Okay, I generally don't come out to this part of Adelaide all that often, probably because anybody…read morethat I used to know out here has long since moved on. However, I did want to come and check this place out and I must say that I quite liked it. Okay, it is basically a suburban pub with everything that you would expect from one, however the front bar, and the adjoining beer garden was quite nice. While it is certainly not a pub that I would continue making the trek out to visit (despite not living in Adelaide) I did quite like the vibe and the atmosphere, especially in the front bar.

The Blue Gums is a suburban pub that wishes it wasn't…read more The front bar and beer garden are updated, vibrant and appealing. They have regular entertainment and live music. We were originally planning to eat in the beer garden which was well-heated despite the cold but unfortunately, despite the mostly enclosed space, smokers are still permitted to ruin the air for others and the only table available wouldn't have accommodated a high chair. We moved across to the bistro. A miscommunication meant some attitude was forthcoming from one staff member, however her co-worker was bright, bubbly and very friendly. There was some discussion as to whether our group of 7 plus high chair could be accommodated but in the end, they put us at the end of a long table that was already set up for another function. For the next day. I was surprised there may have been the potential to turn away paying customers in favour of keeping a table empty for a booking the following day, but we were grateful to get a table inside regardless. The bistro is generally packed, mostly with families, however I wouldn't say it was "family-friendly". More like "family-tolerated". High chairs are available and there are kids meal deals but nothing for older kids to do and most pubs of a similar genre provide game consoles, a playground or even activity packs. Our junior dining companions declared it boring. The décor is a mix of late 90s bistro, with neon script signage over the bar and a cork themed carpet (as in actual corks, not cork texture) and some half-hearted attempts at edgy modern lighting fixtures. The menu is pricey for what it is, which is standard pub fare. I ordered the sirloin, rare, and was disappointed to get a steak that was medium to medium-well. Too hungry to make a fuss and send it back. However, the other meals were all good. I tried the schnitzel with Mexican topping and that was heaped generously with delicious topping. The salad and vegie bar has tasty offerings including fresh, warm bread rolls and is popular so you may be waiting a while to get into it as you can only approach from one side. The general feeling I get is that the Blue Gums is aiming itself at a different market, yet despite all of the above, the families keep coming in droves. The place is immensely popular and has plenty of regulars. Even though I can walk to the Blue Gums from my house, I don't think I'll become one.

Reasonable costing pub food. Have been here twice recently and even though not very busy on both…read moreoccasions it seemed quite a while for the food to come out of the kitchen. The first time I was there we ordered food and drinks at the service area and told them our table number. What they didn't say is that we had to collect our own drinks from the wine service area, so we're sitting at our table for some time without realising our drinks were sitting on the bar. They serve Bleasdale sparkling red by the glass so that's a winner itself. We sat in the alcove surrounded by windows which is a pretty spot, and away from the playground entrance. I'd imagine it would be very noisy when full but for a weekday lunch very pleasant.

Everybody seems to love this place - but I feel like I'm missing something every time I go there…read more The food is average and the dining room is HUGE and I feel atmosphere-less. The ceiling is ten billion meters high and it makes it impossible to bring any life to the place. I have been there when it is quite busy, but I've also been there when we've been the second two people there, and they still sat us on the table that the other couple were sitting on when they were ordering. Awkward. The upstairs function room is very popular for birthdays and engagements, with it's own bar and all the facilities needed for photos and speeches. They host poker tournaments and karaoke, but I haven't been to see this in action. The pokies bar is always the busiest and you will see people having a smoke outside of this room at all hours of the night. When I can't think of a pub to go to, I usually end up here, but I'm pretty much always disappointed.

7 adults for a birthday dinner. We attempted to use the QT code table ordering system…read more This timed out trying to find items/ decuson making and had to start over again. Specials had to be ordered at the bar. Waited inline for 15 minutes. When asking for the roast chicken special. Was informed it was no longer available, no sign on counter to advise. Those who managed to order via the QR me&u app received their order within 30 mins. However, those that ordered at the bar didn't receive their order. After 45 minutes of waiting, we flagged down a server and was advised. 'It's probably on its way', then continued away from the kitchen to clear a table. After 10 mins, that server asked the kitchen. Then, 10 mins later, a manager attended our table and advised that the order had not been finalised due to different ordering methods, and the order will be sorted straight away. We waited another 15 mins and watched as others got their orders with the same meals, these orders weren't bumped. A member of our party went and asked for the entrees at least. Then, 5 minutes later, the food appeared. The 2nd round of drinks ordered by app appeared in different glasses, not the same volume as previous glasses. Food tasted great. I feel the staff require basic hospo training and requirements to meet the basics.

This was one of those pubs that people would always talk about, but I never got around to paying it a visit. Okay, they probably have done it up somewhat since I was much younger, but it still didn't stand out from all the other pubs that I have visited in my time. I did quite like the front bar though, which was on two levels, and the beer garden was quite nice, but I doubt I will be going back here again (though who knows, I might just do that).
