I was working in the area and really needed a pick me up during my lunch break. Saw all the good reviews and decided to trial second nature. The location is convenient and I appreciated the small but efficient parking lot they had. The shop almost looks like an Airbnb by a beach or someone's house. I like it and thought the aesthetics were cool. I only ordered a mobile London fog and was impressed. Not sweet at all but had a strong yet tasty tea flavor. Service is superb. TL;DR: Cute place, mid seasonal drinks, limited parking & seating. ​Food & Drinks (1/5): Complete disappointment, especially considering the price. I ordered a Gingerbread Latte ($7) and an Eggnog Latte ($6.50). The Gingerbread Latte tasted like nothing but plain milk and espresso since there was no syrup or spice profile at all. I actually had to use their spice bar to season it myself just so it wouldn't taste like hot milk. ​To make matters worse, they have these wooden snowman shaped plugs for the to-go cups. They look cute, but they are the wrong size for the lids. When you put them in, they scrape against the lid and drop wood shavings into your coffee. ​The Maple Walnut Scone ($5.50) tasted good with plenty of maple flavor, but it wasn't a scone. It was very soft and airy, more like a piece of bread than a traditional crumbly scone. ​Service (3/5): There were two people working and they were efficient. The drinks came out quickly, though the quality control was lacking. ​Ambiance (4/5): The highlight of the visit was the building itself. It has a chalkboard menu on the main wall with a smaller seasonal menu on the side of the register. It is a beautiful, historical space that feels very quaint and charming. While the interior is lovely, please note that seating is minimal. Also, the parking lot is quite tiny. I'd recommend skipping the stress of their lot and using the public parking area a few streets away instead. read more

The wall of vintage bean dispensers and bags of roasted beans certainly draws the coffee aficionado in! The staff was friendly and attentive and actually thanked us before we placed our order for coming in. Not a bad way to start things off. I went with the house roast of coffee, hot of course, and the team asked if I would mind waiting 2 minutes for a fresh pot to finish brewing. Not at all! Once poured, the coffee was downright delicious, piping hot and would certainly serve as a solid, daily coffee option each day should you so choose. My wife ordered an iced oat milk latte and noted that it was one of the best ones on our trip to Virginia. Pretty high praise! I had to purchase a bag of beans to bring home; too. The woman who took our order had been doing something when we entered. I'm not sure if she had completed her task but with very little eye contact and a shortness of tone she took our order. It definitely felt as if we were an inconvenience. My wife and I ordered two lattes, one vanilla and one white mocha. My wife's lacked any flavor at all and mine was only a bit better. Only 3 to 4 sips in we disposed of them at the next coffee shop we came to. Perhaps it was a bad day and we were just passing through town ... I don't know. But I am particular about my tea, and to me the sign of a good coffee shop is whether they also take care of my type. Glad to say that Second Nature has me covered. I like a good black tea, and their English Breakfast -- in a proper bag -- is excellent. No idea what brand it is, but it's smooth with no odd flavors. It always bugs me when coffee shops have all sorts of exotic teas but no simple black tea like an English Breakfast. Well, Second Nature does, and so I'm usually there a couple of times a month. Loved our experience at second nature coffee!! I got their speciality latte, the pistachio one, based on a server recommendation and was not disappointed. It was the perfect level of sweetness to without feeling like dessert in a cup and the pistachio flavor really came through in a great way. One of the better specialty lattes I've had to date! They also sell very delicious locally made cookies (the m&m one was noteworthy) as well as a variety of little healthier snacks up front. I remember when this was King Street Coffee and the anticipation of it becoming Second Nature Coffee. Since then, we have visited on numerous occasions and enjoyed each time. The setup is very similar to what is was before, a small lounge area inside with seating for a couple of groups, standing room to wait for orders in front of the counter and a single stall bathroom. Out front there are usually open chairs on the porch and a water bowl for your pups. Also outside, there are now two areas: one near the front entrance with Adirondack chairs plus a new patio in the rear with tables, chairs and umbrellas. Also, they added a pretty mural on the rebuilt parking lot retaining wall. The service is always speedy and friendly. The drinks are always tasty. The food options are pretty good too with gluten free options. If you are in town, stop by, it's worth it. Note: Parking can be tricky at this location with limited spaces though. read more
