I had visited many different other diamond stores but I could tell the sales people were usually trying to take advantage of me. But Meagan was very helpful and honest... no pressure sales tactics or smoke and mirrors. Don't go to this place for repairs. Asked for a ring to be resized with explicit request that the inscriptions not be affected. It returned damaged and we were accused that it was caused by us when it was reported to them. They couldn't provide proof of any before & after notes of the quality of their work or condition of the ring, except stating that some lady checks the jewelry before leaving the store. Keith and Danny Shaftel are very professional, but the other associates who work there are also knowledgeable in their own right. The fine young woman that has worked with my wife and I multiple times is also a Graduate Gemologist. The selection and pricing at Shaftel is bar-none. They are able to get their jewelry it at wholesale prices, and that discount is passed on to the customer. Moreover, the unique selection they have, combined with the high quality, makes this place a must-stop over any of the crappy mall jewelry store places that you may find. I remember going into a Zale's one time when first going engagement ring shopping and having a salesperson (who is working on commission) try and explain to us how a cloudy diamond gives it character. It would have been longer, but we had to end the appointment. She was very knowledgable, positive and patient. My fiancé and I knew nothing about diamonds or precious stones and she carefully explained everything to us and gave me plenty of time to sit and stare at stones until I picked the one I wanted. She was also very respectful of our budget and helped us get the best we could within our budget. We were aiming for $5,000, but willing to go over for something perfect, but she made me exactly what I wanted for $5,000 on the dot. She also helped me pick a stone on the large end of the 75 point range to avoid doubling the price of the stone to get a full karat. We were really impressed that we weren't encouraged to go with a larger stone even though we were open to being flexible with our budget. We bought my husband's wedding band here and were very happy with the service as well as the quality of the product we received. It was a bit strange finding the place (it's in an office building) but their showroom was nice enough. We had been shopping around at all the chains in the mall (easiest way to hit up the most at once) and were just not impressed with the quality of the rings for the price. They all seemed light and since you're essentially buying gold... Anyway, when we came to Shaftel, we were shown a nice selection of rings and found one that we immediately liked, but in tungsten carbide. "No problem," they say, "we can make it in white gold for you in a few days." And, to boot, if we ever have problems with the ring, all we have to do it bring it back and they will refinish it and make it like new. "It's got our name on it, after all." And last plus: great prices for the quality. I felt like I was working with honest people and compared to other stores we went to, this was the nicest experience. Let me begin by saying that I have been a loyal Shaftel customer for many years, and I have referred many customers to them. In fact the last person I sent to Shaftel ended up spending upwards from 10k there. So you have no idea how sad & disappointed I am in writing this review. I really used to think they were an honest family-run business, but dealing with Keith Shaftel this past weekend has changed my mind about them completely. Background: About 2 years ago, I took an old ring to Shaftel and asked Keith how much he would buy it for because I wasn't sure if I wanted to sell it or have it redesigned to a pair of earrings. He offered me a price and I said that I will come back in a couple of days after I make up my mind about what I wanted to do with it. Life got busy and I completely forgot about it. ______________________________________ Last week, I found that old ring and took it back to Shaftel. Keith was at a meeting, and so his daughter offered to look at the jewelry to see if it is something they would be interested in buying. So I show it to her: Daughter: Yeah, it is a good quality gem and my father would be definitely interested in buying it. Me: Yeah, I know.. He was interested in it 2 years ago. Daughter: Diamond & gold prices have gone up a lot in the last 2 years and so you should be getting more for it today. It will be just a few more minutes before he gets done with the meeting. So another 20 mins go by and I go around the store pointing what I want for my "surprise birthday present" to my husband.. Another gal working there comes up asks if we have been helped. Me: Yeah, I am just waiting for Mr. Shaftel because I have ring that I want to sell. Salesgirl: Yeah, you need to talk to him, but let me take a look at it first to make sure that the quality of the stone meets our standards. Me: here it is.. Salesgirl: Yeah, this is a good quality stone. Just wait for a few more minutes. ______________________________________________ Another 30 mins go by and Keith walks out of the meeting and here is how our 30 second conversation went. Keith: How can I help you? Me: I am interested in a selling this ring: Keith: I will give you $450 for it (WTF!!! That is way way less than what he said that it was worth 2 years ago. Infact that is even less than what a pawn shop would offer me. The ring was set in 22k gold, so the setting alone was worth a lot more than that.. and not to forget the diamond on it) Me: I know it is worth a lot more than that, In fact $___ is what you offered me 2 years ago. Keith: It can't be true. (bold faced lie) Me: Yes you did!! Keith: Oh in that case you should have taken the offer then.. things change you know. At this point my husband and I look at each other in disbelief and just walked out. I suppose he thought that I was down on my luck in this shitty economy and was desperate for some cash. Unfortunately for him I was just looking to get rid of the ring to buy more jewelery from him. I love shopping in family run businesses, but I would never patronize a store that follows predatory business practices. My advice: If this is your first time buying or selling jewelry, then do tons of research, shop around a lot, and take someone who knows a thing or two about bargaining before you go to Shaftel. So now that she said yes and we're officially engaged, I can actually write a review for Shaftel Diamonds. There were not a whole lot of places with many Yelp reviews but this was one of the few places that had some legit reviews. As noted the location is a bit weird, Shaftel Diamonds is in this big building down on Richmond with no signs or identifiers. I actually didn't have an issue with crowds although I always went there during weekdays. Before I started shopping around I tried to educate myself on the basics of diamonds (the four Cs: clarity, cut, color, carat). However, a lot of what makes the diamond special/unique can't be measured by specific criteria and it is more of a gut reaction. Danny Shaftel was the person who helped me out during my search. The great thing about Danny is that he wasn't necessarily trying to sell me on a diamond because it had certain criteria nor was he trying to push a sale on me, unlike the first couple of places I visited. He would always show me the diamond first and have me judge it without any bias associated with the color/clarity/cut rating. Surprisingly there were plenty of diamonds that on paper didn't sound like winners but they looked great. Danny was extremely patient with me and after 4 visits I finally was able to pick a diamond that looked amazing and was within my budget. I also picked a setting from the selection they had at the store, but they can work with you to design a custom setting. I was able to get 12 months of interest-free financing through GE Money. My experience with Shaftel Diamonds was just great. My now-fiancee is *very* happy with the end result. I totally recommend Shaftel if you're in the market for some bling. read more

The management of this new location was kind enough to offer to host a wine tasting event for an alumni organization with which I'm involved. The store is located in the Rice Village shopping area with a pretty visible corner location. Like most other shops in the area, there are a limited number of parking spaces in front and then it's street parking or the lot across the street. The owner told me they do a lot of custom pieces and from what I saw, they offer lovely jewelry and great, personal service. Nice interior (brand new store) feels upscale as a jewelry store should. We started off here on a friends recommendation and at the beginning we thought this was an amazing store with great customer service. They helped us design necklaces for our flower girls in our wedding and even added diamonds to the wedding band we bought with them to help achieve the look I wanted. We had the wedding band sized the day of purchase and we thought everything was smooth sailing. We received the ring a few weeks before the wedding and it was tight but I could manage. After the wedding we took it back in and had it resized since it was too tight and they recommended adding speed bumps so that it wouldn't turn while wearing it. We received the ring back approximately 1 week later and they had only added speed bumps and not increased the size, thus making the ring smaller. I took it back in and told the sales lady this and she apologized after verifying the ring had in fact not been resized as requested and as paid for, mind you this is their ring we bought from them and was sized incorrectly originally. My husband then picked up the ring 2 weeks later and it was now a size 6 or larger. It could now fit on my thumb. We took it back and a sales lady sized the ring and said it was in fact now too large and not a 5.5 with speed bumps as requested. She was extremely apologetic and said they would immediately fix the problem. Then we received an email, stating they wanted to replace the whole bottom shank and charge us $170 for the gold... which after my husband spoke with them and explained what was going on they said they would take care of it. Which brings me to today...my husband picked it up and I placed it on my finger and it's now even smaller than it was the day of my wedding and barely fits on my small finger. This may be an isolated incident, they were very nice people and I loved their jewelry but we will be taking the ring to another jeweler to pay them to properly resize the ring. read more
