his knowledge and passion comes through in every session. The variety in exercises is great, and he pushes you at a sustainable, yet challenging level. All of this in a perfect sized gym, with no waiting ever and an inspiring environment. As a side note, Markshane is a phenomenal people person and 'connector', as he even took a lot of time to help me make new introductions to help me professionally. Thank you Markshane and team! read more

Seriously awesome! I worked out with Anatoliy for about a year at Shape Up Studio. He was a fantastic trainer, and from what I saw it looks like everyone there is a fantastic trainer. Markshane was excellent and from our initial consultation I knew that I would stay. They pushed me much further than I ever would have myself, and I saw great results in a short amount of time. The price is MUCH more reasonable than any of the gym chains, and the personal attention at this intimate fitness studio is amazing. This is the only place that I recommend for personal training when people ask. read more

Been working out here for years. So I get my fitness on it rocks! MarkShane, and Mike, and Burke, and Israel are the best!

MarkShane is not the trainer that I thought he was going to be. I am like one of the previous reviews that he up sells you in the beginning and then hands you off to another trainer with no explanation or reason. When I went to the first session with this 'new' trainer, he had me do workouts that were outside my experience. I was a beginner to working out with a trainer, he had me doing workouts that totally for someone who has been working out for years. I never returned after that session and both MarkShane and his wife would not work with my sessions and payments. They sent me to collections for non payment. Thankfully, I just recently found a new trainer that is totally awesome, honest and upfront. I told him about my experience with this place, without telling him the name of the gym. He asked me who it was. When I told him it was Shape Up Studios, he told me that this is the worst gym to go to. MarkShane is a fake and money hungry. He flat out told me not to make any payments to them or to the collection agency. My trainer also told me that he was going to work there as a trainer but ended up not working there cause he had people tell him how horrible MarkShane as a person and trainer. I would totally stay away from this place. Don't sign up cause you are not going to get what you pay for. read more

Markshane is awesome! I lost 30lbs and feel great. If you want an affordable quality trainer he comes highly recommended.

I get taken to new limits every workout, thats what a trainer is for! Highly recommend.

Ok what can I say but EXCELLENT personal trainers. This studio is a great place to workout as it focuses on the individual in all aspects of health, not just fitness. I have been training much of my adult life and my experience at MarkShane has been my most successful. My trainer is GREG. What can I say about Greg.... ok, i have lost 40lbs, and lost inches, and gained muscles where i wanted them! I had muscles before, but now I can actually see them!!! As you know, muscle is heavier than fat and I still lost 40lbs! I'm so excited as I have FINALLY reached a goal I have been trying to achieve for over 20 years! GREG not only cares about his clients fitness level he cares about diet and nutrition and inner strength of mind! He believes in more than just being fit or losing weight! i have learned so much from him about physiology, psychology, anatomy, philosophy, and much more. I can't sing his praises enough! I train with him 3 times a week, usually in some form of mixed martial arts..... which I LOVE.....we always focus on certain body parts for the hour and the stretching is a wonderful release at the end of a hard workout! He is soooo worth the money and even the money isn't as much as you would find at most independent studios. If you are interested in training hard and achieving the results you have been looking for, then GREG is your man, and MarkShane is the studio! Oh, and ladies.....he's easy on the eyes too! To any prospective clients, I would not recommend training at Shape Up Studio. To be fair, I'll give the good and the bad: The Good: This is a clean and comprehensive gym that has everything one needs to get into excellent shape. The facility is impressive and all of the equipment is well maintained. I enjoyed going to the facility itself. The problem was Markshane, and his wife who keeps the books. The Bad: -Markshane seems like a salesman first, and a trainer last -The sign up process was like a bait & switch: he was animated, funny, encouraging and positive (before paying) at the intro session. After I paid up front for 3 months, in the gym he seemed indifferent and disinterested...totally different than my first impression -He handed me off to another trainer, which angered me because when I signed up, I was under the impression that he would train me. He was not transparent & honest with this process and exhibited very poor communication -He promised weekly meal plan guidance, and regular weigh-ins and body fat analysis. I had to remind him several times to send me the meal guidance, and he didn't follow through with the diagnostics as promised. He was also frequently unresponsive to texts I'd send asking for the meal plans etc. This indifference was a turn-off, because again he turned out not to be what he seemed The Really Bad: -Markshane charges $15 for any session you have to reschedule regardless of the reason. This is completely unethical and unacceptable for a client who pays up front in full for a set amount of sessions. If you pay for 20 sessions up front, those sessions should be yours, and if you have an emergency you shouldn't be punished for something outside of your control. Terrible business practice, and the nickel & diming was such a turn off because of how expensive the training already is -Near the end of my 3 months, I told him I would not be continuing due to the high cost. Then I get a notice from his wife that I owed $260 and can I charge your card on file! How? I paid for all the sessions up front! She attached an invoice with the times I came to the gym and tallied everything up, but her calculations were wrong and she didn't have the dates and charges marked correctly. I had to remind her of when she charged my card and the amounts, which she overlooked, or not? I'm unsure whether this was an accounting oversight, or an intentional move to get more money? Either way, it was unacceptable and angering. Based on the way this was communicated to me, it felt shady and I had to cancel my credit card and go through all that hassle. I actually hadn't even used all of my sessions (I had to take the time to go back and do all of the accounting to prove her wrong), but I was so turned off I decided not to continue and missed out on a couple sessions...so really, they kind of owe me money. To be fair, Markshane and his wife were never rude or anything, but things just didn't meet my expectations. He shouldn't nickel & dime, have poor communication, seem unenthusiastic after getting the cash flow, and have a client be confronted by an accounting mistake...if it was a mistake. Even if it was a mistake, it was gross negligence that could've been avoided by simply thoroughly researching the issue prior to contacting the client for more money. read more

Markshane is an egotistical trainer in the worst kind of way...at least that's how he came across on the phone. My husband and I were searching for a trainer and had been in contact with a few. We were leaning towards another trainer when we heard from Markshane, but decided to call back to chat since he had called my phone so many times. He gave a typical "used car salesman" vibe which is okay because he should be selling himself. He then asked what we were offered by the other trainer and said our budget would "be the final deciding factor" if he would train us...again, I get that and they need to make money. When he heard what our budget is and that another trainer agreed to help us out, he said "You get what you pay for. Anyone who agrees to do it for that price will realize how much money they are losing and won't want to do it anymore." When I mentioned that the trainer KNEW he was giving us deal but wanted to help us; wanted to be a part of our journey, Markshane scoffed at the idea. Very unprofessional and made it seem like all he wanted was the sale. Dude needs a class or two about humility and especially needs to learn how to be more compassionate... we're people, not numbers or just another paycheck. What a disappointment ...even if they have been in business for 20 years... *eye roll* read more

Markshane is an awesome trainer. He really does a good job with getting your core into shape and he makes the workouts fit for you. He has an attitude of gratitude and it is really contagious. I met with Markshane about two months ago because I just did not feel like I was where I needed to be and I wanted to get back to my preferred weight. Immediately he was able to help me by explaining to me how I can reach my goals with simple changes in my diet and exercise. He made me feel completely comfortable about going to a personal trainer. You can tell just by the way he works with you and talks to you how much passion he has and how much he wants to see you reach your goals. I went twice a week, and I must say every day I was there was a challenge. In two months, I was able to reach my goals and am extremely happy with the results. I could not be more thankful for the help Markshane was able to provide me. read more

I can't believe it's taken me this long to write my review! It's truly the least I could do for this amazing place. I started personal training here for the first time ever 7 months ago, and it has honestly changed my life forever. I am the fittest I have ever been. I am more confident than I have ever been. And after years of on and off exercising where I could never find anything I loved, I now cannot WAIT for my sessions with Dupree on Tuesdays and Thursdays - our sessions are the highlight of my week! Markshane consistently makes me feel SO welcome and like an appreciated part of the Shape Up community, and Dupree is just an amazing trainer. He challenges me, listens to me, helps me grow and reach my goals... I just could go on and on. If you're nervous about trying personal training for the first time, take the leap and try Shape Up Studios. You won't regret it :) read more

My husband found Marc Shane Studio and was initially happy with his experience there. He also convinced me to go for a short while and it was ok but his location was half an hour away and getting the timing of the sessions down became a hassle after a while. He decided to stick it out a while longer but got injured during a session. He told his trainer he felt like the weights were too heavy but the trainer pushed him into it. He ended up tearing a muscle in his arm and it's been almost 3 months and he is still in pain. Even after Marc found out about it, his only concern was getting my husband back in for more workouts and did not care about the injury. When we asked for a refund for the sessions we had prepaid in advance for, he would not do it and kept trying to push us to come back. My husband still cannot work out and Marc just doesn't give a crap. His only response is to push us to come back in. He even offered to split the difference on how much he owed us, but nope. If I could rate him with no stars I would. All he cares about is making money. He has no concept of doing the right thing. read more
