I've been to different Saphora locations with my daughter and alone. Staff is usually courteous, friendly and very helpful. Not at this location. As I wondered around the store, an associate asked me if I needed help; I said Yes and she called someone else. I wanted and needed an opinion choosing a lipstick color. That associate was uninterested, so unenthusiastic and unhelpful. Ditto when I asked about mascara and liners. All I got was her pointing at the items. Not going back there, for sure. read more

With the exception of Montgomery Mall's location (dry & unapproachable employees at the register), I've received good experience when I visit Sephora, yet this store supersedes their fellow locations. Amongst many happy salespersons, I saw Alicia who asked if I need any assistance. I told her I had a certificate to redeem & needed some direction for my WomanBaby's never ending Wish List. As we walked around, I ask & Alicia answered. Even amongst the holiday bustle, her friendliness & pleasure to assist was appreciative. The all star customer service continued upon check out, where Nadia extended me an abundance of delightful service. Since most of my purchases are online & getting a freebie most times, I inquired of the same for in store shopping. & indeed I received a few facial samples. Speaking of receiving, you can get a complimentary sample of perfume just by asking one of the sales associates. Sephora is literally next to the Friendship Heights Metro Station - Red Line, exiting the Bloomingdale's tunnel. Kudos to Gina, the store manager, she has a great team. read more

My friend & I wanted to look at fragrances so we decided to go to Sephora. We were not greeted although there was an associate "beauty advisor" in the front. I could see that she was with someone but wasn't sure if it was another beauty advisor or customer. We walked over to the Fenty section and looked at their products. My friend asked "did they greet us?" I said "no. I have a strict 'don't speak, don't buy' policy. I usually give them a couple minutes to speak before I walk out.'" She laughed but I was serious. We then went to the fragrances to smell a few new items. More customers came in and were greeted by the same advisor I figured was busy. No one ever asked if we needed help with anything although beauty advisors walked passed us on a few occasions. The only time an advisor spoke was when my friend asked about the birthday products for this month since her birthday was last week. We left the store with nothing. I was in a Sephora in Michigan not too long ago, and I sprayed myself with a perfume without really paying attention to what it was. I later received a compliment from a sales person in another store. I went home and then I really wanted it! The problem being, I was heading back to DC and I had no idea what the name of it was. Well, fate (friendship really) brought me to this Sephora. I thought maybe something would trigger my mind. Nothing. Then I saw the "Find Your Fragrance" machine on the wall. You simply tap the screen options (I chose flower scented) and, voila! There were about six option narrowed down, and my subconscious remembered it was a rectangular glass bottle. What was it? Tory Birch. Alas, it was a bit expensive so I decided to think about it. Then my super helpful sales person (Sandra?), made me a sample to take home! Yay! However, as I was browsing I discovered a rack with small sized roller perfumes for around $22.00. Tory Birch was one of them! It's purse sized. How convenient! I love this store. Now that I am a Beauty Insider here it is my duty to contribute a small portion of my paycheck here every so often. They will validate your parking for one hour. Nice! read more

This is my new fave Sephora! I had been in search of Ever Matte primer, but so many of the Sephoras were out. Luckily, this one had it in stock! Brittney was my lovely sales associate today--she was so friendly and knowledgeable! Britney's brows were FLEEKY!! So this prompted me to ask her about the best way to brows. Y'all, she changed my LIFE! She demo'ed how to do them correctly, and I left with another product :) good business! I only gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because when I first walked in, no one greeted me and I awkwardly waited behind this sales associate with locks who didn't even acknowledge me as I waited for her to finish with another customer. Chevy Chase Sephora, Wow did I have a bad experience today. Which is sad because I shop there often and today takes away any good experience I had. This morning I woke up realizing I ran out of foundation so during my lunch break I came across the street to get a new one. I have been using Marc Jacobs Youthful for the past three purchases and realized I needed something a little bit more full coverage for the humid summer DC weather as it was not staying on my skin. I went through a line of questions asking what additional products I use (all products I buy from sephora from Primer, to moisturizer, to setting spray. The girl who was helping me then suggested makeup and applied it to my face - it was light coverage so I asked if I could try Fenty and Kat Von D recommendations from my friends and she said that will never work for you because of your skin being dry and damaged. She continued to apply more layers, there was a clear makeup line on my face and my pores have never appeared larger. I was startled at my appearance. The employee then proceeded to state that no foundation could fix the appearance of my skin as it is just damaged and bad. (Let me know if you would like me to include images of my skin as I do not even have acne or visible pores with or without makeup on my face) I stared speechless and she did nit speak another word. I thanked her and left the store mortified. I left the store embarrassed and makeup less. I trust Sephora, but after this I honestly am stuck feeling mortified and stuck with visiting Mac next door. As someone who has a lot of confidence in my appearance natural and made up todays experience left me feeling bad about myself and in low spirits. No woman should have her confidence taken away. I am fearful for future customers to have this happen to them. Been a Sephora customer for many years. I would say my experience there this week was the worst "customer service " I have had in any store. The "advisor" at the register was unnecessarily confrontational, in so many words told me that I was the cause of the product defect. She was visibly and verbally upset with me as I was matter of factly asking for clarification on the new return policy. "We are trained to look for 'over -use' of a product'" she accusingly told me. The attitude was unwarranted & unprofessional. I will not shop here again. read more

This is a clean store with a good selection. I was not initially greeted, but when I asked about some products the woman working was very friendly. This was fine with me because I like to shop without a salesperson pushing product. But someone else might feel ignored? I think it's difficult for salespeople in these types of stores to balance good customer service, without seeming like they are being pushy. read more

My new favorite Sephora! I typically frequent the one at Montgomery Mall, but after visiting here that won't be happening as often :P I spent days looking for a specific lip color and boom, found everything I needed plus more in one visit at this location. You have no idea how wonderful that is. The staff is incredibly helpful (taking product requests over the phone), even offering a few tips later in the store. Other locations won't even hold products for a day, claiming that it could be given to someone else at their request (provided that they were in the store). At least these ladies were nice. Especially the sweetheart who recommended I use eyeliner for lipliner (unconventional lip colors are harder to match). Anywho, the shopping experience itself was far more pleasurable than most. This is my favorite Sephora in the area because it's never a packed, hot mess like the ones in malls. On my most recent visit, I arrived promptly at 10 a.m. and since I was the only customer in the store, no less than 3 associates asked me if I needed help. I was a little bummed because I checked online the night before to see if the 3 items I wanted were in stock and they all were but when I got there, one was not. Luckily it was only a makeup bag not the skincare products I was itching to try. But my VIB birthday gift was in stock so yay! This staff is so attentive and delightful. When I went in the ladies checked in with me to see what I needed. They didn't carry the product I was looking for but they ordered it for me (the shipping fee is waived when you order in store) and provided a fee free samples. I was in this Sephora about 20 minutes ago. The WORST Sephora experience I have ever had in the last 10 years of shopping at Sephora. The "Beauty Advisor" at the register was a complete you know what. I asked a simple question when she asked to see my ID because I have never had to show my ID when shopping at Sephora so I asked when did it start. She goes on to be extremely rude back saying it has always been a policy at Sephora. Now I know your lying I said I was in the store a month ago and I just spent money there maybe a month ago and they didn't ask me for my ID. Hmmm after I said that it is up to the discretion of the "Beauty Advisor" to ask for it. Again very rudely. Safe to say I won't be going back to that particular Sephora ever again. Too early to be rude to ppl who are spending $100 in your store. The fact of the matter is don't get offensive because I asked a question. Don't dish out what you can't take back. At the end of the day I am a paying customer just answer the question and move on. I'd give it a negative star if I could. All in all make sure you bring your ID just in case you run across the Sephora police like myself. read more

Yup - they gotta sort out the service thing. I stood in line for a long time today while there was only one salesperson at the register tending to a customer. Other salespeople answered random questions from customers every now and then, but I guess not everyone is trained on the other three registers... That's me giving them the benefit of the doubt. When I finally made it to the register, the salesperson was polite, happy, and helpful with my return. This Sephora was a dream to visit compared to the one I was at yesterday at "The Mall". What a crowded nightmare! Still, they have such cool stuff! Hair products designed at MIT, perfume, OPI nail polish for Sephora, which for some reason makes it oodles cheaper than at CVS... Fiber wig mascara... and cute little kits that include everything necessary to give yourself a "smoky eye"... including step by step instructions... There's even one that talks to you about it when you push a button. Ah technology, you make us all so beautiful. read more

Who can never get enough of makeup, beauty tip and new product?? This girl. I may not have told you this before, but I'm a beauty junky and Sephora is one of my main suppliers. I walked in to the facility and was immediately greeted (Noted, and thank you gurl!) and asked about my needs. I'm a very hard color to match for foundation (every since I had the bright idea to switch from MAC it's been a problem) and was on the look out for new supply. I was handed over to a seasoned vet. She new my issues before I mentioned them (Carrisa). She was patient and knowledgable, I can't say that for most people who have to deal with me. She found an excellent makeup brand for me, unfortunately the wrong color, but I expected this. She gave me tips on how to apply that particular make up brand and told me what I should use under it, so I wouldn't be an oily mess hours after application. I had a good experience and will be excited to return and talk to Carrisa about new products. read more

I arrived for the Grand Opening and it was gorgeous--everything was clean and immaculate. The staff was excited to open for us and very attentive. The first 100 folks received a Sephora bag and gift card ranging from $10-$100. I thought it was kind when the staff started handing out the bags and gift cards about 20 minutes to opening time so we didn't have to remain standing outside in the rain. They also put a few containers out so we didn't have to carry our umbrellas while walking through the store. As an upper NW resident, I'm excited that this store opened in this location (Metro accessible and where the old Hecht's use to be) because it became a hassle to have to go all the way to Georgetown. This store is one story and of course may not contain all the brands that you may be accustomed to--as I heard a nice staff person answer one's inquiry about a brand. Brands that I did notice were Bare Escentuals, Bliss, Carol's Daughter, Fresh, and the list can go on. If you're in the neighborhood or need a metro accessible Sephora, this is the place! I called and made a reservation on Tuesday for a full makeover on Friday afternoon at 4:00. It was quick and easy to schedule and the lady on the phone informed me that there was a minimum $50 purchase required for the full makeover which I was ok with. I get to Sephora right at 4 on Friday and walk up to the check out counter to let someone know I had the appt. I thought it was odd that they didn't even ask my name or inform me again of the $50 purchase, they just made we wait a couple minutes for the makeup artist to finish up with her other client and then they sat me. Carissa was the makeup artist and she did a phenomenal job! She asked if there was an occasion and what kind of look I was going for that night. I was invited to my friend's work winter social (dressy attire) so I told her I just wanted a nice natural or glowy look with a smokey eye. I showed her a picture of my black and white dress and she immediately had an idea of what she wanted to do. Carissa was so nice and I felt like she was really taking the time finding the right products for my face. She did some conturing on my face and throughout the appt. other Sephora employees kept walking up to watch her technique and see how it was going, which made me feel my face was in the right hands. My light brown smokey eye turned out great and she finished off by applying a soft/lighter shade of red lipstick on my lips. I ended up just buying a $50 giftcard at the end because I had to hurry back to finish getting ready and didn't have time to shop around. Online they said appointments take 45 min., but my ended up being about an hour long which was fine! I got alot of compliments that night and in the end I thought it was worth it to try for the experience! Great job Carissa!! read more

These folks must have read the reviews, because they have their act together. I go to Sephora for one item and one item only - I'm not interested in the endless products, the mirrors, the small expensive jars of serum with their promises of endless youth. All I want is my hair gel. And these folks always, always stock it (and today, when it wasn't on the shelf, the saleswoman happily went to the stockroom and found it for me). Every experience I've had here has been painless, quick, easy, and friendly. It's true that they always seem shocked when I tell them I have no interest in anything shiny, shimmery, glittery, or fancy -- but that's fine. Extra points for validated parking. read more

My own standard for initially judging glam-tastic hothouses of beauty a la Sephora, MAC is to look at the faces and makeup jobs of the sales associates. Do they resemble the Bride of Frankenstein, or Lady Gaga? Do their eyebrows form a right angle? Do they smell like a strip club's (un)dressing room? Walking into the Chevy Chase Sephora puts me at ease because these ladies (and the occasional gentleman) look nice, and normal. (Yup, I'm talking to you, MAC). They use the products and are very knowledgeable about them. They are generous with smiles, samples, and offers of assistance without hovering too much. I've never gotten any attitude here whatsoever. The store is bright, clean, and well-organized. My only complaint is that checkout service can be on the slow side, often because the staff can get super chatty with the customer they're helping at the register. But it's pretty hard to hate on that, when they're just being courteous and friendly. I think this might be the area's best Sephora. read more

OK, call it a 3 if you average my experiences, but I'm writing based on my last visit during which I discovered the Sephora Rule of Customer Clerk Ratios. Apparently it works like this: If you walk into a Sephora when it is busy, a clerk will greet you right away. If you walk into a Sephora when there are few customers and plenty of free clerks, good luck getting help. I eventually got someone to tell me the product I wanted was only available online. Later discovered I could have ordered it from the store. But that was after: 1. I'd been given a list of approximately 50 foundations that supposedly match my skin colour (ha ha ha ha ha) and left to fend for myself; and 2. I said "Screw it" and did what I should have done in the first place, which was go to MAC. However, if you know what you want or just want to look at cosmetics etc, it's a great place to go. If you time it right, you won't even have to speak to a clerk. read more

I had an awesome experience here, they have a really friendly staff. I was greeted by 3 different people within 5 minutes of me entering the store offering assistance and they were rather busy. I went into play with some lipstick and one girl notice I applied my lip liner incorrectly. She started to help me but her manager told her to clock out so she found someone else to help me. I really appreciated that because most people avoid starting a new project once it's close to their time to leave. I was showed how to properly apply my liner and left to sample some more. No one was pushy and helpful when I asked questions even though it was clear I wasn't going to make a purchase. This is my new favorite Sephora location! Love this location because I can get in and out quickly. The parking is descent even though you have to pay for it, you can always find a space on the weekdays and weekends (depending on time). Antoinette at the Chevy Chase, Maryland Sephora location was extremely helpful and friendly. As I am a novice when it comes to applying makeup, I decided to get a consultation on how to put on makeup. Upon my arrival, Antoinette greeted me at the cashier and also walked me to the Makeup Station. She was very friendly and had a great sense of humor. She taught me techniques and offered me great advice on how to apply my makeup. She made a lot of great recommendations on which brands to use, depending on whether I needed blush, mascara, eyeliner, etc. I felt very confident in her consultation and will definitely schedule an appointment with her. She was also very patient as I was trying to decide which lip stick to wear on my wedding day and she helped make sure that I found the right color. She also showed me some perfumes and offered me a sample of this wonderful new Gucci perfume that was recently released. I honestly think this was the best shopping experience I have had in a long time. Antoinette had the right balance of advising and recommending various products without being pushy like some sales people can be. I will definitely come back and set up a consultation with her. As I have not gotten my makeup done or purchased name brand cosmetics since my high school prom 14 years ago I was surprised at how enjoyable the experience was. Antoinette was awesome! read more

I visited Sephora for the first time to use a birthday gift card. Two associates greeted me, one asked what brought me in, and then she promptly said it was time for her break! Another associate, Stefanie, came over. I told her I was looking for a concealer stick and also interested in the entire Sephora make up line since a friend had recommended the store brand. Stefanie said she had never tried the Sephora line (!!!) before and did not seem very knowledgeable; I was shocked by it. I asked twice for samples from the Sephora line to take home. Stefanie never gave me any. So I asked another associate for samples. She called Stefanie back over to give them to me. I had to ask once more for a third time for the samples, before Stefanie finally gave me a tube of two Sephora foundations and a primer. This second interaction, Stefanie finally offered the ID Foundation pictures as well. But overall I found Stefanie to be pretty rude and not knowledgeable about the products. I wanted a Sephora brand lip gloss that was out of stock. Stefanie did offer to order it online, but it was not available there either. My first visit at Sephora will likely sway me to continue shopping at MAC. This customer service experience was not top notch. read more

The sales girls who work here are very knowledgeable and nice .they seem to know their stuff as oppose to the people I see working most of the time at the Montgomery mall location where they act like there giving you a piece of gold when you ask for a sample. There's a parking lot underground ,and only Whole Foods validates when u buy something which I normally do. read more

I just had a rude encounter with an employee at Sephora. I looked up a hair care product online and saw that they carried it at the local Sephora and that it was in stock. I went in and asked for it. The employee I asked told me there was no such product. I insisted I had seen it online and that they did carry it, but she persisted and told me she had never heard of it. I finally got within earshot of another employee who informed us, that they did sell it and showed us where it was. The employee said "there it is" and waltzed away. She should have apologized and helped me, instead she went off to talk to a friend. I will buy this product online from Amazon next time. Yeah, the store may be shiny and new, but the salespeople SUCK. there aren't enough four-letter words to describe my experience here today. What should've been a 5 minute errand for mascara became a borderline humiliating 20 minute experience. I have never walked into ANY Sephora and not been greeted within the first few minutes. Then after I grabbed my Bad Gal and walked up to the register, no one was there. Ok...must be busy. Two salesgirls were helping other customers, but it wasn't constant help...more like intermittent help. I know, sounds weird, I guess you had to be there. Anyway I was standing by the register for a good 15 minutes and neither of them said a word to me. Finally, the customer being helped by the salesgirl w/the horrible blue eye shadow came to the register to pay. Then she had enough points to get a "prize"....then she got a birthday gift. It was truthfully painful watching her and the salesgirl discuss which one was better. WHO CARES!?!? At that point, there was a huge line....and I was next in line. To my surprise, the other salesgirl, who was suddenly idle, came right up to the guy behind me to ask if he needed something. He's like um I just want to like BUY these....I'm like YEAH ME TOO I've been waiting for like 20 minutes. She's like well we're a little tight today. I'm like well if you see a customer waiting by the register you can at least acknowlege them and say I'll be right with you. She said she wasn't aware I was waiting to check out! WTF do you do at a register?!?!?! I'm like well I certainly wasn't standing there for my health. UGH. DUMB B%$#@. I'd rather go to Georgetown than step foot in this rude-ass excuse for a Sephora. Definitely the only Sephora I'll shop at now (other than online!). The staff is so so friendly and not at all annoyed when you ask questions. They recommended plenty of products without pushing them and were very informative. The sales staff who helped me were also happy to test colors and shades on me when I was trying to find a new foundation--overall, I'm definitely doing all of my shopping at this location now. read more

It's such a bummer that people have such negative reviews about this place. I will give them that you NEVER EVER get greeted in this store, and it takes them a lifetime to approach you before you get service, and it's kinda irksome. I must have strolled around 2/3 of the store before somebody approached me. But once Carolyn came to say 'hi' and to check to see if I needed anything, all was better. She was very gentle with me, and understanding of the pitiful state of my grad student wallet. She said that she was mostly a skincare expert, but that she could help me with my questions on eyeliner as well. She gave me a quick demo after I tried out a couple of colors, and then - guess what?! SHE HAD ME PUT IT ON MYSELF. While some people may feel that you should get full service at a makeup counter/store, I thought this was genius. She guided me through the process of trying on the eyeliner myself, and I walked out with an eye crayon from the house brand, feeling like I could put it on myself at home. She's awesome, go see her for skincare. Carolyn was the perfect combination of both gentle and pushy - sales people need a bit of pushy (god knows I know), and she had the perfect touch. I'm sure she would be awesome at skincare as well; I know I'll be back to see her if I win one of their giftcards! Otherwise, this is a standard Sephora, but because it's not in a brick and mortar mall, it doesn't have 10 thousand teenagers and their moms roaming around trying to either a) steal everything in sight, or b) be extra loud.
