After six or so visits to this place with consistent results, I've decided the following two things: 1) it's got phenomenal inventory, which moves fast so buy it if you like it. Hence, the two stars. But 2) be prepared to be treated like you smell bad, or are bad, or are just generally in the staff's way. (Not all of them, but def the majority) Hence, only two stars. It's such a shame. I literally steel myself for the openly crap attitude I always, always receive. I've bought something every single time I go in, so it's not like there's any reason at all for me to have to field this. I wear deodorant and normal clothing, I have no small children in tow, no dog in arms, nothing. It's inexplicable, but I could set my watch by it. If you'd like to find some pretty, often unusual, (though admittedly sometimes overpriced) things, go here! Just make sure you get something cool enough to wash the taste of the customer service interactions away when you look at it later -- because when you leave you're likely to feel like you just drove through Taco Bell on Poplar in Memphis at 2 am. Pretty sure that's where they found their customer service manual. If you make it past the front desk without turning into a shriveled block of ice, don't miss the fabulous large COVET booth just inside the first display area. That booth in particular has amazing finds at fair prices. read more

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!! I live in Asheville and visit this store frequently because of the merchandise but I SO wish the checkout desk was in the back so I didn't have to walk by these people on the way in and get looked at like I just walked in a funeral home. They are not welcoming or even cordial. I buy something almost every time I go there but its not because of the owner or workers. Its because the vendors have good stuff. My dad looked up antique/resale places to visit while we were visiting Asheville and this one came up in his search. It is located off the main road into Asheville before you enter Biltmore Village, up on a hill. It has a large parking lot that it shares with the connected bookstore - plenty of spots for both. This is another place where it houses multiple stalls under one roof and you pay for the items you want at the front. Sometimes the vendors visit their stalls to rearrange things or to add new items and are usually happy to answer questions. You can find a mixture of items from new, vintage, and upcycled things. Wow. If you want to buy something here good luck with the front desk. Rude, so disinterested and unhelpful. We found something we had questions on and wanted to make an offer on something. The person at the front desk said she would not call the booth owner, and would not give us her contact information. She was there to only take the transaction price on the ticket. No questions about the owner the booth or the items in any booth could be answered. We asked if we could leave a note for the owner. I'm not holding my breath on hearing back. My husband and I went here for the first time this past weekend and absolutely loved it!! It's open, well lit, clean and very organized compared to most antique malls. The prices are very fair. We certainly didn't leave empty handed. We found an old German typewriter from 1926 and globe from 1940. Not to mention the beautiful glass Japanese floating balls and some whiskey bottles. This is one of the hippest and best antique/vintage malls I've ever visited! Chock full of treasures, including antiques as well as recycled, re-imagined found art. A few contemporary hipster items as well. Prices vary by booth, but are generally competitive, not exorbitant. One display took my breath away: two trees (really just giant dried branches stuck in the floor to look like trees) holding 30 or 40 of the loveliest hanging plants, tillandsia, which apparently require only a wire and a humid spot to hang (no pot, no dirt). I scored a planter, a sweet travel scrabble set, and a little bottle that had been configured into a garden lightning bug, complete with iron wings and washers for eyes. If you like being talked down to or treated like you're bothering the staff, you'll love it here. If you are in the store within 30 minutes of closing time, prepare to be reminded that they are closing soon at least 5 times from different employees as they try to shuffle you out the door at quarter till closing. Unfortunately, they have some great stuff in here. As long as you don't mind being condescended to or treated like you're wasting the staff's time by existing, you might find something nice. read more

A giant eclectic store full of antiques and art, books, records, local products. However what they make up for in size and variety they seem to lack in goodwill. I tried chatting and paying them a compliment and they just ignored it. I saw TWO other people try the same and nothing. Just flat awkward silence, like an episode of the British Office. The reason the Screen Door does not have FIVE stars is because of the staff. They are so rude. I've been going there for 14 years because I love, love, love the Screen Door, but I cringe every time because I know how I'm going to be treated at the check out. There have been, off and on, very friendly staff but most of the time they act like they are doing you a favor at the check out. But I still love the Screen Door. You've find things there that you won't find anywhere else. Advise: Ignore the rudeness, and enjoy the store. read more

Purchased a beautiful silver soldered bowl and platter. It was marked $11 and it was paid for with a credit card. Shame on me for not looking at the total price when we sign the credit card signature screen. This was the only item purchased in with tax it should've been just under $12. However, my credit card statement reflects a total charge over $19. Looking back, the man and woman at the register seem to be distracting my husband and I. I would love to give this five stars: the layout is organized, very clean, and the store has an excellent selection of great goods for different tastes. They offer shabby chick to mid century modern throughout this space. The only thing lacking is the customer service (and it's a bit overpriced). We felt a bit unwelcome, almost like we were inconveniencing the people working there. Quirky, funky, creative. The ScreenDoor is a bit overwhelming, but worth the experience. There were numerous antique booths at the ScreenDoor that both my husband and I loved. They ranged from rustic to specialty to mid-century modern. There were also numerous crafts booths that we could have done without. I'm a huge fan of this type of store. I will definitely go if I make it Asheville way again. And my guess is I'll then move it to a 5 star since I will know our fun visit wasn't just a fluke.... :) read more

What a wonderful place to get lost! I visited The Screen Door for this first time over the summer, and I can guarantee that it won't be my last. This place is huge and it was really difficult to narrow down my options-I wanted it all! I could have (and believe I did) spend hours here, but I finally settled on a "Bee Box" by artist Simone Wilson, a piece I will cherish for decades to come. Plenty of beautiful originals works (furniture and decor) along with a collection of fine antiques. Oh! And you might run into Jennifer Carpenter here! I sure did! read more

I adore this eclectic shop and visit often. Be aware that customer service is not their strong suit. The people at the front desk are there to take your money, period. They are generally pleasant enough but don't expect any help navigating the store. This week I called to ask if a particular item I was interested in was still available. This was not a little tchotke -- it was a recliner chair. Not really hard to spot in the store. The person answering the phone said she had no idea if it was still there. Period. I was a little taken aback and asked if there was anyone else I could speak to. She said flatly, no. "You'll have to come in and look for yourself." Well all righty then. Just a LITTLE courtesy would have helped -- "I'm sorry I can't help you with that" would have been nice. I'll still be a customer -- it's a great place -- but the call definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

This is a cute place. There are deals to be found if you look. I found a swing arm desk lamp for $20. Was it vintage? No but you would have to look at it real closely to notice. It will be perfect on my vintage desk. At it is way more inexpensive than anything from Ikea or Rejuvenation lighting. The Screen Door is one of my favorite places to browse in Asheville. It's basically a big warehouse that individuals rent out & fill with their own art or antiques or clothing or fun stuff. I always find something I love. It's a great place to find original gifts. I've never been there when it's been overly crowded either. Go here for sock monkeys, old albums, cowboy boots, pottery, photography, and funky household decor. love it! read more

The antiques are wonderful, but overpriced. Some gems in the mix, though, if you look hard enough. Do NOT expect any sort of discounts on prices, like a standard 10%, because as we were told "This store is run like a retail store, prices aren't negotiated". This included a big ticket item. The biggest disappointment is the staff. They seem uninterested in helping and easily frazzled. We were told that we had to move any furniture by ourselves through the store full of expensive and breakable things. Luckily for the booth owner we really wanted the piece we bought, because if it had been based on the attitude of the workers we would have left our pricey item there. read more

This place is straight up awesome. I go here primarily to boost my vinyl collection because one of the small shop spaces inside this consignment/thrift mall has great old classic rock albums for cheap! I always end up blowing more cash than I expected to spend when I come here because the place has a way of parting you with your money. I bought one of those metal animals here last time I was here - you know the ones that are made from recycled materials like a lizard with a bike chain for its tongue? Yeah, this is where you can buy stuff like that. They have a bookstore area too, but trinkets and knick-knacks rule the day. I could go on and on about just how unique and eclectic this place is. This place has a great mix of antiques, vintage furniture, modern Furniture & décor and eclectic art pieces as well as repurposed that are one of a kind plus they have a great Bookstore. We found a great mid century chair that the wife needed ;-). Why 3 stars? Dealt with 3 employees and all 3 had a very unwelcoming (2 worse than the 3rd) attitude. So absent of any customer service and feeling as though we were only annoying them that I did not want to spend any $$ and support the store. But the wife wanted the chair. She too was not pleased nor impressed with the vibe projected by them. Wonder how the vendors feel?? Personally I will not be returning BUT they have some great stuff. The Strand it is not. But for gardening, design, home decor, wildlife, local interest, cooking, architecture (and some photography) and a host of other topics - you need to go to the Screen Door! i lived right down the street from this place and cannot tell you how many treasures i have found here. you do, however, have to sift through a lot to find them. the place is made up of many different booths set up. they change regularly, but at the same time, there is SO much to see here, that if you see something you like and come back next week, it will probably still be there. not all the booths are quality though, so i always found myself to returning to the same ones over and over. prices are good too! read more

This is one of my favorite places to shop/browse in Asheville. I am lucky to live fairly close to it, so I go fairly often. There is SOOO much to see. Lots of cool antique/vintage items, coupled with a lot of great local art. I love everything about this place. Love the outside iron work announcing the entrance, love the set up, love the options! They have a separate section with just books & I.Their sale books are insanely cheap. I never leave this place without getting at least one goodie.
