I totally forgot how majestic and beautiful these animals are. Upon entering, we were greeted by Ania who turned out to be our instructor/guide for our trail ride. Upon checking in, we grabbed horseback riding helmets and Ania walked us through some basic instructions and what to expect on the trail ride. It was great to learn how to push the horse to move, stop, or speed up. My horse was Eleanor, a grey Mustang Mare. She was super friendly and easy to ride with. The trail ride includes scenic bridle paths in Loantaka Park and we even picked up the pace and trotted a couple of times which was amazing to experience. I had such a wonderful, amazing experience last year I had to come again! A birthday gift to myself, I came for a trail ride today and I had another wonderful experience at Seaton Hackney. The staff are incredibly kind and the horses, animals and farm land are beautifully taken care of. Here is a pick with me and Johnny! He was such a sweetheart. I didn't want to leave! Now I want to start off by saying I never write reviews. Doesn't matter if I like or dislike a place, I typically never go outta my way to leave one; but like people say. There's a first time for everything.Seaton Hackney Stables has been unprofessional, condescending, and just plain rude. I first found out about this place through google. I looked up horse back riding as a Christmas gift for my wife and Groupon was the first option which pulled this place up as they had a trail ride deal for two. I purchased it and sometime in February I reached out to them to schedule the ride. When I was on the phone with them. A young lady told me to not claim it yet so she can have access to the code the day of. We scheduled for April 4th (for the nice weather) I believe and she reassured me that even tho it was outside the expire date (march 17th) , as long as I had the code it would be fully covered. I tried calling march 17th because I was weary of the expiration date and it took me to voicemail. I called again a few days later and they didn't answer. I then called Monday the 23rd which they answered and informed me that since it was past the expiration date I would have to pay whatever is left over from full price which was $60 dollars. So $160 dollars total. I went along with it (even tho they said it would be fully covered prior) because I'm non-confrontational and even rescheduled for the 29th as me and my wife wanted to do something over the weekend. Now, today is the 29th and we had a family emergency to take care of in the morning which didn't leave us with any time in the afternoon to get to the appointment, so I call them reschedule and then the lady on the phone tells me we have to pay another surcharge on top of the $60 to cover the cancellation and to reschedule and I was shocked. I wanted to make sure I was hearing her right and she got annoyed that I asked her to repeat herself. By this point I am annoyed with everything that has happened so I let her know I will call her back, and open a refund claim thru Groupon. Lastly, I get a call back from Seaton hackney stables and they wanted to confirm I was coming to the appointment. I let them know I wasn't and the lady on the phone starts yelling at me. Asking why I was cancelling. I told her why again and that I opened a claim with Groupon. She was furious. She asked me why I would do that and after I explained the entire situation she told me of course I can't claim an expired Groupon; and that I have to pay full price and plus the price to reschedule. she also got mad that I went through Groupon. Like I said I am non-confrontational but at that point I gave her a piece of my mind about everything that happened and she asked if was coming once more. Before I said no, she hung up on me. After all that I reported it to Groupon and am still waiting for a refund. I want to leave this as a warning. The people running this place need to train their employees on courtesy as they are a representation of them in overall. They were rude, condescending, and added charges everywhere. They all need to get on the same page over there to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else. I hope everybody reads the rest of the low reviews. Do not trust this place. read more

I would just like to preface this review with - I know absolutely nothing about horseback riding. With that said, I learned a lot from my daughter's first riding lesson at Seaton Hackney Stables and it was absolutely wonderful! My daughter was given a 30 minute ride gift certificate for her 5th birthday and we finally got around to using it. She was a bit nervous and apprehensive leading up to the day, but once she got there she was so excited and the instructor really helped calm her nerves. Her instructor was amazing! Chrissy I believe. She was so patient with my daughter and taught her so many things about riding. She began by teaching her about the different riding components. She helped my daughter get on the pony (named Pumpkin) and led her out to where she was going to ride. During the riding lesson she taught her how to start the horse, steer the horse, the two-point position, trot, and how to stop the horse. My daughter was in her glory. She loves to learn new stuff, and add to that riding a horse?! It was perfect. Pumpkin was also the sweetest pony, very gentle, and just went with the flow. The half hour lesson was just long enough for my daughter, I think she would have been "too tired" after an hour. I also really enjoyed watching her ride from the bleachers. I first learned about the Seaton Hackney Stables through corporate circles. Everyone that I encountered had positive things to report. Some liked the awray of experiences available for their children while others commented on the skilled personable instructors . The stables offer 1/2 hour and hourly lessons. You can request private, semi-private and group lessons in a variety of riding disciplines including: English, Dressage and Cross Country. They have over 30 horses on the premises so fitting a horse to the rider is a key advantage to having a good riding experience. Schedule in advance and arrive 15 minutes before you lesson or trail ride. Horses are fitted with their own saddles and ASTM helmets must be warned. They have helmets available if you do not have your own. Up on your arrival a waiver must be filled out. The horses are well taken care and trained. The barns are clean. Before your ride you are coached in the handling of the horse. You are taught to start, steer, the two point position, trot and stopping the horse. The trail ride is through woods, meadows along a creek path and meadows. The ride is about 1 hour long. I hope you enjoy your trail ride as much as I did. read more

I went with my husband today to get a refresher training for horseback riding and we had such a great time! We arrived 30min early for our appt so we can check out the place. Once checked in, we signed our waivers, and was sent to retrieve a helmet from an outdoor shed. After our helmet selection, we then proceeded to a picnic table as advised where our instructor would come pick us up. However we waited 15 min past our appt because our horses were not ready yet. The wait didn't bother us as it was a beautiful day and we were admiring all the beautiful horses and all the kind hearted volunteers tending to the horses- grooming and washing mostly. we were assigned with Sydney for training, and she is a great instructor. Very patience and excellent communication. Perfect if is your first time riding. Our instructor also mentioned this stable has a separate session where one instructor would bring a group of people out for a scenic ride on horses. One suggestion is a "score card" showing how a kid is doing so each new trainer and parents know the kid's experience level. Also pass on if a kid has adhd as horses respond to distractibility. After a few years of hiatus, I have returned to SHS for lessons for my granddaughter. In the last few months, I have been pleasantly surprised by the vast improvement in the premises and organization of the office. The instructors have always been very knowledgeable and kind, but now everyone seems to be happier, including the animals. Today I looked around at the activity and thought that SHS was hitting on all cylinders. The new office manager clearly sees how SHS should run and is putting her stamp on the operation. Most important to me is that my granddaughter is thrilled and wants to ride every day. Good job, SHS staff! Two friends and I decided to go horseback riding and we were looking for a stable in Northern NJ. While there were a few in the area, we chose Seaton Hackney and had a great time. When you call to set up your ride in advance, they prep you extremely well and set great expectations. It didn't feel commercial what so ever, and we always felt we were in great hands. Our instructor Jen was AWESOME, always making sure we were good but also empowering us to ride. Price was pretty decent for a group, less expensive than other stables in the area. It's common to find stables, but not as common to find stables with staff that are superbly patient with a large crowd of children. Highly recommend Setton Hackney Stables for anyone that wants to take children on a fun outdoor trip. My large group enjoyed the horseback riding, pony rideS, pony and carriage rides and hay ride. In January 2022, I provided a google review about our unpleasant experience in this place, which can no longer be found. My original post was longer with details. I think a shorter one will do the same job: 1. During our first class, Coach J scolded my 5 year old daughter with unprofessional words and manner. While there were so many ways she could have handled it with a growing mindset, she chose to ashame my daughter in front of all her classmates and parents, at least 20 people. I was with my daughter. I still regret that I did not stand up just because I did not like to confront people. My daughter was very frustrated back to the car. 2. J bragged to the other volunteer girls how she taught a lesson to "that Asian girl". I accidentally heard her talk and was shocked. She continued speaking to me with a condescending attitude. 3. I brought it up to their manager Marc, that "Asian girl" talk was not acceptable. Marc responded to me that after talking to J, they thought that "Asian girl" was not meant to be in a pejorative way. Obviously my complaint was never addressed. 4. I was there the whole summer. I did not see any apology from beginning to end. Nor did I see any thoughts to improve the professionalism and awareness of ethnicity at work place. On the contrary Seaton management were quite proud of their values. read more

I purchased a Groupon for 3 private half hour lessons for $80. It was a huge bargain. Kelsey was my instructor. She was a very good teacher. Very patient and encouraging. I give her 5 stars. I read some of the reviews about this place and was really irritated by one of the recent "bashing" reviews. I've been riding here for three years. I'm an adult, not a kid. That review was clearly written by one of the riders who left to "further her riding career" with the two instructors who enticed the "most experienced" riders (all of 12-16 years of age, mind you) to leave with them. I highly doubt we will see those "experienced riders" in the Olympics or anywhere else for that matter. Given that I'm a bit older and definitely "more experienced" that those little girls who left, I can vouch that the horses are well taken care of and definitely not overworked. If anything, they were over-jumped by the two previous instructors leaving the horses injured and lame until the owner caught on and limited the time a horse could be used for jumping...something that ticked off those "more experienced" 14-16-year-olds. If you want to become an Olympic rider, most likely neither Seaton Hackney nor any other barn in NJ will do that. However, Seaton Hackney is a great facility to learn how to ride, to have your children do something healthy, and to enjoy horses. I was there today and it's never been busier. The place runs better, too. As an adult, I like the way the barn fosters responsibility in the younger volunteers--a lesson obviously lost on that other reviewer during her time spent at this facility. P.S. First off let me say that I never went to this place. I called the establishment for an inquire on this place from a groupon I saw. First off the person who answered the phone was extremely rude. He had a french accent. Anyway, I called asking if I had to reserve a spot and what times are available. This person had the ordacity to tell me he doesn't have time to explain this to me. The stables are rebuilt, the footings are replaced, and the place is very nice. Yes, it can be crowded on the weekends, and yes, the office space is very small, but my daughter has fun every week for her private lesson. A mother of four grown children, I randomly decided to take riding lessons.  In May I came to Seaton Hackney for one half hour lesson and knew immediately I was going to have to come back to do this again and again! I started with a half hour lessons once a week and now I take half hour and hour lessons twice a week. I cannot even express in words how my lessons with Liz and Frank have changed everything for me.  The balance of having lessons with both these incredible instructors is beyond what I could have imagined.  They make every lesson different and incredible!  Between Liz's analogies and Frank's easy and direct instructions, they both make sure I never get "in my head" and I "just ride"!!! What a great feeling learning something new and improving if even only a little bit each and every time.  And what a compliment to these instructors for being able to translate their skills and experiences to their students.  They know my capabilities, my fears, my strengths and weaknesses and my potential and with that I learn and grow with each lesson....And when they ask if I had fun, I say "hell yeah" My family no longer thinks I'm crazy, they understand how incredible this is for me and how much fun I'm having. I used to ride, obsessively, in my pre-teen years (back before I discovered "romance," shall we say). Back then, nothing could get me off the back of a horse. I rode w/walking pneumonia, after being thrown & cracking some ribs, nothing could stop me. Then life happened & I ended up moving very far from the stable at which I had grown up riding. To be honest, I came across Seaton Hackney through their amazing Groupon offer (if it's still available, pick one up; it's well worth it). I had tried another stable's Groupon prior to finding Seaton Hackney, & I was sorely disappointed. Still, I was willing to try again... mostly b/c I desperately wanted to ride again. From the moment I arrived, the staff at Seaton Hackney made me feel right at home. We were joking around like old friends in a few minutes. As I was early, they invited me to look around & say "hi" to the horses. They have a wide selection of gorgeous animal, & it wasn't just limited to horses! There are chickens, goats, a donkey... all well-maintained & obviously well-loved. I had my lessons w/Frank & I plan on returning for a longer-term package ASAP. He was so encouraging, attentive, warm, & reassuring. I had a pretty nasty fall when I learned to canter originally &, when I told him, he made me feel like there was nothing to worry about &, w/his encouragement, he had me cantering along in less than a minute. I think he's absolutely fantastic & I can't wait until my schedule frees up enough to take another lesson under him. Finally, Levi is a fantastic horse. Frank made sure that I got to work w/this gentle quarter horse each of my 3 Groupon lessons. He was completely unflappable, albeit a little lazy (but I'd prefer that to a high-energy horse while I'm relearning all that I've forgotten in 15+ years), & had the smoothest, most rocking-chair canter I've ever experienced. I had been longing for the chance to ride a horse again after being absent from the sport for several years. I began riding while away at a college in Oklahoma. When I moved back to NJ I had almost forgotten about the great experience I previously had with riding horses. In my search throughout NJ and NY, I had tried various horse ranches but none of which were like SHS. I got an actual lesson and not a tour guided trail ride! My trainer was Nicole and she was beyond great! She took the edge off from being nervous about not having ridden in a while. Nicole was especially humorous as well as encouraging. The people that worked there were very welcoming. Although I enjoyed my session I was not super fond of having to use the community head gear. I was lucky enough to bring my hair cap to use underneath the helmet. I suppose, however, when I decide to sign up for more lessons, I will invest in my own personal horseback riding gear. A word of advice would be to not wear jeans and shoes with no more than a 1 to 1 1/2 inch heel. Jeans tend to be restricting so if you're serious about riding it is best to wear clothing that allows you to move freely (i.e. spandex/lycra, breeches, leggings, etc.) Finally, I have earned my riding points by not falling off, as I almost did. Haha ahaha! Yes, I almost fell off however, I saved myself that bit of excitement. Seeing that I have not ridden in a while, I did wake up the next day feeling pretty sore from having awakened my unused muscles in my core and thigh areas. I wear that pain proudly and look forward to returning to SHS for future riding experiences. By the way, they have a newer, much larger location in Flemington, NJ. It is a little over 100 acres, I believe. As of this date, that location is not yet opened as they are working on getting a few additional things up and running (i.e., water). For a person whose first time riding a horse, this place wasn't bad. My instructor was great. I arranged for my friends and I to do this for fun. A lesson/trail ride for an 1 hour cost $55, which isn't too bad. But my friends did say we could go elsewhere for cheaper. The location was easy to find in Morristown, NJ. The place does have animals so be prepared for the smell. It was pretty simple to make the reservations. I had to call with the names, height and weight of all my friends who were going to participate. When you get to the office, you have to sign a waiver and get a helmet. I am not sure how clean the helmets were though. Cons- The woman at the desk was not hospitable at all. She wasn't very inviting or welcoming. She didn't have change when I tried to pay off my balance since I paid the deposit via phone by debit card and she made no effort in trying to get any. She told me to go across the street to the deli. So when I went there, he said he was closed and had no change. SMH. I am not sure if they are used to taking large groups because we had 1 instructor to 3 of my friends and NONE of us has had ANY experience. My other friends had another instructor but the aides were not very friendly. We booked for 1 hour and I didn't feel that was enough time, by the time I got used to the horse, we were rushing back for her next appointment.Also, the saddle was extremely uncomfortable.. Pros- My instructor was great but I know we each were expecting more to the lesson/trail ride. The trail ride was nice, my horse, Clark, went into a nice trot and I didn't fall off, so I consider that a major accomplishment. The trail ride went off the property into the woods. My instructor also took some cool pictures of me with Clark. Although, the hospitality was poor. I rated them average because I liked my instructor, she engaged with us and made sure our safety came first. I am not sure If I would return here for another experience though. My daughter has been riding and volunteering at this stable for many years, it is our favorite place to be on the weekend and we enjoy talking to the staff. The trainers are very good and feel that really push the kids to there limits and challenge them to be better every day. I knew very little about horses -- 'still do -- but I know when I'm in the presence of professionals. I have yet to map out what's next with my daughter's riding but I so enjoy the Flex Camp, Summer Camp and occasional trail rides, and travel from Essex County to do so for her whenever I can. We've even attended SHS's Christmas party where I was like a kid, myself, feeding carrots and peppermints to the gorgeous animals. My daughter has gone rain, shine, cold, heat, New Year's Day, has done barn work, cared for and learned about the animals and calls it her "therapy". My 4 year old loves horses, and this is the only place I could find that has a program for her age! Now she's completely hooked. I called around to several places and found them all to be rude. With Seaton Hackney, I was able to email him and he responded very quickly - and he has been responsive with every email question since. At first they had the kids groom the ponies and then go for a ride, but then they started providing really good instructions. My daughter, myself, and my SO even are so much more comfortable around horses. We have had a great experience and I hope that it continues into her future. We are thrilled to have learned of Seaton Hackney Stables this Fall, even more so when we registered for classes. My 9-year old daughter is on her second session of Troop 1A classes, and she's enjoying every minute of the experience. The office staff is friendly, hard-working, and attentive. We felt welcomed from day one. The instructors are wonderful. They energize the riders, practice safety, are clear in their instruction, and make learning...fun. The younger volunteers are helpful and a good example for the young riders. The facility, the grounds, are nicely kept. Lastly, the horses are awesome, and well taken care of. We've come to know some of them by name. And we cannot forget the chickens, ducks, goats, ponies, etc... After a 30 year hiatus from riding, I decided to get back on a horse. The owner, manager and instructors and staff are all top notch. They all really care and take a personal interest in your goals and growth as a rider. As a western rider, there aren't many places in NJ that will cater to you. Marc and Seaton Hackney definitely is your place. The horses are all top notch and are all well taken care of. I have ridden several horses and have NEVER been disappointed.
