This visit really…read morehighlighted how far Brisbane's foodie scene has come in the last couple of years; you can now find gems such as Factory 51 in areas previously limited to a handful of fast food stores and a fish'n'chip shop on the corner. Instead of the cod and chips bundle, however, I was treated to a snapper fillet, creamy mash potato, charred kale and burnt sage butter. As an avid fisherman, I can safely say that the snapper was so fresh that it was probably helping find Nemo earlier that morning. When you have a piece of fish of that quality, all you need is a simple supporting cast and some TLC, and Factory 51 definitely ticked those boxes! Whilst I didn't indulge in dessert, the vegemite and creme anglaise ice cream was a hit with the birthday girl. We will definitely be back!

A few years back, I went to the restaurant that used to be where The Catbird Seat Bistro is now. It…read morewas an interesting night to say the least. Most of the menu was unavailable and the chef and waitress having a massive argument in the kitchen for everyone to see, before the waitress stormed off. Not surprisingly, the venue closed a few weeks later. Their loss is our gain as The Catbird Seat moved in. Just opposite the Aussie Nash and The Gabba, they are literally in the Catbird Seat.* It's a lovely little bistro with a simple fitout of warm wood, elegant Art Deco lighting and an open kitchen and not an argument to be seen. We were there for the month long World Safari Dinner offer of a shared classic French meal and a glass of wine for $30 per head. I told myself that I would be have been fine if the dish of the week turned out to be Cassoulet, but was secretly thrilled when we were told it was Duck a l'Orange with an accompanying French pinot. I know what you're thinking. 'Duck a l'Orange. How 1970s can you get?' I'm here to tell you that your thinking is wrong. This segmented duck in a simple orange glaze was at once both sweet and savoury and packed with umami. The meat was tender and the skin crisp. Perfect! Accompaniments of simple green beans, duck fat potatoes (someone had to do it) and a scattering of spiced pecans completed the meal. There was not a skerrick left. A whole duck should have been more than enough but of course, it wasn't. Rounding out the evening, we selected from the small ala carte menu a cheese plate with house pickles and Black Forrest crème brulee. The brulee was a surprise. Deep, dark chocolate with a crisp burnt sugar top and a thin layer of sour cherry sauce underneath, it was a very grown up dessert that suited sharing. There may have also been some Tawny but only one, you understand as it was a school night. But what a night! Between the subtle decor, discreet but attentive service, flavoursome meals and competitive pricing, I can certainly see why The Catbird Seat recently received a 'Hat' at the Good Food Awards. *'The catbird seat' is a phrase used to describe an enviable position or advantage

It has the look and feel of a cozy intimate french bistro which took me back to Rheims, France, where I could take my time & enjoy an amazing lunch. I was salivating looking through the menu as everything sounded gorgeous. "I could eat everything" I thought. Entrees start from $12 & mains from $28. I began with a long macchiato, so I could look through the menu a little longer. Coffee is from "Cup coffee", in Woolloongabba. It was the perfect tonic to give me a pick-me-up. The sound of pan roasted Blue Salmon $25 (the day's special) with warm salad of crisp potatoes, rocket, streaky bacon & horseradish dressing, was music to my belly, so went with it. Absolutely to die for! The fish was cooked to perfection, so much flavour on one plate, especially the horseradish dressing. Dessert being a separate stomach, I deserved a treat, & ordered the dark chocolate pudding with winter berries & mascarpone. Made to order taking 15 minutes to prepare, this bowl of chocolate pudding happiness, is made with love. On a cold winter's day, it was warm & decadently divine. The Catbird Seat Bistro is an impressive bistro. Lunch time specials change regularly. They support & buy local produce, & their fish fresh from the markets each morning. There's a great looking range of Australian & European wines, champagnes, as well as a selection of cheeses, & tempting cocktail list. They do breakfast on the weekends with all day breakfast on Sundays with fresh juices, loose leaf tea & Coffee. Chef & owner, James Guldberg is classically trained in French cuisine but because of his Norwegian background, he brings a Scandinavian twist to his modern Australian Cuisine. 'The Catbird seat Bistro' Is definitely a place worth visiting. Looking forward to breakfast, of warm crepes with banana caramel & crème fraiche. Open daily except Mondays.

Now there are many attributing factors when it comes to the condition known as "Fresher Spread"…read more Every fresher gets it. Fat, that is. It's a combination of greasy college food, excessive drinking and Mr Deno's Kebabs (inextricably linked to excessive drinking). You get in the cab after a night out and instead of giving your college address, you say in a drunken slur, "Take me to Mr Deno's at the Ville." And it's all downhill from there. But oh how satisfying those kebabs are when all you've got in your tum is a big churning mess of alcohol. To sink your teeth into a Mr Deno's before stumbling home to college and falling in bed would have to be one of the most satisfying experiences, not be missed out on by any St Lucian collegiate. The fresher spread is even worth it!

When returning to St Lucia (the student suburb) after a late night out there is only one place to go to soak up the alcohol and that is Mr Deno's. Many a student has reached that point in the night where there is nothing better than a greasy kebab. In fact, all I remember from my student nights here is the wonderful full feeling of this fine product as it hit my goon filled stomach and gave me the strength to walk the hundred metres home and into my bed. The kebabs really are amazing, such that there is even a facebook page dedicated to them (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mr-Denos-Kebab-Shop/77734942575?sk=info) where you are encouraged to post photos of yourself devouring Mr Deno's kebabs and just be a part of the general awesomeness that is this Kebab shop. Mr Deno's Kebab and Pizza's hours change depending on the student calendar (they close earlier when it is not semester). Now I recommend not even looking at Mr Deno's during daylight hours. The "best kebab of your life" during the night quite easily turns into a very average kebab during the day. Keep Mr Deno's for those late nights and you will stay a fan!

So when my 4th cousin (Aussie - Turkish) suggested Sultan's, stating that it was "the best Turkish food in the state" (maybe even country), we clearly had to check it out. We showed up on a weekend night, parking in an unassuming strip mall. The first thing that hits me is the aroma of roasting meat and the plume of smoke coming out of the chimney. Best of all, it smells like real meat, like in a legit kebap restaurant in Turkey. As soon as we head inside, we're greeted with quite the familiar site. Long tables of giant food platters, huge families talking loudly, the shop proprietor playing keyboard and singing, and lots of kids dancing in the middle of the restaurant. This is generally what our typical Turkish weddings look like, btw. We ordered a mixed platter of dips and bread to start, followed by a giant mixed grill, falafel platter, and my favourite, Iskender Kebap. Oh my lord, everything was ridiculously good, and most definitely authentic. Firstly, the eggplant was char-grilled, not roasted in a 400 degree oven; you can always tell the difference. The meat tasted like it was flown in from the motherland, the Pide bread was hot and fluffy, and even the yogurt was homemade. A couple of glasses of Raki, some great company, and some very authentic food left us stuffed and happy. We would definitely come back here again, now if only it wasn't located in the middle of nowhere...

Not many people are familiar with Nyonya food, but to give you an idea, it's a mix between chinese and malay and the techniques used to cook the food go back to ancient China. Let's not go into that. My family are from Malaysia and we are from chinese descent meaning only one thing. They are highly critical of authentic Malaysian and Singaporean food. They are also very critical of Nyonya food, and as word spreads far and wide in the asian community, thank goodness the reviews from this place were good when we ate there. The staff are very professional, the restaurant is decorated to represent a little eatery in olden China, I quite liked it, but my pram pretty much bumped into everything on the way to the table, so I kind of felt bad. They did the typical asian restaurant thing, fit as many tables and chairs into a small space as possible. Not sure what this means for the chi of the place. We ordered the 'Wat Dan Ho' a wet version of the 'Chow Kuey Teow' and a Salty Plum Spare Rib (me and my ribs gung ho it was!), the Nyonya Kapitan Curry Chicken and a plate that isn't on the menu. It is the typical dish chinese usually order to celebrate a huge birthday, a wedding or the first month of the life of your baby. So the c'est la important dish - it is a cold cuts dish with jellyfish, barbeque pork, cold boiled salted chicken and some other tidbits. I have to say I give all the dishes a 3.5/5 because they were all pretty consistent with what we were used to eating prior to coming here... none of them in particular stood out, but my family and I are pretty hard markers. I think Little Singapore still trumps Little Nyonya, but it's worth a try, the dishes to the non critical people would probably taste pretty damn yummy.
