While on a bus tour around Scotland, I ended up in Ullapool, which, purportedly, had "the best fish and chips in the world." Wanting to stuff that in my craw as quickly as possible, I went to the first place I saw, decorated with fish and chips award sticks, Seefresh Foods. I should comment and say that this is a chip shop, not a sit-down kind of restaurant. You buy your fish and chips, and then you go wander over to a sunny table near the docks and sit down and eat them (while being accosted by seagulls).
I stood in line and got a reasonably large portion of fish and chips for a decent price. The quality of the chips and batter were fine, but the fish did seem a little bit dry/not freshly cooked. This would have been okay, on its own, but what made me give this shop a 2 star review is that, a few hours later, I discovered my traveling companions had gotten much better quality fish and chips from a shop right around the corner. I was slightly peeved.
Bottom line, go around the corner and go to "The Chippy," which is attached to the "Seaforth Inn" and get your fish and chips there. read more
