Unfortunately, our experiences with the front desk have been consistently frustrating and seem to be getting worse. The most concerning experience occurred when my husband was diagnosed with melanoma. After receiving such a frightening diagnosis, we waited and waited for an appointment and for information about what would happen next. We were frustrated by the lack of communication and ultimately contacted UCSF, where we were able to get an appointment quickly and received a clear explanation of the diagnosis and next steps. We've had other frustrating administrative experiences as well. I handle the medical scheduling for our family because my husband has a demanding work schedule. When I called to make an appointment for him, I was told that he needed to sign a HIPAA authorization form. I asked if they could email the form so he could sign it, but I was told he had to come into the office in person just to sign it. This seemed unnecessarily difficult. More recently, before making appointments, the front desk required us to pay outstanding balances immediately--including one bill we had not even received yet. We use an HSA to pay our medical expenses, so being required to make an unexpected payment on the spot was particularly frustrating. We have stayed with Southern Marin Dermatology because we appreciate the doctors and nurses and believe they provide good medical care. But dealing with the front desk has become increasingly difficult. I hope the practice takes these concerns seriously and improves its communication, billing practices, and overall administrative experience. Good medical care deserves an equally professional and compassionate front-office experience.

That's a bigger deal than it sounds. I have a really low pain tolerance and facials can absolutely hurt, plus I'm a sensitive person in general, so feeling relaxed beforesomeone starts working on my face matters to me probably more than it should. She never made me feel weird about any of it and checked in the whole way through. she also really knows skin. The results lasted way longer than I expected, and she doesn't disappear once the appointment is over. My brows are uneven, different shapes, the hair strokes were placed far too close together and look like blobs rather than hairs, and the color she chose is way too dark, even a month later after fading (and in full disclosure, I did not ask to see beforehand, because I trusted her, thinking that she was the professional and didn't need me to micro-manage) and I left her office in tears. My outcome/results after the first session were so poor, that I consulted 2 other professionals for a redo/correction, one of whom said that my brows cannot be fixed and I should consider removal, and the other strongly recommended that I cancel my follow up appointment and needs to see them in person before determining if it's even possible to fix them. Allison emailed me to check in a few weeks after the initial session and when I told her that I was still very disappointed, wanted to cancel my follow up appointment, and shared with her pictures of my completely uneven and blob-y brows her response was 'okay, I'll cancel it.' No apology, no effort to remedy, essentially it felt like she was saying 'good riddance.' This is your face. Please, please learn from my mistake and do your due diligence. I noticed afterwards (when it was too late!) that all of the Yelp photos are 'posted by the business owner' - not a single photo from actual clients and this seems like a HUGE red flag. Like I said, Allison was nice and made it easy to book, but all the nice-ness and ease of booking in the world won't fix the mess that will now live on my forehead for up to 2 years...

She's so good that I stayed with her when she moved to Sebastopol and again when she opened SMD in Sausalito. I'm old enough (86) to have been to several dermatologists before seeing her and she is on a different level altogether. Example: early on after seeing her for a year or so I referred one of my employees to her. As a child my employee had fallen in a construction site in Mexico and taken a piece of rebar through her cheek. It had left a highly visible scar that embarrassed her so that she kept that cheek away from you while talking to you. She had seen a plastic surgeon who told her that it could not be helped much by surgery. Well let me tell you that Dr. Smith was able to change it to a fine hairline that you could only see if you were looking for it! I cannot recommend Dr. Smith highly enough.
