Hobby Lobby - Sweater weather?? In April!!

    Hobby Lobby

My very first visit to a Hobby Lobby ever happened last month when my mom and I decided to drive…read moreout simply because I wanted to check it out. My mom seems to shop here somewhat often but now that I know, I'll be honest: I don't love the overt Christian branding and that alone will never make this store my first choice. That said, I can't deny the variety they offer. No matter what craft you're into whether it be sewing, quilting, painting, home decor, seasonal projects, etc. Hobby Lobby seems to have just about everything imaginable under one roof even if it may be extremely challenging to find/the layout of the store wasn't great... While I'd prefer to shop elsewhere when possible, I can see myself returning if I'm in a pinch or need something specific. I can admit it's a convenient option. Three stars for selection and convenience with some hesitation on the overall vibes and prices.

Hobby Lobby: Come for one frame, leave with fall exploding in your trunk. THAT should be their…read moredadgum slogan! Let me be clear: I'm not what you'd call a crafter. In my head, sure--I'm out here crocheting whimsical potholders and making my own scented candles like some kind of Pinterest sorceress. In reality? I want to wake up with the skillset of a seasoned maker without ever enduring the YouTube tutorial struggle. I don't want to learn to crochet--I just want to already know, you feel me? But none of that stops me from wandering the aisles of Hobby Lobby like I belong there. Because baby, I do. I may not be gluing rhinestones to wreaths, but when it comes to home decor? This is my Super Bowl. No matter the style, no matter the season--modern farmhouse, vintage cottagecore, "my house looks like an antique shop and I love it" chic--Hobby Lobby always delivers. Fall? They've got pumpkins in every size and personality. Christmas? Don't even get me started unless you want to hear me wax poetic about artificial garland and buffalo plaid. Need a random decorative sign that says "Gather" in cursive? Oh honey, they have seven. And I will consider them all. (Who am I kidding: I already own all seven!) Walking into Hobby Lobby is like entering a magical vortex where time doesn't exist and your cart fills itself. I always leave with twice as many items and zero regrets. And while I may not craft, I absolutely curate vibes--and Hobby Lobby is my go-to for all things "seasonal personality disorder but make it stylish." Five stars. Ten stars. A whole galaxy of stars. And a cart full of throw pillows.

Art Yard Studio - Such a cute little building. We had so much fun!

The studio space is tidy, small but efficient for 8-10 people, with a section for potter's wheels,…read morea slop sink, storage shelving, a separate room for the kilns, and two butcher block work areas for slab creations or glazing. I was given classes at ArtYard as a gift several times, and each time by the end of the session, I vowed not to return. Have you ever experienced waiting in line somewhere while the associate chit chats with others, like you're not even there? You might have a question, but you're stuck, waiting, until they're good and ready to address you? And your inquiry is even brief, but you must wait? This is what it feels like taking a "class" at ArtYard - it's really more like you're renting the studio space for six weeks, which if you had acquired the necessary skills would be fine. I expected an attentive teacher walking around offering encouragement, tips and advice to students, and rooting them on, like the substitute that was there once, he was amazing! However, you must simply wait for a break in the conversation, say please, and not chew gum in class if you'd like help. Or to keep from idling, ask another student for help. One can be talented at what they do, but not have the heart of a teacher. (And yes, I understand that there is a certain amount of trial and error to creating art such as pottery: figuring things out, making your own mistakes, trying, trying again. I get that. I am a designer for a living.) Contacting the instructor - via phone, email or text - was unpredictable, you may or may not get a response. Sadly, I got to the point where I could take "the attitude" no longer: frustrated, upset, and humiliated, I walked out of the second class, and didn't return. And no one with the heart of a teacher would allow that to go unnoticed. But they did.

I wanted to love this place. The shop owner is very friendly and easy going. I had a couple…read moreconcerns at first and I should have gone with my gut. First, there is a cat walking around the shop. For framing, I imagine one would want a cleaner environment. Second, when I showed her the poster and she set it down, the surface she set it on did not look clean and I was worried my poster would get dirty. She pulled down frame samples and set them next to the picture. The colors of the artwork were a bit unusual so matching them was challenging. I asked if I could take down some samples and she had no problem with that, which was nice. In the end, we both agreed one I chose was the best fit. She asked if I needed it in less than two weeks and I said no. She gave me the option of paying half or all. I paid for all of it. Three weeks later, I called to check on my poster. She said she had been meaning to call me, that it was ready. I went to the shop the next day to pick it up. I looked it over and there was a red fuzz under the glass, right in the center under the text at the lower part of the gray and white poster. I pointed it out. She asked if I had a minute. She took a razor blade and cut open the back which had been sealed shut with one solid piece of paper. She pulled out the nails, and swiped a turkey feather under the glass until it was out. She then mentioned she is usually looking for cat hair. New nail holes were put in the wood frame and double sided tape was used to seal the not sliced paper back up. I was mildly displeased but when she said, "That should keep the dust and bugs out" I became distressed. Clearly having a solid back sealed shut is important. I had been so excited to present this gift but now I had a heavy heart. I had to wait a few hours to unveil it because I didn't want my upset to ruin the gift-giving moment. So there you have it. It pains me to write this review because I did want to love this quirky place and if this wasn't the second review, I'd probably give 2 stars. I'm not sure if I should have asked to have the entire back re-papered but I wish she had offered. There are lots of beautiful things in the shop, shadow boxes and other stuff. I'm sure lots of people had great results, but this was my experience.
