We discovered Shaka at the beginning of our 3 week vacation (about 2 weeks ago). Visited a couple times during the day with my 8 year old (who loved the chunky monkey sundae)- and we were treated very kindly by the nice ladies working there (one of whom said she is the mother of the owner who works there at night). We told them that we would send our older kids and their cousins (8 Kids total) back there for food/ ice cream at night. Unfortunately, the service in the evening by the man who works there is not nearly as friendly or adequate as during the day. When My niece ordered a hotdog, she said the man sarcastically looked at her and said" a hotdog for dinner? That's all?" I'm not sure why he was passing judgement on her for what she ordered since he was getting her business anyway - but she would have ordered more had they not been out of so many of the water ice flavors and they were cleaning the soft serve machines - so ice cream was not available either. It doesn't exactly make sense that the soft serve machines would be cleaned in the evening at around seven when people are stopping by for ice cream. Either way, my kids were not that much fazed, so they gave Shaka another chance a couple of nights ago. This time, my 13-year-old son ordered a milkshake. When the milkshake was given to him he noticed that there was an ant (yes...the insect) on the whipped cream on top of the milkshake. He pointed out to the man that there was an ant on the shake, and the man said to him, "Cape May is built on ant farms!" - and he did NOT replace the shake. Obviously After hearing that story, that was the final straw. Needless to say, we will not be giving Shaka our business anymore. It's sad, because my eight-year-old just asked if he could go up there for a hotdog and a chunky monkey. I sent him to the Sea View instead. I'm sorry to the ladies who work so hard during the day to build up a clientele, only to have the rude man (owner?!) disrespect kids at night. And seriously? Not replacing a milkshake that has an ant in it? That's just unacceptable. I am pretty sure that if an adult had been there to return the milkshake, the story would've ended differently. So much for trying to teach my kids to politely advocate for themselves.
Obviously we will not be returning to Shaka and we will warn Our fellow homeowners in Cape May to stay away. read more
