Been wanting to dip my toe into urban vertical gardening. I don't trust my thumbs to be green enough to try growing plants from seeds, preferring to go from small plants. I was able to get everything I needed here for my tiny amateur container garden. This place has tons of herbs (the scent in their mint section is heavenly), an unexpectedly HUGE selection of peppers, basil, etc etc. Was also able to get some beets, tomato and cucumber plants. They have so many flowers and shrubs - I wasn't able to resist getting a beautiful hibiscus plant that reminded me of my Caribbean childhood. The staff was extremely knowledgeable - helped me plan my containers in such a way as to prevent overcrowding, helped me with soil selection and volume and the specifics of caring for my hibiscus. They carried everything to my car for me and packed the soil into my trunk. Any place that has dedicated parking always gets an extra point from me. They accept cards. Price is ok, not too $$$ but not the best prices ive ever seen but the place is convenient and I'm happy to support local. read more

This place is epic. Definitely the best nursery/ plant store I've come across in Philly. We live within walking distance of several awesome centre city plant shops. However, Secret Garden had: - a better selection than anyone in CC - better prices - healthier plants, and - knowledgeable/ friendly staff We ended up buying $100 worth of plants and could easily have spent double that. My late friend, Dee, who grew up in Manayunk and knew that area as well as Ridge Avenue like the palm of her hand, told me about this place and offered to drive me there. Garden centers are like catnip for me so I was looking forward to the adventure. Even though Dee swore she knew every block of The Ridge, we kept driving back and forth, unable to find this place. We stopped a few pedestrians who said they'd never heard of it. Finally I suggested we call the business and discovered we'd kept driving right past it. Not as dumb as it sounds, really (us, I mean) because this is tucked behind another business rather than being street or curbside, thus really making it a Secret Garden. While it seemed like there was a large selection of plants, rose bushes, ground cover, herbs and the sort of flora any garden spot carries, I immediately had 3 issues. One-most things I looked at had no prices posted. No sign, nothing written or stamped on the pots or flats. Second issue was lack of trolley, wheel barrow or basket to put plants on, and once I'd selected a few things, I was unable to continue shopping while carrying them. When I finally found and went to the check out area and asked if I could stash my purchases to be there until I was ready to pay, I was curtly told NO. I asked if there were carts and the employee looked at me and walked away. Third issue, similar to my first complaint, was lack of identification. While I'm a pretty serious amateur gardner, I can't and don't recognize everything green without a little help. There seemed to be a dearth of sales folk walking around that could have answered questions. On the plus side, everything there, whether I recognized it or not, looked very healthy and well cared for. In frustration, I finally left without buying anything. I mentally told myself I'd make another trip with Dee during bare root rose season, but was never sufficiently movtivated to do so. read more

So I bought a trio of tomato plants, four brussel sprouts, a squash, an eggplant, and a bell pepper plant from two local spots and a Lowes, busted my hump digging out a garden and planting the greenery, and sat back waiting for my bounty. It's about two weeks later and I feel proud of how great things look so far, or at least I was, but then I looked into my neighbors' yards. It turns out the neighbor behind has the same setup going that I do, and directly next door is just rocking tomatos, only they got theirs from the Secret Garden, and on average every plant is three times as big as their counterparts in my yard. Neighbor behind started earlier and indoors, so that explains a little, but next door started a week after me and so there can be only one conclusion: better stock. Today I stopped over the to check out their uber plants and was won over instantly. The store is entirely outdoors, and it felt like I was shopping in someone's well cultivated back yard garden more than a gardening supply shop. Flowers, shrubs, trees, water plants.... Everything the enthusiastic yard worker could dream of, and for a very affordable price. I picked up a cherry tomato plant (technically two), a habanero plant, an extremely tall tomatillo sapling, and six double string bean pots, all for $9. I felt I did so well that I also decided to splurge for a $10 dwarf fig tree, and they, seeing how amateur I am and how close to dying the tree already was, gave me a 1/2 price deal. These days, $14 for all that I got is a huge steal. I'm committed to the runts I got from elsewhere because they've already soaked in enough of my blood, sweat, and tears, but come next year I know where I am getting all of my foliage. read more

This tucked away nursery is a gem. I too have driven past it, unable to see the signage in the beginning. I discovered it two years ago, though, when I moved to the area and have gone countless times since, when gradually landscaping our new garden over the seasons. There is so much variety when it comes to annuals, perennials, shrubs, and they are maintained in great condition. There are herb and veggie starts as well. It's important for me to find native plants to support local birds and insects, and I always find great varieties of native plants and shrubs like Fothergilla, columbine, anise hyssop, coneflowers, salvia, bee balm. Great selection of succulents, too, when the weather warms. Also lots of organic soil amendment products. The staff have always been friendly and helpful, and there are some wagons available when you've got a haul, but I often bring a box with me in case they're all in use, if I plan to grab a lot of little guys. FYI in answer to a previous reviewer's complaints, prices are written on the pots themselves. Plant tags list the plant ID. Go visit this place before you head to a Big Box Store - if you can find it, you won't regret it! read more

The secret garden is great! I just picked up a bunch of cold weather veggies on the cheap! They always have really nice and healthy plants. You can feel good knowing that what you are buying is what you are supposed to be planting during that season. The employees are always nice and helpful. He helped me load up the mulch into my car. They have all kinds of new mushroom compost and other organic soils. I only gave 4 stars because of the price of the mulch. I paid $5 a bag. I know I could have gotten it cheaper somewhere else but I paid for convenience. This is definitely my go to plant spot when I don't purchase from Lunaria Gardens. read more

Hidden treasure, yes. I like this garden center mostly because it will have a selection not typical of all the commercial places, Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. and the prices are pretty reasonable. The staff is personable and knowledgeable and helpful. It's well organized and the plants are always healthy. Plenty of parking, too. If you need annuals, there are many other local places to patronize and get the plants pretty cheap. I like to come here for the hard-to-get accents that make your garden dazzle. It's a lovely hidden oasis to just browse, too - peaceful and quaint. It's next to a massive beer distributor for you convenience. (A biergarten could be the next move.) Secret Garden is a bit of a magical place when you get back in there past the beverage center. I grabbed 3 plants for this season from their garden center, some tomato cages, garden and potting soil. The plants were a jalapeno pepper, bell pepper, and a Cherokee Purple tomato. Unfortunately both my pepper plants ended up having a bacterial leaf spot, so I had to get rid of them. If you are buying peppers here just make sure you look them over good. It is just as likely the bacteria came from the supplier as it spread at Secret Garden, I don't know. But fact is my peppers had to go. My Cherokee Purple looks awesome and I can't wait to watch them grow. When I got soil they helped me take it to the car and were helpful whenever I needed them. read more

Went here for the first time today. They have a huge selection and their prices were comparable or better than most other places in the area. The staff is very friendly, helpful, and knowledgable. Not only do they have a wide selection of plants, but they also have gardening tools and supplies. Will absolutely be using them as my go to garden centre from now on. read more

The name of this place is very fitting; I've lived in Manayunk for years, I frequently drive down Ridge Ave. and I never knew this place was there! After we discovered it, we went there to buy some of the plants for our backyard. Overall, our experience was very positive: the woman who helped us was very knowledgeable, their selection was diverse, and everything looked healthy and well-cared for. It did take a while to be helped, though, as there were many customers and not enough staff to offer the support that people were looking for. Also, the prices were a little higher than our local hardware store, which just added a new garden section. I'd go back for the knowledgeable staff, the variety of plants, and the chance to support a great local business. read more

I've been going to the secret garden for about four years now. Carol is amazing~ she puts up with my never ending questions and finds the perfect plants for my spaces. It may sound like an easy task, but the guys at Lowes never seemed to get it right. You see, I'm the type of person who forgets about her plants a majority of the time, so I need something that doesn't need to be watered all the time, it will just flourish in my neglect. Unless its under my ac in the window box I have- then it gets drenched all summer. Now that I know what plants I like and where I want them, my gardening takes leas than an hour(in my small garden that is) and NONE of them die, because I have the right plants in the right spot with the right type of treatment. Friendly, wide variety of plants, and so generous! Went in today to have a favorite plant repotted, without a pot... I had no idea there was a "pot shortage", and they indeed didn't have. Richard said he be happy to repot it for me if I got a pot. I drove around and went back later with no pot found... But Richard found a bigger plastic pot for me to later put in a nicer one. He repotted my plant with fresh topsoil and and would not take any money! read more

This place has everything you could want in a local garden center. Unique plants and flowers, healthy and priced right, along with all sorts of garden odds and ends. My first trip there I found these huge vertical planters that I hung off my deck that just look amazing. The staff there has so much pride and knowledge in what they sell... and as a killer bonus, its right next to a beer outlet. How great is this place?? I can't say that I'm the least bit of a green thumb, in fact I've never taken intrest in plants unless they were seasoned, dressed and served on a clean plate. Fast foward to me becoming a homeowner with a "Philly" yard full of annoying English Ivy (think small, sloping patch in front of a row home). Having grown up in the bottom of the map, I'm accustomed to grass only, so that foliage had to go. I visited a several times before I could settle on plants that I liked and ones that would thrive with little to no matienance (read zero experience). Each time, John was patient and offered helpful suggestions. He even ordered plants that were not in stock to satisfy the Goggled list of cool perrennials that I compiled. They have a HUGE selection and anything they don't have they can order for you. They're also great with suggestions-- for example, you can ask them questions like "what can I plant in my shady spot that gets southeastern light but has small soil depth? I'd heard positive reviews about Secret Garden Nurseries and was excited to find it tucked behind a beer distributer on Ridge ave, but sadly, I cannot add to the positive reviews. I'm an experienced gardener and purchased six herbs and eight perennials. Two of the perennials and four of the herbs died. Five of the living perennials are doing well but the sage and rosemary are peaked. read more

I have been going to Secret Garden for years. In the spring and summer, for plants for my balcony. Carol and John (the owners) are always very helpful. They can tell me what will do well and how to take care of the plants. In the fall, for chrysanthemums and pumpkins, and at Christmas, for my wreaths and tree. BTW the Douglas Fir I purchased this year hadn't dropped a needle and I kept it decorated until mid-January. They also do party rentals. I had a large group for thanksgiving and rented tables, chairs and linens for the dinner--this made the day practically painless. I can't wait to drop in when this frosty winter is finally over to stock up for spring. read more

We were able to find the perfect sized tree for our tiny house and it was super affordable.
