With remarkably attentive service, innovative presentation and cool decor, the whole was greater than the sum of its parts, by which I mean the dishes we had. The biggest winner was the thing with the ocean trout and some other exotic flavors. (It had a more exotic name than "trout" which is what was printed on the receipt.) The scallops and Brussels sprouts (prepared in the trendy way) were tasty, but others were just OK: - the wonton with "snake bean" - basically tasted like what American Asian restaurants usually call "red bean." - The duck money bags were fairly bland, but the duck bit on the side was tasty - Roti bread appetizer was probably both healthier and less tasty than the greasier versions I've had with richer cream curry sauces. The drinks were thoroughly excellent - both the cocktails (including the balanced, fresh-tasting "Trifecta") and the curated bottles including the red duck porter (wonderfully smokey) and the Napolean Pear cider (perhaps the best balanced cider I've ever had). Unfortunately we felt full after the above dishes so didn't get to try the others that tempted us (pastrami and pork belly) but would definitely come back here the next time in Melbourne. read more

Another amazing meal at seamstress! The first thing that strikes you is how friendly and helpful the staff are. We booked in advance for a group of four and were immediately seated. We began with cocktails. I can highly recommend the Boston cobbler. 2 of us ordered vegan and the other two took advantage of the full menu. The waiter went through our options but we knew from previous visits we were getting the house made red curry. Perfectly spicy with delicious squares of tofu fried with rice noodles. He also recommended we get the wontons. These were incredible! The wrapper was so silky and the snake bean and sweet potato filling amazing! It was drizzled with a sweet soy and vinegar sauce. These were a highlight. Other exceptional meals ordered this time were scallops (perfectly cooked), pork belly (crispy and delicious), wagyu beef (a must!), crispy crab legs, calamari curry, snake bean and broccoli side and caramelised eggplant and tofu. Asian fusion, coffee and cocktails - what more could you want? Seamstress is a gorgeous four level venue housed in a former textile factory. The street level houses the Drystore Espresso weekday-only cafe with a handful seats and sandwiches, catering for the corporate crowd. Down in the basement is the Sweatshop bar. Almost a polar opposite of the top level cocktail bar, it has the vibe of a classic "dirty but nice" basement bar. The first level houses the restaurant dining space and is in the style of a long dining hall filled with scattered tables. Finally, the second level is home to the cocktail bar. The more elegant level of the four, it has a mixture of coffee table-style seating and booths accompanied by leather armchairs and floor lamps. The building's previous use is maintained throughout the levels with clothing and tapestry hanging from the ceiling and sewing machines built into some of the tables. Dimmed lighting, exposed brickwork, unstained timber and chipboard furnishings add an element of what could be described as grungy intimacy. On this particular visit, the restaurant was fully booked but I was able to be seated at one end of the cocktail bar upstairs. The food menu is mixture of bar snacks, à la carte sharing plates and set banquets. The sharing plates are all available in three sizes, cater for varying party sizes, and is a creative mix of pan-Asian cuisine. Scallops, soft shell crab, duck, salmon, tofu red curry, wagyu - there's a dish for everyone. The kitchen prides itself on being vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and allergy friendly. The banquets comes in two choices and two sizes, 8 and 10 courses, and are a selection of the à la carte dishes. I went all out and ordered one of the 10 course banquets, for one. Seamstress's banquets are known to be huge and a bit of a challenge of sorts and the staff were a bit surprised when a solo person ordered one. Designed around sharing, the 10 courses are divided up into blocks of 2 or 3 dishes served at a time. The first set of dishes were Maple seared scallops with smoked rainbow trout, crispy shallots, apple salad and spicy nam jim dressing and Snake bean and golden sweet potato wontons with green pea purée. Tender, perfectly cooked scallops with a nice sweet and spicy accompanying salad. The wontons were also well cooked and full of flavour. These are two of the most popular dishes and are highly recommended to order when dining à la carte. These were followed by Crispy soft shell crab with apple and celeriac slaw and sriracha mayonnaise, Spice-rubbed Atlantic salmon with Thai pepper sauce, black rice and pineapple and sambal salsa and Roquette and broccolini salad with pickled ginger and tofu and tahini dressing. Another excellent selection of dishes with a tropical and spice theme, although the salad felt a little out of place. The final sets of savoury dishes was the Housemade red curry with kataifi-wrapped tofu, winter mushrooms, baby corn, Thai eggplant and bok choi, Honey soy braised wagyu shin with parsnip puree, crumbed cauliflower and vanilla caper salad and Caramelised eggplant with red miso and silken tofu sauce, crispy spice-crusted firm tofu and toasted sesame seeds. This is the point where the quantity of food started to feel a little overwhelming, but I pushed through. There is a bit of a tofu trend throughout the dishes and I'm not the greatest fan but still enjoyed it. The eggplant dish didn't seem to fit with this combination of dishes and could possibly have been served earlier on. Finally, there was not one but two dessert dishes, each served separately. There was the Lychee, plum wine sponge, raspberry coulis, popcorn sesame cream and yuzu curd and the Puffed rice coated banana fritters with dips of coconut anglaise, chocolate rum ganache and hazelnut praline. Two equally well presented dishes that were a perfect conclusion to a mammoth dining experience. After completing dinner, I enjoyed a few cocktails which the friendly bar staff made based on my desired tastes. Service throughout the night was excellent with staff explaining components of dishes as they came out and the bar staff providing welcomed banter. Seamstress is an intimate yet bustling venue that caters for any occasion with coffee, drinks and food on offer and is well deserving of its previously awarded titles of Cocktail Bar of the Year and Best Restaurant Bar. read more

This place is amazing!!! Highly recommended. I held an event last year for work and it was just fantastic from start to finish. They really get you and would go above and beyond for their customers (event). My first impression going up to the cocktail bar was rather strange but that's Melbourne (a bit on the quirky side) who doesn't look eating and drinking with dresses and pants hung up on top of your head? There's three levels that would suit all your needs. Casual bar downstairs, coffee-casual meals in the middle and cocktail bar upstairs. All unique depending on how you feel the night. The stairs a bit tricky though, make sure you hold onto the rails if you've got heels on! Food was amazing...the corn fritters was my favourite! Oh my giddy godfather, this place is soooo cute! Honestly, I don't normally love affectation in a bar, but this one is affected in exactly the right way to open my wallet. It's three levels: a fancy couch bar up the top, a kind of garage bar down the bottom, and a restaurant in the middle. I can't really speak to the restaurant, but the two bars are pretty damn cool. They're not unique in terms of their actual contents - there's nothing unsual on their drinks list, for example. The presentation for both the bars really helps in setting a mood - kind of intimate for the upstairs and a bit more raucous for the downstairs. Seriously worth checking out. read more

Have you ever been to a restaurant where you wanted more Brussels sprouts? Like, MORE Brussels sprouts?? Like, just give me ALL THE BRUSSEL SPROUTS NOW, PLEASE!?!?!? This gastronomic anomaly occurred when my beloved and I happened upon Lonsdale Street's Seamstress Bar & Restaurant, one chilly Wednesday night in search of pre-comedy festival gig dinner. We were greeted at the door by a blonde bombshell in a leather jacket, who was dubious about the likelihood of our securing a table sans-reservation. In turn, we were equally dubious towards the notion that any place, anywhere, ever, could be booked out on a gloomy Wednesday night (honestly, who does anything more exciting than vacuuming the bedroom on a Wednesday night???). Anywho, we got in by the skin of our teeth, which [finally] brings me to my point- bookings are a must, must, MUST if you plan to dine at Seamstress. So a pan-Asian restaurant based in the Chinatown district that's chockas on a school night would have to be pretty good, no? Let me assure you, it WAS pretty good! It's the little refinements and quiet innovations that really set this restaurant apart- eschewing the usual entrée-main-sides song & dance, Seamstress wants to tailor your dining experience to your needs (much like applying for Home & Contents insurance) - the warm staff expertly interprets the portion size, timing and variety of your meal by nutting out the size of your party, the intensity of your hunger, what foods you generally like and if you have anywhere to be later on. Of course, this all lends itself to a most satisfying speculation of a bespoke banquet, but remember that relinquishing all control of the ordering = relinquishing all control of the bill- larger parties beware! We tried a little bit of everything, across the animal/vegetable spectrum and everything was consistently well timed, perfectly portioned and COMPLETELY DELICIOUS! I think I may have mentioned before that the Brussels spouts were rather good... So we arrived unexpectedly, we ate enthusiastically, we left perfectly satisfied- so satisfied that we returned a few weeks later to celebrate my 30th birthday in one of two cocktail bars that Seamstress proudly boasts. For those of you [extremely patient] readers who are thinking about organizing a private soiree for a special occasion, I simply cannot recommend these guys highly enough. Unlike most inner city function spaces, you won't be asked for a minimum bar tab of $4000, cleaning fee of $100 and your first born child- in fact they won't ask you for any down payment at all, excepting the promise that you'll bring enthusiastic patrons to their fine establishment for a night of fun, frivolity and a damn good playlist. And their cocktails! THEIR COCKTAAAIIILS- just sublime! What else can I say? The décor is gorgeous, but not distracting and completely atmospheric. They take your coats for you, which made me feel like a proper lay-deh. Every staff member I dealt with in person or via email was genuinely delightful. I'm gonna shut up now. Not only are the staff helpful enough to squeeze you in between reservations if you need a quick pre-event meal, but I haven't yet found a dietary requirement they can't cater to. Somehow they manage the latter even without notice. The restaurant itself is super gorgeous and works the name "Seamstress" (it used to be a textile factory) into the fitout... think antique sewing machines in little nooks, spools of thread as wall art and that sort of thing. As for the cuisine... I'm not sure what to call it. Asian fusion, perhaps? At any rate, it's delicious and that's sort of what matters most. We're talking dishes like braised pork belly with drunken potatoes, twice-cooked five spice quail and sneak bean + golden sweet potato poached wontons. Stop drooling and start booking. You may need a while to appreciate the menu, and when you're finished it's just a flight of stairs to their cocktail bar, Sweatshop. Oh! I almost forgot! On weekday mornings you can walk past Seamstress and grab an incredibly good coffee from the window of their kitchen (you'll need to look up, at 5'8" it's still above my head height). A three story venue, Seamstress is home to two cocktail bars and an Asian Fusion Restaurant. I've had pretty varying experiences at all three, but overall it's a decent stop in. Upstairs: I used to avoid this place as it was lovely, but always a tad too crowded. I recently discovered that if you go early enough and catch them in a quieter time, you can score a booth and it becomes an awesome place to catch up with friends for a drink. Decent cocktail, beer and wine list. Middle: The Restaurant. I'm not even going to bother with too much comment here as I haven't eaten here in well over a year due to the terrible service received the first time. Food was fine but just not in a hurry to return. Downstairs: My favourite part. The downstairs bar of Seamstress is less polished and a whole lot of fun. I've always had a good end to a night here. We once came here for birthday drinks on a quiet night (again, we must have been here were early!) and was able to fill it with our group. Made a great spot for people to pop in and out of during the evening. The small bites we ordered after a few drinks were delicious too, which makes it a great stop in on those after work boozy sessions when you forgot to plan what to do for dinner. read more

We went upstairs to the bar while we were waiting for our reservations from another restaurant and I am glad we did! The bar was an Asian fusion for cocktails and they also had regular cocktails. The service was nice and they had comfortable chairs! Some Asian bars have these stools that are so uncomfortable, but not this place! They want you to sit your big butt down and stay awhile. It worked. Two Old Fashioneds, a Rum Swizzle and a martini later we left our comfortable seats for our dinner reservation feeling pretty good! I will be coming back to try the food. read more

An enjoyable experience with excellent customer service. I spent Friday evening at Seamstress with a Hen's party of 10. We visited the lower bar for about an hour and then moved up to the restaurant for the $65 banquet, which after a bit of a wait, was sensational. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. They were quick to offer drinks as soon as glasses began to empty (even topping up water continuously). I felt very comfortable. The lower bar was incredibly dark but very nicely set out. There were high stools that I didn't attempt to climb and wooden crates with cushions. Lit candles surrounded us. The cocktail menu looked much smaller than the one I saw online, but the bar was extensive - I'm sure they could have whipped up anything. I settled on a Trifecta - vodka, lemon juice, elder-flower cordial and cucumber and mint. It was delicious. I don't usually go for cocktails but this I liked. Very refreshing. The bartender was LOVELY, we made small talk as he smashed mint and shook ice. It's nice to feel like you can talk to the bartender without bothering them, some can be snooty. After a little while, our table was ready. As an allergy sufferer, I alerted the restaurant that I would be gluten free and also, allergic to coriander. I had viewed the banquet menu online and it seemed EVERY dish was swimming in coriander, so I was nervous. The staff assured me that allergy awareness was their specialty. As it turned out, there was another gluten free in our group as well as a vegetarian and a pescetarian. We were served alternative dishes during the courses. After a little wait, it was now past 9pm, the entrees came out. I was thrilled to see scallops, however I was advised that they were covered in a coriander sauce and I would be brought something else. Sad face! Just don't tip the sauce on mine, okay?? Too late. Wantons were also served, however they also contained coriander and gluten. I was getting hangry at this point, so when I was served an alternative dish that was two leaves with a small amount of toasted coconut inside I was anything but thrilled. They were delicious yes, but at this point I could have eaten the ENTIRE BUSH! But after a few minutes of watching everyone else eating scallops the next course came out - soft shell crabs and was followed shortly by spicy salmon. I moved with lightning speed and felt much happier. Unluckily for the other GF sufferer, she didn't eat seafood. I greedily took her crab and salmon (they are tiny portions okay!?) After this, everyone else were served wagyu, curry and vegetables while my last dish was a portion of delicious pork belly. Possibly due to my extra serves, I was stuffed and cheerful but had to dash to my train before espresso martinis were served. My only reason for not really wanting to return was simply that the food disagreed with my stomach, giving me a miserable long weekend. Just a bit rich I think, however I guzzle chili oil daily so why now I am unsure! read more

We had dinner in the cocktail bar upstairs, the room is Nice and cosy, and rather quiet so perfect for A small Group dinner (4-5) The food is good although Nothing for mé really stood out: had the rôti with satay, betel Leaf with coconut, mapo tofu, green papaya and mango salad, pork belly, bbq chicken and Green veggies. The servir was really off though: we asked the waiter about the highlights of the menu and did not mention any, most dishes Come in différent portion sizes and they did not follow our recommandation (the Green Asian salad ended up super small when we got A hughe Plate of chicken we could not even finish), the waiter was not knowledgable about the wine list either ... So far this has been my favorite bar in Melbourne. The atmosphere is the best part: great decor and fantastic music. We only visited the bar and didn't go to the restaurant or sweatshop. The bartenders were very nice and attentive. The only negative was the specialty drinks are super expensive. I ordered the penicillin and my gf ordered el diablo. Both were good but nearly $20 each and no way worth it. After those drinks we moved to our staples. I ordered the red breast neat for me and a dirty Shirley for the lady. It was pretty empty when we went on thurs night. I'd like to go back when it's a little more busy. Definitley recommended especially for a date night. read more

From the moment my colleagues and I sat down to lunch, our waiter made it clear he was in a bad mood (either that or he's just an extremely rude person). Sadly things went further downhill from there... Asked our waiter how many dishes to order for 3 people. Told him what we were deciding between. 'That's up to you' he snapped 'everything's good - I helped design the menu!'. Yeah ok dude... just asking for your recommendation... acted like I was asking him to pick a favorite kid or something!! Duck curry was a small overcooked duck breast. Pork belly was again overcooked and tough as old boots. Sides of vegetables and rice never came. When I questioned this on leaving, waiter (who is apparently one of the managers here - wouldn't let him manage my business!) advised the side dishes were 'on the way', and they were supposed to come out after. Not sure why I'd want a side of veggies and rice after my main meal??! Didn't want to get into an argument with this guy, even though he seemed to be looking for one. Paid the bill ($75 for 2 small dishes and 2 glasses of prosecco) and left - never to return! read more
