I had such an incredible time at Crafted Rings! I love the idea of being able to create my own…read morering, and Cole took me step-by-step through the process and helped me to do as much as I could on my own. Now I have not only a cool new ring but something I can say I crafted myself! After selecting a design, the first step of the process was hand carving the ring out of wax - making the ring big enough for my finger and shaping the pattern on the outside. All the necessary tools were provided and were easy to use, especially with Cole's tips and expertise. (As someone with very limited experience with creating anything by hand, I very much appreciated this!) This step had the most amount of time allocated to it, and does require a degree of delicateness with the wax and patience with the process and with yourself. Luckily, Cole was also able to help undo or cover up mistakes (or weld the ring back together when the wax snapped - which definitely didn't happen five or six times ) Next, we used the wax ring to create a sand mold into which the silver for the ring could be poured. This doesn't take long, but prepping the mold also requires some delicate work. Again, Cole was there to help with corrections and mistakes. Since I was there by myself, I may have had a chance to be a bit more involved in preparing the silver for pouring into the mold than a group may have been able to. After the mold was ready, we used a torch to melt the silver and Cole poured the silver into the mold in one smooth, expert motion. The ring formed and cooled quickly, so within a minute or so we were putting the finishing touches on the final product. Finally, after some "pruning," sanding, and polishing, I have an awesome ring I can truly call my own! If you've ever wanted to craft something yourself worthy of being an heirloom that you could truly cal your own, or if you're looking for a meaningful gift of jewelry that isn't marked up to ridiculous prices just to take advantage of you, (OR if you just want to experience imagining yourself forging your own Ring Of Power in the fires of Mount Doom) I can absolutely recommend Crafted Rings!

From the moment you walk in the door, being greeted by Cole and Kayla, you know you are in for a treat. You round the corner into the workshop, with its magical blend of unique vintage decor, industrial work bench, and wax blanks on a marble square, and you know this will be something special. Creating unique handmade rings was a process like no other. With Cole and Kayla's encouragement and guidance, our experience was memorable and so much fun! We carved our rings out of Wax and when we needed assistance, Cole and Kayla were there to help. This was such a memorable experience for my daughter and I to share, and I highly recommend it to anyone who finds themselves in the Salt Lake City area! So much fun! The product is awesome, but the process was even better!

Birthday party was so much fun, the art teacher was so sweet and did amazing with our guest's variable age group (4-8). Friendly staff, cozy cute place for creating art, AND if you haven't already tried the Gelato..... well then you must! It's so delicious and flavors are always variable so keep an eye out because they may not be the same flavors when you come back! Even if you dont do art, at least try the gelato, you wont regret it!

I found The Art Cottage and learned that they do watercolor classes-and figured I'd give it a try. You do need to call or go online to reserve your spot-space is limited. I called and was able to get in easily for the day and time that worked for my schedule. I showed up a few minutes early and was setup at my station with paint, paper & brushes. I was ready to go! The class was brief-I learned a few basic strokes and techniques in watercolor. Gradient painting where you start very light and work your way into the darkest version of a color. I also learned the "wet on wet" and "wet on dry" techniques and when it would be appropriate to use each. I also learned how to fix mistakes and turn them into more intentional pieces of the art. I really channeled my inner Bob Ross turning things into birds and clouds. After the instruction, I was set loose to do a painting. There were some binders full of examples to provide inspiration, but no step by step instruction, which is different from other canvass/acrylic painting classes I've done elsewhere. I applied the techniques I had learned in the lesson and some suggestions from the instructor. Although my painting might not be one worthy of hanging in a gallery, I enjoyed myself and would recommend taking a class to anyone who might be mildly interested in watercolor.

She was intimidated the whole time, worried she would do the wrong thing and he would yell at her. He's working with hot glass, so maybe he just doesn't know how to get what he wants from people without yelling. But definitely not kid friendly. But here's the worst part... they don't sterilize their mouth piece between asking different people to blow to inflate the glass. My daughter was given the end of a hose and told to blow in it. She did. I asked if they sterilize it and a woman who worked there told me they use isopropyl alcohol to sterilize. Ok. I'm a virologist so I can appreciate that if they soak the mouthpieces in alcohol between sessions, it's sterile enough. But then when it was my son's turn, the man dipped the end of the hose in a glass of alcohol for about 2 seconds, shook it off, and handed it to my son. That's not long enough to sterilize. This is how norovirus (resistant to a little alcohol) and other hardy viruses would be spread. They should be letting it sit in the alcohol for at least 30 seconds. A quick search on the internet would show you how inadequate a 2 second dip is at killing some pathogens. My daughter was grossed out (we all were). When I brought this up with the guy, he brushed me off by saying "it's alcohol" and walked away and then tried to continue the agenda as if he just needed to get through it regardless of how his clients are experiencing what was happening. It's like he can't read people or doesn't care. The owner wasn't there. I hope the owners see this and take this feedback seriously. The guy they have doing glass blowing classes now is probably good at glass blowing, but he's not suited for front-of-the-house service and is terrible with kids (judging by how he treated mine). And the sanitation protocols really need to be improved. Get several mouthpieces and soak them in alcohol in rotation so each really is sterile for each new person. (Adding this after seeing owner reply: Unfortunately, as you see from their reply, they don't take feedback well. They insist they sanitize but the guy dipped in alcohol for 2 seconds between users. That's not long enough to sanitize. That's the key problem. As for us being rude and insisting we make whatever we want, we had 5 adults and two kids and said that since our two kids wouldn't have the energy to sit though everyone getting to make a glass piece (supposedly 20 minutes each), we would be happy to make just two pieces. We selected them from the options we were shown. We were told the larger vase would cost extra and we said that would be fine. So we paid for a long session and trimmed it down. That would normally make a business happy. We have no skills in making glass pieces and obviously can't make whatever we wanted, so suggestion we told staff we would make what we wanted just doesn't make sense. As for other guests confirming I was rude, they weren't there from the start; they came into the store after we started making the pieces and therefore only witnessed my bringing up sanitation issue and being brushed off. As for the guys being nice, I think that's up the kids to judge... and they both felt intimidated by him. So maybe he didn't like us and showed it, but it's not cool to take one's frustrations out on kids. That's what I mean by him not being cut out for service. Meanwhile, the one and only thing that they really really change for public health reason is their sanitation protocol. They are spreading pathogens. If you do this and see them continuing to dip the mouthpiece in alcohol for 2 seconds, just don't do the blowing. Let the guy blow himself.)
