Cons: Had the Lavendar Latte as so many others raved about it. I liked trying a new drink, however, it came out a little burnt that came with a bitter aftertaste. Had to be in Charleston for work two weeks ago and found one of the best coffee shops around the area! These guys are taking their coffee seriously and it shows. This place knows coffee. Espresso was smooth with a perfect crema, served properly with seltzer on the side. Lavender latte was delicious. Nice atmosphere to get some work done or sit and chat with a friend. Only in town for a few days but I'll be back on this trip for sure. read more

Psyched on this place. Another Counter Culture account, these guys do it with style, plus they have an old cask style tap handle (which is black, hence the name) to draw out their killer on tap cold brew. The cafe itself is cozy and simple, really aesthetically pleasing, and after talking to the owner and comparing notes after w determined that we both lived for a time in the Sacramento area and knew a bunch of the same people, I left with a really good feeling about the place. Counter Cultures reputation as one of the countries best roasters is well deserved and I walked out with one of my favorite offerings from them, the New Guinea Baroida, which Ive had at a number of other cafes plus brewed at home so it's always cool to get to compare tasting notes on a consistent roast of an excellent coffee. My cup offered up exactly what I had hoped for, a mixture of sweet and savory notes, with a lightish stonefruit acidity and syrupy finish, round mouthfeel and deep body. Black Tap will for sure be my go to when Im in the Charleston area, and I would encourage anyone who finds themselves there to swing through for a cup. read more

Okay, so I was really curious about this Shakereto thing cause I'm like one of those people that like sweet coffee drinks. I asked the guy there if it was a shake like I was expecting and he told me yes. He hands me this thing and it looks like one of those very bitter tasting coffee shots that tastes bad but people like cause it'll really wake you up in the morning. So I ask the guy "Does it taste good?" and he says "Well of course it tastes good. We wouldn't sell you something if it didn't taste good." Let me tell though, it tasted awful and to that I have to say to you sir, "Woe to those that call evil good and good evil" Isaiah 5:20. Hahaha I really shouldn't complain too much though. I knew the drink was gonna be a hit or miss because, after all, it is coffee and coffee is always bitter and at best bittersweet. In town visiting on a Work trip. This place had great reviews for workspace and WiFi. Good workspace - yes. But wrestled with the WiFi for an hour before getting up to leave. Not too happy after walking 4 blocks to get here after paying $6 for parking. Not to mention the time wasted. Coffee was pretty yuck too. At least the walk there was pretty. The Black Tap in an excellent place for coffee. Tried both the macchiato and a pour over. The macchiato was superb. The pour over was prepared nicely, but I am too spoiled by the superior quality of my hometown Swings coffee in the DC metro area. Nice location, excellent place to grab a cup. read more

We stopped in for coffee each of the four mornings we were here. Beautiful, simple, clean surroundings, the highest quality coffee and very friendly staff. Hands down the best coffee shop in the whole of Charleston. It's a little off the beaten path so not many people (locals) know about it but it's worth every penny, the ambience is beautiful, a great work/reading environment if you get a seat, lots of natural light, ice water with lemon you can help yourself to... the guys who run this place know their coffee. read more

Super cute atmosphere and great drinks. Definitely try the black julep and the lavender coffee. The coffee shop itself is really cute and the people are friendly. However, it can be uncomfortably quiet. People there were studying and not socializing at all. My friend and I felt slightly awkward even having a quiet conversation, but maybe it was just an odd time. Recommended nonetheless! read more

Coffee was fine. Just had to say how hilarious "pour over coffee" is. Not being from Charleston I thought this was something special only to watch them take coffee in a filter and literally pour hot water over it...as in Exactly how I've been making coffee when I go camping for the last 30 years...and Exactly how regular drip coffees are made. I doubt your pretty silver tea pot makes the water taste better. Got really great iced coffee and pastries here. The pastry selection was wide and imaginative and we tried the warm banana Nutella turnover and the cinnamon pecan coffee cake, both were tastylicious. Great stop if you're looking for good quality craft coffee in Charleston. You might have to wait a bit, but the baristas were very friendly and they took great care of us. we come here for coffee every time we visit charleston. the coffee is specialty- really great selection and never disappoints. they have a minimalistic menu, which is always a good sign! we also got a croissant, which was delicious and rivals our favorite bakery at home. only "con" would be that it's a pretty small shop with limited seating, so you could be stuck standing for a bit while you wait for a place to open up. but we are used to that, and it just confirms how good this place is! if you are a coffee aficionado then definitely go here. read more

My wife and I discovered this wonderful coffee shop on an early walk one morning. The coffee was simply amazing! There is a Starbucks in the hotel that we had stayed in and I am so glad we skipped it for Black Tap. The pastries were from a local bakery (I didn't get the name) but they were equally as good. Cool, unpretentious atmosphere that I could have hung out in for hours with a good book or the Sunday paper. read more
