I loved the pottery shop and was peeking into the studio area- Ben was in there working and came out to chat with us. I had already picked out a couple pieces of pottery from inside the shop. And I was greeted at the shop door by Elvis meowing at me! I reached down to pet him and the girl working the shop told me he was begging for food. Lucky Elvis, I had kitty treats in the car! John chased me into the store when he saw me grab the cat treats, lol. I was able to shop while John fed and pet Elvis! Win, win. I made sure to take plenty of pictures & it turns out- my professor had met Ben when he was in graduate school. Pottery makes for a small world! A must stop on the pottery trail through Seagrove!

I met Nicole back in March, I was visiting Seagrove for NC Potters Conference. They had a meet…read morelocal artists night at the local wine bar and I was chatting with another local when Nicole arrived. She was in the brink of opening her own studio and shop! I followed her on IG & was returning in June for a birthday trip, so I made a mental note to make it to her place. I met her dogs, chickens, ducks & even gave her hubby some tips since he was learning how to turn pots. I bought a lovely dish from her then. Fast forward, I'm still following her on social & a that she has a new goal of building a new studio and shop bigger and better on her family property across the street from the current location. Move that goal post, chase that dream! So, Nicole is using clay from her property to make mugs that she uses a technique called sgraffito, carving through underglaze. She carved these cabin mugs as her vision for the new place and every one of those mugs sold is going directly into the build fund. Her goal, make and sell 100. I'm a very passionate person about the arts, ceramics. I also love connecting with people and adore seeing what other people's dreams are, what they are passionate about. Displays explained how pottery evolved through time, construction methods, and glazed. My wife is a potter so I knew much of the information. The anagama kiln and the new one being built out back are impressive. The studios for processing the local clay, throwing and glazing all had individual spaces in historic buildings. I fist loved the chime bowls hanging out front on the porch, the shelves outside full of the sons work. Inside I was stunned by beautiful artistry. I love trees and that was a continued theme in this shop. The soul bowls were lovely too- a concept beautifully brought to realization by the artist. The behind the scenes tour was just the icing. I bought 2 pieces and struggled immensely trying to choose. One carved tree wall plaque and one woodfired bottle with a tree carved in.
