The Arch Inn is - obviously - an inn, but also a restautarant and a bar and pub. So three-in-one covers it pretty well. On a Wednesdaynight in September we decided rather spontaneously to spend the night in Ullapool. We tried a couple of hotels and B&Bs, all were fully booked. Then, when we drove along the cute little harbor of Ullapool we saw the Arch Inn. The sign/logo is very stylish, so we gave it a try. The reception is the bar, I was told upon entering and asking someone. I waited some minutes, and then the manager or probably even owner came along. She did have a room for us she said, and the rate was something like £80 for two people including breakfast. We took it. It's an old house that has been renovated. With a lot of style, as we thought. It's not a design hotel and the furniture is rather cheap, but still very nice. The two beds were comfy and the bathroom spacious - we got the wheelchair accessible room. We also had dinner here, after waiting for 45mins to get a table. Fortunately there's great beers at the bar, so the wait was okay. I ordered some onion rings as starter and the sirloin steak as main dish. It was okay, not the best meal ever. You might want to consider eating somewhere else. Breakfast is served upstairs, and it was really good. The staff is really friendly and everything was clean. We'd stay again, but as said eat out somewhere else (go early or make reservations).

I had a quick meal of chilli and veg tagliatelle and a citrus creme brûlée and all was good. Very busy but service was quick and attentive.

There are a few tables across the road so we grabbed a beer to take in the beautiful view of Loch Broom.

We've ordered the fried fish wrap, the seafood bowl and some fresh oysters. We actually wanted also some langoustines like last time. But since the menu is always a bit changing and depending on the catch, this time this option wasn't available. But there were some of them in the mixed seafood bowl. Also some herring, salmon, seafood dip and salad was in the delicous bowl. The fried fish wrap was excellent as well. Fresh cod, nicely fried. Crispy outside and nice, fresh and tender inside. Good stuff. And now for the highlight: The Oysters. We've had oysters in the Normandy (France), Spain, Italy, Portugal, South Korea, Japan, Australia, the US and in many other places. In several spots in England and Scotland as well. And these here were so far the best we've ever had! Fresh flavours of the sea, nicely sized, very sweet, smooth and creamy. Excellent oysters - almost drove three hours back the next day just to get some more. -But an altogether six-hour drive was a bit too much in the end. Hopefully next time around the oysters will be as great as this time. This time the weather was pretty cold and it was a bit rainy at times. So it was easy to get a table - even got one under the tent. Last time it was warm and sunny, but hard to get a seat and there was a long line. This time it was all easy, an advantage of this kind of weather which we didn't mind at all. A really really great place to grab some fantastic seafood items. We definitely will be back.

Service not the best (for such a top establishment). Not attentive. Even worse, no apologies when there was plastic in the dish! That is a major fail to be honest. Waiter said he'd talk to kitchen and never came back. When the bill came we had to tell this different waiter about the whole episode. Again no apology but when she came back with a revised bill she quietly took the charge off (so that dish was free). Fine but why such bad handling of this whole incident?

Emma was our server and was warm; delightful and very helpful with my gluten allergy; and Rebecca, the manager, was lovely, and helped us earlier in the day to arrange transport from Sconser. For the meal .... Well! We started with the crab, which was flavorful and very fresh. My husband saw the table next to us served the Curried Cauliflower soup, and had to try it. Super!! The entrees were exceptional; I had a lovely, thick piece of cod, with a beautiful butter and lemon sauce with grape tomatoes, and they subbed out a stacked potato dish, due to my gluten allergy, and it was delicious. My husband had the scallops with pork belly, and while both were fantastic, the pork belly was truly amazing. We also had a side of the seasonal vegetables, which were crisp and very fresh. I…read moremention this in the event that unfavorably influenced our perception of our experience, which was not the five-star dinner that we were anticipating. We arrived on time to a nearly empty restaurant (weekday evening, post rush hour, one other table wrapping up on the ground level as we arrived, a couple more on the upper level), and had to wait for our reserved table, which ended up being by the front door on a cold and rainy evening (aka normal Scottish weather for November). It was unclear what was slowing service down, but the wait to order cocktails was surprisingly long. Our drinks were made promptly and well. We began to place our meal order when the server excused themselves while in the process to take a drink order from the table that had arrived several minutes after we were seated (with the entirety of the lower level of the restaurant available, this boisterous table of four was set right next to us. Fortunately we hadn't been planning a quiet, romantic dinner...). In fairness to our server, there may have only been one other person working tables that night, but not great form even so. We eventually got our order placed. A breadbasket was brought out (three slices of bread for the two of us). Our food arrived in OK time and was itself OK, having seemed to have sat in the pass a little long for some reason. All this said, the menu looked solid, and while the entrees weren't especially memorable this visit, their cocktail options were good (we enjoyed the Highlanders Negroni made with Badachro Coastal gin) and desert options (a proper Mixed Berry Eton Mess). An additional positive note: my wife lost a ring in the restaurant during our visit and the bartender, quickly seeing that we were in distress, joined our search for it. I'm confident we would have given up on finding it were it not for his effort, so again, cheers to you, sir. This was above and beyond, and what I think probably passes for the standard of care that many experience dining here. So a mixed bag for us. I don't think this represents a typical dining experience here. Mustard Seed is well-thought of locally (there is a small, discreet shelf of awards tucked away around a corner), and if we should find ourselves back in Inverness looking for a dinner spot we wouldn't rule out Mustard Seed out of hand. I look forward to the prospect of rewriting this review.
