Just moved back to the area and was excited to go to Shanghai Cottage for linch. We have not been there in over a year. We went in, was seated with menus. They were not crazy busy. It was about 12:20pm. We sat and waited, and waited. Another couple was seated next to us after about 10 minutes. Apparently they had been there before. Within a minute of being seated, not one but TWO servers took their drink order back to back. A third came to say hi and brought their drinks. Another came back and asked to take their order. The lady was embarrassed as she saw we had been completely ignored for going on 15 minutes now! She said "they were here well before us". To which the girl replied- "oh well I guess I went to the wrong table" then shrugged her shoulders and continued to take their order as two others came back to chat with them. Furious- we got up and left! What a sad excuse for a restaurant this has become. We will not be going back. read more

Love the sushi here! The staff were friendly and are knowledgeable of the menu. Our waitress was able to provide recommendations when we asked about the most popular rolls. The sushi was fresh and tasted great. We had no trouble being seated for dinner around 4 pm. The location is clean and there is plenty of parking available. Will definitely be back! read more

No complaints here! The space is small but still able to seat a good number of people. We came here for lunch on a recent trip to Fairhope and it was pretty busy but that didn't stop the efficiency of our super efficient server! They have a lot on the menu to choose from. I went with their sushi lunch special and it was really good. The miso soup was huge and delicious! If you are trying to eat healthy, the chicken and broccoli is the tastiest dish- the sauce was slightly sweet but not too much- perfect!!! Best Chinese in the area. The rolls are pretty solid as well. My favorite is the mushu chicken and Cali sushi nuggets. This is my go to.

5 stars for customer service because the young woman who helped me provided excellent service and communication. Unfortunately the food was terrible. I am vegan so we worked out that they would give me the braised vegetables with tofu but would use general Tso's sauce. Well, this was the most sickly-sweet, overly saucy Chinese I've ever had. It was so saucy that it leaked all over the bag and then I literally had to pour sauce out to drain some of the diabetes syrup. The sauce had none of the savoriness one might expect, no spice, no flavor other than sweet. It tasted more like a bad sweet and sour than anything else. I was pretty disappointed for $18. I kind of get the impression they're trying to do too much with Japanese, Chinese, and Thai items all on the menu. read more

We generally love Shanghai Cottage, but tonight was the exception. There was a younger Asian guy who was a waiter there. Upon being seated, we were two tables away and he was holding court with his peers. He was SO LOUD! Next, he was clanging plates and then purposely ran into a waitress, telling her to get out of his way. After that, he continued to speak loudly to his tall, mustached peer loudly across the restaurant. He truly wanted to be heard. After a long work day, I do not want to spend $100 to listen to a loud young man talk loudly incessantly. It was stressful and I felt anxious when we left. I asked our waitress if he ever stopped talking and she said, "no, never". Dinner is a time to relax and unwind. This young man clearly doesn't understand restaurant service etiquette and needs a lot of training. Hubby's blackened salmon was not blackened. It looked poached and was drowning in a sea of sauce. He didn't like it. My sushi was great and the fried rice was delicious. We didn't punish our server for the failure of her colleagues; we tipped 25%. I hope the owner sees this review and either trains this young man or let him go. It's pretty clear he annoys his colleagues as well. read more

Tonight we ate at @shanghaicottagefairhope 40 minutes away from home but we had to go to Sam's anyway so why not I decided to try something I've never had before and it did not disappoint. Pineapple shrimp fried rice. I didn't read the description all the way which made it more of a surprise when it came out in this awesome pineapple bowl with baked cheese on top! SO GOOD Justin had the pork lo mein the service was fantastic too! Lots of regulars there, I guess it was the neighborhood Chinese food restaurant. We will be back! read more

The food is incredible, my wife absolutely loves the sushi there. Sushi pizza! The baked sushi is amazing. I always get the flaming sizzling seafood platter. Wendi is the manager there, she is always there and very busy, such a hard worker. She is very sweet and manages her staff very well. I would highly recommend the service! Make sure you ask for Shawna or Jilian, they are very knowledgeable and as for servers I would give them 10 out of 5 stars. They both are very sweet and have worked there for a long time. Good Chinese food is hard to come by in this area, but we lucked up and found some of the best Chinese food we've ever tasted. After a bit of searching, we discovered that Shanghai is owned by the same guy who owns Master Joe's, so we figured it would be good, but we were still taken aback by how delicious it was! We started with the black pearl roll. For our entrees, I ordered the ginger chicken and my hubs ordered Mongolian beef. Both were phenomenal and the portions were huge. I ate about half of mine and brought the rest home to my son, who still couldn't finish the other half. The place is fairly small and the decor is modern and trendy. The prices were on par with any other Asian food in the area. The service was exceptional. From here on out, this will be our go-to for Chinese food. read more
