Staff here are very rude and arrogant. You'll be lucky if you get a return smile from anyone there. They are also very suspicious of their customers following them around as if expecting them to steal from them. Plenty of other shops in our area that treat customers like customers not like they're doing you a favor by "allowing" you to shop there. read more

I bought a Bernina Q20 from Sew Special at quilt festival in Houston. Robert did a nice job of setting it up for me and showing me how to use it. The first day I sat down to use it I thought I broke something (be careful using those rulers!). Took it in and they looked at it right away. Turns out I just broke the tip of the needle. They replaced the needle for me and I took the machine back home the same day. They were super helpful!! And Robert is always just an email away for technical questions. I own a Bernina and was constantly getting interrupted by Bobbin errors when trying to complete an important embroidery project. I looked up Bernina dealers in the Houston area and came across Sew Special Quilts in Katy. I found that the people working there are "Sew Special". Not only did Sescely stop what she was doing to investigate my bobbin case issue (which I brought in to the store with me), she worked to solve the problem and repaired the bobbin case in just moments allowing me to get back to finishing my project. She even showed me how to correct the problem if and when it happened again relieving me of future disruptions! "Sew" glad to have found this shop with such knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful staff. Will definitely be my go-to store in the future. BTW...it looks like they have a huge classroom for joining others in learning more about sewing and quilting. Loved looking around the shop at all of the fabrics, accessories, and beautiful quilts on display. I will be back! read more

The staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I brought my machine in for repair and routine maintenance. The repair person came out to explain why I was having problems with the thread. It turned out to be a simple problem which she showed me how to fix myself. Don't you hate when the repair person immediately blames you for your sewing problems without even looking at the machine?. This place is a **** show. Employees are not versed or cross trained in products they carry. Store is tiny and poorly lit and messy. No one was available to help me with a $3000+ purchase of a Koala. More interested and shocked that I was a man who quilts and made me feel very uneasy. Even the male employee was rude and unhelpful. Don't waste your time. I wish I hadn't wasted the 35 minute one way trip. Even if it hadn't been horrible the fabric selections was tiny. Btw I ordered a Koala directly from the company so for anyone reading this, just do it that way. Also it's 2017!! men have been quilting and sewing for centuries. UPDATE 3-8-17. I went to a few other quilt shops today and in talking to them they all said they have heard very similar stories and that they are known for being unwelcoming. So this validates to me that I was not being overly sensitive or imagining the discrimination. read more

I had low expectations of this quilt shop, mainly based on the pictures here, or lack there of. I found this to be a great little store. Mostly Moda fabrics, but also some AGF, Cotton and Steel, and other more modern fabrics. Staff was friendly. I'll definitely be back. read more

I was initially intimidated... I'm a beginner and I have a beginner's machine. I also was having problems with my machine. I stopped by and they took my information but when I explained my problem Jackie (one of the staff there) was more than happy to resolve the issue right then and there! After a few minutes of messing around my problem was solved! They are such an amazing staff: they know their product, what they're doing, and are so very helpful. They really do give a level of service that is so much higher than the "big box generic" stores. I think I have found my new sewing store!!! read more

Excellent establishment! I felt very welcome even though it was obvious I was from out of town and I could tell they knew by name almost everyone that came in while I was there. (This review pertains exclusively to their fabric selection, although Iam aware they do great classes too) I was greeted and they chatted with me a bit, but completely allowed me to lose myself browsing, which I absolutely loved! A fantastic range of beautiful fabrics, great range of designer stuff, loads of Moda, Heather Ross, some lovely Birch lines, I think I may have spotted some Alison Glass too. They had some pretty fat quarters and bolts on sale which were very well priced and which I thoroughly availed myself of! I heard a couple of people say it was pricey while I was browsing, but I felt that the prices were very consistent with market rate, with the exception of the moda mini charms which were a little higher than I would have expected. This is an absolute dream oasis of gorgeous fabrics and I walked out with a very pleasing hual! The lady who helped me at the counter also gave me a little blue bonnets cut on the house as I was visiting from out of town and blue bonnets are the traditional Texas wildflower of choice. This was a much appreciated touch-highly recommend this shop! read more

I own a 15-year-old Bernina embroidery machine ($6,300 when new) which has software that can no longer be updated -- essentially obsolete. I also own a Bernina serger which if fine, but a bit complicated by today's standards. I live about 1.25 hours away from Sew Special Quilts, but it's my nearest Bernina dealer. I decided to check the store out before bringing my sewing machine in for routine maintenance (since the existing software is currently still working), and was told that I would have to leave the machine for about a month. I asked if I could "get in line" and bring it in later -- say, three weeks. No. I was also told that they weren't interested in my old serger for re-sale, although I only saw one Bernina serger in their used offerings, and it was less capable than mine. I purchased my Bernina sewing machine back east where the store had a policy of always taking your old Bernina as a trade in against a new one, assuming you purchased the old one from them. This local store has no such policy, so I will be looking around or possibly returning to the store back east for my next embroidery machine purchase. I did purchase a new serger, a Babylock, from Sew Special. The salesperson was not very familiar with the sergers, but I was, so the deal went OK. The store had to order the model I selected, which took about a week. When it arrived, they said they had to "sew it in," so the machine was dirty with lint when I picked it up. I have no idea if the serger was new or if it was their floor model. They walked me through threading it and told me I was entitled to three orientation classes which wouldn't begin for a month. Part of the deal was a Babylock 60-day free online lessons package. I wondered why it was for only 60 days, since you'd think a $5,000+ serger would give you a lifetime of online lessons access.... and come to find out that the Babylock online lessons cost over $700 for two years after the 60 days is up. Really? You can probably benefit just as much from watching Youtube for free! Oh, and I also received a store card that entitles me to a 10% store discount....for a year. Living so far away, how often do you think I'll be able to benefit from that? A big-dollar purchase, I would think, should entitle one to a forever 10% discount. As we all know, sewing machine accessories are severely overpriced. I purchased two presser feet at Sew Special at a total cost of $150. Ouch! I wanted to buy a trolley for my new serger -- cost is $259.99 at Sew Special. I found the identical trolley -- same model number -- online at a Sew & Vac in Pennsylvania, no tax, and free shipping. I emailed the link for the Sew & Vac trolley to my Sew Special salesperson, asking if they could match the price. After a run-around story about "that must be the trolley that the wheels fall off," and a "no" answer, I wrote to Babylock corporate office to ask about which model trolley had the wheel problem -- obviously I would try to avoid that model. They were unaware of any wheel problems. I purchased the trolley from Pennsylvania, saving over $60. I would have reservations about recommending this store for anything except fabric. I don't plan to do much business with them. I can find most things online at better prices, and the same fabric locally. I understand there is another Bernina dealer in the same vicinity, and am going to check it out for servicing my Bernina embroidery machine. read more

I went today for a quilting class. The store, classroom, and restrooms were clean. The classroom was comfortable. The instructor was very nice, helpful, and was very knowledgeable with regard to the course content. Will definitely go back again to shop and to take future classes. read more

I was referred to them from one of my customers when I was telling them that my wife wanted to start sewing some baby stuff for our new little family member. My wife found the place and went to look at some materials and get some pointers from the "experts". Absolutely horrible service. Took almost 15 mins for anyone to even acknowledge her and then when the lady did pay attention to her, she didn't even seem to care that a CUSTOMER was trying to get some advice as to what to PURCHASE. Needless to say she didn't buy anything after this. I gave you two stars cause I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume this is not the norm. read more

Very nice store I go there sometimes just to see what's in stock and was in there one day talking to the ladies about the different machines and a young lady work with me and I bought a very nice machine at a reasonable price. Everyone there is very friendly they take the time to work with you and talk to you about whatever project or machine you're looking at I would recommend this store to anybody that's into quilting and sewing. read more

Without a doubt, a very special place! I have sewn for over 50 years. When I needed to replace an old sewing machine, I wanted a solid machine that would last, not a cheap machine with plastic parts that would constantly need repairs and adjustments. I also wanted a machine that had many accessories and feet that would allow me to do things my old machine could not. I researched other stores in town. Some never fulfilled their promise of classes. Some offered no classes at all and/or had no service department. Some sold standard brands that are now being made with cheap parts. I asked professional seamstresses for advice. All recommended the brands carried by Sew Special Quilts. When I walked in Sew Special, I didn't plan on making a purchase, but quickly changed my mind. My machine was mid-range in price, but on sale. The embroidery module of that model was also on sale. Sew Special also included classes, taught by the owner herself. The classes I received were wonderful and very helpful. Because I purchased the machine there, I also received discounts on accessories, fabric, thread during the numerous Customer Appreciation Days throughout the year. There are classes for quilts, clothing, embroidery throughout the year. Every month, there is a Bernina Creative Studio on a Saturday. For $10, you can attend 3 lessons and receive download of the lessons to have at home. In addition, there are free 4 hour sewing bees each month and $5 Quilt classes each month. You can easily see all the classes offered on their website. I have attended classes with amazing, creative artists-both male and female. I know for a fact that the store manager and all the incredible technicians are retired military males who love coming to the store. The store manager once was a customer who was just a guy who wanted to learn to quilt as art. Some of his work hangs in the store. It is art! The staff has always been extremely helpful. They want you to be successful in whatever project you try. Each person is a specialist in some area, whether it is sewing, quilting, embroidery, or fabrics. I have always received help when I have needed it. The store has always been clean in the two years I have been going there. The fabric is excellent quality, the kind you want to use for something that will become an heirloom. But the people there are the real treasures. They have given so much to those of us who open the door to this special place. It is very much like a family! read more

I simply needed a small part for my machine that I broke and the other Bernina store on Bandera would not sell it to me unless I left my machine for 3 weeks and charged $225. Sew Special sold me the small part for under $20 and I was sewing again in no time. They are Sew Special. read more

I love this shop! They do something called a $5 Quilt. You pay $10 to start, and then you show up at specified times once a month for a little 45min-1 hr class. If you come with your previous month's block completed, you get the next for free! Its fabric and the pattern. They also go over how to make it. If you forget to make it one month, you pay $5 and get the fabric and pattern. It runs for one year, so if you come each month you'll have 12 12in blocks for $10! They also do applique blocks each month for $12. These classes meet the first week of each month. There are usually several options to choose from that friday and saturday. They recently started offering a beginners version of this, which takes a little longer, but shows you HOW to quilt if you've never done it. Very useful! The shop itself is fantastic. They have cute, name brand fabric that can be hard to find somewhere else. They also sell Bernina machines, but I don't have much experience there, since I own a newer Janome. I have one serious complaint about this shop and that is that they don't offer ANY beginning quilting classes, other than the block of the month, but that really isn't complete enough. I am a quilter, and attend the beginning one with my friend (she's shy) and I have to supplement A LOT at home to help her. Most of the classes they offer are catered to people who own fancy machines- like machine embroidery classes. I own a basic sewing machine, and would love to take classes for making your own bags, clothes, and even baby stuff. They do occasionally offer a baby onesie class or something, but not often enough in my opinion. There's a sewing place in Austin (Stitch Lab) that is AMAZING in this regard. This place could be so much better if they had a more diverse class offering! If you're looking to start quilting and can barely use a machine, the quilt shop here in SA called Memories by the Yard offers a GREAT 7 week beginning quilting class that I did. It's an insane value. I did that and was more than prepared for this place's $5 quilt stuff. read more

Lovely store with a friendly and very knowledgeable staff! My husband and I both quilt and have been coming here for a number of years. The staff is welcoming and friendly to both of us. My husband is fairly new to sewing and quilting and the staff takes great care in explaining and assisting him. He is so comfortable with the store and staff that he purchased his sewing machine from them. He stops in there frequently on his way home from work. In fact, he is planning a trip this week to get annual maintenance on his Bernana. I've purchased my own embroidery, and a smaller sewing machine there too! The $5 quilt block is one of the best! You get all the fabric you need to make your block. Beautiful choices too, the only difficult decision is which color wave to choose! read more
