I got attention, but the repercussions were not good, and it all stunk - the attention, the creation, the repercussions and the demands. But still, even after all these years, I've thought about doing it again. A new shop recently opened in Cary that took me back to those days. Escentuelle is a studio where anyone, working with the owner/professional perfumer, can create a custom scent. Although I didn't take that step, I spent a few moments speaking with Carolyn as she gave me an overview of the process, how she started in this uncommon business and the types of base fragrances that start things off. Some are essential oils, others are not, but for all, the fragrance notes once isolated, give a new perspective on the previously-thought ordinary. Because she had an upcoming booking, and her studio was set up for that, I had a preview and brief summary of what was in store for her group. It's part chemistry and part aromatherapy. Once the scent is created, a process that begins by picking a core scent and then gradually layering through to the top note, you can reorder it. There are some ready-made custom scents available if you don't have the time. Nevertheless, ninety minutes of time to get a unique fragrance seems like a reasonable trade off.

However, I feel compelled to share my disappointment after experiencing what I believe was discriminatory treatment during two separate visits to this location. On my first visit, the cashier barely acknowledged me. The only thing she said was, I can take you here. There was no greeting, no conversation, and no thank you. After my transaction, I stayed for a moment and observed her warmly greeting the customers behind me with smiles, friendly conversation, and a much more welcoming attitude. Unfortunately, the same thing happened again on a later visit with different employees. I was overlooked while customers behind me, who were a different race than I am, were helped first. During checkout, I was handed my receipt without a thank you or any other courtesy. At the same time, another cashier offered the customers next to me the opportunity to apply for an Ulta credit card, but I was never asked, despite the customers before me being offered the same promotion. After experiencing this twice with different employees, I left feeling that I was treated differently because of my race. Every customer deserves to be acknowledged, treated with respect, and offered the same level of service and promotions, regardless of their background. This experience was deeply disappointing, and because of it, I will not be returning to this Ulta location. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and ensures that every customer receives the same respectful and welcoming experience.
