We drove about 5 hours to get to Fort Caswell for the weekend and we were starving. This place looked good so we decided to give it a try. We did get seated quickly outside. I noticed there was a family beside us and they waited for ever to get their food! The dad was making up games to keep them occupied. We actually got our food before them and we got their after them. We honestly waited forever for ours too. I ordered a salad which was really good and my husband ordered a Louisiana crawfish flat bread. My husband's was not really warm at all and had hardly any crawfish or sausage on it but had a boat load of the creole seasoning. He loves that seasoning but THAT much. He couldn't even eat it all. It was so salty! Now our server was great and on top of serving us. Just 3 starts for waiting so long and the slowness of people getting food around us. One group even ordered and had to have it to go to make it to their engagement! And 3 starts because my husband's food. We were starving! read more

Had dinner her Saturday night with a large group but they were literally the only restaurant within a 30 mile radius that would put us on the waitlist without a reservation - so major bonus there and total lesson learned. We waited for about an hour, without any issue, and had some delicious mixed drinks made by the bar while waiting. Upon sitting, we went ahead and ordered the peel and eat shrimp and the fried tomatoes which were awesome. I wanted the crab leg boil but since we were one of the last tables to be seated for the night, they were sold out. We ordered a myriad of food including Cesar salad (which little to no dressing), the fried flounder, the shrimp and grits and the island bowl. Everyone liked their food & most finished their plates. We did order a side of plantains based off of a server recommendation and then they ran out of those as well - biggest complaint was here... instead of asking me what side I'd like as a replacement, she just brought slaw... which certainly wasn't my top choice of replacement, but nonetheless, the food was good, the atmosphere was a perfect beach location vibe, and we were most grateful they would feed such a large party without prior notice! read more

Great chicken dip appetizer. We arrived and it took several minutes to be acknowledged. Waiting 30 min for a table with poor bar service. Finally got seated. Waiter was rather lackadaisical and uncaring about helping us. More concerned about closing. As he brought dishes he expected us to pass them down the table before he reached as far as he could. Meh... would try somewhere different next time. Called early in the day to try to find out what time the wait usually starts... the person who answered said with a party of 7 we should have no problem being seated at 5:00. We arrived at 5:15 and were quoted an hour-long wait! We grew frustrated when a couple of parties, similar in size, walked right up and were sat during our wait... The timing was just kind of off in general. When our food was ready it came out in rounds, rather than all at once. Also, while you wait at the bar, you can NOT order apps (since it's a simple outdoor bar). The outdoor table seating is good though, it's shaded and there are fans running- so even on a hot afternoon it was comfortable. The tables are long picnic tables, so they do community seating. some highlights: Got good oysters, a friend at our table raved about the salmon salad, the seafood pasta is awesome (it was even delicious when heated up the next day), we've heard the coconut cake is good, and the kids meals are served on a frisbee (which they can keep- that's borderline genius). read more

The buffalo dip was AWESOME! My partner and I went here on vacation and were transported to another world! The ambiance is great at this place, it's an amazing location and I would highly recommend it if you're staying on Oak Island. Service was impeccable and I had a full drink through the whole meal! This place doesn't seem like much when you pull in. However, the friendly servers were quick to welcome us. We chose to sit inside at the bar. The stools are comfy. Derek was our server/bartender. I can't say enough good things about him. He was definitely working his booty off. All the staff definitely earn their pay. I was impressed that they helped each other and seemed happy. Now, for the food. My husband and I both had burgers. He chose the Rajin Cajun, which he loved. The BBQ bacon cheddar burger (I added a fried egg) is delicious. Our visit was today August the 25th and most of the lodging units are empty so I'm unsure why no takeout is available. Amazing food, atmosphere, and drinks! My husband and I have visited here before during the off-season and decided to come back tonight after every other restaurant we visited had a 1+ hour wait. We enjoyed some frozen drinks from the outside bar and sat on the patio until we were seated which only took about 20 minutes for our group of 3. We've visited OKI numerous times over the years and have been looking for a great seafood spot. We've tried all the "popular" ones in Southport, but we're disappointed each time. We decided to give Shagger Jacks and we're thoroughly impressed. The kids menu was pretty standard, but they serve the food on frisbees which immediately one the kiddos over. I enjoyed the special, which was grilled redfish over cilantro rice and topped with mango salsa... can I say it was insanely good?!!? It was! My wife had the shrimp bowl with fried plantains, which she also enjoyed. We will definitely be back... maybe even one more time before our vacation is over! :) I would recommend this to anyone visiting town. read more

Our experience was horrible. What was supposed to be a family night out with fresh fried food turned into a nightmare. The kitchen ran out of most items on the menu. The owner refused to talk to us after our waitress addressed our concerns. Then, the owner told the waitress to "just get us out of here" because of his recklessness and disrespect. As a frequent visitor of OKI I'm always looking for a new go to lunch/dinner spot. We have passed Shagger Jacks so many times and have never gone there! The environment is really nice. There is a huge outdoor patio with family style seating. Inside has a nice bar and TVs to watch the games. (GO PANTHERS) We went on Sunday around 11:45. There was a nice crowd but we were seated immediately at the bar. By the way the bar chairs are super comfy which is an added bonus. The brunch menu was being served. I wanted something semi healthy after lots over over indulging at Thanksgiving. I ordered the goat cheese chicken sandwich with no bun substituted the fries for a salad. The side salad was huge and worth the extra $1.75. The grilled chicken goat cheese style was delicious!!!!! It had bacon and some kind of delicious sauce that I wanted to kick off the plate. So today A friend invites me and a fellow buddy to have lunch and he selects shagger Jack's as a place we should eat. I have eaten there before and I've always gotten good service so I agreed it was close to go there We entered and we're directed to a table and chose outside seating. Immediately after being seated a waitress comes out to inform us that we're going to need a mask. We had covered our face with our shirt sleeves because we had forgotten our mask in our vehicles and had come with a friend and did not have one. She did informed us that we would need to purchase one of these paper mask for $2 She left and returned with one mask held it up in the air and dropped it on the table in front of me. I informed her that I would not wear a mask that had been contaminated by the table. She informed me that she had just cleaned the tables I ask her why she dropped it and she said she held it there for me to take, not really certain why she was holding it there. Shortly there after a gentleman came to the table who I believe was the dishwasher to re-inform us that we needed a mask, wasn't sure because no one else is wearing a mask and we were already seated. Then another waitress came out and with a very smart attitude ask about service. My friends ordered I informed her that I simply had just lost my appetite as a result of the service or lack there of. My friends had their lunch and I chose not to. I left the masks on the table and covered my mouth with my sleeve as I had done when I came in. I was not charged the two dollars that she told me I would have to pay in order to purchase the cheap mask. I get it, masks are something that are needed to protect everyone. Unfortunately, I had left with a friend as I did with a fellow associate and we forgot our mask and did not have one. Funny how an establishment empowers people to put their control in front of customer service. In my business we give away cheap ass mask in order to keep people happy. We understand that these mask are necessary but never jeopardize customer service for issues like this. I guess this is what happens when you can't find good labor at Oak Island. What do you think will happen to this establishment when it becomes necessary to pay an inconsiderate uninformed staff $15 an hour to provide this same level of customer non-service As for now I will not return nor will I recommend any of my friends or others go to shag or Jack's. Their food is great no doubt, but the lack of customer oriented wait staff does not make up for the quality that one deserves when you pay good money. read more

Great burgers and brunch drinks specials! We were famished and the burgers were hearty two hand sandwiches so that may have influenced my review. Also the bloody mary brunch special was a huge glass with a skewer of two shrimp, clams and celery in the drink!! Loved the flavor and the snack! The bbq bacon burger was a huge patty with bacon and sauce. I liked the fries too, though they were the skinny ones. The hubby had the spicy goat burger, which he said was just spicy enough and liked the beer list too. We ate on Sunday and had been to several other spots that were closed so that makes this restaurant a good choice for beach visiting Sunday lunches.
