Melbourne night owl institution Supper Inn is one of Melbourne's night owl options - it stays open until 2 am! It can be found in Celestial Avenue - which sounds heavenly but in reality, is a slightly stinky laneway with a dumpster at one end. You have to queue on a narrow flight of wooden stairs to get into a dingy dining room. The specials plastered on the wall are not so special - they look like the same ones we saw on our first visit at least 15 years ago - but the food is delicious! Our coral trout was heavenly and we really loved our minced pork, eggplant and salted fish hotpot!! It's a super busy spot but the service is fast and friendly, and BYO is a plus!

Supper Inn is one of the places I will gladly queue for on any night. Walking up a poorly lit alleyway and up a small staircase you are met - most nights - by a long line of people anxious to get inside. Supper Inn is where the chefs, bar staff and waiters flock to after a late night shift. Open until 2.30 am most nights it might not look like much at all, but there's a reason why so many of us will wait on the steps for a table. Freshly fried garlic pepper squid, suckling pig in clay pot, tender tofu, and crispy-skin pigeon are just some of the delicacies you can sample inside. Prices are reasonable and there is a modest wine menu. The service is fast and efficient. The waiters run themselves ragged serving up delicious food all night and once you get in, you are very well taken care of. The charm of Supper Inn lies not in modern interior design, or edgy lighting, but simply in the food. While it seems chaotic, sit back and let the chefs work their magic. Who needs pretentious decorations and cuisine when simple, honest and affordable food tastes so good.

I'm not sure I'd be in the line of people queuing up to get into Supper Inn. Whilst it is definitely an institution in Melbourne, the one time I went I was not exactly blown away by the food. It was good don't get me wrong but not something I'd wait long for. I was late for the ordering stage of the meal with a group which was perhaps why it lacked something for me. There are a few restaurants in Chinatown which I'd prefer over it in terms of food including Ling Nam. Nevertheless, it would be wrong of me to pass judgement based on one experience. So for that reason, I'm still on the fence.

Still the same..

Very nice hongkong style restaurant at China town. We came here for dimsum and another day for…read moredinner. This is one of the well known chinese restaurant in Melbourne Chinatown. It is better to make reservations. For the dimsum I can say is average like other dimsum places I visited before. The menu is overwhelming. So many dishes to choose from. For dinner it was very nice as we had live crystal crab which I never had before. The meat is soft. The other dishes which good is the beef cube. It was so tender. The shark fin soup which is banned in US is good. Price wise, they are pretty pricey. Overall it was a good lunch and dinner

It's always…read morecomforting to have some Chinese food while abroad, and this place got the stamp of approval from 3 generations of my family!! The service was great our waiters helped us accommodate a disability within my family and recommended us some great dishes. However, the restaurant is upstairs and the elevator was broken, which made it difficult for us to get up. The food: -Seafood fried rice: Really flavorful, with generous portions of dried scallop and crab. The rice was cooked just right and the serving was big enough that for a party of 3, we had quite a bit leftover. -Snow pea leaves in garlic: A favorite vegetable of mine, and this was cooked in an amazing garlic-y soup!! Such a clean and delicious dish -Egg tofu: This was my first time having egg tofu and they were so silky and smooth. They look a bit like scallop and are served with a good amount of broccoli and mushrooms! Honestly really addicting. - Steamed trout: This fish was very pricey, but that's normal for a live fish dish. It was huge- definitely enough to serve a party of 5-6. The fish was cooked to perfection and the sauce paired amazingly with the mild trout flavor. Highly recommend if you're feeling like splurging! This place is also nice, quiet, and clean inside during dinnertime. Really amazing experience overall!
