Me and my friend go here regularly. I don't know why they don't have a good set of refuse because they're lo mein is by far the best lo mein I've had at restaurant in years probably ever. The two ladies that usually work the front are amazing. They're so helpful and so nice. The places is always slow so it's always quiet and beautifully set up. I really don't understand why they're not busier. People should be lined out the doors only thing that stinks. Is their soda machine doesn't work properly it's flat every time we get it so you have to order tea. we drive a half an hour to get there we choose that over many other restaurants we pass on the way there and it's worth it. Ordered General Tao's Chicken, 2 egg rolls and 2 soups. The chicken in the General Tao's was so overcooked I wound up throwing the entire dish away. The egg rolls were so greasy that we had to wipe our hands after handling them. The soups were okay, not great. read more

I have no idea why this place doesnt have a better review because IT IS SO DELICIOUS!!!! We ate here for the first time today - had the vegetable lo mein, kung pao chicken, and steamed vegetable plate with spicy garlic sauce - and OMGGGG it was so goooood. The sauces are super flavorful and the veggies are great quality and fresh. We also had fantastic service and the portion sizes are huge! Lots of good leftovers for the next few days. We had an excellent take out meal with a second night of leftovers! Their food is delicious, and our order was ready for pick up in 15 minutes! One word. Shanghai Chinese restaurant is "Delicious." We went there on a whim because we were in the plaza. Initially we thought it was one of those fast food Chinese restaurants where you walk in and there's a few tables and the booth where the register is, is right in front of you with photo options above it. No, no, no. This is a full-fledged, classy restaurant. We went and the service was exceptional. The food was beyond delicious. And the price is absolutely fair. BTW, they give you large portions so we took some home and got another two meals out of it. Talk about value. If you're driving around looking for a good Chinese restaurant, this is it. read more

What a complete and utter disaster. Normal Friday and placed order online at 615 for 45 minute delivery. Food rolled in at 745. All food was lukewarm at its peak. Got shrimp and scallops and we got 4 of each and about 800 water chestnuts. Got the Mongolian beef and it was 95% onions. Not green onions but the slimy kind. Had to dig through a pile of them to find each piece of beef. The 2 packs of dumplings were decent according to my kids but felt like they were cooked and ready about an hour before we got it. I've eaten at a lot of Chinese food places and this is - by a mile - the worst pile of slop I've ever been served at one. What a horrendous Friday night meal!!!! Even tried to get a rational explanation when i called in and the best i could get was a refund of 40%. It should have been free and then some!!!! read more

Very disappointed with this restaurant. Food took over 2 hours for delivery. When it arrived the Rangoon and sweet & sour chicken were both burnt and the food was cold. They never called to let us know about the delay. I called to check delivery time and asked change to pickup but said I couldn't as the driver had already left. Had high hopes for this restaurant after not returning for over several years but the food has not really improved and paying the bill yesterday saw a charge for using the credit card which was not indicated anywhere in the restaurant or told beforehand. I know being a small business and having to pay a fee for each credit charge can be costly but 1) bank charges 3% while the restaurant charges the customer at 6%, 2) should let the customer know instead of just tag the charges to the payment, and 3) work the charges into your price so it does not look so petty. Arrived at the restaurant at 6 pm. There were 3 tables with people but tons of people waiting for takeout (at least 5 cars parked at the curb). Unfortunately, we quickly found out why everyone was waiting for takeout. The service was very slow. We were seated for almost 15 minutes before we were asked what drinks we wanted. We ordered the drinks and meal at the same time since we waited so long and knew what we wanted. Found it comical that the menu says "reservation recommended". A table behind us was seated and they asked if we were getting service. We told them it took a while. Hot and sour soup had an amazing flavor but was not temperature hot. When it arrived she table. We both got the General Tso Twins (shrimp and chicken). We were both very happy with the flavor. The shrimp and large price of chicken were perfectly cooked and not dry. We both felt the portion size was big and there was plenty for both of us to take home. Fried rice was bland. Overall all nice place, typical Chinese decor. The shrimp was overcooked & everything was drowned in sauce, lacking any distinct flavor. We have tried several Chinese restaurant in the Richmond area since we moved to Midlothian, and this is by far the best!!! The soups were great, husband had egg drop and I had hot sour and our meal, twice cooked pork and Kung Poa were excellent as well. We did the lunch special ( which comes with egg roll and fried rice). I'm not a fan of egg rolls, prefer spring rolls, but the egg roll that came with the lunch special was yummy. This place only gets 2 stars because the server was nice but definitely inefficient. We arrived around 12:30 and we're seated immediately. We should have known there would be an issue after the look we received when we asked for a lunch menu. Obviously this is a mostly buffet lunch crowd. I looked at the buffet and the food seemed a little old and dry so I decided to pass. I was concerned when our server took our orders without writing anything down and i was right. I ordered the Thai Basil Fried rice with shrimp and when it arrived he said he took the meat off because it came with protein (duh I said shrimp). Oh I didn't get that.. also brown rice but when it came I know was white rice. One friend ordered chicken wings with a side of chicken fried rice. The wings came but he didn't hear the chicken fried rice so she ate the chicken while waiting on the rice. Well the chicken was red on the inside of the wing so she sent that back. He said the kitchen said it's hard to get dark meat all the way done. Huh a wing? No one should eat red raw chicken yuck. One friend ordered a pork with garlic I think that came with mushrooms that wasn't listed on the menu and she had to send that back. They did make her a fresh batch and apologized but what a close call. Not a good experience. I think I will stick with MIA across the street. read more

Flavors are both subtle and bold with finely prepared ingredients. Of special note is the lunch buffet. It's only $5.95 with a nice selection of very tasty dishes including delicious soups. I hope the food is better than the service - I have now had 3x servers. each time I ask a question the servers can't answer and go to ask someone else. Simple questions about the menu. It's a Saturday night and we are the only ones here. That should have been the first sign this isn't the place to go. Usually get food delivered and always missing something minor. Tonight, my online order was not seen by restaurant workers so had to wait additional 15/20 minutes to prepare. When I got home an entire entree with rice was missing. Thankfully, they delivered missing items. Still missing order of egg rolls, but I think we're done with Shanghai. read more

Very disappointed the last time I was there. This used to be really good. Needs major overhaul. Wallpaper falling off walls in dining area, ripped seats, carpet needs shampooing or changing. Recently ate here because I love their Kim Chi they serve. I ordered the Velvet Shrimp and Chicken I'm ginger sauce. I asked to add onions. My meal came out without onions because my meal comes premade. I thought they cooked the orders fresh. My meal had plenty of shrimp and chicken with veggies but the mushrooms were missing as was the flavor! You could not taste any ginger flavor at all. My husband's Pineapple Delight was no delight due to again lack of flavor. Only pineapple flavor you got was when you ate a piece of pineapple. The fried rice was good. I made the mistake of ordering lunch delivery from Shanghai yesterday. I called them after waiting 45 minutes and the lady informed me they didn't have a car to make deliveries. I told her I wanted a refund and all of a sudden she found a car. I then asked if the food was going to be cold and she informed me she would take care of it. After waiting 30 additional minutes I called back, I asked where the food was. She said she was bringing it to me now. I told her I did not want old food she said she was on her way. 30 minutes she showed up. The bag seemed hot so I went ahead and kept the food as I was pretty hungry at that point. The food was disgusting to say the least! It was soggy (over 2 hours old). I will never order from them again and I will make sure that everyone I know knows how bad my experience was! Hopefully they will go out of business so that we can get a new restaurant with owners who take pride in the food they serve and value their customers! read more

This used to be a very good restaurant. It is certainly NOT now. I went a few days ago and had the most vile meal. Egg drop soup tasted burned if that is even possible. Then I ordered the crispy duck. What I got was random chopped up parts of dark meat what I will assume was duck. It was dry almost burned and tasteless. We have been patrons of Shanghai for 30 years going way back when they had a location at Oxbridge. We order Chinese delivery normally about once a week. They have with out question dropped their standards. The orders are often incorrect and the dumplings are pitiful. They are like something you can get out of the frozen food section at the grocery store. EXTREMELY small and can't even tell their is pork in them. We might give them another try but if things don't get better we will take them off of our list. There are many others to choose from that we enjoy. read more

Shanghai has updated their menu several times over the last 12 months, but the most recent iteration is the best so far. Prices are a slightly more expense than I recall them being at this time in 2014. Nothing to worry about though. Cost is still appropriate for what you receive in quality. I feel like eating at Shanghai can be two different experiences, depending upon whether you order takeout or dine in. For takeout, my orders have always been exactly as I ask for them. Keep in mind, I order out from here frequently and have several, special dietary needs. As for eating on location, I feel as if the service is a mixed bag. Sometimes the wait staff are friendly, sometimes they exude nothing short of animus. Food is consistently good dining in and ordering takeout. I suppose that's all that matters. Go here if you're local and looking for some decent Chinese cuisine. It won't blow you away, but you won't be disappointed either. read more

Delivery was fast and the menu looked great but very disappointed in the taste. The egg rolls were very greasy and lacked taste. The chicken pad Thai was okay but I asked for spicy and there was none. The bang bang shrimp was very mayonnaiseie and lacked spicy. The general Tao didn't taste anything like regular general Tao. It was a runny sauce that looked for like a sauce that would be on hunan chicken. Not sure if they got the wrong sauce or if that's just how they make it. It supposed to be a dark sauce. The food is terrible. If you get delivery they give you the oldest seafood and it was gross! My shrimp tasted like fishy leather and there was sand in it and they poured about a cup of sugar in the brown sauce to cover up the old stinky shrimp. Yuck! My brother in law had scallops that were the same as my shrimp. It was terrible!!!! And the ginger sauce was so bland on another meal it almost tasted like water. This place used to be legit. Great food good service the whole nine yards. They were a little pricey so we started ordering from another spot that was cheaper. Food not as good but cheaper anyway so I guess you get what you pay for. Decided to go back to our old go to because we had some cash to blow and called. Ordering and delivery were fine for the most part and food arrived relatively quickly, especially for a Friday night. That's where good stops. The food was terrible. Asked for two dishes to be EXTRA SPICY. Got two dishes that were barely flavored. Daughters chicken was so over cooked I couldn't even stomach it. We called to complain and got the standard "we can give you something next time" line. Nope. There isn't going to be a next time. When we complained further the lady on the phone started getting hostile and told us if we wanted any money back we would have to bring the food back (even though it was delivered). Since we had some drinks we took it back this morning and had to literally fight with these people to get a refund. Like to the point employees are coming out the back to see what's going on. I guess their new ownership/management just doesn't give a....about the quality of the product they're putting out anymore. Too bad. They keep up like this and they won't last too long.
