A Dunkin Donut business model applied to a healthcare facility - what could possibly go wrong?…read more Overcrowding as management wants to squeeze as much money from each inch of space as possible. The main treatment area is maybe 20 X 18 or so, like a really large living room. In it are 3 or 4 tables, a variety of equipment, etc. In this small space they often have 3 therapists and 6 patients at one time. Easy to bump into one another. If you need to ride an exercise bike they may give you a small portable set of pedals, and place it in front of a chair. The display on this toy is broke, no idea of resistance or calories used, etc. They do have real exercise bikes, maybe you will get the one in the laundry room? In addition they have a room off the PT area that does blood testing, so patients and a nurse walk thru the middle of all this chaos. I should have known when the website went on about how many locations they have, the new ones opening, etc. that I was looking at a franchise mentality. With that said, the staff is friendly, energetic, encouraging, enthusiastic and do they best they can with what they are given to work with.

My mother had a stroke and went through intensive rehabilitation at Spaulding in Charlestown, MA…read more After insurance rejected continued coverage at Spaulding, I had only one day to find a place she could receive step down care for the remainder of her rehabilitation before going back to independent living in a senior community. Sachem had high ratings on paper, so we chose it without checking it out first. Big mistake. The day she transferred in, I went to check the place out, only to be greeted by a strong sewage smell at the front door. I was too late, she was already in a double room. Within 4 days, I saw a significant decline in all of the progress my mother had made. Her speech started to become unclear again and she was confined to a wheel chair or bed. I asked the head nurse what steps I would need to take to transfer her to another, better step down facility. That's the only time things started to change. I met with the coordinators of social services, physical and occupational therapy, and nursing to discuss a plan. In the meantime, some of my mothers belongs went missing. They moved her to a private room and she ended up staying for the rest of the approved time at Sachem, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I had to argue that I simply wanted my mother treated with the same courtesy and care they would give their OWN mothers. Apparently, they don't care about their own moms, because little changed. If there was anything good from the experience, it would be that it helped my mother start to process her fear of additional strokes, because she wanted out of Sachem so badly.
