The ambience was very social. Seemed like everyone wanted to be here as there was a wait list and very limited seats for walk ins. Make reservations! They also have a downstairs bar too with seating that was also booked and packed. Nice variety of dishes, chef curated plates that were visually pleasing to the eye. The drinks while good and unique were carefully measured and extremely small for the price points. 3 cocktails and I didn't feel buzzed. I feel like Australia is very big on preventing intoxication. One of the few places that had knowledgeable staff and to my surprise actually nice and welcoming. I tried the BBQ Salmon wrapped in a banana leaf, braised beef curry, and a couple of drinks. Rather your traveling or a local who hasn't tried this place, it definitely should be on your radar. Wowwww, I was visiting Melbourne for about 2 weeks and my cousin took me to this spot. It was sooo delicious and flavorful. I got the butter chicken, wagyu pad see ew, and the kingfish sashimi chili coconut thai and basil. Everything was literally 10/10, so flavorful, light, and perfect balance of everything. I was told by a former local that "Flinders lane has most of the famous and well known Melbourne restaurants- can be a bit more pricey but worth it for the experience- and that Chin Chin is a Melbourne icon on this street." I personally travel/eat out often and it's rare that I'm wowed by a single dish but the crispy barramundi, green apple, caramelized pork salad blew me away. I've never had anything like it. Service and ambience were standard! Edit: I came back two days later, got the "Chicken, lemongrass, spring onion, cashew, green nahm jim, and coconut salad" and it was equally amazing, this place is great. -came back a third time in the same week as I required more Chin Chin, for the dry red curry of roasted pumpkin, it was good but not mind blowing. Stopped by Chin Chin on a Sunday afternoon. The braised wagyu beef pad seuw was rich and satisfying, the wings were solid, and the BBQ king salmon in banana leaf was the standout. Tender, flavorful, with a good little spice kick. We must have been super hungry...I have no pictures. Like most Melbourne spots, the music was on point -- so good I actually hung around a few minutes after my meal to finish a song. Service was warm and easygoing. This is the only restaurant I was determined to dine at due to all the reviews. The larger tables were used for communal dining. We sat at a 2-top that was pretty close to our neighbors. Usually, I like to browse the menu beforehand and get an idea of what I may order. I couldn't find their menu on their website though. The best I could do was look at the one posted on Yelp over a year ago. I usually don't drink, but their cocktails sounded yummy with clever names. I had the "Thai After Time," and it was amazing! It was light and fruity, and I liked the egg white foam. We started with the miang of yellowfin tuna. I didn't know what miang was, but it meant food wrapped in leaves. The tuna sat atop two leaves. It was a small, but satisfying bite. We also had the chili salt chicken wings. They were crunchy and fell off the bone easily. As our main, we had a noodle dish- spicy pork belly stir-fry. The vermicelli noodles are different from the ones I'm used to. I liked the crunchy pork skin and rinds that was in the dish. Lastly, we had the stir fried broccolini and king brown mushroom. We needed the greens to balance everything out. Unfortunately, I didn't have room left for dessert. It was not a wallet friendly lunch, but we enjoyed our meal here. Great option in Melbourne that consistently impresses those visiting for the first time. The quality is always on point and their feed me options are always great value. A personal favorite is the Pad Seuw Wagyu. Those rice noodle rolls drenched in sauce are always a table favorite. We also enjoyed the cocktails and they have big velvet booths downstairs that are available for tables of six or more or for those with little ones. We came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We didn't have reservations, but the restaurant says it always welcomes walk-ins so we thought we'd give it a shot. Upon entering we could see the place was very happening. It was very lively and loud. The restaurant has seating inside, along a couple of bars, and outside. The outside seating is a bit quieter if that is what you fancy. We sat along the bar. The staff is very friendly. They offered to make any cocktail or mocktail one wanted. The restaurant offers a great selection of cocktails. We couldn't help but order one. I got a Nina flowers. It was a good balance of flavors. It wasn't overly sweet. The plates are great for sharing. You can get a few small plates to start and then move on to some of the bigger ones. That's what we did. We ordered the following: Pork roll-ups Tuna tartare Beef pad seuw Egg fried rice BBQ lamb and spring onion The pork roll-ups and tuna tartare were the smaller dishes. They had delicate flavors and were good for sharing with a couple of people. The roll-ups come with four pancakes. The pad seuw, fried rice, and lamb were the larger dishes. The pad seuw seemed to be the hit of the night. Everyone enjoyed the flavors. The bbq lamb was also delicious. The meat easily fell off the bone. I was apprehensive about the pickled cabbage, but it was a great addition to the dish. The fried rice was a great accompaniment to everything. Definitely stop in here for a meal. The food was terrible the only thing that was descent was the corn fritters but they were mushy in the middle and the brussel sprouts were ok. My companion literally spit the beef curry into her napkin. Then to add insult to injury we spent $115 USD on a plate of brussel sprouts and 2 corn fritters. This Thai style restaurant is said to be established in the heart of Melbourne for a long time. I could see the busy kitchen with Asian staffs and the floor managed run by some local Australian staffs and servers. We came in the peak of serving hours and was ushered to an open outside table with warm gas heaters, quick nice huh! We ordered the fixed menu for 2, at $88 dollar a piece. This Menu #3 is supposed to be the Daily Specialties, what is served is totally arranged by the chefs in the kitchen. Idk if I came here for the right reason since I just came here to eat when it's more like an Americanized Thai bar kind of restaurant. With that said, I asked the bartender what he would recommend and I got this noodle with shrimp and it was actually pretty. It's got a lot of "wok he" so I do find that pretty legit. It's got a good kick to it too. With that said, I definitely think it's more on the pricier side and the portion size is only okay for how much you're paying. This Thai fusion hipster-open-Kitchen restaurant with GoGo bar downstairs, was recommended to me by a dear friend. I'm normally, meh, about Thai food. And I wouldn't pay anymore then $12USD. But how glad I was, when we came to Chin Chin's to eat. It was just a little past 5pm when we went in. A lot of the tables were taken by blue collar workers probably enjoying themselves after a rough day. We were seated by the open kitchen bar. We gotta watch as the cooks moved furiously getting out the appetizer and salads out. They had, and used the mortar and pestle for their papaya salad! Our waitress explained the menu to us and gave us her recommendations. But we politely ignored her and went with our gut (and my friend's recommendation) instead. Crispy duck curry with coconut rice: Boneless. Crispy. Creamy. Coconuty. 10/10. I feel like I've never or will never have such delicious curry again ever. It was amazeballs. Served with a bit of pineapple and cucumber for a change in flavour and texture. Oh yah, there is lychee cooked in it too for that sweet floral hint. Coconut rice : Omg! I need to start making this at home! It was so good we had to add on another order! And we barely had any curry left! It's an up charge from the plain rice that they give you, but SOOO worth it. Chargrilled Wagyu ... salad: it's from the bbq part of the menu. We didn't expecting to be in a salad form. But it was perfectly cooked, sauces with peanuts and other amazing textures like green papaya and some other crunchy goodness. It had the flavours which Thai food should have (sweet, salty, sour, hot & slight bitter). We ordered a delicious lychee cocktail with a rose water round ice ball. It wasn't heavy handed like some drink. But retained the sweet flavours of the lychee fruit abs the subtle hints if rose. Chin Chin is the trendy restaurant to come for Thai-inspired dishes. The atmosphere is loud and lively, the service is amazing, the flavors are on point, and from my impression, the specialty here is meat! Most of the dishes on the large menu feature some sort of protein, from the appetizers and stir-fries to the curries. There's a whole BBQ section, and even most of the salads come with meat! Chin Chin doesn't take reservations and the restaurant can definitely see lines--but the food (somehow) comes out lighting fast from the kitchen, so tables can turn over quickly! On my visit for dinner, we started with the barramundi and crispy pork salad with green apple and peanuts. The dish consisted mainly of fried chunks of fish and pork in a tangy, salty, fish sauce-based dressing. The fish was tender and the pork was meaty--the green apple matchsticks and mint leaves made for such a refreshing pairing! We also had a side of stir-fried green beans with shredded coconut and a unique cashew sambal--nutty, spicy, salty, and delicious! But the dish that surprised me most was the Southern Thai curry with braised goat. I had expected this dish to be a rather soupy curry, but instead, it was just a huge pile of shredded goat meat in a thick, flavorful curry paste with peanuts and a sprig of mint on top. Uniquely, the thick, spicy curry came with a dab of minted yogurt on the side, which definitely wasn't authentic, but an extremely creative "fusion" condiment to lighten up the dish. On the side, we ordered a bowl of coconut rice, which had so much coconut milk that the grains of rice turned out to be soggy! For its creative takes on Thai flavors and great value, Chin Chin was one of my favorite restaurants during my visit to Melbourne. Our next choice was twice cooked beef short rib, that had a shaved coconut salad with basil and cilantro greens. The short ribs had well developed flavor, and fell off the bone with minimal prodding. When I asked the hostess how the long wait is, she instructed me that they had tables available down stairs! Came here twice because it's just that good! We stayed at the Grand Hyatt on Collins Street and Chin Chin was literally around the corner. Loud, hip, and full of vibrancy, it's a place to hang out and have a good time. The food is undeniably delicious. If you don't know what to choose, try the "feed me" option which is a pre-selected menu. How I miss their Thai Iced tea. Another spot that is sooooo good that they can sell their own cookbook! Very hip and nicely decorated place with a modern twist of Thai food. Everything was super tasty and flavorful, we got seated quickly, and the food came quick as well. Portion sizes were solid. We got the Pad Thai Noodles, Southern Thai Curry with Braised Goat, and the Green Papaya Salad. The Pad Thai Noodles had generous amount of chicken, a lot of peanuts to add to the crunch, and the dried shrimp and lime added a lot of flavor (the picture was taken after we demolished the awesome plating presentation). The southern Thai curry was my favorite! It wasn't a very soupy curry, but rather melt in your mouth braised goat that you can scoop in chunks similar to curry. There was good crunch from the peanuts, and my favorite component was the tartness and coolness that the yogurt on the side added. Definitely recommend this dish. Great place to try some fusion dishes. I recommend coming for lunch to avoid the long wait at dinner. The menu is split into a noddles section, green stuff (veggies with protein), curries and barbeque. We ordered a little bit of everything, don't remember the names of the dishes. Chin Chin is legitimately my favorite restaurant in the world. I first came here about four years ago and have been talking about it ever since. I ordered the Massaman Curry then and have been looking for something similar to it back home in NYC, to no avail. I ordered it again the second time I visited Chin Chin and it was as good as, if not better than, I remember it being. Everything in the posted photo is SO GOOD, but the Massaman Curry is out of this world -- the brisket is so tender and the coconut milk adds a bit of sweetness to the nutty curry that is to die for. You can eat the curry with jasmine rice, coconut rice, or roti -- either side you pick to accompany your curry, you're in for a treat. The atmosphere at Chin Chin is different depending on the time of day you go: it is very bright and chill at lunchtime, but is more hip and edgy at dinner. There can also be a long line if you go at a prime hour (weekend dinners), so be aware of that, though I will say that it is well-worth the wait. read more
