In all honesty, I have been on the hunt for good British-style fish and chips that are authentic to the good old stinky yet delicious British chippie that I grew up with for many years. While Sea Witch does not deliver that local smelly chippie experience, it is the best fish and chips combo that I have had in Toronto thus far! The halibut is firm and meaty and the haddock flaky and flavourful. The batter is noticeably crispy and not too thick. The chips are respectable i.e. thick, hand-cut, and with potato skin. They're not smothered in salt and vinegar or wrapped in "newspaper" like the Brits do it but they are satisfyingly fresh and chunky. The tartare sauce provided is a good portion with less pickle. The tomato sauce is less sweet and a bit more sour than Heinz. The gravy is a pleasant surprise and works well with the chips. The interior is unique; a fusion of the open kitchen, a bar, and church pews repurposed into dining benches. So yes the Sea Witch may look a bit kooky but it lures you in with some spell-binding fish and chips read more

This year I was craving fish and chips for new years and so hubby and I decided to try Sea Witch for the first time. We ordered the weekly special of fish and chips - the perch, the halibut cakes with onion rings, the witch's brew, and slaw. Note: the fish and chips only come with tartar sauce and no small side of slaw like some other places so if you want slaw then you need to order it separately. We had take out but popped it in the air fryer and it tasted as crisp as it can be so no complaints there. On the food itself, first of all, the fish and chips. The weekly special was a great choice and I'd say the quality and taste of the crispy perch was one of the highlights of the meal. The fries were not something I was fond of. Although I enjoyed the texture of the fries (big fries that were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside), they were overly salted to the point where I had to rub off the salt on each fry after each bite. They did give a generous portion but the way they were salted made them hard to eat. By the end of the meal, my salt receptors were going haywire and my whole meal tasted salty which did sour the experience. Before the salty mishaps, the onion rings were good and probably one of the best I've had although they did end up tasting too salty at the end as well (it might have been just the effect the fries had on my taste buds though). I also loved the halibut cakes, very well seasoned and fresh halibut taste, but it comes off as more dry as I expected it to come with some sort of sauce. It does come with pickled onions which made for an excellent combination but we had to buy an extra tartar sauce for the cakes to lessen the dryness. The witch's brew I'd say is not my favorite - I'm personally just not fond of non-creamy clam chowders. And the slaw is okay but slightly too tart. The homemade tartar sauce is disappointing as it was watery and bland. Despite these mishaps, I would definitely want to try it again as the fish itself and halibut cakes were amazing. The main staff are very knowledgeable, although, I believe the person battering and frying the fish that day was still relatively new. Purely speculation though. They offer four types of fish: Halibut ($26) , haddock ($17.50) , trout ($18) and pickerel ($19) . Opting for a white fish but still trying something new, I went for the pickerel. I thought that despite the thick batter, the fish was actually quite well seasoned and the fries weren't too bad either, although inconsistent. We've been ordering take out from Sea Witch over the past year, and it's always been a treat every time! The portions of both the fish and chips are generous, the coleslaw is good, and the Witch's Brew (chowder) is very flavourful. My only small gripes are that the fries are sometimes over salted (though not an issue since we can't finish all of it in one go anyways) and that it's a little pricey - though both of these are non-issues since the star of the show always tastes scrumptious. I'd recommend this place for some nice fish and chips if you're in the area, it's pretty good. read more

On my search for the best fish and chips spot in the GTA area. It brings me here to Sea Witch. On all the glowing reviews and top lists for fish and chips in the city. First the packaging is ok. Packaged in a poutine box. It did get soggy but I can live with it. Note: "Recommend all fish and chips establishments to package in paper box and wrap in paper " Another positive is they give loads of fries. Portion wise, I'm satisfied and fish is a good size as well. Again another plus is they make homemade tartar as well all should. The tartar was one of the best I've ever tried. On to why this is only a 3 star place for me. I ordered Halibut and chips and 2 pc Cod and chips. I was pleased with the Halibut. Nice solid white fish. Must be a good supplier. The Cod on the other hand was a bit fishy tasting, not to my liking. However the batter on both fish was nice, flaky and crispy. On to the fries, I did say it was a great portion size but it was overly salted and way too much salt. For these reasons, I would rank Sea Witch in the middle of the pack compared to other places. 3 stars for my visit. A little above average. But would recommend other places first before here. My spouse and have have been fans of Sea Witch since it opened. We would regularly go pick up a two piece order of haddock and fries. We've tried all the notable fried fish places in Toronto and Sea Witch is hands down our favourite place for fish and chips. Their fries are clearly fresh and always delicious. The breading on the fish is perfect; it's crisp and light without being cakey. We ordered Sea Witch for delivery and I was ordered the order wouldn't travel well. It did! It arrived warm! The first few bites (or really, chomps, since those are big-sized portions you're diving into) were awesome - the fish was fresh and 'juicy', while the batter tasted almost like unsweetened crispy donut (a good thing). So after the first few bites, I was all ready to give Sea Witch a 5 star rating and anoint it as one of the best fish and chips places in the city. And maybe it still is for some people. But after getting through maybe a third of my haddock, and after my wife got through a third of her cod, we were just so overwhelmed by the amount of batter and ready to give up. Now I know I said the batter tasted good, but this was a bit too too too much. We ordered the slaw on the side (not bad, not amazing) and started wolfing it down just to get a different taste, but the batter wouldn't be defeated. The reason for my review on this place is that I was shocked to Sea the meagre size of the Halibut portions I was given in my most recent order. It was very noticeable. This establishment was kind of a gem to find, probably from the tree that was blocking the sign. So I came here from hearing about people talk about a good fish and chips in the Toronto West End. I was saddened to notice that Sea Witch ADDS approximately three dollars to EVERY piece of fish you buy when you have food delivered by Skip the Dishes, etc. $3 more than the price on their website. $3 more than I assume you pay if you call Sea Witch directly and order and pickup yourself. I recently ordered 3 pieces of fish, no French fries, and some breaded mushrooms, and I paid over SEVENTY DOLLARS!!! I DO understand that Uber Eats and Doordash etc are really messing over the restaurants, taking up to 30% of the cost of the order from the restaurant, but I paid ten dollars more charged by Sea Witch for this order, PLUS a $4.49 delivery fee plus tip of over five bucks, so getting delivery from Sea Witch cost me twenty dollars on top of the normal cost of the food. I'm sorry, but this is too much - and this BUGS ME! Update: This place is usually amazing. Great fish and the BEST rings you will ever have - anywhere - by far, and they now have deep fried breaded mushrooms, and they have AMAZING tartar sauce, and dill dip too. $80 and we left hungry. Fish and chips are a fav in our clan. We hail from Seattle and Alki Spud is the world's gold standard on this amazing category of "street cuisine". Just wait until you're in a city that understands this and don't visit Sea Witch. It separated from the the enormous amount of batter applied, almost immediately. This might have been lucky - it revealed that the fish inside was old and hard and had been retrieved from its home in the cooler where it surely sat with no protection for some time. It was hard and chewy and frankly, frying and serving it, was simply inexcusable. No one who saw this piece of fish had any business serving it. This is what they think of their customers. We were a party of 4. My 3 compatriots had slightly better luck or were just hungrier, and I didn't want to cause a stir. I just ate a few onion rings and called it a day. Those were also super greasy and over battered. When the server finally asked if the meal was ok, it was over and I had eaten nothing. She scolded me. Let me repeat that. Really cool little place for fish and chips in Toronto. We were done with the tour at Casa Loma stopped in here and were pleasantly surprised. The restaurant was very clean and orderly. The staff was really friendly. Being 3 something in the afternoon, we were the only patrons in the restaurant but I imagine things operate the same even when they're busy. We got the Haddock and chips and an extra side of onion rings. The haddock filet was big enough for the both of us to share. It had great flavor and was perfectly crisped. I treated a friend out to dinner here. Sea Witch specializes in fish and chips, it is a small business with the owner working on-site and cooking! We ordered the halibut cakes for appetizers. I love these - very fresh and the perfect size! I ordered the cod which tastes more buttery. My friend ordered the classic Haddock fish and chips. We also got gravy on the side. The portions were MASSIVE... so much food... it was perfect. I recommend sharing these meals! The coleslaw was new to me, it was very purple and leaned towards the sour side. Very different. The BEST service! Our server was very knowledgable, she explained the differences in the types of fish and taste to expect from them. It was incredibly helpful! One of the cooks were slicing potatoes into French fries, this attracted some kids. It was adorable as he explained his process to them. The owner was very friendly!! We ordered a haddock 2 and 1 - two pieces of fish and one chip. This is awesome, cause I always find chippys give you too many chips and it's impossible to finish. The batter was great, not too crispy and not too overpowering and leaving no fish. Some other reviewers here say the batter is too thick. It's not, don't worry. Salty Witch. The batter for the fish is very much overly salted and HEAVY. I ended up literally scooping a teaspoon amount of fish out of the batter carcass. The onion rings have a lighter batter, but still a pinch of salt more than I'd prefer. The poutine is another heavy component to the meal. Out of every component, only the witch's brew chowder is delicious and filling. Also, I love the boylan black cherry soda. Loved it so much, I bought 2 to take home! If you're serviced by the larger waitress, then expect a longer wait time and some attitude. She actually ignored and put off my table while my companion tried to get her attention. The owner of the restaurant is a kind, young lady with a charming attitude and a speedy response. She ended up servicing us after we were very obviously ignored by the larger waitress a few times. I got invited to a media tasting at Sea Witch (@seawitchfc) on St.Claire West and frankly I pass by so many times but never notice this place before. The small neighborhood restaurant has a very simple menu with 5 fish of fish & chips or sandwiches to choose from (Halibut, Pickerel, Haddock, Cod and Arctic Char). Nothing fancy, just a few sides to choose from. Chef & Owner Kevin Kowalczyk spent many years at Penrose Fish & Chips, so he knows a thing or two about fried fish. All the fish are fried and fries are fried in beef tallow here, the secret to the golden crisp batter. Although the entire place look like reclaimed wood / furniture, love the contrast of the red tiles at the front which make a perfect backdrop for the fish & chips. The Witch's Brew (House Chowder) $6 ~ This was definitely the star of the night which was filled with big chucks of fish and not too thick not too thin. Halibut Fish & Chips $15 ~ Halibut will always be the classic choice for fish & chips. The batter on mine was rather soggy and the fish a little bit overcooked but when I asked others, theirs was perfectly crispy so I guess it was just my luck. ~ Fried old school style with beef tallow for extra flavor. ~ Apart from halibut, you can also choose from Pickerel, Haddock, Cod and Arctic Char. Although they try to be Ocean Wise as much as possible, it is just not possible for the complete menu keeping the price in mind. Home made cookies at $5 per pack. This is the best Fish and Chips in Toronto! Their sandwich combining the crispness with the tarter + pickled onion flavor is awesome!

Stopped in for some take-out, but ended up eating in. Atmosphere is cute & homey, with an open kitchen, which was bustling with take-out action the entire time we were there. I had the halibut and my husband had the haddock. I love the sweetness halibut has, and the batter was not overpowering to this somewhat delicate fish - husband liked the haddock very much. Tartar sauce is fresh & tastes homemade, which is a HUGE plus for me! Will definitely be back through the winter, I really liked eating it fresh & hot (most fish & chips are take out, or outdoor seating). Prices are pretty good. Went on Sunday for lunch and found this place to be just Meh. The place wasn't even busy, was able to walk in and sit anywhere. The lightening in this place is kinda dim. The menu variety was great offering different types of fish along with the pricing. However, my favourite, Halibut was marked with "MP" which means monthly pricing i think. Halibut Fish & Chip was $17! kinda pricey if you ask me but i was optimistic about it. The Halibut Two & One which consisted of 2 fish and chip was $30! (which is what i ordered lol). I found the chips to be just mediocre and some of it salty. I guess they didn't toss it around properly or long enough to get the salt evenly. The fish portion was quite small and had lot of batter on it. It was nice and hot but not dripping with oil which sometimes happen. My friend got fish and onion rings for his meal. The presentation of onion rings was neat as they stack the onion rings on top of each other. However, the onion rings were covered in a lot batter and the onion itself was a small very thing ring. On Saturday, May 18, 2019 around 115 pm I was visiting Toronto with my son and his wife we took a walking tour and my kids wanted to surprise me with a different restaurant. I was surprised to see was a fish and chip restaurant as I am from Nova Scotia and we have some pretty good fish and chip places However I was in for a treat! When we went in the place was packed it looks very clean and inviting so we decided to wait for a table which was going to be about 20 minutes so we do a little walk around the block. When we got back our table still wasn't ready but they served us water and let us sit at the bar stools by the window and gave us menus to look at. Where we were sitting we could see the cooks preparing the orders --And it was all done Fresh no pre-cooking plus homemade fries. When our table was ready we moved to a comfortable booth. I ordered the cod and homemade fries And my son ordered the pickerel and Onion rings My daughter in law order the haddock and homemade fries. The portions are huge and the fish was very tasty and the batter was out of this world on the fish and onion rings. And I have never been served fish and chips so hot. I like my food hot it rarely happens in a restaurant. All the staff were friendly and helpful and were serving people in a professional manner I also observed that as soon as table left They made sure they swept around the tables. Always nice to see a clean restaurant I rarely say this but I wish I could give them more than five stars well worth a visit !! read more
