Last September I was involved in a horrific accident where a large section of a tree fell on top of me causing multiple injuries including breaking my arm in three places around the elbow requiring four plates and fourteen screws. The mobility in my arm was non-existent and I was sent by my doctors to see the wonderful folks at Select to help rehabilitate my arm. My primary therapist was Blair and she was the greatest, in fact the entire staff was outstanding. I came to therapy twice a week and Blair worked patiently and methodically with me, helping me slowly but surely regain the mobility in my arm and after three months I am almost completely back to normal. I still feel some pain but that is to be expected from an injury like mine, but the mobility is just about 100%. This was important for me as I drive extensively with my job and I could not have possibly done this without the hard work and amazing techniques implemented by Blair and her great crew. I'm so grateful my Neurosurgery PA referred me to Select Physical Therapy. I had explained that other Physical Therapy groups insisted on treating each injury as a separate focus. The trouble with this approach was that exercises for one injury (ie, knee) would aggravate other injuries (ie, lumbar). I explained that I needed a holistic approach that would treat cervical, lumbar & knee injuries. After breaking my neck & undergoing multiple cervical surgeries 9 years ago, soon followed by a bad Physical Therapy experience, I had been nervous about restarting Physical Therapy. Awesome PT clinic in La Jolla. My PT is Tammy and she is super knowledgeable. I first came in because my arm and neck were flaring up one night and it kept me up. She explained that most people with an office job need to get up and walk around every so often, which is something I wasn't doing. She taught me some exercises that I could do at my desk to help with my neck and arm. I also started coming here for my left knee. I was going to a chiropractor but I didn't find it extremely helpful. Tammy gave me some exercises to work on so that it would strengthen my muscles to put less tension on my knees. I've had a herniated disk for 14 years. In addition, I stay active running, biking, and strength training so I've been through a lot of physical therapy over the years. I had been fairly pain free until I was recently hit by a car while bicycling. This resulted in a new back injury. The treatment I received from Bijan Matthews has been terrific. In just a few weeks I've gone from excruciating pain to back to full activities. I still have some residual pain but it's 95% better. The facility is very good. I've been coming to Select Physical Therapy for about a month after I had a knee injury at work. Blair and Bijan have both been amazing to work with. Both have been the only ones that have been spot on in finding the exact location of pain in my knee. These guys are fantastic. I dislocated my shoulder several years ago and it has never been the same. I am an avid rock climber and this became a serious issue for me in the last year. My shoulder was weak and instable and there was restricted blood flow to my whole arm due to muscle imbalances. Dr. Yousef is the best PT I have ever been to. I have IT band syndrome which caused lot of trouble for my running. After reading some good reviews in yelp, I went and met Dr. Yousef. He not only taught me the exercises which will help me with IT band syndrome but also taught me different stretches which I can do before running. Even though I am not completely back to where I was before, I am lot better and able to do couple of good runnings every week. Thanks to him! He is very kind and spends enough time with the patients. He never tries to sell any products from his office. But if you are looking for a foam roller, the best you can get for very cheap price is from him. He has this very long and very think foam roller for only 28 dollars. The ones I bought in store for the same price are very short and soft and never helped me. I went go to Physiotherapy Associates for a severe high-ankle sprain that I got playing indoor volleyball. How severe? I was on the cover of "Cankle Monthly" twice during recovery. I would have been "Cankle of the Year" if it wasn't for that guy two States over that puts gravy in his cereal. Now, those were cankles! My therapist was Michelle with help from Jackie. Both are very cool and were a big part of my recovery. They take their time to learn about your injury and talk you through what you can expect during your rehabilitation. I never felt uncomfortable asking questions and I knew they wouldn't do anything to put me at risk of further injury with my exercises. Michelle, on more than one occasion, adjusted her schedule to accommodate mine which was always appreciated. When your doctor opens up a conversation with "Your ankle is a mess" while he reads the MRI results, you know you've got something pretty special. With Michelle's help, I'm back to biking, running and jumping in my activities. The office is very friendly and filled with people who like what they do; which makes going there less stressful. I would loudly brag when I was given a new, and more advanced, exercise and they would reward me with undeserved appreciation. While I recognize sarcasm when I hear it, I choose to accept it as actual heartfelt praise. I hope I never need their services again, but I would recommend them, and Physiotherapy Associates, to anyone. read more

This clinic is one of the best I have been too. The entire staff is friendly and have a sense of pride in their work. Friendly front desk staff that is able to accommodate all needs. They help to fit in patients with tight work schedules, I have had visits at 5:30 AM to work with my schedule for the day. Yousef is one of the best PTs I have worked with during my knee problems. I just had my 11th knee surgery and can't thank Yousef for his ability to work with all the challenges I present. This clinic gives 30 min of one on one time with the therapist which is rare. I have to give some MAJOR and SERIOUS props to two therapists in particular- TANYA AND KEVIN! About 8 months ago, I herniated a disc in my back and really screwed it up bad. I thought for sure that surgery was going to be my only option. My surgeon sent me here to receive therapy, but told me that he's ready to operate whenever I feel that I am ready. When I walked into Physiotherapy & Associates for the first time, I could not even stand up straight- and it was very painful to walk. Thanks to Kevin and Tanya, I am walking, running, swimming, biking, weight-lifting, hiking, and working on increasing my activity each week... And I didn't have to have surgery! I really can't put into words all that Yousef has done for me. I have had severe scoliosis my entire life. After another successful spinal fusion, I was hit from behind at a stop sign causing numbness in my left hand. I went to Yousef broken, no pun intended. I could have never imagined the kind of therapy I would receive from him. The man takes his work to heart and truly cares about his patients. He is BRILLIANT and I have never seen a style like his. He was able to reach into my back and release my pain with his hands. He used my own body weight as resistance to build muscles in places I never knew I had any. I have alot of hardware in my back, which at times causes me to question my capabilities. Yousef kept challenging me both physically and mentally, ensuring me that what he was asking of me wouldn't hurt me. I remember the day on his table when I had a life changing breakthrough! Martin is the absolute best PT. He is extremely knowledgeable and has great manual manipulation technique (I think fancy terminology for massage ;-) ) and just great hands in general. He helped me completely recover from a knee problem and a pulled hamstring. Full half hour of hands on stuff in addition to exercise which is not a given at all PT clinics. He also genuinely cares about you and he really goes above and beyond what is expected. The atmosphere at the clinic is friendly and happy. The staff seem to love working here. Also I was really pleased with the amount and difficulty of the exercises. You get a stim and ice or heat session too which is great for napping. I think the only downside is that you will definitely spend a long time there - most of the time I was there for roughly 1.5 hours. It's worth the time commitment though because you WILL get better if you come here. In conclusion - can't recommend Martin enough. I've heard good things about Yousef too! read more

I went to the Del Mar clinic because they had a specialist for what I needed. My first visit I check -in and ask the girl behind the counter "how much does this cost?" She says "with the insurance it works out to $15 to 18 per visit". Then I get the bill for 4 sessions...$245.00. So I told them I'll pay what I was quoted. They say no way because I was given only an estimate and I must pay it all. That's a shady way to do business, quote low but charge high. read more

I am not sure how to rate a "ZERO" for this place so they are getting a single star default. I went here twice, brand new facility and new equipment...i'll stop there, as nothing positive following new equipment. The therapist (Renee) was unqualified, the service was brief, 40 minutes yet I see my insurance company was billed for an hour. I was put in the hospital by the therapist, emergency room the next morning as the movements she had me do were WAY to aggressive. I received a deep tissue massage in the shoulder which led to severe spasms and discomfort in my chest area (place of original injury). I could write about this place for days. The billing department called me everyday on my cellular phone asking for $60 after they had received over 1500 after only two visits. AND to make matters worse, my emergency room visit Saturday morning at 4:30 am, approximately 12 hours after the last time I stepped foot into their facility. Overall review: unprofessional, overpriced and aggressively persistent about $60 dollar leftover co-pay after the PT put me in the hospital. My phone call to her after the injury resulted in a text message from her which stated "Joe, I apologize for your pain, however I cannot help you, I suggest you go to the hospital".... Had I more time and had an attorney been willing to take on this as a case to sue this company, I would have gone to court as my emergency room bill was well over $1500. DONT GO HERE!! read more

I'm glad that others had positive results from physiotherapy associates. I did not. My therapist was friendly and knew what she was doing but was so overbooked that she couldn't oversee my exercises so I would always be worse off after I left than before I walked in. It was a frustrating experience and I am still (six months after treatment) having the same neck pain and spasm that I did when I did therapy with them. I ultimately gave up on therapy because I wasn't getting any positive results. read more

I can't say enough about the difference that working with Yousef and the rest of the crew at Physiotherapy Associates has made in my day to day. I am no longer in pain!!! In fact, I never knew how much pain i was living with until is has finally been relieved. I went to Dr. Hackley at Torrey Pines Orthopedic with chronic hip pain. I was diagnosed with IT bad syndrome and tendinitis. This was the result of an old wakeboarding injury that never healed right. He prescribed phys therapy. I found Yousef through Yelp since i wanted to go to the best in town for my condition. One of the best decisions I have ever made for myself!! I'm 10 sessions in and the the strength that I have regained in my hip is amazing. My balance has improved tremendously at the same time. I can't believe the results. I can finally be active again without dealing with near as much pain during the activity or even the day after. I'm not all the way there yet so will post another in a month. My orthopedic doctor wrote me a prescription specifically for Dr. Yousef at Physiotherapy Associates when I began having recurring knee pains while running. I have been going twice a week for the past month, and Dr. Yousef, along with the entire staff at Physiotherapy Associates, is excellent. I love that anytime I call their office, I immediately speak with a real person--not a machine. I explained my running background to Yousef, and he was able to diagnose my knee pains and explain to me what was causing the strain on my joints. He has a very methodical approach to physical therapy: make sure the patient understands what causes the pain, explain the methods and exercises to strengthen the affected muscles back to full strength, and ensure that the patient understands how to continue on without pain in future exercising/usage of the body. Yousef has given me lots of exercise and stretches to do on my own at home on a daily basis to continue improving my condition. Typically, my appointments take about 90 minutes: 30 minutes of consultation/manual therapy on the affected muscles, and about an hour of strengthening exercises on various machines or with specific equipment. The manual therapy does wonders for your muscles. My IT band was incredibly tight and strained, but Yousef did a great job stretching it out. [Also, the foam rollers they sell are fantastic, and not overly priced.] At the end of the appointment, most patients have their pain-affected area iced while electrical stimulation therapy is applied. [This is one of my favorite parts after a tough workout on my leg muscles.] Some things I would keep in mind: -The hour of self-regulated exercising can vary in length depending on how busy the place is at the time you go. I prefer to go early in the morning and have my choice of machines. -Dr. Yousef tends to book up really quickly. You can make appointments a few weeks in advance if you know your schedule, and this ensures you get in enough visits every week. -If you can, park on the street. They validate an hour of parking in the garage below, but like I said, appointments usually take ~90 minutes, and the garage charges $1 per every 20 minutes. This is another perk of going very early in the morning; you can park on the street and then use their outdoor entrance. After a month of going twice a week, my legs are doing better than they ever have, and I'm back to running high mileages multiple times a week without any knee pain. What more could a runner ask for? read more

I am eternally grateful for Yousef at Physiotherapy Associates. When I was referred to him, it was a last resort for my left knee and leg I have had 8 surgeries including 3 knee replacements in the past 6 years and my leg was so painful and nearly useless. I had gone to Dr. McBride and asked him about amputating my left leg. I am now 35 treatments out and am able to walk, bend and go to the gym once again, with my leg. I have had lots of PT in my life, but nothing like this. The attention to details, each muscle and how it works in my leg has been isolated and worked on. I am not done yet, this is going to be a life long healing process. The amount of hope I have today is amazing compared to where I was when I limped in. The other part of this, is I have paid for each session by myself as I no longer am insured and this has been worth each and every penny. Being athletic and due to four shoulder surgeries and numerous other injuries I have been going to physical therapy for many years and have worked with over a dozen physical therapists (PT). The PT plays an important role in the rehabilitation of injuries and post operation recovery and may be the difference between a lifetime of pain or freedom. Do your research and select the right one. I had to go out of my health insurance net work and pay a much higher deductible, but believe me for a good PT its is worth it. He gives you his undivided attention during your session unlike most PT's I had. * Yousef has created an atmosphere that heals the body and the spirit. This place is great! I had never had any type of physical therapy before so I really didn't know what to expect when I showed up for shoulder pain. As soon as I walked in I felt very welcomed by the receptionist (Maria) who really knows her stuff when it comes to navigating the monstrous world of insurance approvals, co-payments, etc....My therapist was Chelsea who is top notch, really knows her stuff. She works not only on the problem area but on other parts that you think are unrelated but in fact really play a part. She's good at explaining things and getting you on a specialized exercise program and then making sure to reevaluate when things need to be changed up. She's very personable and really cares about your progress. It's a fun office and everyone there is super nice, especially the assistants Alex and Eric who really save the day when it comes to making sure you're doing the exercises correctly and then setting you up for ice and electrical therapy after. While I can't say I enjoy dealing with pain if I have to deal with it, this is the place I'd like to do it at! read more

Over the years I've been treated by many physical therapists and Yousef Ghandour has been by far the best. There's a level of understanding he has with ailments, injuries and recovery that you won't find anywhere else. I have severe enough spinal issues where my doctor suggested surgery was unavoidable to relieve the pain I was in. Before going in to surgery, he wanted me to work with Yousef to see if anything could be done. Within a couple of weeks, the majority of my neck pain was gone. Over the course of a few months, I was scheduled for therapy about twice a week and eventually felt no pain throughout my neck and back. When I visited the doctor again he was surprised but said he's always amazed at the results from Yousef. At this point, surgery isn't being talked about and I'm living relatively pain free. The entire staff at Physiotherapy Associates was cool, friendly and helpful. I never had a bad experience during any of the sessions. The patients working with other therapists in that office also had rave reviews going for their therapist. They are definitely in their own league when it comes to producing results. They won't hand you over-sized rubber bands and just send you off. They perform manual therapy, have you exercise on effective machines and their process actually worked better than I was hoping for. The entire team at Physiotherapy Associates is AMAZING! I fought with persistent Achilles tendonitis for the past several months and with a subsequent back injury from overcompensation. I am an avid distance runner and swimmer. Not being able to exercise nearly drove me insane. My therapists Chelsea and Yousef gave me the tools, the guidance, and the encouragement I needed to recover. Chelsea and Yousef were always accommodating to my work schedule. They made sure I stayed on track with my recovery, even if that meant opening the clinic at 5:30am for an early morning visit. My therapists expertly guided me forward, helping me to push the envelope when the time was right. I was given homework and a personalized running schedule to ease myself back into my old routine. I should also note here, and I'm sure many athletes can relate, that there were a few occasions when I advanced my exercise routine sooner than advised. I was never reprimanded for doing so. Instead, was given the emotional support when I pushed too far to get back on task. Rex and Eric were enthusiastic assistants. They were always on point with my strengthening exercises. Their upbeat attitudes were contagious. The young ladies at the receptionist desk were equally exceptional. When you walk into the office and everyone knows you by name. You know that you are being well cared for from every angle. I am not only recovered from my injuries, I am stronger than I was at the start. I highly recommend this exceptional group. I came here after I had torn my ACL and had patellar reconstructive surgery. Michelle was my physical therapist and I honestly cannot say enough good things about her. She was very knowledgable about what exercises to do in order to get back to my pre-surgery self. She came up with creative exercises that really tested my limits, but made them fun.
