Yarnivore 1/6/2026. 1 Happy New Year to me as I dusted off my knitting needles and bag which has been hibernating these 5yrs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The store is absolutely lovely and has a large and varied selection of yarns and all things knit/crochet. I opted for a class to help me jump back in to my long lost hobby. Suzy teaches 12pm-2pm and invites us to bring any questions or projects we need help with. She was a delight to meet and helped me remember things I had forgotten from projects I had left unfinished as well as start a new HAT with a new wool yarn that I bought at the store. Cathy helped me at the counter and was so very welcoming and kind. She invited me to wait in their sitting area which is super cozy. I was surrounded by example projects and even a knitting "bowl-stand-table" that was hand made wood from a local wood crafter. I included it in my photo of the sofa area. It is so pretty. I'm satisfied with my class today and have knowledge to finish what I had started and a new project on my circular needles Thanks Suzy and Cathy for your help today. As a beginner crocheter this store was incredibly helpful and friendly for yarn selection. With local and unique yarn colors and styles I was overwhelmed and thrilled with the choices available. The staff is always friendly and helpful and I'm always looking forward to my next trip. 12/12/2025 Yarnivore is a great store with a wide variety of yarns and tools you would need for yarn projects. When I walked in, I was greeted by an older lady with a bob haircut. She was very sweet and obviously loves what she does there. I did not catch her name. She showed me around the store and told me where to locate the different yarns. She brought me to the needles and hooks (just behind the counter) and we talked about the various kinds there were and what seemed to be popular these days. She said they were waiting on hiya hiya needles and pointed to the furthest wall closest to the entrance stating that they had chiaogoo needles. She went on her way and I first perused the yarn and then made my way back to the needles. I may have made two circle passes back to the needles as I thought about which kinds and sizes I would need. The 1st lady I met with was behind the counter while I was going through all the different brands and sizes of needles. The needles are hung on the wall clipped together on key rings. They're grouped by brand, type and sizes. As I looked through the needles, which there seemed to be hundreds, the 1st lady called a 2nd lady over to help her with computer register system. Once I think they fixed the computer, the 2nd lady approached me and asked if I needed help. I told her I was looking for certain needles. She told me normally, they would need to assist me with the needles. So I told her a size of dpn needles I needed in mm and she handed me a US size. I corrected her to which she said, I don't know mm. So the next set of needles I told her Size 6 to make it easier for her to locate that size. She handed me 6 mm. Knowing I was going to look at more needles, I was worried this was going to be a very long process. We worked together to eventually get me 6 packs of knit pro needles and I wanted to look at the cables, and fixed needles. I want to interject here that I was looking at the nova and zing knit pro needles. She said she couldn't tell the difference between the two except that one is more expensive than the other. I know my needles, and I know the difference between the two. When I pointed down the way and said I wanted to look at those needles closest to the register she put her hands out and said "we don't let anyone back here". Not only had I been back there, I was there when the 1st lady was standing there and I had already been behind the counter when the 2nd lady came behind the counter. I told 2nd lady, well the 1st lady brought me back here to see the needles. She said "oh, she did?" And that was it. How would I shop for needles if I am not allowed to be at the needles? I can't see them from the counter. If they don't want anyone near the register, I understand completely, but both ladies were either one or both nearby. When I said I wanted to look at those other needles, could 2nd lady not walk me to them- so that I am not alone behind the register? Am I supposed to have an elderly lady hand me a specific brand, size and type of needle if I don't know what's on the wall? The process would take forever. Yet, she didn't offer that either. She didn't offer any suggestions or assistance to me seeing the chiaogoo needles. I put everything I collected in my basket back to where I found them, and left the packs of needles I was going to buy on the counter and walked right out. I had planned to purchase more needles (the ones I had been looking at prior to the 2nd ladies confrontation) but she left a really bad taste in my mouth. I don't want the 1st lady to get in trouble. She is the only reason this isn't a 1 star review. She was absolutely wonderful and just a bubbly fun personality. The 2nd lady needs to learn how to be more useful. If she thinks I couldn't afford the needles I wanted to look at, she was wrong. There's gotta be a better system with the needles if Yarnivore wants them sold. read more

Stopped in on a trip to the big city and what a delight. I rarely get a chance to squeeze a good hank of yarn and there were so many good ones in here! I was especially delighted with the collection of local and regional hand-dyed yarns - I will be back to this store *specifically* to take a closer look at that stash. It also looked like there was an expert on hand (aside from the shop lady) who was available to offer advice or give one on one instruction. Really great resource and one I wish I had where I live. Months ago I went in to ask for help on a knitting project and not only would no one help me, they told me that I didn't want to put the pockets on the sweater. Today I went in and there were two ladies working. One was in a "class" talking endlessly about foot surgery and not having a class. The other was helping two ladies in the front with their knitting projects. I wanted to buy about $150 worth of yarn for a project but nobody could be bothered to help a paying customer. While I cannot believe the variety of texture and color of the materials they sell, it is the knowledge and helpfulness of the staff that keeps me, my wife and my kids coming back. Want to learn how to knit? Done! Want to learn how to crochet? Done Want to learn how to weave? Done! Want to learn how to make yarn from newly shorn wool, alpaca, mohair or your favorite cat or even a long haired dog? Done! Just think, now your dog can pitch in and help you make a doggy sweater! One the of the most interesting things you can learn at Yarnivore and buy equipment for is making the yarn needed for knitting, crocheting and weaving.... They have fairytail spinning wheels, a space age thing called the Queen Bee and, my personal favorite, drop spindles that look like an inverted spinning top. IT IS AMAZING! You can make thread/yarn from almost any natural or synthetic fiber that is "sticky" enough to hang together when tightly wound... My kids (and me too) are mesmerized every time the staff gives a demonstration. Even though we live in Los Angeles (really) we make it a point to spend time at Yarnivore whenever we are in San Antonio... We always learn something new, get to see projects in progress and my daughter gets to take a class or two that connects her to her artsy creative side. I was in the store about 20 minutes, they weren't busy, and nobody talked to me. The selection of arms available was very tempting. Then when I approached the counter and described what I wanted to knit they referred me to the internet rather than showing me yarns and needles that could help me get started. Love this place for my new crochet hobby. There is so much yarn and so many whole books and patterns. The staff is super helpful and welcoming answering questions from a newbie. I have been taking the Six Months to Be a Better Knitter with Wendy at the shop. Every two weeks for six months! I have learned so much in the last couple of weeks that I know I will be a super amazing knitter at the end of this, I am admittedly a very novice knitter even though I have been knitting since 2007. My son -- yes, my son -- and I found Yarnivore as the result of a random Google search. He got the bug after stumbling onto a YouTube video and needed to get the materials to start a blanket. When we arrived, we found the place nearly empty of other customers, a fact which caused some concern. The owner explained that we had just missed the noontime, post-July 4th rush. Apparently knitting addicts are, as the store's name suggests, are indeed yarnivores when their supplies dwindle. Whether we would have experienced such a willing helpful reception during their recent reported rush we can never know for sure. But willing and helpful the owner was. She took the time to show my son -- yes, my son -- all the possible materials he could use. She pointed out that, due to his size/age, he would need to take this and that into consideration. She gave him advice about the craft itself, showing him all the different types of wool, instructional books. She took the time to answer all of his questions and gave him encouraging words that he could apply in his life outside of knitting. In a word, the experience was extraordinary. The shop itself was immaculate and well-ordered. Everything in its right place. I have experience with high-end specialty shops and Yarnivore is top-notch. Went today for the first time. Probably last time. Walked in and the two women at the register were talking to someone, I had to step around one of them and the customer to get in so they knew I was there, but no greeting or anything. I walked around a few, heard some ask if I had questions. Said yes to realize she was talking to the one other customer now in the store. Wandered more thinking she'll ask me when they finish. Nope. After the customer finished they just stood up front talking. (Third employ was in back giving a lesson I believe.) I walked around for almost 15 minutes. More than half that time I was the only customer. As a newbie I could have used a little help simply being pointed in the direction of what I was looking for if nothing else. Neither of them ever acknowledged me until I walked up to the register, and then the woman on the register, still no greeting, simply said "anything else?" Finally, as I said I am somewhat new, or more accurately starting new after many years, but if you buy the twisted yarn, don't yarn shops usually ball it for you? It was true in other shops in other states. If not something that they do here, no biggie, but if it is normal procedure, then they ignored that as well. For the cost of good yarn, some customer service would be nice. I can get answers to questions from other Amazon buyers, which would be more than I got there today. Really nice yarn, but not worth the drive in SA traffic to be completely ignored. read more

They have a large selection of yarn and it is very well organized. It's easy to narrow down by fiber and weight so you're not searching aimlessly. I've always found help when I've needed it. Also their clearance section is pretty good. Several of the employees are pattern designers, and you'll find samples throughout the store. If I'm looking for needles, this is the place I go. Today when I purchased a yarn, I was told it tended to bleed, so the gal gave me a color catcher for free. I've brought my 7 year old daughter with me several times and although she isn't loud or overly active, she does like to hide and touch the yarn. Had almost the same experience and when the girl was finally pulled from a conversation she rushed and gave me yarn and grabbed needles that just didn't work. I went back to the store later that day and the girl was having fun talking to another frequent buyer and took 15 min to get help. The girl started to help me then a seller came on and they started talking! Oh my gosh... not for newbies. I wish the owner was there my daughter said she is nice could have helped. My annual visit to San Antonio includes a visit here. When I entered I thought there was a class going on, but, no, it was just really, really busy! That means I got to browse the entire store without anyone interrupting me. Unfortunately, after all the other customers left and I was alone with the only other two people there - employees - still no one attended to me. My feelings were slightly hurt! Of all the yarn stores in the area I think this is probably the best one to visit if you're considering taking up knitting or crochet but don't know much about it yet. In fact this is a pretty crochet-friendly shop which is a bit of a rarity. Most tend to focus just on the knitters. I'm just a knitter but I totally empathize with the crocheters who feel like they get a bum deal. Some of the sample garments for the yarn are crocheted, which made me want to try my hand at hooking again (this usually ends in tears). The people who work here are knowledgeable without being snotty, helpful without being pushy. They have a great selection of books and the staff is always willing to help you find yarn for a project in one of the books. Yes it's in a strip mall and the store interior is pretty utilitarian but there's parking, the space is large and can accommodate a lot of shelves for yarn, which is organized by weight. I'll take gorgeous quality yarn over ambiance any day. I've bought some locally dyed yarn and beautiful hand dyed roving here before. And it has a pretty big selection of unusual Noro. Elsabeth Lavold, Debbie Bliss, Malabrigo (lace and sock sizes!) All in all I like this yarn store. I'm usually in a rush when I visit during the Best Little Yarn Crawl in Texas, which involves visiting about ten yarn stores all over hill country on Columbus Day weekend. So I'm usually tired and/or broke by the time I get here. But they're always incredibly nice and I usually end up leaving with something fun. read more

The variety and quality of yarn here is amazing - if you want cheap bulk yarn, go to Michael's, but if you want unique high quality (and locally produced) yarn, this is an amazing spot to come! I like the staff here and the selection of fine quality yarns is very good. Few lower-end materials for beginners/lower-budget projects, but that is what Michael's is for. They offer classes in for beginner to intermediate knitters and crocheters as well. I've known both owners and they are both nice, helpful people. I haven't been since they moved, but the layout of the store used to be by brand rather than by fiber content or weight. Manos del Uruguay, Mirasol, Noro, and Elsebeth Lavold can be found among the shelves and shelves of yarn. They don't tend to repeat many of the items you can find at other area shops, which is nice for variety. Stopping by is always the best way to see what is in stock; the website isn't as accurate as it once was (for yarn stock... classes are up-to-date). They also have fiber for spinning, spindles, needles, and other notions. I think they still have the buy a book, get a 20% discount on yarn for a project from that book (as long as both are purchased in the same visit), which is nice. read more

I love, LOVE this store! I seriously look forward to visiting San Antonio for three reasons, seeing my kids, eating some great food and visiting Yarnivore (not necessarily in this order!). Yarnivore's orderly displays, plethora of wonderful books,class offerings and beautiful fibers (did I mention the super friendly, helpful staff ?)make me wish I lived closer so I could visit on a weekly basis. WARNING....Fiber lovers you'd better support these local retailers (like Yarnivore!) and stop ordering your supplies on-line to save a buck or two or you'll loose these treasures (like what has occurred in the Dallas area!).I live in the Dallas/McKinney area and sadly there are NO LONGER ANY Yarn Shops within 25 miles of my home. read more

This shop is well stocked with a variety of yarns that you won't find at the more popular hobby shops in S. A. however, I'm giving it a lower rating because I really didn't feel very welcome there. The staff is superficially friendly and by that I mean that I wasn't even greeted when I entered the store though I was the only customer there. Once inside, I was never approached by neither of the two female employees who were at the cash register. I had to find my way around to decipher how they had the yarn stocked in the store. Once I figured out the layout of the store (by myself) I was able to browse and find something that I liked. Like another customer commented, I was hoping that my second visit would have been better (my 1st visit was the same very non-caring by employees ...) but unfortunately, I can't report a better experience. I can understand if the store had a rush of customers taking up the employees' time and attention, but this was not the case here. I was the only customer there. Oh well . . . The only plus about this store is that they have unusually nice yarn and that it is close to where I live. Fortunately, this is not the only yarn shop in the city ... This shop has the best variety in San Antonio but service is a hit or miss. Stopped by and was wandering around the store for 15 minutes before greeted by someone. Sigh. The Yarn they carry is similar to the other area stores. They do carry two hot ones at the moment - Anzula and Baah. Unfortunately they don't carry Anzula's Squishy yarn! By far the Best yarn out there! For the rest they have Brown Sheep, Debbie Bliss, Rowan, and yarns carried by Plymouth and KFI. They offer an extensive selection of notions and Knitting bags as well as spinning and weaving supplies. This store is the best place to get Hiya Hiya needles. Overall this is a good solid yarn store but is currently lacking in the more trendy yarns like Madelinetosh. Medium price point. Plenty of parking. Good light. Lots of classes. read more

This is a seriously awesome yarn store. I know you might be thinking- yarn? I don't even do any yarn related crafting. You will after you come here! They have the best class offering of any craft store ever! These classes are an awesome value. They're cheap, and effective. Also most of them occur pretty regularly, so don't worry about missing them one month. They also offer affordable private lessons, which can be great if you have something specific you want to make. Now, listen. This isn't JoAnn's. Their yarn is almost without exception more money than anything you'll find there. But most of it is soft. SO soft! If you're going to be making something you're going to WEAR, shouldn't it feel good on your skin?! Anything you make in the beginner classes WILL turn out well, so spring for better quality yarn. Your skin will thank you! They also sell books and yarn work supplies. These are also good quality and will last a while. Worth the investment. read more

The store seems a little small from the outside, but boy is it packed with all sorts of scrumptious yarn and notions on the inside! I had a continental knitting lesson with Moses a few months ago and was very impressed with how well he explained everything. If I move back to the area (or visit for an extended time) I'll be signing up for some of the other classes I've seen posted. read more

Just stopped by to pick up yarn for a new project. I was immediately greeted by Moses and he listened well to what I was looking for, also offering great suggestions. With his guidance I was able to select a beautiful hand dyed yarn from a local vendor. He offered to wind my yarn purchase from the hanks into the "cake" format, saving me a lot of time at home where I'd otherwise have to do it by hand. Good place but not for me. I'm allergic to wool and most yarn they have is wool or wool mix. I was free to look around, people there just told me "let me know if you need anything" and let me browse. I was fine with that because they were attentive when I did have questions. The few things I could use were on the pricey side, so I left without buying anything. Every time I go into this store (I make only about 3 trips a year) I think to myself, "Maybe the service will be better this time". I pump myself up because I love supporting small businesses and the yarn is so much fun to touch and look at. However, I'm pretty disappointed with the service, especially my most recent trip. I wasn't even GREETED upon entering the store. It was apparent that I was the only paying customer at this time. There was a private lesson in the back and two ladies in the front working on their personal projects and another woman helping them. The lady helping, to whom I found out later was running the register, did not even turn her head to say hello. I thought, oh well, I'm sure she'll approach me soon to see if I needed help with anything. I continued to browse the store for a good 15 minutes and nobody acknowledged my presence. I pick out several yarns and make my way to the register. I waited a minute and the lady working the register made no attempt to get up, acknowledge, or even look at me as I continues waiting. She continued to assist a lady with her shawl project and not even turn around. At this point I was getting kind of upset so I walked over to their knitting circle and plopped myself down and looked right at the lady. She finally lifted her head and said, "I'll be with you in just a moment". Seriously?! I've been here for 15 minutes and I finally have to stare you down to get your attention and you tell me to wait? She finally checks me out and she's kind of cold, but she does offer to spin my yarn which is a huge help. While she's doing that I ask if she is in the middle of a class to where she simply answers no. By now I'm starting to wonder if she is just has a personality disorder... So there's my review. By far, Yarnivore has the biggest selection of yarn available in the metro SA area. They have a large selection of needles and notions as well as bags of all sizes and makes. Unfortunately, the higher end yarns they used to carry have gone by the wayside in favor of the mid-range yarns that most of the other stores carry as well as the big box stores like Joann's and Michael's. The shop is the only one in San Antonio offering spinning fibers and equipment and weaving supplies. They offer a great many classes, but for the budget conscious consumer, not all the classes are affordable once you factor in the price of yarn and supplies. The atmosphere of the shop has changed drastically over the coarse of time they've been open. The shop has had 3 different owners since opening. While the staff who have been there for years are friendly and courteous, the newer staff are not as friendly and one of them actually follows, skulking in the shadows as it were watching you like a hawk as if you're going to shoplift. Several times we've gone into the store and we were not even greeted upon entering because the person behind the counter was too involved chatting it up with a person at the counter (the person behind the counter we found out later was the new owner). When my significant other went to the shop to pick up a holiday gift for me, he was made to feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome which was the first time that had ever happened as the previous owner was always genuinely warm and welcoming to every perspective customer who walked through her door. The shop has changed and is not the same as it was. Hopefully, they'll take comments and try to improve their customer service. read more
