I love SCRAP! If your artsy type or want to get creative this is your playground! Everything is pretty fair price too! I would say if you have a project in mind they have everything you need! SERIOUSLY! There is also a bathroom. Which I think is important because most places in SF don't let you use it. Lol but yeah I recommend this place for sure! Kids and adults all ages! It's like a big treasure chest! Hidden gem. I needed drafting tools for my engineering class and they had everything I was looking for! & vintage like whaaaaat okay rave over read more

INCREDIBLE PLACE! sooooo many treasures! fantastic prices! go here if you like anything kooky or are a crafty person! They somehow have everything you never knew you needed. Well organized, but be ready to do some hunting. I cannot recommend this place enough! read more

I've been shopping at scrap for at least a decade and until today, have been satisfied with the experience. Well after a decade of shopping there, with never having even thought of returning anything, it finally happened. I really want to return this last purchase. And cutting me some slack after a decade should be fairly easy. I bought what were signed as carpet tile squares. When I see or hear those words, I picture a bunch square pieces of carpet that can be put together to make a larger rug. After spending literally an hour separating & sorting the squares, I gathered my find and headed for the register. I didnt haggle, I just paid the $100+ & went about my business. When I got home I noticed that all the tiles were exactly the same. And with the pattern in them there was absolutely no way to put them together to make a bigger carpet. The situation, I'm willing to admit, is my own fault. And after spending that much time sorting the tiles, you would think I would have noticed the 4 point font on the back of the tiles that said "carpet swatch." Now when I see that word I think of a piece of a larger thing. None-the-less, I missed it. So today I called and asked to return them, but before I could explain that I felt the signage was misleading I was told "no." And in a very short & rude manner with some unnecessary attitude. At the very least, they could have listened to my argument & politely told me "no." The customer service has always been lacking. As it is when you use volunteers. Usually the lack of knowledge or service is easy to overlook. Today, it's not. I will never set foot in there again. It makes me sad to think a decade worth of loyalty is not as important as $100 (and change). Oh well. Goodbye Scrap read more

Ive been coming here since..............i started working in preschools. Maybe like 4years ago. I found A LOT of useful things they could use for arts and crafts. beads, cheap greeting cards, jars, buttons, lots of fun stuff. its kinda far, but if you take the 23MUNI from Sloat, it takes you all the way there!! cool huh. I wouldnt drive there. the cool thing is that theres no cashier, so the person that "rings you up" just guesstimates how much you should pay. Its almost always under $5.00!! minus half a star because I LOVE their 2cats but they have fleas..poor little guys and another half cos its in the ghetto, in an alley.... read more

Best place for any creative. Heavenly. Dedicate some hours for sifting and sorting, thrifters will LOVE.

Disappointed with their donation process. Their online site should be updated and their staff should be on the same page for answers. We recently cleaned out our design library which included 12"x12" memo samples of silk, velvets, sheers, and leather all from Europe - but they do not accept smaller samples. They only accept large bolts of fabrics now - good luck with getting that. Too bad these guys didn't know how expensive the items we were donating. We donated to CCA instead. Won't be coming here again to donate- volunteer staff? is unfriendly. read more

Friendly staff, unless donations of materials for the most part very organized and well priced. There's even a bins of free stuff.

Don't trust the old woman at the counter. Went in and got tiles that were quoted @ $0.50, $1, and $2. Total should've been $4 MAX. And $2 for cloth. Bitch charged me $10, then proceeded to "mistakenly" enter in $13.20 to charge my card, and tried to make up for it by giving me $1.50 back in cash. Calculated the difference right in front of her and her response was "okay if you have to be all nitpicky about it.." Seems like she charges everyone $10 for minimal items. Ask for quotes from the people working there before going to her. Came to this place to find scraps for cheap but she operates like she's in some foreign country's tourist trap. Don't let her overcharge you. read more

This is my favorite store in the city. If you don't mind digging and you have a creative mind, this place will truly delight you. And it's so dang affordable. I used to love going to the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse which had a similar vibe (in Oakland), but year ago, it started to morph into more of a curiosities shoppe with well-curated displays and the thrill of the hunt was lost. I'm so grateful this place exists and that it's still so scrappy, no pun intended!! read more

I am a local public school teacher, and was so excited to hear about Scrap's teacher days once a month. What a generous and kind idea, to give supplies to teachers for children to create art. I arrive and ask how it works, and am taken to a corner area with an array of supplies. I spent a while looking through old reams of paper, old boxes of pens, used staplers, etc., and found some treasures to share with our students. As I was leaving I said, "Thank you so much!" I felt really grateful and excited thinking about projects with kids, and how much they would love the materials. I was planning on putting my things in the car and then coming back to buy additional supplies--things the students need, and to support the organization. As I passed the register, the old lady with a European accent SCREAMED at me, "I said to take THREE bags! You are greedy! Try to restrain yourself! I said THREEEEEE!" On and on. I never heard there was a limit, and of course wasn't trying to take more than a fair amount (even though I am gathering supplies for 600+ students). Would she like me to put something back? No, she just wanted to keep SCREAMING at me, in front of a line of people. I would have left that stuff on the floor, to get out of there, except I used my own bags and didn't want to abandon them. I felt so humiliated and on the verge of tears. I will NEVER go back, and I will tell all of the teachers from San Francisco to stay far, far, far away. She could be handing out free $100 bills and it wouldn't be worth that abuse. I felt additionally bad because I had sent out an email earlier to all of my colleagues asking them to join me--I'll have to update them on my experience, because I wouldn't wish this treatment on anyone. 1. She never said three bags. There was no sign, or anything that said there was a limit (even though there are other signs everywhere). When I asked someone I was told the only limit was on the numbers of some items (like one thing of crayons per teacher, fair enough). I even checked to make sure an item on a certain shelf was available--I didn't want to unintentionally take something they didn't intend to give away. 2. Other workers/volunteers came to the area and saw me gathering things, and spoke with me and were friendly and said nothing about my 5 bags, one of which was my own bag full of empty bags. 3. Someone gave me flyers to tell other teachers to come, because teachers are not coming, and they might lose funding. Good, if that's how they treat people they invite here. That mean old ... is why no teachers will come there. read more

Looooved it! This is a fabulous idea that I wish I'd had myself! For a first time visit, I needed a little more time to acclimate myself than some of the veteran Scrappers. I went with a friend who HATES garage sales, trash pickin', etc. and he hung in there for a good while, petting the cats, chatting up the staff, etc. before retreating to the car. A very eclectic mix of stuff. During my visit, there were: high quality costumes from a few Shakespeare plays, big pieces of glass, tons of bottle caps, yarn in several locations, as well as in a big hanging display from the ceiling. Some new stuff, as well. Brand new cards that have prices like $2.95 on the back for a dime. Sewing patterns galore, organized by designer. Craploads of promotional items that may have been donated by the companies that they represent. Lanyards, CD cases, books. I picked up a kids book about microscopes that was in perfect condition, marked $9.99, a few sewing patterns (most priced over $7) and a bunch of greeting cards (varying prices). My grand total? $3. Probably b/c I didn't argue with the lady. A particularly flamboyant gentleman who came in before me wanted to have a knock-down drag-out with the lady. She asked for $5, he wanted to pay $3. He tried to engage her, but she just pointed to the sign that said something about if you demand a bargain, you won't get it. All in all, it was rather well organized for a place with so much different stuff. All the fabric was measured, the size marked on it, and then rolled up and put in color-coded bins. I like the sassy signs about keeping the place neat. Free crap outside and in the entrance way, as well as some tile and glass that were not free, but very reasonably priced. People were driving by, and stacking items up in a 'donation area' just outside the store. There were a few staffers having a bitch festival in an area marked 'staff only'. This was mildly annoying. Lady at the front desk appears to be the owner/operator, and mentioned to another Scrapper that she has additional materials at another site which she needed to 'process' before she brought them in. (In this case, it was telephone wire that needed to be rolled into a smaller roll that would be easier to handle.) I also overheard that there are TWO other SCRAP locations starting up in different states, though I don't know anything else about that. (Someone started talking loudly so I couldn't hear more. SHUT UP, ho! How can I eavesdrop with you YELLING?) Next time, I'd like to dive into the 'images' area which has SCADS of old photos, those crazy Christmas cards that people send with photos of the family, the dog, etc., and pages from old books. I'll have to make sure my buddy brings his iPhone so he can text a while. Definately worth a second trip! read more

Annoying guy at counter raised the prices by 5x the amount. He does this a lot . Once I picked up some used, empty boxes, which he tried to charge me $20 for. It's ridiculous. You get items for free . Stop acting like it's a boutique. read more

I have never been treated so rude. I asked a simple question "if the prices were firm?" Then I made the mistake of saying I was just curious because the price of the item I wanted seemed a little high because I often look for similar items at the flea market which I love. The lady working at the cash register then yanked the item out of my hand, put it back on the shelf and told me "then go to the flea market and don't come back!" I almost thought it was a joke. But it wasn't. I was so embarrassed. I guess she got her wish... I will indeed NEVER come back to a business that treats their customers this way. I own a business and would never ever dream of talking to Someone, anyone this way. read more

My husband and I are prominent artist in San Francisco, and have donated THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS of art supplies over the years to Scrap. This morning I tried to make a very small donation of corks and other items and was verbally abused and threatened by one Asian clerk. She almost ATTACKED ME!! What is her problem? She has no social skills in dealing with customers. I am very offended and WILL NEVER DONATE ANYTHING TO this PLACE AGAIN. read more

Went there today and had a very bad encounter with the nasty old woman that works there.... As mentioned by many other reviewers here, she is beyond belief in the rudeness and abuse that she heaps upon customers. No, it's not amusing or charming, she should not be allowed in contact with customers until she has learned some basic manners and grows a civil tongue in her nasty old head. (If you look at the Scrap website, I think she is the founder?!?!) Anyway, I guess she parks the broomstick out back..... Love the idea of Scrap, but not worth putting up with abuse to be allowed to rummage through piles of old junk. I will not be back, either to shop or donate. read more

I've been here plenty of times but... What is with the HIGH Prices?!?! I came here on Friday and an older woman with an accent tried to over charge me. Most of the items now have price tags that are pretty insane, considering it's old used junk that they get for FREE! I can go to the dollar store, home depot, Michaels, or Ross and pay less for brand new items. I won't be coming back unless they change their prices... Ridiculous! read more

What happened to Scrap ? I've been coming here for years, and it was a treasure trove of projects for my teaching classes and supplies for my own art work. I got a friend to donate hundreds of dollars worth of a fine leather here , as well, which I hauled in here by the garbage bag full. Today I returned after about a year away and found outrageous pricing on almost everything worth having . But the service was a shock. I brought something to the register and when I asked if the price is flexible nearly got my head bitten off . When I questioned the clerk on her attitude, she got even worse. Then a couple of others behind the counter chimed in with more hostility. So they're in their self-congratulatory circle of nastiness, and I left , never to donate again. read more

It's such an eco-friendly idea, I really want to love it. I find useful stuff there sometimes, and the prices are great. The problem is in the donation process. You're thinking: this is a great place to donate the clasp you saved when your dog chewed through her collar, or the leaking spiral garden hose. Maybe you even successfully donated the same item in the past, and found more, or you asked someone working there whether they would take it and they said yes. Then you load all your stuff into your trunk, go there, and now they say they won't take it. They say "Check the website for what we take and don't take." Um, I did, and this stuff isn't on your list, and I just asked you TWO DAYS AGO, and you told me yes? It doesn't matter; now they don't want it. Take it home. Now you're so annoyed you don't want to stop and buy anything anymore. read more

I have made many donations to SCRAP over the years, and have supported their outreach and promotion efforts. Itsa, strange thing for me to read deprecating reviews of a community based non-profit organization that is seeking to survive and continue to provide a service to the community. They do their best to take in donations, sort them and offer them for sale. Items that may/might/could have value to artisan's, teachers, or anyone on that "creative" pursuit. This is not a name brand department store, nor your professionally staffed boutique. SCRAP'ers pls keep that in mind, otherwise go hunting elsewhere for your bargain art supplies. If you are offended by an eccentric personality, such as the founder of this joint, who does not cater to a SUBurban (such as Sunnyvale or Hercules) sensibility, don't go to SCRAP. If you go, please go with an open mind, open heart and willingness to go with the artistic flow. read more

Put simply: 1 old bucket + 6 "used" skeins of yard = $10 Never paid that much for so little yarn here.. AND they ALL have an attitude problem here nowadays. Why should I come here when I can go to Michael's and buy any yarn I want for pretty much the same price? Also, I DID NOT think very highly of them when they tried to justify an argument with a woman by calling her a meth head and saying she verbally attacked their "nicest employee". Sorry, the look in her eyes when she was saying that made me sick. I don't care what you think someone is on, it's rude to put down your customers, especially in front of other customers. You don't look like the better person in the end, you just look petty. Meth or not, I heard the conversation and I'll just say that I know the woman's words had a ring of truth. She's right that they all have a shady attitude there and they are starting to overcharge whenever they think they can get away with it. Needless to say, I am never coming here or recommending this place to anyone ever again. It would be a waste of time for them and an embarrassment to me if they actually went there. read more

I love this place! I would be 5 stars but I agree with some of the other posts. That older woman rips people off. She sold me 5 skeins of yarn for 20 dollars. The next time I went this guy sold me 11 skeins of yarn. GOOD YARN. For 11 dollars. The entire time she complained about how she doesn't get paid to do this and I'm getting a good deal. AVOID HER IF SHE IS ON REGISTER. read more

In perusing my Sunset Scavenger recycling newsletter, I found out about SCRAP, the most wonderful warehouse-sized scrap bin in that seemingly industrial wasteland under the 280 and 101 out by Bayshore. This place is unbelievable. Aisles and aisles of junk waiting to be transformed into treasure by artistic alchemists. Adorn art-cars, make collages, books, sculptures, robots, button-and-ribbon hand puppets, you name it. Lots of fabric, wood, glass, metal, paper scraps to be had. Definitely the place to be for the glue gun and sewing machine set. They also have junk-into-wow! workshops for those who need a little inspiration (tote bags, mosaics, lamps, crochet mini-baskets...). You can also volunteer here. Basically, people donate all kinds of stuff that they feel guilty throwing in the trash but even guiltier donating to some unsuspecting charity thrift shop to "sell." But SCRAP pretty much takes it all. The person at the front counter eyeballs your purchase pile and guesstimates what sounds like a fair price. If my mom saw the stuff I was buying here, she'd ask why I was paying people to take *their* garbage away, but I like to view it from the other side of the coin. Without junk there would be no comfort in life. However, be forewarned - you must use a lot of imagination but also a lot of restraint to make it out of here with a satisfying bundle of goodies. The acronym doesn't spell out "CRAP" for nothing. read more

People give away ~ 1000 slides that you look thru and see their life travels and high school graduations. Just a remarkable place. I love it and go there about five times a year. read more

WARNING: this is NOT a place for the OCD neat freak that likes walking into clean and organized boutique stores for their crafting goods. This place is the junkyard HEAVEN for those that like to dig, doctor, design, and DE-construct to RE-construct. I find it odd that they have cats roaming around when this place needs a junkyard doggie... Preferably a lazy old bloodhound. OK, so I love rummage sales, friend's garages and flea markets. Come to Scrap w/ the mentality to make something. I don't know how else to describe it... stripped binder rings, fake display books, fabric sample swatch books, magazines, board games, post cards, toys, etc... there's much, MUCH more. The only thing that really grossed me out and threw me off was the crate filled w/ dirty q-tips for sale... not used, but dirty. I'm sure they were there for craft-tool purposes, but I'm sure people can afford q-tips, and I highly doubt those are their best selling item. [Please, throw those away!] o_o Great if you're into Etsy-esque crafts. DIY heaven, and just good fun to poke around and find things to tinker with. read more

I loove the idea of SCRAP and have found some fun things there. It's a great place to help stretch your imagination. I like to go with my son. He picks things out for a "project" while I look for cheap treasures for the house. In spite of how great the facility and concept is, the staff there is not nice or overly helpful. There is one woman in particular that is just a bitch. I absolutely hate to say that about anyone, but she really is just rude and grouchy. We've been there a lot and we now know to stere clear of her while we're there. I was so relieved to see how many people comment ed on her here because I really thought it was me. I'd love to give it more stars because it's exactly the kind of place I love to visit, but the vibe there is sort of hostile and not very warm. read more

SCRAP may be better for schools, churches etc. but as someone who didn't have a cause other than to help save things from landfill, I found the cardboard I tried buying to be wayyy overpriced. My friend bought a faded old lined school notebook for $.50...the same as the cover price. That being said there were some interesting bargains like for little tins and things, which would be useful for crafters. The majority of the stuff isn't priced and that's where you may likely find the bargain you got was no such thing. "If you ask for a deal you aren't going to get one" says the sign in the front. You've been warned. read more

Things were really weird at Scrap when I made some comments about it in 2014 - from what I learned later on the staff was by and large unhappy and feeling sort of threatened due to internal stuff going on there, and that of course doesn't make for a friendly, welcoming work place. Last recent visit it was much more fun & relaxed - like it used to be, definitely a happier staff. Pricing is still unpredictable but most of the stuff is still super-cheap and overall things seem generally much better. One thing that bothered me was the sight of new construction going up at the end the block - it looks like condos or something - so I'm really hoping Scrap can stay where it is and not get evicted due to rampant gentrification like everyone else I know. Give it another chance if you gave up on it. read more

When I was a little kid my younger sister and I had bunkbeds. My upper bunk also doubled as a hidden storage spot for the large amounts of weird crap I accumulated and had to hide from my mom so she wouldn't trash it. My box of things included such gems as postcards from most of my vacations (I'd write them to myself), stickers, and the wrappers from every piece of candy I ate for a good year or so. Needless to say in my adult life I try and contain the part of me that is a ridiculous packrat. Scrap is to me what hanging out in a bar must feel like to a recovering alcoholic. I could wander around for hours just looking at all the little bits of stuff they have--everything from normal crafty things like fabric to more unusual stuff like boxes of people's old pictures. The best part is that you can leave with a grocery bag full of stuff and the total is under $10. read more

Met the Founder- So disappointed. Normally this is an okay place if you are looking for cheap materials for some sort of artsy project. I am a fashion designer and find fabric here sometimes, (although recently their selection has gone from okay to bad) I have been shopping here for 4 years, and normally get good customer service from the sales girls, However today, i was unfortunate enough to have to meet and experience the nasty temper and condensending attitude of the self proclaimed "founder" of this organization. For the 20 minutes I was there rummaging thru the place, I heard her yell at 3 different customers, which was incredible since there must have been no more than 6 in the whole place. Upon asking for a price of a wine box, i was the 4th victim of this tyrant. All I can say is I hope others only go to Scraps when this dark cloud isn't around, otherwise be prepared to be treated like a school age kindergardener being reprimanded by an evil substitute teacher! Watch Out! Update- after reading the other reviews, apparently it works on Thrusdays, which is when i visited, so take note if you visit then read more

Always helpful somehow, more honest than a typical art shop. Great way to budget for art design expenditures!!! Love love love the fact we are up cycling materials rather than buying brand new which is great for the environment! Usually, I feel so supported and encouraged with my work because of a small handful of the workers there. Feels more of a community than going to a typical art shop. I can rush out in 15 and I can stay for an hour. Very comfy, inviting, fun ... and I usually discover something new through finding it or learn from another new techniques or ideas for my art and design projects!! read more

Scrap is a fantastic idea. It is essentially a huge warehouse with artists' unwanted materials for others to scavenge through. You can find tiny message-in-a-bottles, yarn (though not a fantastic selection, of course), card stock, pens, strange containers, and all kinds of material you never could have dreamed up. I wish they had a better selection of material, however. You can't really go to Scrap with a fixed idea of what you want in mind. However, you can often be surprised with bursts of creative thought about what you want to do with the dried fake flowers or how the miniature trees would look gorgeous in a shadowbox on your wall. The woman who checks you out is mean. There generally aren't prices assigned to anything; she scans your merchandise and assigns a spur-of-the-moment, completely arbitrary price to what you're buying. I suspect it's based on how pretty your shoes are or if you remind her of the 2nd grade teacher she hated so much. That said, there are some great finds here. read more
