Years later I returned because I was in training as a psychoanalyst and it was mandatory that I undergo psychoanalysis. I saw him three times per week on the couch for many years. I therefore feel that I know him well enough as a provider. In sum, I think that Dr. Barry Magid is as good as it gets. He is a very bright an capable guy. He is a board certified psychiatrist and also a psychoanalyst. In addition, he is a roshi. But he never disclosed this to me until I found out via an Internet search. He was always extremely respectful of my Christian faith even though he is a religious leader in another faith. I think that Dr. Magid reads a lot and knows a lot about many different things. I am both an attorney and psychoanalyst and was always amazed at the scope of Dr. Magid's intellect and his modesty. As an analyst, I have only superlatives for him. He is very empathic and he is absolutely not a drug happy psychiatrist. He works within a Relational/Self-Psychological paradigm and is clearly very knowledgeable and capable as such. He is warm, funny, highly empathic and, at least with me, he was very interactive. I covered a lot of ground and made a lot of progress with him. Part of this may be that I was lucky enough to come upon a good fit with him. This is very important but, at the end of the day, I just think that Barry Magid is just a very talented therapist. Years have gone by and the work I have done with him has endured. He never supervised me but the way in which he works has nevertheless impacted how I work as a therapist with my patients. My experience with Dr. Brian Pell deserves to be publicly documented so others know exactly what…read morethey are walking into. I booked an appointment specifically for an ADHD assessment, clearly stated as such. That was the entire purpose of the visit. Yet, during the call, Dr. Pell casually informed me that they are not conducting ADHD assessments at this time and may resume, possibly in January or February of next year. This immediately raised a red flag: if you are not offering the service, why accept an appointment for it? Why bill insurance for something you never intended to provide? The entire interaction lasted 18 minutes, and not a single part of it resembled an evaluation. Instead, we spent the bulk of the time discussing my career. He asked about my former psychiatrist's nationality; he seemed very interested in why he didn't take insurance "as a Black doctor" (which I perceive as a common conflation between race and poverty). He then asked only two quick, surface-level questions about why I was seeking an ADHD assessment. Then in the same breath that he told me they are not doing assessments, he also told me that I probably do not have ADHD. He said this despite the fact that I was coming to him for a second opinion after already completing a comprehensive, legitimate ADHD evaluation with a diagnosis from an actual specialist. (I did not share I was coming in for a second opinion, as I didn't want it to be biased). He provided no testing, no structured questions, no clinical methodology, nothing that even remotely resembled evidence-based practice. The whole thing felt dismissive, and frankly, like a complete waste of my time. I left the appointment feeling misled and deeply uncomfortable, as insurance had been billed for a service that was never delivered. If you are seeking serious mental health care, diagnostic clarity, or responsible clinical practice, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. This experience felt unhelpful and entirely out of alignment with what any patient should expect from a licensed provider.
