SCREEN PRINTING CLASS was excellent. I live way out and drove in for the class and it was worth both the drive and the cost. Tons of information, lots of explanation about why you should use one product over another, very hands on, and walks through the whole process from start to finish. It is a class with a focus on business/pro-level screen printing, NOT hobbyist stuff so the information is not simply a generic "how to" but a "how to" with equipment and supplies that would make the most sense in a professional setting. THE STORE seems oriented toward professional artists and crafters, less toward hobbyists. There were multiple sections that really surprised me in terms of selection - I haven't seen some of that kind of supply on hand outside of specialty shops I've visited in other large cities. Specifically, the selection of vinyl, HTC, etc for shirts and jerseys was outstanding. The screen printing supplies (ink and chem selection) and equipment (presses, tools, etc) were impressive. And the quality and variation in fine painting was great, as well as the multiple options for easels, art tables, brushes, etc. Finally, I got the impression that this is absolutely the kind of place that would be able and willing to order supplies or equipment on request, which is gold. *Really valuable resource to the regional arts community.* read more

Cool building downtown, real art vibes. Student discounts. Even taking adult community art classes. The prices are good regardless, cheaper than Jerry's on a lot of stuff. I think Herweck's is a bit overhyped. I really love art supply stores, but this one definitely fell a bit short in stock and price. I typically enjoy looking for stationary and calligraphy items. I was excited to see a small nook devoted to pens near the left of the entrance. However, when I attempted to dip into some of the sample pens, I was sorely disappointed to see that all of the ones I tried to use were either dried out or missing nibs. Yikes. I typically don't purchase pens unless I know more about them from a like-minded friend or by actually testing them in store. There do seems to be a generous area for screening t-shirts and a modest collection for traditional canvas artists. Prices are pretty high in my opinion, so if you're operating on a tight budget, you might want to find a different store if you need a large amount of paint, canvas, or sketch pads. Now, let me tell you about the parking situation. Herweck's has about 5-10 spots allotted for customers in the lot marked. However, when you walk in, you find out from a posted sign that you can actually get a voucher / pass from the store for your car. Well, considering I was a first time browser of the store, I had no idea and ended up paying about $10 for parking in the same lot. I dabble in the vinyl business and find that it is cheaper to order vinyl online. But, when you're in a pinch.. it's good o have a local store. The inventory is there.. with a good assortment of colors and styles... only complaint, well 2 complaints. #1* I went in there about 2 weeks ago and was greeted with a smile (a pretty smile at that). I gave the associate my order and she went to cut the materials. I met her at the register and she reviewed her hand written note of my order and rang me up. I paid and was on my way home. Later I open up my vinyl and start laughing.. I asked for 5' of white HTV Vinyl and was given 5' of black. I checked her hand written order.. she wrote down white but cut black. #2* The next day I returned to go ahead and purchase the correct vinyl (I decided to keep the black since I can use it for future projects) and again was greeted and helped by a staff member. He cut the correct material and correct amount. After I gave my $20 to cover the $17 bill, the employee handed me my receipt and bag and wished me a nice day. I stood there looking at him.. after a few seconds he asked "is there anything else", I semi sarcastically replied - " I would like my change". He apologized and looked at the receipt and handed me two $1 bills... I smiled and said "almost there, but not quite".. he asked what I meant and I solved the mathematical equation verbally of $20-$17= $3.. not 2. read more

I have always found the staff to be incredibly helpful and kind. I come here quite often to buy my vinyl and usually don't ask for help just grab what I need and go but I overheard one of the associates giving directions on some thing I was interested in so I leaned over and listened. when she was done with that customer I had a question so I Asked , she became kind of rude with me so I just kind of blew her off and went on about my business again I picked up a piece of vinyl I wasn't too familiar with and I asked another associate about it and she very vague and and rudelike told me there was instructions right next to the vinyl thank you exactly what I needed but you didn't have to be rude about it I really like going here cause it's easier for me than to order online it's definitely more expensive but it's easier but after this experience I can't tell you it's gonna be my go to store I have found that Avia that is mostly for shirts but also carries vinyl and so much cheaper will be my next stop when in need I'm all about small business especially being that I am a small business but ladies ,people are going to have questions you must be willing to answer them this is the business you're in. read more

I'm pretty happy Herweck's is nearby, and because of their awesome selection, I'm giving them a five. ALSO I took a workshop there at night on screen-printing, and it was really great. Hands-on, friendly, and above all, thorough. None of the basic goofy stuff, but seriously "you need to know this to start a business in this area" level of information. I highly recommend their workshops. The parking situation can suck unless you get lucky. And the staff are hit or miss. Some of them are really friendly and knowledgeable. Others aren't as informative or helpful. The older staff, in my experience, are more approachable and helpful. I hear that they now do a ton of online business. They sometimes stock special equipment that's used, so if you're looking for a big-ticket item, it's worth speaking to them about availability. You can get all range of supplies here, from student to pro grade. Ask someone if you want advice on materials. Or take a workshop. I'll be doing more of that for sure. read more

i tell you, it's tough going from having six awesome art stores with walking distance to none. ...none in walking distance that is. herweck's is still awesome! it's really the only shining example of a decent art store in san antonio, unfortunately. i don't enjoy having to bum a ride downtown every time i need something from an art store. but an art store it is none the less, not a half way craft store. the selection is decent, all the important brands are there. it seems to lack a lot of items i wish they had (a bigger selection of bulk paper, more selections in drawing materials, etc) but makes up for it by having items i haven't seen before (i got to try those new liquitex acrylic inks there. even dick blick doesn't sell them in their 150ml bottles!) the prices could be better. that's just wishful thinking though since i know few smaller art stores can have the kinds of prices dickblick, pearl, or artists&craftsman can have. catch them on a sale (or maybe score on their discounted items) and the prices are more my style. ;) the staff seems friendly though preoccupied (even if there is no one in the store) every time i come in. typical downtown parking: nonexistent! price and distance brought into consideration, herwecks probably won't replace my online ordering habit while i live in this city. but if i ever need that art-store-only item in a pinch, herweck's will do just fine! read more

You can't beat there prices, I even price compared with Amazon.com and Asel's Art Supply. They have a frequent buyers card, but they are really cheap about it. Your supposed to get a stamp every $25. Well, today I bought $100 of stuff and they said I could have only one stamp, company policy. Super LAME. The bosslady/owner is not very friendly. She's short, brown hair, about 50. There's another woman who works there as a manager, she's awesome. Dina (not sure on spelling, pronounced "dye-na") is her name. As far as canvases, pads, paints, and brushes, this is your go-to place for sure: a whole half of the store dedicated to painting? Fantastic. But I do wish they had a better selection of art pens: they have the dual-brush artist markers, but as far as Le Pen and the like, not much to select from.
