The Shanghai has the usual dishes we enjoy and offers new ones to try. We have eaten in and had it delivered. The menus have many options. The food tasted good and fresh. Each plate had its own, taste - The egg rolls were crisp on the outside and had a good filling. The sweet and sour pork had a crisp batter with a good flavor. We enjoyed several different items . The house rice was perhaps too mild. I asked the manager/ owner about her menu and how it was different from other Chinese restaurants. She offered that the food is based more on what is found in Shanghai. She commented the have spicier options we could ask about next time we came in. I really wanted to give them a better rating but the food missed the mark. It appears to be under new ownership and the portions are a lot smaller and the quality has gone down. This was our go-to for delicious and freshly prepared Chinese food but it's not the same anymore. The restaurant is located in a strip mall with plenty of free parking. The restaurant is clean but the one restroom could definitely use a deep, thorough cleaning. I ordered the #2 dinner combo $15.00, it consisted of --a cup of basic egg flower soup 3/5 --two deep fried wontons with sweet and sour sauce 4/5 --two deep fried shrimp (a bit greasy) 3/5 --one veggie egg roll (a bit greasy) 3/5 --chicken broccoli (very garlicky and flavorful) 5/5 --orange chicken (some of the pieces of chicken had a gamely flavor (yuck) and the chicken was not crispy; orange sauce coating the chicken was good 2/5 --chicken chow mein ( chicken and veggies were kinda nonexistent & it looked like they used spaghetti pasta rather than traditional chow mein noodles) 2/5 --pork fried rice was pretty good 5/5 Service was efficient and waitress was friendly. This place is booming... lots of patrons enjoying dinner inside. Service is fast; meals take approx 20 minutes for dine in or to go orders. They don't skimp on portions that's for sure, pile high . Portions are big enough to share or just be greedy and eat it all by yourself. If you order the dinner combos, they come with either fried rice or chow mein, or you can be like me and get half and half. The best of both worlds! I ordered a beef dish with peppers and onions, beef was tender, but there were a few extra chewy pieces inside. Gave my jaw a workout! My other family members ordered orange chicken and mandarin chicken. All were filling and satisfying. Loved the meals were still warm when we got home. This is the best Chinese food in Visalia and I have tried A-LOT! I recommend getting the orange chicken, pork fried rice and cream cheese wantons! Had a rough day and my husband said let's go out and grab dinner. He wanted to try this restaurant. And oh how happy I was not to cook. We walked in and were immediately seated. The waitress suggested some great dishes....honey shrimp, chicken chow mein, sesame chicken and veggies egg rolls. Every thing was Piping HOT. So be careful especially with kiddos. Restaurant ambience is good, service was good, although I didn't appreciate a couple that got there after my wife and I had arrived got their food before us. Food was ok, fried rice was decent but I had better, Kung Pao chicken was also ok and chicken chow mien also could have tasted better. Overall I would recommend this place but just keep in mind that in a town where there's not many options you might want to settle for it. I do not believe how many 5 star reviews have been left, because my one and only visit there was awful. I went during dinner time after 5pm so the staff seemed very stressed and overwhelmed by the busyness of the evening as there were only 2 girls working. Was never greeted, I asked if I could seat myself or if I had to wait to be seated and was told to have a seat by the entrance. Someone who arrived after me was attended to first. The won ton soup was awful no flavor and after adding soy sauce it was still awful. The orange chicken was not good either, the fried won tons and chicken fried rice was the only decent tasting thing I had. The Kung pow chicken tasted like it had been cooked in cleaning solution and wasn't spicy at all not even a little, (idk how else to explain the flavor). Never going back. Reason for my 5 stars. The Honey Walnut shrimp. Period. Don't get me wrong they have great food, haven't had something I do not like. But their honey walnut shrimp! Best around.. super light and crispy/crunchy and perfect sweetness and delicious sauce with the largest crunchy walnuts I've seen! We've been looking for a good Chinese restaurant since we arrived in Visalia 2 years ago and tonight we were craving some pork fried rice so we were on the hunt again. We initially were going to try Zen but they closed early so we found Shanghai still open. It was an hour before closing and it looked like it was a slow Sunday night. It was nice and clean. Our server was very attentive and got our drinks and orders promptly. Our food arrived nice and hot. The food was super delicious and we were very satisfied. The sweet and sour was nice and crunchy. Came here for the first time the other day for dinner because we've never been! Walked in and the lady working there in the front desk was on a phone call with a customer and didn't even acknowledge us walking in. The customer on the phone sounded like she was ordering food for a party so it literally took 10 minutes of our time. My daughter and I just sat there waiting for our order. The lady then had another call coming in so we waited ANOTHER 5 minutes without being acknowledged. When she got off the phone, we finally got our order (it was a phone order). We ordered one of their dinner combinations that came with orange chicken, fried wontons, egg roll, fried shrimp, chicken broccoli, chicken chow mein, and pork fried rice. I remember the total being $16+ as of 6/2024. Not bad ! We took the food home and everything was delicious. Orange chicken was juicy, fried wontons were fried to perfection, egg roll was yummy, fried shrimp was fried to perfection, chicken broccoli was yum, chow mein was delicious, and pork fried rice was yum! I went today to have dinner with some friends and family. I was very disappointed!!! I use to like it when the owner was Judy. Her husband was the cook and she was the waitress plus she had some help of course. But she sold it about a year ago. And the place is not the same. The food is very greasy and has no flavor but grease. It felt like a carnival. They have a spinning wheel for customers to get a discount so I'm assuming his clientele has gone down, so he needs something to bring them back in with a little prize. The table was greasy. We were around the area so we decided to try this place again. It was once one of our favorite Chinese food restaurants. I ordered a few favorites beef chow fun, Peking spareribs and Mapo tofu. Everything was delicious! I enjoyed the stir fried bean sprouts and white onions it made the whole dish tasty!! The Mapo tofu was delicious we had to get a couple of small bowls of rice to eat with the lobster sauce. The Peking spareribs was the best I've had in a while!! If you enjoy sweet and sour pork you'll love this it's just on another level! Lol The service was good a little bit crowded as we started eating. So it got a bit slow. The best Chinese food in town! Forget Panda Express! Spend the same amount of money on one of the lunch or dinner combinations here! They give you large portions so you can easily share one between two people and still be extremely full! They are quick for takeout and dine in! I always love whenever Judy is our server as she is always so nice and friendly! If you listen closely they are always playing relaxing and uplifting Christian music in the background and as a believer, I really appreciate it! They are super tucked away in the corner of the the save mart shopping area by El D so it's easy to miss but, once you've tried their food it's had to forget!
