Great prices, except when you get the grouchy German woman.

Dear viewers and SCRAP, I used to love this place, until my recent visit. I'm a poor art student who lives in a such gentrified city, still dedicating to my art creations and craftsmanship. I go to SCRAP a lot because I want to support a non-profit organization, and also I can find cheap things as a poor art student. The old lady with accent charged me for a different and much higher price for many times. I haven't said anything before, but asked her this time, why I'm getting charged differently than usual. She just flipped out and yelled at me DONT BUY IT, JUST GO GO GO. Suddenly I was so sad and I felt all my support to this place just went to the drain. I was shocked then I stood up for myself because I had no reasons to take all of her shit. Everyone is doing hard for the living. She probably thought she is the founder and dedicated to this place since she started, then do whatever she wants. Let me tell you, SCRAP is still exciting because of our support, if the old lady continues acting like a jerk, SCRAP will be gone much sooner than people expected. It's not something that personal. It's something about principle, if you wanna make price higher, I have no problem at all, just fix your fucking price on that tag, but don't charge people just randomly. AND THE MOST IMPORTANT, BE FUCKING NICE TO YOUR SUPPORTIVE CUSTOMERS, WE ARE NOT GOING THERE FOR YOUR RUDENESS. I realized she won some awards, and I really don't think she deserves that. I will contact some places else regarding her unprofessionalism, I don't want SCRAP to be gone because of her. At least me and other reviewers had experienced this issue will never come back. You are losing us and our support. read more

As a crafter, I love this place and want to go every week to see what treasures I can unearth. The only downside is that it's not very conveniently located, but that probably just helps cut down on the competition for good materials. read more

The pricing is definitely subjective: you walk up with your stuff, not knowing what each thing costs sometimes but they declare the price once you are rung up - a'la Urban Ore though much more reasonable and less surly. I have never gotten a bad deal and have always left satisfied with my purchase - typically consisting of awesome finds such a vintage National Geographics, fabric, old found photos, mat board, wood pieces for painting on, and ultra cheap fabric. If you're an artist stuck on a project looking for inspiration, someone who wants to get into sewing and crafting without spending an arm and a leg, or just anyone into random creative curiosities on the cheap, this is your outlet. read more

Better than a Thrift Store ! What a lineup of interesting stuff. From paper to cloth to plastic, they've got a wide range of supplies at great prices, or sometimes even for free. True, some things are overpriced, but many things are so cheap that you can't pass them up. Each time I go here I find another type of thing that I wouldn't have expected. Do allow plenty of time for your first visit. read more

This place is amazing!!! It's hard to find, but so worth it. You have to be the sort of person who likes looking through piles of random assorted things to find items you can brilliantly re-use. Most stuff is about $5 per grocery bag full. Entire bolts of fabric go for $5-7. There's paper, frames, tiles, baskets, cards, fabric scraps, yarn, glass vials, metal fittings... Be still my heart! read more

Absolute heaven for Pintrest-ers and lovers of all things DIY. Heaps of funky fabric remnants, crates of random wood pieces, enormous selection of ceramic tiles, and so much more! Plan to spend at least an hour digging through the huge selection. Next time I'm bringing a headlamp so that I can better see in all the bins! We visited Scrap and the East Bay Creative Reuse Depot today. First time at both. Scrap has more arts and crafts materials. Creative Reuse has more household goods. Scrap was cleaner and more organized. Creative Reuse is in a more fun neighborhood with some good restaurants. read more

scrap has great stuff great prices but a terrible cashier (she is the old french one) went up to ask for a price the guy in line said I could go first but she yelled you need to wait at the end the guy explained I just needed to know the price she rudely said I know and gave a terrible price (You could buy 1 new at her price) GOOD PLACE BAD PERSON read more

Any place that you're greeted by a friendly cat or dog is going to be a winner in my book. I love SCRAP; however I think when going in there I always plan on fulfilling a few craft ideas, then I get overwhelmed by all of the creative junk that is in there and leave with more than I can handle. On the upside, you'll probably never spend more than $20. I got enough matting to frame 9 med sized paintings at SCRAP for $14. Just remember, take everything in moderation. read more

I like this place. A little gem of little treasures. When I want to look for materials for a rare project for my classroom, this is a place to go. On certain Saturday of a month, they have free school supplies available for teachers. A great place to be to get art materials. read more

As I drive in between the looming warehouse buildings on the way to SCRAP, I feel as if I need to keep my eyes to myself just in case some mobsters are trying to dump a body. After hearing the praise of SCRAP from my sister, I knew that I would eventually find my way out to this little piece of forgotten industrial glory. My sister and I are descendants from a long line of extreme pack-rats. For some reason we both like to think that every nik-nak and what-cha-ma-call-it that we come across could have some potential use in our future. Needless to say, I now try to stay away from SCRAPs. Everything is so cheap though: a dime here a quarter there. Usually, instead of finding what you went there for, you find some random crap that you think is so utterly wonderful just because you bought it for 50 cents. I love it! read more

Well darn. I have one day in the City without my kids, and they are closed on Sundays. I have a ton of leather and items to donate too! Maybe next time I'll get a better day to come over. As a teacher I'll have to come over during my next vacation I suppose. Looking forward! read more

Are you kidding me?! SCRAP is probably the absolute coolest shop I have ever stepped foot in- and I have no clue what the other reviewers are talking about, every single person whom I saw working there was totally friendly and more than helpful. I also found the prices to be better than I could've ever dreamed of- I saw nothing overpriced in the place and walked out of there with a practical boatload of goodies for just $5. $5!!? LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! read more

When I first heard about this place I was a bit skeptical about how legit it may be because of location and what was inside. When I finally entered I was simply blown away, this is a great gem in the art world. There are not many people to ask if you need help, but would gladly help you out if you ask. One of my favorite things was how clean and great enviorment it was. I am a teen who is trying to get his ap portfolio done on a budget and this is the place to go. the lady there was very sweet and had a great passion to help others and inspire artists. I would like to thank her for doing so. read more

I love going there lots of weird things - I wish they were pre priced though. The little old lady checker is nice - but she will try to suck as much money out of you as possible. But other than that - its great. read more

Wow! I went on a shopping trip with a friend who lived in SF for 12 years and I was excited to go because I thought she might take me to new places and I was right! This was our first stop and it was amazing. It's a warehouse in the industrial part of the city, it is packed with everything crafters and artists would need to make their visions a reality. You do have to pick through a lot of stuff, but that is part of the fun, no? There are even some sections where stuff is free! Most of the stuff is not priced, but just go up to the check out and a charming (and a liitle grouchy lady) will give you a more than fair price, there may even be a bit of haggle room... There aren't a lot of gems like this out there, especially in a place like SF. read more

Awesome Awesome Awesome- Everything about this place is awesome. Come by a few times a week for a new selection of arts & crafts supplies, or just random stuff that you didn't know you needed- You're also helping save this stuff from the landfill! The cats that live here are really sweet too! read more

Grandma don't care about your little price tags. BUT BRUH, this stuff would've cost me more at another place.

-1 for being too expensive. -1 not enough variety, really. the east bay depot is about 1/10th the size and has 10 times more stuff. -1 for requiring a car to get there, effectively inaccessible by public transit. +1 for random crap +1 for the resident cats read more

A great resource for the artist, teacher, or parent! I've been here many times and always leave with an armload of "crap" (my wife's description) to use on art projects etc. In my former life as an art teacher in SF I came here to supplement our meager classroom supplies and will I continue to do with my own kid's art/projects. Unfortunately the location is not convenient to mine in the East Bay or else I'd be in trouble. read more

This place is amazing. Filled 4 paper grocery bags full of silk, wood, glass, granite, tiles, flooring materials, all different types of fabrics, etc...all for $22. We spoke to the founder of Scrap for a few minutes and she is an absolute delight. Can't wait to go back for more! read more

As a lover of RAFT in San Jose (http://www.yelp.com/biz/R2XuIwN3mCFObanxbZuFmQ?hrid=UfLdck8d_tbmzI1wy5et-g&fsid=C0z9PRPgRUSq0RqJgDUAqg), I was excited to learn there was a similar store in San Francisco. Scrap has an odd location. It's fun to browse, but many items have no price and the lady you ask is really rude. She quoted my co-teacher and I different prices for the same items. That said, there are treasures to be found here. read more

i've been going to scrap for a few years now and it's my favorite place to go to get junk for my art. at this point, i pretty much know what they have in stock - such as cute little glass bottles, metal tins, dress patterns, vintage sewing thread, photos, printer's proofs, wallpaper samples, bubble envelopes, maps etc...but there's always something new too. however the place is run by getting people's donations so you can't expect to find exactly what you want so be prepared to browse and put cool stuff into your bag that you're not quite sure what you plan to do with. i just went recently and got a bag full of notecards, ephemera, bottles and other stuff for $5 oh and go on a weekday, the lady on saturday is grumpy. she once gave me a hard time for having a $20 bill when she didnt have change. read more

If you have children, work with children or are into crafts & projects SCRAP is your place! Loads of leftovers, pieces and crazy stuff for all of your wild ideas and projects. Just go there and check it out. Bring a little bit of cash and see how much you can get. read more

Great non-profit art thrift store. If you need paper/canvas or fabric/yarn, you need to go this place. They have many other things as well and are very inexpensive. Staff is friendly as well. Definitely worth checking out. Highly recommend read more

Crafts & Art supply stores turn me on. I know it's strange, but all that virgin creative potential beckoning from the shelves just lights my fire ya know? "SCRAP is the kinky, dirty, don't mess with me or I'll cut you!" kind of art center. It gets me hot and a bit scared at the same time. (heart beats excitedly) It's all recycled, very cheap, and half-the-time, they have the perfect item you didn't know you needed. Plus the used but clean 'Craigslist-mattress' feel of the place is charming.... OK maybe not charming, but after you find the perfect hardware part to complete your furniture project you'll be as happy and satisfied as a slutty prom queen after the big game..... You really will. read more

this isn't the best place to go if you have exactly what you need in mind, but if you regularly visit and browse through the place, you can find some AMAZING things to spark ideas and projects. I mostly love that this place exists. I find gems and treasures on the regular. read more

Super cheap treasure hunt! It's like Ross, where you're never quite sure what they might have and they can't tell you whether something is in stock or not, but if you're patient enough to look, you could quite possibly find something amazing for dirt cheap. They also have a bunch of stuff for free (outside area in front of the store). If you're into DIY or looking for some inspiration, come here. So many odds and ends, I felt like Ariel in her underwater cave of whozits and whatzits galore. read more

From quality photos to antique buttons ... this charming hidden treasure store can make you very happy and busily creative even if you only have $5 in your fun budget. read more

A haven for crafty girls and boys. Very theraputic when the world gets to you and the only option besides death is immersing yourself in something artistic. You don't have any ideas? I don't know how we did it but we managed to spend an hour here, walk out with 2 bags full of soon-to-be masterpieces, and only spend $4.50. Score. This place will definitely get your creative mojo going and you're saving the earth at the same time. read more

fun fun. i didn't find anything for my next class assignment, but i did get a 20$ cath kidston recipe organizer for the chef in me (i know she's in there somewhere) for only $3! brand new--the laminated dividers inside even had that new plastic smell--except for this tear in the spine, but whatever; i've already fixed it with my beautiful neon-pink tape from blick. anyways, i can't believe they have so much random stuff--i mean, a whole tub of metal multiple-key-holder things? not the key rings. i don't even know what they're called and they have a whole tub full of them! i bet i have a lot of stuff at home they would appreciate. oh my god, i just realized i have my very own scrap here at home--what do i need to go there for?? read more

it's what is it. The have scrap, a lot of pieces of fabric, all kind of paper, cards, color, basically you may never know what you find there. It's scraps for art and from artist. read more

Great place to donate old art supplies or buy new/used ones! Super friendly staff too.

This place is a dream. You never know what you're going to find & the prices are super reasonable. it's just a creative person's Utopia. Totally recommended if you're in the city and its open check it out read more

I'm that lady that lives in a pile of clippings and bags of buttons and doo dads that Im going to use someday to make something. It used to be my apartment. But now it's a sea of treasure that I surf around on, searching for that one little hook and that square of red felt that I know I put somewhere. It's probably in a different pile, or maybe it's in the unmarked box of special envelopes and wine corks. I used to keep a baggie of my finds behind the refrigerator, but then I realized THAT is totally crazy. And I'm not crazy. I just like to make crafts. When i leave the house, I shop at SCRAP. read more

Got a great deal on picture frames by the bulk, being an art student you are always looking for bargains. This is also for a good cause.

Scrap is the perfect world for inveterate scroungers, artists, inventors and dreamers. You walk in each time never knowing what you might find...from buttons and beads to bags of rubber trimmings to shiny things that defy description. The best part being that a lot of their inventory is stuff that often gets thrown away before most of us ever get a shot at it. It's part garage sale, part scrap bin and part treasure trove. I never leave without at least a few things I can put to use in my workshop. read more

I wish this place were not so out of the way. It's located in the middle of nowhere in the industrial area and it feels like you're entering a forbidden zone. Haha. We had to take a long 9 bus ride to get here and I was disappointed to not find anything I needed. Of course we did not exactly come at a good time - during the holidays a couple of days before xmas. Most of the good stuff was already gone. They did have tons of paper, a large bin full of rubber stamps, wine corks, fabric, ampules/tubes, and the like. I would like to come back during a better time but since it's so out of the way and what you find is a hit or miss, I may call to see if they even have what I want before dropping by. read more
