After writing a scathing review last year, I went back recently to see if anything had changed for the better. They had - prices! How refreshing. Not on everything - most of the stuff is still unpriced but for a few things that they have a lot of there are prices and they are very reasonable. It makes my shopping experience much more rewarding and fair. Ill be going back. PS. They should really clean up the alley where they are located (and where the customers park). Trash is not a welcoming sight. read more

While I love the concept of SCRAP and have shopped and donated here many, many, times over the years, this is such a poorly managed business. The donation process of late has become a time consuming and tedious back and forth that is incredibly inconvenient- with requests for pictures, itemized lists of donations, and multiple emails back and forth to discuss- I mean, REALLY? I understand 100% about being selective about what donations are accepted, however I think the donation process needs to be rethought. While I want to support your business model, you make it difficult to do so. read more

Positive points: Very dependable for certain items which they always seem to have loads of. E.g. fabric, buttons, tile & stone samples. I usually seem to get a load of stuff and get charged very little (I usually give a little more than they ask). Occasional surprises of some really cool stuff. Negative points: Unpredictable pricing, whereas most stuff is priced next to nothing (sometimes actually IS nothing), sometimes something might me more than you expect. Much of the place is a mess, and some of the stuff really is just garbage. Overall I love the place and I've been late back to work after lunch several times because I lost track of time rummaging around SCRAP. read more

omg, after reading the reviews about the Grandma working there at the register.. i totally got overcharged for 3 items (large frame & 2 bud vases). Overall the place has interest stuff. Grandma probably should chill at home. read more

I love SCRAP. The stock varies, so it's hard to show up with a specific project in mind but there is always treasure to be found here. And really cheap, too! Don't forget cash, or a checkbook because the nearest ATM is... not very near. And be prepared to explore a bit, because you do need to find your own way. read more

As a freelance writer who creates DIY tutorials for a living, SCRAP has seriously saved my life. I'm a big crafter outside of work (borderline DIY obsessed, actually) so it's safe to say SCRAP is my go to. You'll find the most random odds and ends here. Literally...scraps. Remnants, leftovers and more. This is a great place to go to if you need supplies for a project but don't want to splurge on entire package of something at Michaels, etc. With that said, it's hard to go in their with a list. I recommend prepping yourself with a general list (green fabric, brown paper, faux flowers, etc.) and then going from there. It's harder to shop there if you need something super specific, so I personally leave those things for the chain craft stores. Otherwise, it's a gem of a place for any DIYer. It's ridiculously cheap. Some things are priced (usually the bigger items - my friend got a cow skull for just $45), but the employee at checkout will usually look at everything you have then give you a total. I recently bought TONS of burlap and lace for just $9 for my friend's wedding decor. It can be a bit overwhelming if you like organization and order. Get ready to dig, sift and get dusty. If you appreciate the value of scraps and creative recycling, you'll really love this place. read more

A hoarders paradise. The name of this place perfectly describes it. This place is full of stuff that you second guess throwing out since you neverrrr know if you might need it - e.g. scraps of paper, zippers, cloth, tiles, pieces of wood, used chalk. You definitely need to dig to find stuff. read more

My wife and I were treated rudely by the woman at the counter today. I'll never shop there again, and we'll never donate again. Sorry. The low prices, the great selection and the excellent organization are not an excuse to treat people discourteously. read more

So I have been to Scrap maybe 8 times over the last 3 years of so. I use to think it was a really amazing resource. I completely respect what they do and their intent. That being said, The last time I went (Oct 2012) I was so completely put off by the nasty people working there, that I'm not sure I'll donate or buy there again. First I brought a bag of donated random materials (mostly things I'd seen there being sold.) Usually I just drop my bag at the front and then continue on my shopping. This woman wanted to go though everything first. I had two plastic pieces that were parts to extend the height of a coffee pot to meet the filter area (on a replacement carafe.) Tough to explain, but I figured it could be part of some crafts project. The woman was like "what are these?" I tried to explain what they were. Her: "well what would you make with them?" me: "I'm not an art teacher, I can't think of anything off the top of my head, but that's not how I am creative." She handed them back to me. She also handed back a handful of other items. I also had accidentally included a burned out light bulbs. I explained that I had several bags in my apt - 1 for goodwill, 1 for Scrap, 1 to recycle batteries, 1 to recycle light bulbs. It was completely accidental it ended up in the wrong bag, but I think she thought I was trying to BS her. When she handed back the first rejected item, I asked where their garbage was and she told me "well we have to pay for garbage pick-up, so take it back home to throw it in your own trash." Really? It's not like my handful of items were going to fill their trash. I mean I get it, but are you people for real?? And with such an attitude as if my intent was to use up their trash services...My landlord pays for my trash. It costs me money to drive to the pits of hell to get to scrap (especially with current gas prices...) So after taking my rejected items back to my car, I then spent an hour or so looking for materials for a projects. In the past I have walked out with bag that ranged from 1/4 to 1/2 full. I've usually paid between $2-5 for said partially filled bag. I ended up with only a handful of items - 4 small padded envelopes, 6 pens, a cup, 4 greeting cards and a handful of buttons. It literally barely even covered the bottom of the bag. I expected it to be like $2 seeing as I'd walked out with drastically more items for $5, or even for just $2. When the woman (different form first mean lady) said $4, I was a bit shocked and I think my mouth dropped open in surprise. Now, of course we are just talking about $2, and I fully believe in their purpose, so I was still OK, but not expecting this. This woman (older and foreign) said something along the lines of "did you make a face?" basically clearly communicating "do you have a problem with that?" I anticipated that had I expressed what I was actually thinking, she would have pointed me toward the exit, and after wasting an hour (not finding what I even came in for) I did not want that time to be for naught so I just said no and gave her $4. But not one, but 2 nasty employees is uncalled for. Both could have communicated in a kinder manner but both had major tudes. read more

Scrap has an amazing inventory and is a wonderful resource- but I had a really disappointing experience here today. I asked the woman at the front counter how much the entire bin of metal cased rhinestones would be (priced at 5 for $1) after she had just told another customer it was great when people bought in large quantities. She offered me $25, so my partner and I dumped the 60 or so rhinestones we'd carefully handpicked out back into the bin and brought it to the checkout. When we got to the front, the same woman asked us what we were going to do with them. When we said decorating our clothes, making accessories, etc. She said "Yeah... I've changed my mind. I don't want to sell you the whole thing." She didn't apologize or give a reason, and was frankly pretty rude. We had to take the bin back and spent another 20 mins going back through to pick out the specific ones we wanted- again. I know Scrap is largely staffed by volunteers, but the folks here really need some training on pricing and customer service. read more

I usually have the greatest experience and find the coolest things at SCRAP and that's why I drive 2 hours to come here. Today was not the greatest, the older lady who was working in the front was overpricing everything even broken objects. I'm pretty sure she was cursing at me in whatever language she speaks when I changed my mind on the items she was pricing 5-10$ (things I usually pay a dollar or two for) because she thought it was a good price?. She even ordered my boyfriend to get some bags for her in the rudest way and tone. She lost a lot of profit for the store today. She really killed the vibe , they shouldn't have her upfront. I'm sure she's a nice lady but maaaan. We will be back but if she is working we will walk right back out. Thumbs doooown read more

I've been a customer and donor for years and years. I don't think I will return again. I have been hanging onto a small bag of donations specifically set aside for scrap for months. I work right around corner from the place and still never make it in there before they close. Today I got off work a bit early so I looked up their hours and walked over a few minutes before 6. I handed over the bag and they looked at me funny. I said it was a donation. Paraphrasing.. you missed the cutoff time for donations by like an hour. No 2 hours. We can take it this time but... Blah blah. This was a small bag of decent materials and I was DONATING IT. This guy gives me quite a bit of attitude like I was asking him to do something unreasonable. I'm sorry you had a bad day but you should really treat your customers and donors with some degree of respect. Your disrespectful tone alone makes me not want to support this establishment. 2 stars for the principal of promoting reuse materials. -3 for a bad attitude from 1 rotten egg. read more

Many great buys here for the last few years but today was my last visit. Check all the unauthorized aka removed yelp reviews at the end, and you'll see a trend. If you dare visit, I strongly recommend you call FIRST to make sure the very mean and slightly racist European accented older lady who represents herself as the founder, is NOT working. She will totally charge you double what all the listed prices are. yup. so if a sign says $2, she will charge you $4...because she feels like it. If you raise this issue, she will berate and belittle you. No ART for you! I actually spent like half an hour writing a letter to the Director, but then after seeing the multitude of removed reviews on yelp, its clear this has been going on for a long time and not resolved. I understand they've had an issue retaining managers so I hope they do engage in some soul-searching, because the concept of the space is important, hence the two stars. I know first hand it is hard to run a non-profit. I've been there when my own salary was cut in half, but treating people with a tiny bit of dignity, there is no excuse. read more

Like SCRAP but find Anne Marie, the self announced "founder" to be incredibly rude. Today when we pointed out a sign listing various prices including the price for an item we wanted to buy, Anne Marie left the register and took down the sign and demanded a higher price. We've also seen her call customers names and boss them around. Anne Marie justifies her behavior by loudly announcing "I am French" or "I am the Founder!" To avoid being the recipient of such treatment, either avoid SCRAP altogether or try to schedule your SCRAP visit for a day when Anne Marie isn't there. read more

I live in the East Bay so usually go to the Depot for Creative Reuse which I am a huge fan of. Today I was in SF and found SCRAP on Yelp and decided to give it a try. I entered with the mindset that this was my new favorite place. I am a new teacher and need to provide materials for my classroom. So I spent 2+ hours searching and found some really great stuff. I'm a reasonable person and don't usually haggle but I asked the woman to reduce the price on an incomplete set of alphabet books. 4 of the letters were missing. Her response was so incredibly rude that I left all 3 of my bags on the counter and left. I will never attempt to shop there again. And I will never agree that kids won't know the difference if letters of the alphabet are missing. Stay away. I'm sorry Depot for betraying you. read more

DON'T GO ON THURSDAYS! I was yelled at today for asking if the woman helping me could explain my total. I've been many times before but I've never been treated this way. At the time I asked about the prices no one was in line behind me, yet the woman who helped me told me "I should be ashamed of myself for giving her a hard time"... can you believe that! She went on and on... All because I asked very politely if she could take a moment to help me understand my total. The woman who came into line behind me said her friends don't come on Thursdays for the same reason. My friend was charged 3x as much as she should have by the same woman! The rest of the time this place is great and the people there are normally wonderful. read more

Good for crafters, teachers on a budget. Bad for donating to.. I brought in 2 medium bags of fabric and a chunk of clay today. He took a picture of my license plate and said he was calling the cops? haha, whoa! read more

At first sight , Scrap appears to be this place that has nothing but junk! when seen through the eyes of an uncreative person which is how I felt my very first visit there. I decided to return the following day and was amazed of the endless possibilities to create unique one of kind items. I frequent this place 3 to 4 times a week! You have to because it's constantly receiving items. I walked in one day and they just put out a new roll of Neoprene fabric that I quickly snatched. The real treasures in this place is the staff! They are incredibly helpful and recognize you when you come in. Jake is a very knowledgeable manager who is always on the move! But always available to help! read more

I thought this place was going to be a great place to purchase crafting materials-- but I will not purchase from here. First time shopping and this red haired lady comes up to my friend and me: "Um, one, you can't have dogs in here because we have cats.. Two, this is an employee only area so, stop trying to buy our supplies." There were no signs marking this employee only area and another employee just talked to my 8lb dog that would get beat up by their cats before she would harm them. I was clearly just unaware of the rules and not being malicious and she was incredibly rude. I'd rather pay full price for my crafting supplies than be talked to like a child. read more

I've been going to SCRAP for years now! What a wonderful place to behold! So much new stuff EVERYDAY! It's I N C R E D I B L E!!! I'd also like to extend a BIG THANK YOU to all of the WONDERFUL volunteers and especially the founder Ms. ANNE-MARIE who ALWAYS has a kind word for me and other shoppers! She is to be commended for pursuing, implementing and continuing the SCRAP legacy. A lot of you have written some REALLY bad crap about her here. You all ought to be ashamed! When YOU go out in life and do the same sort of thing she has done since THE MIDDLE SEVENTIES then you can complain! I have been in line when she practically GIVES things away and STILL SOME OF YOU UNGRATEFUL SO AND SO'S COMPLAIN! Good lord! Give the woman a break why dontcha! Bitch and complain - that's what SOOOOOOOOO many of you entitled people do there! You think just because everything is donated, that it should be free?!! W H A T?!! They have to make money to pay the staff and maybe slip a few bucks to the volunteers now and again, I don't know, but jesus people, L I G H T E N U P! MS. Workers there are incredibly rude. Tried to donate several large bags of fabric, and they refused to take it. Their website doesn't say what days are donation days when they list what days their open. But the worker argued that it did. I find it pretty ridiculous I'm willing to give them lots of fabric for free that they turn around and sell and they couldn't even put it aside to use it. Giving me an bogus excuse 'no because we have to clean up for it'. Then they all come out and treat us like criminals As we pack our bags in the car. I tired to be nice and ask if they knew where I can take the fabric, the worker said "goodwill" uh? Yeah good will doesn't take fabric. Idiot. Donated all my fabric to a useful place instead. You guys missed out on a lot of expensive fabric. Nice. read more

This place is crazy, it has literally anything you can imagine when it comes to scraps, and it's amazingly well organized considering they have so much stuff! Can't wait to cone back often for my crafting needs. read more

This is a dream land for junk lovers like me. It's the kind of stuff you find on the street or wish you had. The nice thing is that I don't have to scour the streets for it, it's all in a wearhouse. The bonus is that there is even a free section where I picked up most of my goodies. And when I got there I also saw that they have workshops. The mosaic one was happening and looked very fun. Oh yeah. I only had $4 and change and all my stuff was quoted as $6, but she let me have it anyway. Remember that they only take cash and good checks. But they prefer cash. I came out with this killer 3 color print of some sort of dying people scene, a copy of some graphic novel woman on large transparency paper. I also grabbed a handful of corks to make stamps out of, a couple of glass votive holders to craft up, a handful of color slides (they had a huge bin of these and you know they will be useful in some project of yours), and a watercolor paint set. I also nabbed free cans, cards, fabric scraps, etc. I just wanted you to get a feel for all the wonderful stuff you can find at SCRAP. read more

Great if you're a teacher because you can get free stuff, but if you're not I found the "ad hoc" prices they give you to be kinda high. If you need little craftsy things this is the place to go but don't expect a deal. I've found community thrift to be a better place for things. read more

This place is ok to shop at but the prices are often not marked and what you end up paying is drastically different based on who is ringing you up. Unfortunately, this place seems to be trying to focus on getting thrift store type items and high end stuff. To an extent, I understand because they want stuff that is really easy to sell but the relatively massive tax dollars and grant money they get is to keep things out of the landfill. They only want to take stuff that world never be thrown away in the first place. read more

I really like SCRAP and what they originally stood and my experiences for the last few years have been fairly positive. Recently they have decided to raise their rates - recently I have 5 items and the total was $52 - I put 4 of the items back and bought the one that had a $1 price tag on it. Honestly was expecting approx $20 charge - but a 2.5x more than previous - the items new would have been less. The staff for the most part that have been with SCRAP for awhile are really super nice - some of the newer members are less than helpful and for some reason have a large chip on their - her I am mean their shoulder. I would challenge the Board of SCRAP to review how the increase of prices have changed their sales and who has benefited from the increase. Are there new programs - no, are there new additional employees - no, did you loose other funding or grants as customers are being told - but unable to tell the client what grant or funding has been lowered or eliminated - have costs of operations gone up - no, have wages across the board been increased - no, does each employee and no they are NOT CONTRACTORS (please really they are not contractors when you tell them when to show up and also what to do for a job and use a time clock to check in and when done and they make minimum wage - no. Paid less than minimum wage - heck with free trade - lets make sure right here in SF that everyone is treated and paid accordingly. Its more than disappointing to know an organization that is a non-profit and is associated with San Fran Unified School District has their own rules for how they pay the staff. At the end of the day, new pricing that is higher than the past by 2x will cause a slow migration away from a place that was once fun. PS - the old lady, the founder and yes we have had words - but she tells it like it is - if she is working deal with it - she has the BIGGEST HEART and cares about SCRAP more than anyone. read more

Scrap is one of my favorite places to shop. Being on a fixed income, shopping at Scrap helps my budget. I only go there when that elder lady is not there. I donated fabric to SCRAP and decided to take a look around. It reminded me of a art donation station we had in the East Bay when I was growing up. Love the place! I accidentally found the place while I was doing getting my lasercut stuff nearby and little did I know i'd fell in love with it. Scrap is located in a warehouse and is easily located with the ease of google map. There are hundreds, if not thousands genre of goods sold and most importantly, they are CHEAP. Goods range frm stationaries, fabrics, wood, glass, pots and plants to utilities, costumes, clothes, books etc. you name it, they have it. For my case, i am working on an architectural model so i am in need of large amount of mat boards. I got 12 in the end and a piece of acrylic (plastic) for a total of $6. I'm pretty sure the acrylic alone cost more than tht in market price. I am definitely coming back and for those architectural students and artists out there, check this place out. read more

An arts & crafts thrift store is my idea of some kind of heaven. This has to be my favorite store in the whole world. Because arts education is so chronically underfunded in this country and we, as a society, waste so much crud on a daily basis, there is a desperate need for this sort of non-profit in every town in America. I could spend an entire afternoon in their warehouse, rummaging through the aisles. Whenever I visit another city, I try to find their version of SCRAP. There are similar stores in Oakland (East Bay Depot for Creative Re-Use), Sacramento (ReCREATE) and Chicago (The Waste Shed). I am an evangelist for this movement--good for the environment, good for promoting arts in public schools and good for your pocketbook & artsy-craftsy soul. read more
