The smell as you pass a chippy is enough to draw in all but those with the ultimate power of will, and this is completely the case with the Battered Cod. It opens early in the morning and serves fried breakfasts, coffees and tea-cakes to those shopping in town, and at some point in the day, the fryers come on and more traditional 'chippy fayre' is on offer. I commend the quality of this whole-heartedly; a portion of fish, chips, mushy-peas and gravy from here is as good as anywhere in the Manchester area, and whilst no more 'fresh from the sea' than anywhere else this far from the coast, the food is high quality, high-value, filling, and refreshingly british. Just don't have it for every meal!

Though admittedly it doesn't have a cool interior like Fish Bait in West Didsbury (http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/fish-bait-fish-bar-manchester), they resemble the ever-so-British chippy of slightly worn counter tops and plastic chairs. There's plenty of seating in there if you wanted to eat in. My order came to £6, which seemed reasonable given the size of the fish and the portion of chips. And the verdict was, well, A-OK - the fish's batter was light and crispy, the fish itself was tender (if fish can be 'tender'...) and the chips were really good, especially the ones smothered in curry sauce. I spoken to them on the phone to ask about the chips being gluten free, she told me that she would check, after some time on "silent hold", I noticed that she had hung up on me, hence I rang back (no reply), a few minutes later I phoned back, she blamed the disconnection on a simple thing not of her fault, and she did eventually tell me they were gluten free, and they was no chance of cross-contamination. I was delighted to see a chippy do this, she claimed they had a separate fryer and they were gluten free, however as soon as I arrived their and my friend ran in, they were saying things about me " That call burnt my head out, and I don't know what I'm doing now" was one of her quotations. I felt really upset to hear about this, especially considering they had a large sign up, mentioning to ask about allergy information, considering what happened with her reaction to the phone call, hanging up on me on one occasion and also ignoring my call, straight away, I feel they don't have a clue about allergies, and would rather risk making customers very unwell and call them names behind their back, rather than tell them a truth, this could loose business but it would avoid customers becoming very angry and/or ill. I really do regret giving The Mod Cod a second chance, and I am quite upset for them to talk me about that, especially considering since December 2014 it has been EU law for places to provide allergen information, and although they did, I highly doubt what they told me was true, but to get me off the phone quickly. I also feel not only is it disgraceful to insult customers behind their back, but to other customers too.

In response to this question my friend clearly and politely stated, 'no thanks.' The woman serving us proceeded to pour lashings of vinegar onto her chips. I probably would have been too polite to complain, but she wasn't. The lady didn't seem put out, she simply and silently threw the chips away and served up a fresh bag with no salt and vinegar. I think that's probably the best customer service you could expect here, but it was sufficient, and no-one comes to buy fish and chips for a chit-chat. The portions are very generously sized and reasonably priced - around £5 for a large fish, chips and peas. The food is always hot and tasty. There is usually a large queue in the evenings, and the recent opening of competitor Atlantic doesn't seem to have affected this Chorlton favourite. Just make sure you go after your visit to the baths opposite. I once made the mistake of going first, and it really didn't make for a pleasant swimming experience!

It's almost criminal that in a North West city there are so few stonking chippies so imagine my delight when I discovered this one in Chorlton. I'm a fan of Holland's pies and they should be in residence at any good chip shop, so I was pleased to find them here (delivered fresh every morning). It's popular, as you can tell from the long queues you'll see snaking from the counter on Friday and Saturday nights, and it would be with such huge portions at teeny prices. It'll certainly fill you up and won't lighten your pocket. And there's even a range of pop in glass bottles! That's the best way to ingest your favourite fizzy beverage.

Took ages to get the order. While waiting I noticed they'd charged me a higher amount than on their menu, mentioned it and they said 'all prices subject to change'. It's actually illegal! No manners, no thanks for spending £30 on 3 fish. Such a shame, this was a great local chippy but I wont be going back.

Hollins is one of the very few Fish and Chip shops, not just in the North West but the country to actually have gluten free offerings, which is quite good, it is good to see a larger number of places operating this now including Hollins, which is quite local to me. I ordered a Gluten Free Fish and Chips, this is served everyday when they are open other than Friday evenings after 4:30pm which is quite frustrating, they did seem to have a slightly smaller frier dedicated to gluten free food, which was good to see. The food its-self tasted okay, infact it tasted much better than it looked. The chips were just okay, despite looking quite anaemic and pale at first, which was a shame. The portion of the fish was a little small and the batter wasn't evenly spread across, making it feel like typical gluten free food as it wasn't as crunchy and tasty as a normal fish, infact I found the whole meal to taste a little bland even with my own seasoning adding on, mainly down to the gluten free batter not being too nice at all. The price was reasonable, my friend also ordered a Full fish and chips and a large pot of peas, the whole meal came to £10.60 which equals around £5.30 each which is quite reasonable, especially for gluten free as I've often paid double for the same meal while eating out, such as at 2 Oxford Place in Leeds, mainly with the high pricetag due to being free from gluten. Overall, the food here isn't fantastic but the pricing is reasonable and they do have gluten free options, and this did start recently which shows they are processing in the right direction and also do have some knowledge on cross-contamination and Coeliac Disease to use separate cooking equipment, sadly as the food was slightly bland and didn't look too nice, making it stand out in a bad way, I sadly feel this place deserves a slightly generous two star rating.

When we got home with our order, we had 2 portions missing from our order. The chips we did receive were old and shriveled and dry. Terrible. When we were waiting in the restaurant for our order to be ready, the employees were saying they had "no new chips" and were waiting a while to fulfill orders for new people walking in and ordering. Quite a queue developed. When we got home with our order, not only did we find Her that things were missing , they had given us all their old, dry, shrivelled chips for our take away order.... They were dry, almost cold and not anything I would accept in real time. Furthermore, they neglected to give us the two extra portions we had ordered and paid for. The fish we received were half the size of the fish I'd had from this place, less than a month before. So disappointed. Out group of 10 was very disappointed due to 1. Missing food (2 portions of chips) 2. The chips we had were old, shrivelled and dry. 3. The fish were half the size of what we had from the same place, less than 1 month ago. A lot of people left a lot of food. We will never go back here.

But for the rest of us, this family run chippy is unknown and that people is a shame. The Armstrongs in Shaw has been open a while now but I've never ever really ventured until one day I got a real craving for Fish & Chips. I've ventured to quite a few Fish & Chips establishments while out on patrol for my dinners but nowhere matches Armstrongs. The servings are huge. A potion of Chips can easily feed two people. The Jumbo Cod is humongous ! (See Picture) Staff are very pleasant Food is lovely !
