Surrounded by cottonwood trees and a river running outside makes for a beautiful scenic atmosphere. You can hear the owls and birds as well, very tranquil. They have a fire pit for use and a covered area for seating to eat and they offer breakfast for $12. There's much to do for outdoor enthusiasts. The hospitality here is amazing. The Innkeeper is so wonderful and hospitable, we loved all of the little touches-everywhere from the garden to the shower curtain. There is also a stellar little diner attached to the Inn. We found the chef to be extremely passionate about his cooking and the labor of love that is the Monroe Inn. It seemed like everyone we encountered was passionate about the Inn and the beautiful little town. So many people were working together to make the Inn and its diner just the most relaxing, beautiful, and enjoyable experience. We fell in love with this sleepy little town and can't wait to go back.

We stayed at Big Rock Candy Mountain Resort in one of the train car units in October, and it was…read moreeasily one of the most disappointing lodging experiences we've ever had -- especially for the price (nearly $800 for three nights). From the moment we walked in, it was obvious the unit hadn't been properly cleaned or maintained in a long time. There was thick dust buildup, cobwebs in corners and on light fixtures, and visible grime on multiple surfaces -- even the inside of the front door. We found a dirty sock on the floor and an empty tissue box shoved under the TV. The bed frame was broken, kitchen countertop was broken with large amounts of grout missing, several lamps didn't work, and overall, the train car felt run-down and neglected. It wasn't just the unit. The entire property looked uncared for. The sprinklers outside our window pounded against the glass at 2 a.m., waking us up and forcing us to go outside in the dark to fix them ourselves. The convenience store was rundown, the soda fountain machine didn't work, and there was no coffee so we had to drive 10 miles each morning just to get coffee. There is NO restaurant on site. They sell gas station nachos and hotdogs. They advertise Starlink satellite internet but there are only hotspots around the property. I reported the state of the unit to staff upon checkout and followed up with photos afterward. Instead of taking responsibility, management chose to minimize our experience and referenced a supposed "strict no refund policy" that doesn't appear anywhere on their website or in the confirmation email. When the owners finally responded, they brushed off everything as a matter of "personal standards" and stated "after reviewing all the facts in the situation, a 10% refund seems appropriate, if not generous". The resort is now under new management, and it shows. The focus seems to be entirely on increasing revenue, not maintaining the property or caring for guests. The way they've handled our situation -- dodging responsibility, minimizing our experience, and inventing policies to avoid accountability -- says everything about their priorities. For a place that advertises itself as a "resort," the experience was anything but. The property is in disrepair, the cleanliness is unacceptable, and the management clearly cares more about money than the people spending it. Save yourself the disappointment -- this place is not worth your time or your money. The photos I've attached speak for themselves.

There are no sit down restaurants left after Covid and pickings are pretty slim even fir takeout. Luckily there is the Bowery Haven Snack shop. What to like: fresh faced young people taking your order and handing it to you directly when it's done. Most of these folks are college kids from local schools up for the summer to work. Remember that when you tip! They all seem very happy. Burgers. A variety of burgers freshly made to order on a tasty fresh bun. Fries cooked in beef tallow. You can substitute macaroni salad but the fries...Remember how great these were back in the day? They also have a good chicken strip dinner and fish n chips. They have salads as well. Not to miss is their delicious lemonade is multiple flavors and fountain drinks. Top everything off with hand scooped ice cream and believe me the scoops are very generous. The only downside is that everything is a little pricey. However when you consider any alternative is 45 minutes away and the great people, it seems worth it. Plenty of parking and lots of nice souvenirs and fishlake clothes to browse while you wait. Highly recommended.

Manager Denise is very enthusiastic about the renovations to pursue and was very accommodating. She was open to our suggestions for upcoming improvements.
