Okay, I haven't been here all that often, despite walking past here quite a few times (it is conveniently located opposite the central markets and across the road from Her Majesty's theatre). The pub has a lovely restaurant with a non-smoking beer garden (all the smokers end up at the tables on Grote Street, which tends to get pretty crowded on a Friday). The bar itself is also really nice, though does get pretty crowded as well. They have an okay selection of beers available, but it is one of those Adelaide pubs that I do really like.

Until a couple of weeks ago that was, when I saw a bunch of kids trundling in with guitars, amps and the like which roused my curiosity. After drinking a beer at the bar next door and then witnessing another couple of young punks with instruments heading in my curiosity overwhelmed me and I was forced to follow suit. To my surprise, in the back corner of the Metropolitan was a music venue! Not knowing then and certainly not recalling now the names of the bands performing, I paid the $5 entry fee (well actually my girlfriend paid the $5 entry fee for me cos I couldn't afford it) and headed in. Completely out of place and somewhat resembling the aspect of an early Beasty Boys film clip, the venue presented a low lying stage in the back corner of a dimly lit and sparsely furnished room. Furnished, really, only with the gauntly bodies of young punks haunched against the walls. But the most amazing thing was, that I was witnessing this from outside, from a beer garden in which I could not only see and hear the band playing, but I could also smoke. Surely now unique in Adelaide and fundamentally a thing of the past the Metropolitan presents a venue where one can watch live music, drink a beer and smoke at the same time. As for the quality of the music, well, that's never really been much of a concern anyway.

Noisey wedding guests no doubt drunk on the free alcohol were an issue as was the ever hot/cold surging shower in the morning . Unfortunately the breakfast was terrible. Old fruit, rock hard sliced avocado, terrible flat white, empty juices bottles, packet mueslis, 5 people always crowding around one toaster. The told us the breakfast wasn't included in room when it was etc. Hardy's Verandah restaurant was smoke & mirrors chef's ego minuscule portions. Go to the Magill Estate for a great degustation or to Maximillians restaurant down the road. Since the Mecure group took over Mt Lofty House has been renovated and the grounds are amazing. We went there for Xmas lunch- 7 star views 7 stars for being open! 5 star grounds (this place would be great for a wedding!) Great friendly service Good entertainment Nice layout in general in the beautifully perched rear function room with valley view. Full points for not kicking us out early. The food wasn't as it should be for the price. The small sizes were fine for a lunch but for the price it wasn't great. Very average pre prepared out of the packet/jar antipasto with supermarket quality prosciutto etc which most people didn't really eat. Despite the presentation , the rest of the meal was average. The eighties pub 'desert buffet' queue visually ruined the day, they should have just done a selection for each table and moved to quality not quantity.

Honestly, I find the pubs in the northern suburbs have a lot more character than the ones down south, which is actually saying something. Okay, this pub is in the middle of an industrial area, so when I wandered around here on a Sunday it was pretty dead - but it was still open, which was interesting. Like many of the suburban pubs it has everything one would expect from such a place. However, I have to admit that it wasn't hugely fantastic.

Specials had to be ordered at the bar. Waited inline for 15 minutes. When asking for the roast chicken special. Was informed it was no longer available, no sign on counter to advise. Those who managed to order via the QR me&u app received their order within 30 mins. However, those that ordered at the bar didn't receive their order. After 45 minutes of waiting, we flagged down a server and was advised. 'It's probably on its way', then continued away from the kitchen to clear a table. After 10 mins, that server asked the kitchen. Then, 10 mins later, a manager attended our table and advised that the order had not been finalised due to different ordering methods, and the order will be sorted straight away. We waited another 15 mins and watched as others got their orders with the same meals, these orders weren't bumped. A member of our party went and asked for the entrees at least. Then, 5 minutes later, the food appeared. The 2nd round of drinks ordered by app appeared in different glasses, not the same volume as previous glasses. Food tasted great. I feel the staff require basic hospo training and requirements to meet the basics.

This was one of those pubs that people would always talk about, but I never got around to paying it a visit. Okay, they probably have done it up somewhat since I was much younger, but it still didn't stand out from all the other pubs that I have visited in my time. I did quite like the front bar though, which was on two levels, and the beer garden was quite nice, but I doubt I will be going back here again (though who knows, I might just do that).

However, recently I decided that I'd actually check it out, namely because it has been sitting there for ages, and I still haven't visited it. Well, this ended up being a really pleasant surprise, especially since it came across as basically being like a European style bar. It even had beer, and some really, really nice beers at that. Oh, and they also have an awesome cellar downstairs as well. Really worth checking out.

I went to Apothecary 1878 just this past Tuesday for my birthday dinner with my partner. I picked…read morethe destination because I love cozy settings, especially in the winter, and from what I could tell from its (somewhat amateur) website, Apothecary was right up my alley. Don't let their website fool you: this place is professional without being fussy, with excellent service and even better food. We started with the French baguette (ordered another of these in the end, as it was very small), the baked chèvre with grapes and almonds, and a cous cous, cauliflower and coriander salad. Each tapa was exquisite in its own right, and together they were a satisfying, varied start to the meal. For mains, my partner ordered a steak with gorgonzola buttered leeks while I chose the mushroom pithivier (fancy-talk for pie) served on cauliflower soup. We also ordered a spinach salad with grapes, red onion and walnut on the side. My partner reported that his steak was very rich and very filling. I tasted his leeks and they were just as he described. My mushroom pie was extremely rich as well, but flavourful too; it didn't just rely on the heavy, earthy qualities of the pastry and mushrooms to carry the dish. We both loved the salad, and the side serving was generous. Looking back, I think that next time I will order the same tapas, with maybe another of the vegetarian ones, and the side spinach salad. It would be the perfect amount of food. We took advantage of the extensive wine list and tried a couple of glasses before choosing a bottle with dinner. There was a quirk with the wine service which I've never seen before: the server brought our bottle, poured two glasses, then took it back to the bar to be placed on ice, within our sight. She then took charge of refilling our glasses, so we never actually touched our wine bottle. An interesting and, I suppose "full service" approach, though we do usually like to control our own drinking pace. Anyway, we finished with a chocolate pudding that sported a sole candle in celebration of my birthday!. The server mentioned that he wouldn't sing, but did wish me a happy birthday-- I think that was best for everyone. The pudding was light as air and melted in our mouths. To sum up: Apothecary 1878 is an intriguing little restaurant with interesting and history-rich decor whose regal-ness (I know, not a word) is a little misplaced in its Hindley St location. We left stuffed to the brim, happy, and content after 3 hours of delicious food, tasteful service, and beautiful wine.

We had not eaten at all that day due to work, so on the first night, we thought to eat at the hotel and ordered two chicken parmies-what could go wrong? The schnitzels were barely cooked, and the sauce was very bland, though it came with a generous serving of chips. We ordered our food around 6:30 PM. Within six hours (by midnight), my partner became extremely ill, and an hour or so after that, she couldn't stop projectile vomiting Eventually, It subsided, but the next morning (Friday), she ate some toast and went back to vomiting violently, leading us to go straight to the hospital. After talking with a doctor and after many drugs, we were told she was suffering from extreme food poisoning. Once we learned this, we instantly knew there was only one possible source: our hotel When we got out, we informed the hotel manager that night. She took all our detalls and sald she wasn't the manager who deals with this and that we should come back the morning of our checkout when the right manager. would be in. Upon checkout, that manager said the same thing and assured us someone would call us. Well, that was at least a week ago, and we have heard nothing. We have attempted to handle this situation face-to-face with the hotel, but communication is a two-way street, and I am extremely disappointed. The worst part of all this is the dinning area and out door area is beautiful and cosy and the meal looked absolutely delicious but looks are deceiving. Meanwhile the jarlsberg arancini were delicious even though they didn't taste like jarlsberg. The prawn and cured salmon pizza was loved by some and disliked by others. Beer garden is amazing. As soon as word gets out, this place is going to get very busy. Great live music. Great choice of seating (stools, seats, undercover, in the sun), HUGE TV, awesome atmosphere, nice range of wines. Staff were a little on the inexperienced side but I assume they're just new and in training. Overall, two great experiences. We'll be back again.

It comes across more as one of those local pubs that only locals visit, but that probably has a lot to do with its location. The reason I came here (with my friend) was simply because I would see it everytime we drove down to Semaphore and I thought it might be an idea to check it out. The atmosphere really isn't the best, and you do feel out of place if your not a local, but the cool beer garden does give it points.
