When I lived in Leeds' studentsville known as Headingley in 2000 I thought it had everything a suburb could wish for. In fact I thought that independent businesses were on the way out...thankfully Shaky Jakes and its 200+ flavours has come along recently to prove me wrong. They can be seen out often in a cow costume with promo offers in the local area. The customer service is great and the staff are wonderfully friendly and helpful in this 1950's style old school milkshake bar. Making milkshakes out of popular chocolate bars like Milkybars, Aeron, Twix or KitKat. They use the products to make the milkshakes, so it isn't like the boring mars bar milk you find in pertol station refridgeorators. Cereal flavours are popular too with Frosties, Coco pops or even Weetabix available. Prefer your shake or smoothie to be fruity? Then try pineapple, banana or peach amongst others. Cakes and desserts are on the menu too. I would reccommend coming here for dessert. Skip dessert elsewhere and get a dessert flavour shake like apple pie, chocolate brownie or carrot cake? Biscuits like jaffa cakes or custard creams are part of the 200+ flavours too. This place is quite literally awesome delicious milk-shaky heaven. Fact. I first came here with my Dad to show him around Headingley, and this lovely retro diner style milk shake bar had just opened. We went in and stood dumbfounded for a while - I don't think the staff quite cottoned on to the fact that they had the two most indecisive people on the continent in their store! So, the menu board. Ok, you've got to prepare yourself if you've any hint of indecision in your bones. It's like option over-kill. They. Do. ANY. Flavour. Srsly - anything! I actually have to actively avoid this place because if I didn't I'd be in there every day guzzling a different flavour of delicious milkshake every time and putting on approximately fifty stone. As others have said, if you can think of a flavour/chocolate bar/sweet/cereal/drink then they probably do it in milkshake form. And it's proper milkshake too, they chuck the chocolate bar or whatever of your choice in a blender with some ice-cream and milk, none of this artificial flavouring rubbish. SO GOOD. The decor's cool too, 50s diner-style with some seats and lots of cool flyers to look at while they make your shake. The only criticisms I could possibly dredge up are that it's a little pricey (but worth it really), and the staff are a bit indifferent which detracts from the atmosphere. Popped in for a refreshing Milkshakes on Sunday to help me through the scorcheroo weather! Was quite surprised to see them open on a Sunday but will bank this knowledge for future reference! The choice always blows me away, I take ages to make up my mind and always think afterwards that I should have tried a different flavour! I've never been disappointed with my selection though and this visit did not let me down either Cadbury creme egg bar milkshake! Delish! Just the right side of thickness and coldness to refresh without giving me brain freeze!! The Mr had Hershey's in his and although nice- was too grainy for me. The menu is awesome here and every candy lovers paradise. I didn't notice Hot Dogs and Waffles on my last visit so not sure if they are new but definitely would try them if the yummy milkshakes are anything to go by. Shaky Jakes is a brilliant idea. However much you try to deny it, without touching on any matter to do with obesity, or healthy eating, they haven't missed a trick. An American diner style milkshake bar, complete with the staff dressed in pretty awful pink uniforms, they have a display of just about every chocolate bar, sweet, biscuit, item of miscellaneous confectionary you can imagine. You choose the item you want, and they do the rest. With their uber-blenders, they blitz up whatever you fancy into a milkshake version of whatever it is you chose. You can add jelly tots, and other syrup toppings, and can even just opt for a real fruit milkshake instead, though I doubt it'll be any more healthy! This is fast becoming my fave hang out. Shakey Jakes is a 50's style milkshake bar. They sell just about any flavour of milkshake you can imagine. Staff told my there most popular milkshake is Oreo which I had to sample. A regular shake is £2.60 large is £3.10. My personal favorite is ferrero rocher it is simple divine and tastes heavenly. All milkshakes are listed on a chalk board behind the till. It took my a while on my first visit to take in all the flavours and I had mint areo and it was lovely. Okay four stars is harsh, but they lose one for helping me put on weight and not being able to go a day without thinking about a milkshake from here. It's such a cool idea and before I moved to Leeds I hadn't even heard of such a concept. As mentioned about a billion times, you choose a chocolate bar, or sweet, my friend had strawberry laces in hers, Yuk and they do all the rest, add milk and ice cream. I tend to go for a normal chocolate bar like Galaxy for a nice smooth chocolate milkshake. For a milkshake I guess it's pretty pricey, but it doesn't even come into mind, as they are so damn good. Another feature which is great about them, if you're a super lazy student with a houseful of thirsty friends, so long as you order over 6 milkshakes they will deliver to you! How much better can it get? This shop is perfectly located in Headingly and is near all the shops and cafes that students frequent. Whole lot of shaking going on in Headingley As children, most of us were enthralled with the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, we watched in wonder as a rainbow of candy filled our screens and we salivated at the mouth-watering scenes in Willy Wonkers world of treats and delights. Can you imagine if Willy Wonker made milkshakes? He would've invented such extraordinary flavours such as Blueberry muffin and Toffee popcorn flavour or Strawberry Cheesecake with Custard Cream flavour. How crazy would that be? Well according to Shaky Jakes in Headingley, Leeds, it's actually not that crazy at all, and the masses of customer's young and old who step inside their world of whipped ice cream and confectionary couldn't agree more. With its pink decor and black and white tiling Shaky Jakes is not hard to miss. The vibrant environment provides a refreshing change from the dark, subdued concepts of the 21st century cafes. Its 1950's dinner style backdrop looks like it has been lifted from the set of Grease all that's missing is a juke box and a 70 year old waitress. The establishment is owned by Katie Duxbury and Patrick Windle, who came up with the idea whilst traveling around Bali (the sun can do funny things to the brain). The couple opened the shop in May 2008 and it has already become a firm favourite with the student residents in and around Headingley, so much so that Leeds Metropolitan University asked them to cater for their graduation days in July. They've even received a celebrity endorsement from the Kaiser Chiefs who mentioned Shaky Jakes on Chris Moyles show on Radio One. I decided I had no choice but to go and test this crazy concept of mix and match milkshakes - all in the name of serious investigative journalism. I can assure you that at all times I remained impartial and professional and did not dribble or behave in a childlike manner when approaching the counter to order my special shake. The decision on which combination to decide on was not an easy task as there are over 200 flavours to choose from. The menu reads like a what's what of the confectionary and cake world, including Mint Aero, drumsticks and Jammie Dodgers, there's even Special K Bars for the health conscious! Some flavours I have to admit were not as appealing as others. I couldn't quite get my head around the idea of blending in Black Jacks, Licorice Allsorts or extra strong mints to our milkshakes, but the idea of mixing chocolate, ice cream and my favourite cakes and sweets together soon distracted me from the stranger ingredients on offer. What's nice to notice is that they also make non-dairy milkshakes and fresh fruit smoothies, so there are alternatives for those of you who might want a little indulgence but can't quite stretch to the ultimate guilt of a fully loaded shake. After about 10 minutes of mute deliberation and mental anguish I finally came upon my decision. If you are on a diet should look away now as I reveal the contents of my quirky but absolutely scrumptious milkshake - Galaxy Caramel, marshmallow and Jam Doughnut (with extra strawberry jam). Oh yes, it tasted as sinful as it sounds, but I enjoyed every last slurp of it. I was a teensy bit tempted to try another but I don't think my stomach would've appreciated it. Shaky Jakes is an amazing milkshake parlour where the world of sweet shop meets ice cream parlour with beautiful results. Pick a sweet, any sweet, or in fact a biscuit, or dessert, or even cereal, and they will blend it into a milkshake for you. I would recommend the Fry's Turkish Delight shake. An astounding array of flavours and very reasonably priced compared to other places. Cheaper than a big name coffee shopoh, and they stock and ordinary coffee too, just in case the milkshake doesn't do it for you. Amazing shakes, with more choices than you can read in 10 minutes! Unfortunately you get at least 20 minutes to read them as the staff are S O S L O W. Don't get me wrong, the product is great, and almost worth the wait, but theres never enough staff on, esp on Saturdays, and they can only do one shake at a time it seems. I got a large Reece's peanut butter cups shake and honestly it wasn't that chocolatey- we shared between two of us and were both disappointed. We also got a waffle that is freshly made on site- however it was really thin & small, pretty disappointing again to be honest. Plus their brownie topping is bought from Sainsburys and I just felt like I could have made something nicer at home! Maybe a smaller shake would have been a bit stronger tasting & avoiding the waffles next time.
