    Pistol range
    Bruce K.

This pistol range is in a neighborhood that has a very sketchy feel to it. A very warehouse/industrial district. I'm glad that I was armed. Inside, the facility is pretty basic though they do have pistols and long guns for sale as well as ammo and other firearm accessories. The highlight here is the pistol range and they do have eyes/ears available for those that don't have them. The noise on the range was pretty intense as it seems like they don't have as much noise baffling as would be comfortable. The steel walls and steel pistol bay sure didn't help. As well, the ear protection I borrowed probably wasn't the best choice for this type of noise. But it's a gun range and they have decent bays with enough room to spread out your weapon and reload as needed. Simply put your target (you get one free with your range time) in the clips, send it downrange and fire when ready. I like that I didn't have to sweep up brass - just brush it forward and they'll get it all later.

This is my favorite range in town. It might not be the glitziest, fanciest place. In fact, I'll go ahead and let you know that it doesn't come close to being fancy. But, it is what I feel a good indoor range should be: wood paneled, filled with super-knowledgeable gun nuts, and constantly seeing the ebb and flow of patrons. Sure, it's in a bit of a sketchy location. And yes, you'll see a VERY diverse range (pun, hehe) of folks. Perhaps you'll witness a group of huge dudes shooting massive guns at rapid speed and have your adrenaline levels skyrocket. But that's all part of the gun range experience (and why safety googles and ear protection are required). I took an NRA class here and then got to shoot the best gun ever: a competition revolver with quite the trigger job. That thing was fast, accurate and, well, maybe my newest crush. Our instructor and his wife were helpful with everything from determining a plan for home intrusion to explaining the gun laws in Alabama and how they change if you drive out of state (good to know if you have a piece in the glove compartment). They even sold me the cutest little stun gun- it is pink, produces 400,000 volts of "don't touch me you criminal", and is called "The Hottie." Once, during a jaunt here with my dad to try out the newest in our collection of handguns, I decided to practice with the Osama Bin Laden target. After punching out his heart, I had one shot left. Realizing at that moment I was the only female within a mile of the place, and that I happened to be dressed up from going to a meeting (dresses, heals and makeup aren't my MO for shooting), I began to feel the eyes on me. So, I aimed, took a deep breath in, and fired my last bullet right through ol' Osama's forehead. The whole room erupted in hoots, hollers and applause- I even got a few high fives. So yes, Yay! I AM a fan.

Ok first will preface this place is a little out of the way…read more.. So last year we came to F.O.P for the first time, they have a public pistol and riffle range that anyone can shoot after they sign the waiver and pay 20 bucks..... so we did that last year.... the family membership is 225.00 per year for your family to shoot the member only ranges... we had waited almost a year to come back because it is a bit out of the way and we have been busy. We took our neighbors this time and actually went on the members only portions of the range... the steel target range was fun and everything hing worked well... then we went to the riffle range to fire off a hundred or so 5.56 rounds thru the AR... folks in this range are more serious about their firearms as the folks that were here were competition shooters and gun builders. Still great group of folks... I will say we need to use our membership more often and will renew for sure. As there are limited amount of memberships sold to prevent over crowding... All in all come out and have some fun, they also rent guns, sell ammo and drinks, t shirts and other gun related stuff... Keep up the good work F.O.P!!

If you're looking for a range in Alabama, I'd recommend going somewhere else. They still require a…read moreCCW permit to join, even though Alabama went full constitutional carry back in 2023. The state law clearly says no permit is needed to carry concealed anymore, but this place is sticking to the old requirement just to be extra gate keepey about 2A. It's their private property, so they can set their own rules I understand that. But the part that really stands out is how they deny ACTIVE DUTY SERVICE members if they don't have a CCW. Let get real these are the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect and defend the Constitution, including the Second Amendment. And yet they're being told they need a government issued permission slip just to shoot at this range BWAHAHAHA. That feels completely backwards and disrespectful to those who serve. Most folks aren't going to go through the extra steps classes, fees, paperwork, fingerprints, photos, and waiting periods when the state already says you're good to go without any of it. If you want a background check just run every member though any of the 1000 background check sites. It ends up just being straight gatekeeping, limiting access to only those who already got the government's approval. CCW permits have ALWAYS been unconstitutional because the Second Amendment protects the right to bear arms without needing government permission slips it's a fundamental right, not a privilege granted by the state. Big miss for this range It's disappointing to see a place that's supposed to be pro-gun still doing this in 2026 Alabama, especially when it affects active duty members who just want to go enjoy their rights. If you're looking for a no-hassle spot with better vibes, try the Talladega range, Sentinals, or Hoover Tactical if you need a rifle range and if you are lucky just shoot at a friend's place if you know anyone with land no CCW anti 2a Drama. This one gets a 0/10 from me. Save your time and go elsewhere.

I took my son to the range to shoot today. As we approached the counter, one of the young men…read morebehind the counter asked what caliber rifle we were going to be firing, and I told him. He asked to see the rounds we were going to be firing, and I obliged, and gave him the five 30- round magazines of ammo we brought. I understand that confirmation is needed to make sure we didn't bring the wrong type of ammo to an indoor range. He immediately snapped at me "don't ever bring loaded magazines like this again". I understand that Hoover Tactical has policies, but I wasn't crazy about the idea of his tone and the fact he was talking to me this way in the presence of my son as I'm being a compliant customer. The man behind the counter emptied all of the magazines in a plastic tray. Again, I have no problem with this. As he was emptying the second magazine, he said "IM GLAD I CHECKED BECAUSE HE HAS ARMOR PIERCING ROUNDS!" He said this where there was no way that the others in line didn't hear it. I tried to tell him that none of the rounds I brought were armor piercing. I told him that I bought the rounds at palmetto state. He replied in a loud and arrogant tone "I don't care where you bought them!" I decided the best thing I could do was to let him conclude whatever he wanted to conclude. A few minutes later I heard him say very quietly "maybe they're alright". After he had unloaded the five 30 round magazines, I went to get the ammo and magazines from the counter. He said "Sorry I had to take them all out, not sorry for you, sorry for me". My line of work, I have to train with firearms. As a matter of fact, my employer has a contract with Hoover Tactical. It's a very convenient location for me as I live about a mile and a half away. But I don't patronize businesses that don't treat me like a customer. I hate leaving bad reviews, but I felt it was my responsibility to report the treatment my son and I received. It was unnecessary.

We started to fill out the liability waiver and I asked about ammo. I purposefully didn't bring ammo because I wanted to support the business by purchasing their ammo. I was told they were completely out of ammo and that I could find some at Marks outdoors down the road. Then I was told that the pistol range was closed so we would be using our pistols next to all of the rifles. The folks behind us were two young kids with an AK. I wasn't too happy to be sharing the range with these young kids and their AK. I wanted to brush up on some things with my wife so she would still be comfortable with the pistol we bought for her. So without ammo we left and headed to marks outdoors. As I was in the ammo section of marks explaining to the ammo attendant our situation, a random person next to me said that he always gets a mini draco inadvertently waved at him by some untrained young kids. So this would be 0 stars but u give it 1 because the folks at the front counter were very nice and they did tell me where to find ammo. We didn't bother shooting there today and I'll probably never go back unless I hear the safety requirements are being policed far more stringently. Too bad this is the only indoor range around...
