Trula and Neil are helpful, thoughtful and generally awesome business owners. My wife and I had a very particular job we needed taken care of and they came through for us creatively, logistically, and ultimately with very high quality work. This wasn't a simple project, but they experimented until it was just right, and once the presses started running, things were wrapped up quick as a wink. Neil is a zen master printer - this guy towers over others in the industry. I have seen his work and it is stupendous, and of course he works with the Museum of Art and History, but I had a highly specific job that needed extreme attention to detail (which was both art and history coincidentally). I was making an exact replica deck of the ORIGINAL tarot cards from London in 1909/1910 as a special gift for my research team and as an educational tool for a few of my favorite students. **This was a PitA job** that required several revisions, proofs, spot checks, and specialty paper. There was no room for error here, as I had a limited budget and only one chance to get this done right. Neil and Trula fell in love with this project and made me feel as if they were putting the entirety of their expertise and experience into it. The result was the finest recreation ever made of these decks, and the first time in just over 100 years that people could hold a "new" deck in their hands. The decks we used as a source are ancient and worn by a hundred years of use. It was doubtful we could recreate this deck, but Neil and Trula pulled it off. You can go see the deck at their shop if you need proof. At every major progress point Trula or Neil sent me an email or called me to let me know that I could come see the results and give them feedback before proceeding. We went through several rounds of this and the results were astounding. I am quite literally stunned at how well these cards came out, and the handful of people I have gifted them to have written to tell me how they have fallen in love their new decks. It is more than just ink on paper with Sentinel Printers. It is about technique (web, offset, digital, letterpress), something called dot-gain, ink bleed, the texture of the paper and the vibrancy of the colors. Every detail is taken into account when you work with Neil and Trula. They think of all of this stuff for you as they create your print job. In case you didn't know, Sentinel Printers is as old as Santa Cruz itself and was originally a part of our newspaper. There literally is no other printer in our town that can stand up to over 150 years of continual operation and expertise handed down generation to generation (sorry other printers). If you want cheap, go to Staples or FedEx Office (I do!). If you need something done RIGHT you really need to go here. You just won't get this kind of personal attention and hard work anywhere else. THAT is why our museum (and First Fridays) works with these guys; they could go anywhere. By the way, just so we are clear - I did not get any discount or perk for writing this. I am not a friend or relative of anyone at Sentinel Printers. But I am so impressed with their work I will be back again (the next time I have a big project). Anyway, thanks for reading this. Well, I generally love supporting local businesses. especially ones that look as cool as Sentinel, and do such high quality work, which they do. Unfortunately, although their print skills look very impressive, their project management skills are right down crappy. I asked them for a quote. I waited three business days. Then it turned out, when I called, that they forgot to ask me a question, so couldn't process my quote (couldn't be bothered to call...I guess my business is not important to them). And then, when i said that I really needed it the following day, and if they could maybe make up for their mistake by rushing the order, they said they couldn't be bothered, and basically hung up on me. I know I'm a small business. But that's no reason to ignore me. read more
