My dad was well taken care of staff were super friendly and I highly recommend this retirement home. My dad was in such bad shape, the Clare even assigned 4 caregivers and PT staff to give him 1 on 1 attention. They sat with him to discuss everything from his life stories etc.. My family.are deeply indebted for the kind and generosity they have shown. They even comped us 4 days free because our insurance only covered so many days. I met Amy the case manager to tour the facility and discuss what my mother had been through and the level of care she required. I was told the Clare was more than capable of handling her needs however that was a blatant lie. This is NOT an adequate rehabilitation facility for post hospitalization patients. The staff is under trained, under qualified and under staffed. I was incredibly clear on my mothers condition and the level of patience and care needed to keep her comfortable. Not only did they not respect our wishes; they did the exact opposite. They bullied my mother and when she asked them to please be more gentle with her and to stop hurting her she was told if she didn't like their treatment she could go back to the hospital. They also told her she needed to leave because they were incapable of helping her. NONE of this was communicated to me directly. When I called to speak to the nurse on duty I was told that the doctor recommend she go to the hospital because their staff could not manage her care. This is the same doctor who couldn't be bothered to actually see her in person and only met with her for 5 minutes on the first day and was not seen or heard from again. I can not stress enough just how INADEQUATE, UNDER TRAINED AND INCAPABLE this staff was. No one seemed to know what they were doing or even cared about the residents. This place is dirty and not well managed. If you have a loved one who needs any sort of care that extends beyond the bare minimum DO NOT SEND THEM HERE.

Everything went perfect, I highly recommend them. My caregiver was right on time, took immediate charge from surgical recovery area, getting instructions from surgery nursing staff, to our transpiration back to my home. She was wonderful, very personable and polite and caring, was almost like having a good friend there with you and accompanying you home. The doctor is almost never there and the nursing care can be very erratic. I can say that everyone, especially the admissions person, works extremely hard. These are tough jobs and people are here because they need help. That said, the administration is extremely young. I think they mean well, but there is a lack of consistency and communication. If you have a loved one staying here, you really need to stay on top of things and be a squeaky wheel, otherwise, certain things can fall through the cracks. Also, transportation off-site is not well managed. You should plan on making your own arrangements. Most people are friendly and helpful. But you do need to be proactive and ask for what you need. The accommodations are pretty nice and of course, the location is great. Food is also very decent.

A friend was confined for a number of weeks. He needed assistance to get to the restroom or use the bedpan. At night, the message light was practically meaningless. Having an urgent need, a response might come hours later. On occasion, an aide would say they were taking a break and walk away from the request for assistance. There was no valuable input (diagnosis) from doctors. Requests for information were ignored. On one occasion, visiting, I saw an employee wearing a hoodie. It's script? IDK - IDC - IDGF. Truth in advertising?

I'm not sure what parameters U.S. News and World Report used to arrive at their ranking. My stay at Shirley Ryan was not what I expected. It was frequently unpleasant and very stressful. I knew that their physical therapy and occupational therapy staff were supposed to be top-notch, and they are. It's the support staff services (nurses, techs) that can be dramatically improved. I was at Shirley Ryan approximately 1 month after spending 3 months at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. I frequently encountered rude and sometimes incompetent/untrained nurses and techs. I did not always get the same staff assigned, so I experienced several nurses and techs. Sadly, I rarely had staff assigned who did a great job and truly seemed to care about my recovery. The others appeared to see me as just a task they had to complete as part of their job, which they did not seem to like. My daily housekeeping staff was more pleasant than many of my nurse/tech caregivers. I'll refrain from naming those I consider the worst of the bunch. Just keep in mind that you'll likely encounter inconsistent and poor care from some of the Shirley Ryan nurses and techs. If so, don't hesitate to speak up to management (Charge Nurse, etc.) should you experience inadequate care.
