Grandma Pollard Chippy - View from the picnic area...

My favourite chippy in the world. As usual I had the haddock, chips and mushy peas, as usual it was…read moresuperb. You even get a scallop on top which makes it for me. The seating is unique, you can either be conventional and eat in the restaurant or eat in the bus. Yes this must be only place I've ever been to where you can eat in a bus. Family owned and it shows, it really is a gem. Only downside is parking can get a little tight but nothing can detract from this wonderful place.

Near me there are no 'proper' chippies,we have lots of Chinese chippies (Who lets face it do…read moreawesome Chinese food, but the ones near me have never mastered the art of batter for fish). But no traditional English chippies, and by that I mean ones that cook things like they do by the sea, crispy bubbly batter and chips that taste like chips. Now,as much as I like fish and chips i'm not one for driving an hour to Blackpool for some (Not helped by the fact that I detest Blackpool these days). But i'd been told about Grandma Pollards a few years ago and as myself and Mrs Z were at a loose end the other day we thought we'd give it a try. First off the exterior, the front just looks like any other chippy/chippy restaurant, but round the back it is a different story. Not only can you eat your food in a parked up bus, they also have a picnic area right by the canal (see pics) and a lovely spot it is too! Being boring we decided to eat inside the plaice (see what I did there?) and we both opted for the same food namely jumbo haddock, chips and mushy peas,or to give it's real name, food of the mythical sky beings.... Large haddock said the menu, and bloody large it was too,it was hanging over the side of the plate large. It was also really, really lovely, the batter was crispy and bubbly in equal measure and the fish inside was soft, flaky and tasty. The chips did indeed taste of chips and the mushy peas were also of the top notch variety. Grandma pollard also sells home made pies (none of that Hollands mush) and their own cakes, and even though we were incredibly stuffed from our fish feast we decided to get a couple of pies and a brick sized vanilla slice to take home with us,all of which were very nice, especially the vanilla slab!! I am now very happy because i've found a proper chippy that is not too far away from home, and at the end of the day that's what's important in life,a proper chippy!!

The Bridge - Gluten-Free Fish and Chips

The Bridge

The Bridge Chippy is a very good traditional chippy, perhaps the best in Rochdale borough, it is…read morelocated on Edenfield Rd in Norden. As well as serving traditional fish and chips, they have extended their menu further for an even greater selection, including greek gyros and ice cream. The staff seemed friendly/polite, although they were quite busy, I was served rather quickly, they had a staff member taking fish orders, while you wait in a queue to pay, I liked this approach as it meant not only was the fish cooked fresh to order, but they were keeping the queue moving quickly without delay. They do have gluten-free fish here, and they use a separate fryer too which is great, they do have limited other options, I would have liked them to manage a gluten-free curry sauce/gravy to go with the food, or a gluten-free sausage, hopefully, they'll consider that in the future. I was impressed with the quality of the fish, the batter was also crispy and a good portion size too, the chips were fresh, seasoned well and cooked well, I enjoyed my meal, it was quite reasonably priced at just under £8 too. I had to settle for some mushy peas for the side, I didn't enjoy them at all, I found the peas to be hard and almost inedible. It is cash only I'm afraid - this is one of the biggest negatives for me, I also do find the packaging to be a little flimsy and cheap, compared to the box which most other chippies are using now, so there are areas for improvement but otherwise The Bridge is a great local chippy with a greek twist and a very good gluten-free fish. Sunday openings (rare in a chippy) are also a huge plus. I would return. 4*

Thankfully it's in the village I'm originally from, but only started trading a few years ago. As well as being a traditional English chippy, they have restaurant space upstairs for you to dine in and enjoy your meal as well. I held a recent birthday get together here with my home mates (its proximity to a couple of pubs made it the ideal choice and it worked out brilliantly). Anyway, the fish they order in daily is delivered fresh and on ice, once battered in the crispy goodness it's delicious and I always order it (£3.30 for cod or £3.40 for haddock). The chips aren't too greasy and you receive a hearty portion. As well as Holland's Pies, which they warm up in the oven, they also make their own in-house (steak & ale, cheese & onion, beef & onion or rag pudding). Pretty much all the extra typical bits and bobs you can order are available (mushy peas, gravy, curry sauce, scampi, sausages, onion rings, chicken nuggets, spam fritters and canned drinks). If you're a philistine and don't want a chippy tea, they also offer a range of filled jacket potatoes. They even sell ice cream - no wonder this place is busy, it's a gastronomic wonderland.
