This is such a cute shop with lots of fabric, yarn, & supplies for sewing, crocheting and knitting. They also offer classes. My first and second visits were for Knitting 101. Caitlin was fabulous & very patient, She emailed me before the first class to ask preferences, and she had my supplies all ready for me. There was one other person who signed up but she didn't show, so I had Caitlin's individual attention. I have tried to learn a few times in the past, but always had difficulty (even with youtube vids). This time, I feel like I finally got it. I look forward to Knitting 201. read more

This is a super cute space - bright and airy and full of great colors. I appreciate that they also carry some really nice yarns for non-sewists like me, but the fabric selection is definitely the star of the show. They also carry a lot of cute notions, including needle cases and fancy scissors (although they were out of unicorn thread scissors, which was very sad). I didn't talk to the staff much since I was just killing time before something else, but they were super friendly and cheerful, and I hear nothing but good things about them from people who come to the shop more often. read more

We found Sew to Speak during the Holiday Open House. The bright, cheery store drew our attention, and we popped in to check it out. The friendly employee asked if we were there to make an ornament, which they were offering during the open house, and we eagerly accepted. The ornament was a very cute kid-friendly mouse ornament, which allowed kids of various ages to get involved in making it and selecting a variety of different colors and parts to put together the project. It was a big hit with our kid. While he was working on it, I got the opportunity to take a look around and marvel at the wonder of the variety of fabrics and yarns that fill the space. I love how there's a neat little loft section with a fun light-up sign of the name too. It just has a lot of character. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful, and the folks working the ornament making were great with the kids. I'd love to visit again. read more

This is another good fabric that I found on my visit to the Columbus area. Some beautiful fabric, reasonable prices, some higher/some lower prices than I have seen in other stores (Detroit and Columbus). I purchased some beautiful double gauze in a grey color that I had not seen before. I hope to come back here on my next visit. read more

I have found several fabrics here that I used to upholster the seats of dining chairs and I have purchased scraps which I framed and hung up in my apartment. Every fabric here is unique and beautiful. The website is awesome too because you can see almost all of the fabrics ahead of time. I had no trouble finding those that I had picked out online, in the actual store. This place makes me want to skip my car payment and run out immediately to buy a sewing machine. I have had a sewing machine now for over 2 years. I tried to do a few projects on my own. As a total beginner trying to self teach, everything I had made and spend so much time on ended up falling apart. So I took an intro to sewing class here last Sunday. Ah-Maz-Ing!!! I learned SO much. The instructor (Michelle) was so patient and great at what she does. We ended up actually making a really cute wallet by the end f the 2 hours. I enjoyed the class so much, I cannot wait untill this Sunday night where I will be back to make a skirt in a second beginner class with Emily. The classes seem morn modern and are cheaper then ones I saw at JoAnne Fabrics. The shop is adorable. I could barely even focus on my class because there was sooo much visiual stimulation at sew to seak. The walls are covered with great projects that you can make in the classes there. The fabrics are BEYOND the coolest I have ever seen, and are really affordable. They have very unique, modern, and ethic prints you will not find in the chain fabric shops in Columbo, I cannot wait to get started on some of my very own prjects and peruse their fantastic fabrics for the perfect selection! Note- camparing prices of sewing "notions" in class (buttons, clasps, needles, ect.) Joanne's seems a little better on price for this type of thing. But they have NOTHING on this shop's fabrics! read more

I love Sew to Speak! As far as I know, it is the only place where you can locally purchase Alexander Henry fabrics. And they have an expanded (read "more aesthetically pleasing") selection of other fabric designers like Robert Kaufman, Michael Miller, and Anna Maria Horner than big box fabric retailers--including awesome decor weight fabrics by contemporary designers. Being a gigantic cheap ass, any time I can save on shipping costs while supporting a local business--I definitely will. I have heard a few people complain about the price...but these fabrics are being sold at the MSRP and are QUALITY...so if you want cheap fabric, you know where to go. They also carry Japanese imports that are so cute, it's almost disturbing. And, for the love of all things holy, I even found a panel of the Virgin Mary there once. Score. read more

I took a sewing class here and it was a great experience. I had just purchased a sewing machine and felt overwhelmed with the instruction manual and Youtube videos I had searched so I signed up for the Intro to Machine Sewing course with Michelle Thomas. Michelle was pretty awesome. She was patient but firm. She was funny and nice to work with. In this class, you make a little wallet/clutch that is yours to keep at the completion of class. Michelle emailed all attendees before the class and informed us of the materials we would need. The email detailed where we might get those items and, in some cases, what part of the store we would find them-- very detailed for the complete novice. STS provides sewing machines if you do not have one but bringing your own means that you get personalized instruction on how to use YOUR machine, which was REALLY nice. While I did not purchase the course items from STS (I purchased at Joanns), I sort of regretted not doing so. Everything was so cute there. Very, very adorable fabrics!! Oh well, maybe for the next class. There were only a few parking spots in front of the building so you may have to street park; it was not a busy area, though so that should be a cinch. Also, when you sign up for the class, you have to call and pay over the phone (or go into the store). Using my credit card over the phone makes me sort of uncomfortable but I haven't had any problems with my card since the class so I think everything was legit. I would highly recommend this place! read more

As someone who has a love of all things crafty, Sew to Speak is right up my alley. Small, quiet, locally-owned shop with a great selection of fun and unique fabrics? I am there! Right now, my muse is Amy Butler fabric (woo-hoo Ohio designer!) and Sew to Speak had a great selection of her designs, as well as several other designers whom I had only seen online before! What a goldmine for me, being able to get the same designer fabrics as online for a better price AND without shipping costs! They also have tons of cute Japanese fabric that I am in love with and want to horde all to myself. The only downfall to Sew to Speak is that you can easily drive right past it and never notice it! Their parking lot is quite small, but accessible none the less. However, that does not take away at all from the outstanding quality of their products and service this small store provides! read more

This place will kill you with cuteness! I was a quilter back in the day, spent many years without access to a sewing machine, and now I'm back in business! I was looking for fabric for my first project (a baby gift) and had struck out at all the big fabric stores. I read Liz M.'s review & decided to stop by on my way through town. They have quite a bit of fabric, a small selection of notions/trim plus quite a few books & patterns. I stopped by twice - once for inspiration and the second time to purchase fabric & a pattern book. Both times, the staff have been phenomenal. I think I deal with the owner today and she was fantastic. She even helped me pick out my fifth fabric choice to help tie my project together. Now, this isn't Jo-Anns, so you aren't going to find $2/yard calico. I paid between $9 and $10 a yard for my five fabric choices...there is a lot in that price range, but then there's also a lot that's much more expensive. There is an actual trunk up front, filled with fabrics & patterns at various discount points. I didn't see anything I wanted for this project, but there was quite a bit on sale. Books are sold at full list price unless they are marked on sale in the trunk. I paid about $9 more for the book I purchased that I would have paid on Amazon, but I like to support small business, and I would have never known to buy that book without having seen it there. A great kitschy little craft haven! This place is stocked with nice people and fantastic hard to find fabrics. Of course these high end and import fabrics come at a price, but it's worth it if it's perfect for your project! They do have a sale trunk at the front of the store and some bolts are marked with a discount dot where the color of the dot equals a percentage off. The one thing I was a little disappointed about was that I just thought they'd have more of a fabric selection, but this is selfish. It is a small shop and the fabrics selected to sell are great, but I wanted more, like on quilthome.com. They also offer sewing classes that look like fun, but the space seemed cramped and would be overwhelming if more than 3 people took a class at once. The store clerk told me that in January, the esteemed Amy Butler is making a store appearance. For those of you who heart Amy Butler, this would be great! Anyway, I think Sew to Speak is a MUST STOP for any sewing craft you want a special fabric for or if you need personal service when shopping for your crafting. read more

I'm in love... Sew to Speak is a great little shop full of fantastic fabrics, neat patterns and space for classes. The fabrics are arranged primarily by designer (Amy Butler, etc., some Japanese fabrics as well), which makes it easy to find what you're looking for if you come in hunting for something specific. I've been sewing regularly for a couple years and this is definitely the place I think of now when I want to create something unique and fun. One of my favorite things about this place: I've visited a few times and the owner is always there. She is very friendly and even recognized me based on the purse I had made. She'll also help you out if you're having trouble deciding how much fabric you'll need for your project. I also like how small the shop is. Small enough to feel cozy, but not so small that you feel like you're tripping over things (or other shoppers). I haven't taken a class here yet, but I have noticed that most of the time the upcoming projects are displayed throughout the store, enticing you to join the next class. Be warned, though, these aren't JoAnn's prices - they aren't JoAnn's (mostly un-cool) selection either. You get what you pay for, and that's why I keep coming back! read more

Only the cutest store ever! I went here for a friend's birthday party after the store had closed for the evening. They were very accommodating with our plans and we made fabric and felt flower brooches (easy for beginners). My friends are very accomplished seamstresses (I'm afraid I brought them down a notch) and they were all going on about how great the store's inventory, pattern selection, designer repetoire, etc is. This is a cute little place with lots of great fabrics including Amy Butler, lots of kiddie prints and hipstery stuff. They have a variety of fabric types and patterns, including oilcloth, canvas and cottons/blends. Most range from $10-30/yard, so a little higher end than your superstores. Love that their store is littered with sample projects (bags, kids' clothes, aprons, retro dresses) from the sewing courses they offer, and more affordably than places like JoAnn's. I can't wait to try one. I just wish it was open on Sundays when I am in project mode! I find all kinds of inspiration for sewing projects in here! I want to buy every single thing they sell. Sewing isn't just for grandmas anymore, and I love it! They are also great for classes. I rented the classroom space (a family-size dining room table in the back) for my 26th birthday last year. April taught my girlfriends and I how to make felt flower pins. The shop even decorated for my birthday and allowed me to bring in birthday treats. If not for my girlfriend's keen eye, I would have probably missed the place, completely. There isn't any real defining signage out front to draw customers in. The parking lot is tiny, but we didn't have a problem finding a spot. Once inside, I felt like I had stepped into a tiny fabric heaven!! Every design was adorably retro-modern, and I had to stop myself from buying a yard of everything in sight!! In addition to the amazing fabrics, they carry a nice selection of really amazing books, as well as hand made examples from the books, which they place nearby. GENIUS!! The lady working that evening was SO very polite and helpful, while avoiding being overbearing and pushy.
